While famous sites like Scafell Pike draw large crowds, the region is also home to quieter spots perfect for families, history lovers, and adventurers. Here are three lesser-known attractions that promise a special experience. Aira Force Hidden away in Ullswater, Aira Force is a classic ancient pleasure ground with a 70-foot waterfall at its heart. A series of well-maintained paths, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, wind through woodland filled with unusual trees planted in the 19th century. The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Castlerigg Stone Circle Set against a backdrop of sweeping mountain views, Castlerigg is one of the UK’s most impressive Neolithic monuments (新石器时代遗迹), dating back around 5,000 years. Unlike many other stone circles, it is free to enter and remains largely untouched. There is no on-site lighting, so visiting during daylight hours is necessary. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography, and the site hardly feels overcrowded even in high season. Wordsworth Museum Situated in the charming village of Grasmere, this museum celebrates the life and works of poet William Wordsworth. The collection includes original works, personal letters, and items from the poet’s time at nearby Dove Cottage. B As a teenager, I fell in love with foreign languages — first French, then Italian, then Hindi, and Chinese. The learning has often left me highly frustrated, but has also given me great joy at the fact of having understood some of the beauty of those wonderful, magical tongues. Why did I learn all those languages? Out of love for different sound systems, different writing systems, different grammars, different idioms, different ways of seeing the world. I also loved repeatedly listening to songs from other lands and feeling the culture and history silently lying in the words and tunes. My earliest-learnt language was French, and then Italian. My French is very good. Although my Italian is not as good, it gives me a huge burst of pride whenever I’m taken for a native speaker. Chinese is another kettle of fish. I’ve struggled with it for many years, yet I’m almost always lost in a group of native speakers. It’s discouraging, but I still want to try to climb the Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) of the Chinese language on my own. I don’t want a helicopter (直升机) ride to the summit. Learning another language is one of the deepest and most human things one can possibly do. Language is at the core of who we are. Language makes us who we are. Today, AI can impressively help anyone to write and read in almost any language. But this is a surface-level exchange of ideas, which comes at a steep price: the loss of honest engagement (参与) with the magic organ that makes us human. The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so important to do so in the AI era. Chinese is difficult for me, but I will never allow AI to borrow my voice to express my thoughts aloud in a perfect Chinese accent. 4. What do we know about the author’s learning of foreign languages? A. It is always a pleasant experience. B. It is easiest for her to learn Hindi. C. She started learning them at the age of 8. D. She really loves them and their cultures. 5. Why does the author compare Chinese to “Everest”? A. To show it is full of natural beauty. B. To suggest it is extremely challenging. C. To show it is the most important language. D. To prove it is popular among language learners. 6. Why is learning a new language still important in the AI era? A. Because AI cannot translate languages clearly enough. B. Because it allows us to avoid the challenges of modern life. C. Because the process itself keeps us truly engaged as humans. D. Because it helps us get better grades in school examinations. 7. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To recommend AI tools for language study. B. To share personal views on learning languages. C. To compare the difficulties of French, Italian and Chinese. D. To prove that Chinese is the hardest language in the world. C Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination (歧视) is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes. For a long time, professionals held the view that only obese (肥胖的) women would face an income cut, while men were hardly affected. To check whether this traditional idea is true, researchers from The Economist have carefully examined the personal information of over 23,000 full-time workers aged 25 to 54. The results show that being obese hurts both women’s and men’s income. Generally, men’s BMI has nothing to do with their income, but things change with university degrees. For both sexes, better-educated workers are, in particular, treated unfairly for their weight. The higher their education, the bigger the pay cut. Obese men with an undergraduate degree earn 5% less, while those with a graduate degree earn 14% less. Obese women are worse off, with 12% and 19% less pay. Different jobs also bring different results. In high-skill industries like healthcare and management, overweight workers are at a clear disadvantage. However, in some physical work industries such as construction and farming, obesity has not caused lower incomes. As a result, the total yearly loss from this discrimination in America may reach $70 billion, more than twice the earlier guess. To deal with this unfair phenomenon, several states and local governments in the United States have begun to consider related laws, and a new official rule was put into effect in New York City on November 22nd. Meanwhile, many experts have pointed out that discrimination against obese women has long existed in the United States and addressing this unfair phenomenon requires united efforts. Laws and rules could only be part of the solution. 8. What can we learn about weight discrimination in work? A. It has been fully ignored. B. It affects both sexes equally. C. It causes differences in pay. D. It has a greater impact on men. 9. According to the study, which group of obese workers is the least paid? A. Men with a graduate degree. B. Men with an undergraduate degree. C. Women with a graduate degree. D. Women with an undergraduate degree. 