Of all the people in the world, parents are the only ones who are always there for us, no matter what happens. But why, is it that some teenagers act like their parents are their biggest enemies? 1 Once the journey/independence begins, the parents are going to be less acceptable than they used to be. 2 As kids, we learn almost everything about the world from them. But once we reach our teenage years, we begin to feel like we don't need their help any more. And at the same time, everything from the clothes they wear to the way they speak makes us feel embarrassed. However, it is our parents who brought us into the world. Naturally, they have been around a lot longer and they know many more things. 3 They just want to protect us from making the mistakes they have made. Remember that any parents' wish for their children to be safe and do well. 4 Moreover, while it might seem like all our parents do is to annoy and criticize us we should listen to their words. 5 A.After all, our parents are our greatest teachers in life. B.So if our parents are always telling us what to do, there's a good reason for this. C.But any advice they give us is meant to protect and guide us. D.With this in mind, we should put ourselves in our parents' shoes. E.This is because teenagers are just trying to find their own identity. F.They reject their parents in an attempt to create their own unique world. G.Indeed, we tend to think that we know better than our parents as we grow older. 五、完形填空 How to Know If You Talk Too Much Talking can cloud your perception like smoke in your eyes. Once you’re on a roll, it’s very easy to not notice that you’ve 6 your welcome. You may not even realize that the other person is 7 trying to get a word in, or subtly signaling that they need to be elsewhere. Why does this happen? First, the very simple reason is that all human beings have a (n) 8 to be listened to. But second, the process of talking about ourselves releases dopamine, the pleasure hormone. One of the reasons gabby (喋喋不休的) people keep gabbing is because they become 9 that pleasure. Not long after my book, Just Listen, came out, I too succumbed (屈服) to ignoring signs that I had started to 10 my friend and fellow coach, Marty Nemko, host of a radio show. He and I have been coaching each other for some time. He 11 when he told me, “Mark, for an expert on listening, you need to talk less and listen more.” After I recovered from the 12 , he pointed out a useful strategy that I have been using. It’s helping me and it might help you. Nemko calls it the Traffic Light Rule. In the first 20 seconds of talking, your light is green: your listener is liking you, as long as your statement is (38) 13 to the conversation and hopefully in service of the other person. But unless you are an extremely-gifted raconteur (讲故事高手) , people who talk for more than roughly half a minute are often perceived as too chatty. So the light turns yellow for the next 20 seconds — now the 14 is increasing that the other person is beginning to lose interest or think you’re long-winded (啰嗦的)。 At the 40-second mark, your light is red. Yes, there’s an occasional time you want to run that red light and keep talking, but the vast majority of the time, you’d better stop or you’re in 15 . Whatever the cause, filibustering (长篇大论) is usually a conversational turn-off (扫兴的事), and may result in both of you deteriorating (恶化, 退化) into alternating monologues (独角戏)。 And that certainly will do little to move the conversation or your 16 forward. One reason some people are long-winded is because they’re trying to impress their conversational counterpart with how smart they are, often because they don’t actually feel that way underneath. If this is the case for you, realize that 17 talking will only cause the other person to be less impressed. Of course, some people who talk too much simply “may not have a sense of the 18 of time,” Nemko says. If this is the case, the cure is not to look inside yourself for psychological insight. It’s just to develop a better 19 sense of how long 20 and 40 seconds are. Finally, remember that even 20 seconds of talking can be a turn-off if you don’t include the other person in the conversation. To avoid that, ask questions, try to 20 what they say, and look for ways to include them in the conversation so it is a genuine dialogue instead of a diatribe (长篇大论) . Well, I think my 40 seconds are up, so I’ll stop here.