10. What do the experts suggest to solve the problem? A. Better working conditions. B. Strict laws against unfairness. C. Collective efforts from all sides. D. Positive attitude toward weight. 11. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Pay gap: an issue between sexes. B. Pay gap: an unfair social phenomenon. C. Weight discrimination: a threat to health. D. Weight discrimination: a hidden cause of pay gap. D If the term “renewable energy” brings to mind a sea of solar panels (太阳能电池板), you’re not alone. It’s becoming more and more common to collect energy from the sun and wind. But solar and wind power have one big problem: the sun only shines during the day; wind comes and goes; there are very few places where wind is constant enough to produce electricity. Ocean waves, however, crash onto shore morning, noon and night, making them ideal for producing energy around the clock. Now scientists are figuring out just how much energy waves could offer. The first step to creating wave power is finding out the best place to position those energy converters (转换器). To work this out, scientists Joao Morim Nascimento and Nick Cartwright from Griffith University used a computer model named SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore). SWAN predicts the intensity and distribution of ocean-wave energy. To achieve this, it takes into account factors such as wind conditions, seafloor features and interactions between different waves. The model helped the team find “hotspots”, places with what Cartwright describes as an “abundance (大量) of wave energy.” “There’s more than enough natural energy there in the ocean,” he says. “The challenge is to collect and convert enough of it into usable electricity.” Waves constantly strike the converters. The hardware may also experience some extreme weather. Huge storm waves can damage the converters, Cartwright says. He also adds that seawater gradually breaks down metal components (部件). There’s no question that finding new sources of renewable energy is good for the environment. Less pollution and fewer greenhouse gases are good for people, plants and animals. “From the vast resources of the ocean, wave energy has the potential to make a huge contribution towards our clean energy needs of the future,” Nascimento says. But he adds, “It needs to be done in a sustainable way, in harmony with the environment.” 12. What is the main advantage of ocean wave energy? A. It takes up no land space. B. It requires very few places. C. It can be produced nonstop. D. It costs less than solar power. 13. What do we know about SWAN? A. It analyzes more than ocean waves. B. It increases wave energy. C. It uses an AI model for predictions. D. It works with ocean converters. 14. What is the biggest difficulty in developing wave energy? A. Finding the best spots for converters. B. Keeping converters from being damaged. C. Measuring the amount of wave energy. D. Reducing the cost of making converters. 15. What is Nascimento’s attitude toward exploring new energies? A. Worried about its future. B. Fully excited about it. C. Mostly uninterested in it. D. Careful but positive about it. How to Build Lasting Friendships in High School Entering high school is an exciting adventure, but it can also be a bit lonely at first. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第二段“Why did I learn all those languages? Out of love for different sound systems, different writing systems, different grammars, different idioms, different ways of seeing the world. I also loved repeatedly listening to songs from other lands and feeling the culture and history silently lying in the words and tunes. (我为什么要学习所有这些语言?出于对不同音系、不同书写系统、不同语法、不同习语、不同看待世界方式的热爱。我也喜欢反复聆听来自其他国度的歌曲,感受那些潜藏在歌词和旋律中的文化与历史)”可知,作者非常热爱外语及其文化。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Chinese is another kettle of fish. I’ve struggled with it for many years, yet I’m almost always lost in a group of native speakers. It’s discouraging, but I still want to try to climb the Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) of the Chinese language on my own. (中文则完全是另一回事。我已经为此挣扎了许多年,但在母语者群体中,我几乎总是迷失方向。这很令人沮丧,但我仍然想尝试独自攀登中文这座“珠穆朗玛峰”)”可知,汉语令作者沮丧,作者将汉语比作“珠穆朗玛峰”是为了表明它极具挑战性。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“Today, AI can impressively help anyone to write and read in almost any language. But this is a surface-level exchange of ideas, which comes at a steep price: the loss of honest engagement (参与) with the magic organ that makes us human. The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so important to do so in the AI era. 通读全文,结合第一段“The learning has often left me highly frustrated, but has also given me great joy at the fact of having understood some of the beauty of those wonderful, magical tongues. (学习过程常常让我非常沮丧,但同时也给我带来了巨大的快乐,因为我理解了一些那些美妙神奇语言的魅力)”以及第二段“Why did I learn all those languages? Out of love for different sound systems... (我为什么要学习所有这些语言?出于对不同音系的热爱……)”和第五段“The challenges of learning a new language are exactly why it is still so important to do so in the AI era. (学习一门新语言的挑战正是为什么在AI时代它仍然如此重要的原因)”可知,文章以作者个人学习多种外语的经历和感悟为主线,旨在分享个人对学习语言的看法。 C Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination (歧视) is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes. C 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes. (尽管超重人群在各种社交场合经常受到不公平对待,但许多人没有注意到的是,这种歧视在工作中的严重程度远超人们的想象,导致了性别之间的薪酬差距)”可知,职场中的体重歧视会导致薪酬差异。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Obese women are worse off, with 12% and 19% less pay. (肥胖女性的处境更糟,薪酬分别低12%和19%)”可知,拥有研究生学位的肥胖女性薪酬减少19%,是所有群体中减薪幅度最大的,因此是收入最低的群体。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Meanwhile, many experts have pointed out that discrimination against obese women has long existed in the United States and addressing this unfair phenomenon requires united efforts. (与此同时,许多专家指出,对肥胖女性的歧视在美国由来已久,解决这一不公平现象需要各方共同努力)”可知,专家们建议通过各方共同努力来解决这个问题。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Although overweight people are often treated unfairly in various social situations, what many people fail to notice is that such discrimination is far more serious than people have thought in work, leading to pay gaps between sexes. (尽管超重人群在各种社交场合经常受到不公平对待,但许多人没有注意到的是,这种歧视在工作中的严重程度远超人们的想象,导致了性别之间的薪酬差距)”以及全文围绕体重歧视如何导致薪酬差距展开论述可知,文章的主旨是体重歧视是薪酬差距的一个隐性原因。 D If the term “renewable energy” brings to mind a sea of solar panels (太阳能电池板), you’re not alone. C 13. A 14. B 15.
