A friend who studies architecture at a good college told me that her math grades are holding her back. She asked how I managed to pass so many tough exams and graduate even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you 2 easy steps. Step one: know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically fill the remaining spaces. Concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic, and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each. Step two: practice, practice, and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply it in an exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite. Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge better.

Makaran hated piano lessons she took as a child. It amused her that she found second-career success as a DJ a decade ago, playing tunes for MTV and other clients. “I was playing music for people, watching them forget their stress and worries and just be present on the dance floor,” says Makaran. “I never thought of music for my own healing until I really needed it.”
Ten years ago, Makaran developed cancer. Following drug therapy (疗法) and surgery, her best hope of remaining cancer-free depended largely on Heresquin, an effective anticancer medicine. But after a few rounds, Makaran proved allergic (过敏物) — and there was no alternative. Makaran asked her doctor, “What should I do?” He responded simply, “Be happy.” Initially she couldn’t believe it, but then she understood, “If I can manage my stress and my emotions, I would have the best chance of surviving, even though I was taken off treatment.” Then she began to explore how music could help her heal.
“Music therapy can help manage cancer-related symptoms and anxieties as effectively as traditional therapies,” according to a study. The study involved seven weeks of therapy combining talk, music and songwriting. During sessions, trained therapists might help put a patient’s words or feelings to a song, co-write a tune, or simply listen. Makaran sometimes wrote songs to express her emotions, or just sang along.
The population of cancer survivors has increased in recent decades to 18.6 million people in America alone. Dr. Kevin Lion says there is a greater need for varied therapies to improve their quality of life. “We want a wide range of tools to better personalize treatments,” he says. The next phase of research is to look at the characteristics of patients likely to benefit from music therapy.
24.How did Makaran initially feel about music?
A.Enthusiastic. B.Favorable. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.
25.What did Makaran realize after her doctor’s advice?
A.Doctors hold all the keys. B.Mental wellness helps recovery.
C.Music alone holds magic. D.Medical treatment is needless.
26.What can we infer about music therapy from paragraph 3?
A.It features multiple methods.
B.It requires specific musical skills.
C.It is primarily based on writing songs.
D.It is more effective than traditional ones.
27.Why do the researchers study the characteristics of patients?
A.To train better therapists. B.To shape their taste in music.
C.To improve the quality of tools. D.To tailor therapy to specific needs.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.D

A 23-year-old British woman has invented a product that she hopes will one day take the place of single-use plastic. The new product is made by combining fishing waste and algae (藻类). Lucy Hughes created the material, called MarinaTex, for her final year project at the University of Sussex. She continued her research after she left the university.
On November 13, the James Dyson Foundation announced that Hughes was the international winner of the 2019 James Dyson Award for design. MarinaTex is edible, meaning it can be eaten without danger. Hughes says it also is strong and stable. But unlike plastic, MarinaTex breaks down in four to six weeks under normal conditions and does not pollute the soil.
The inventor said she is concerned about the growing amounts of plastics in ocean waters. She noted one report that there would be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by the year 2050. The United Nations estimates that 100 million tons of plastic waste has already been left in the oceans. Hughes also was investigating ways to reduce the amount of waste from the fishing industry. The industry produces an estimated 50 million tons of waste worldwide each year, UN officials say. Hughes told Reuters that she was “trying to work out how I could use the waste stream and add value to that waste.” Examining fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea for a material that was useful and did not harm the environment.
To create a strong material, Hughes added the molecule chatoyant (猫眼石), which comes from sea creatures like crabs, and agar, a material from red algae. After months of testing, Hughes produced a strong, flexible sheet that forms at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Inventor James Dyson said that MarinaTex is “stronger, safer and much more sustainable” than the plastic polyethylene (聚乙烯). It is also easier to break down than other possible replacement products for polyethylene, the material that single-use plastic bags are made of.
Hughes will receive about $41,000 in prize money as the first place winner of the James Dyson Award. She told Reuters that she plans to use the money to better develop the product and ways to mass produce it.
28.When did Lucy Hughes create MarinaTex?
A.After graduation. B.At university.
C.Before going to university. D.After winning the James Dyson Award.
29.What’s true about MarinaTex?
A.It is environmentally friendly. B.It is delicious and cheap.
C.It is a type of plastics. D.It exists for a long time in nature.
30.What helped to give her the idea for MarinaTex?
A.Observing the process of fishing.
B.Studying different parts of a fish.
C.Examining left-over fish parts after cooking.
D.Checking waste from the fishing industry

Bioengineers have introduced a new method of food production that could dramatically reshape agriculture, potentially making it more eco-friendly, and adaptable to environments like space.
Called “electro-agriculture ”, this system would replace traditional photosynthesis (光合作用) — a process that only changes around 1% of light energy into usable chemical energy in plants — with a solar-powered reaction that effectively changes carbon dioxide (CO₂) into an organic molecule (有机分子) that plants could use as food. The current version of electro-agriculture achieves about 4% efficiency — four times higher than photosynthesis.
“Since electro-agriculture is not dependent on climate conditions like traditional farming, it could serve as a precious method for producing additional food when necessary. With global climate change affecting agriculture, new food production technologies are becoming increasingly vital to balancing food markets and supporting a growing population”, senior author Feng Jiao said.
In electro-agriculture, solar plates would be used to power a chemical reaction between CO₂ and water, producing acetate (醋酸盐). Plants would be reengineered to use this acetate as a primary energy source instead of relying on photosynthesis.
Robert Jinkerson, a biological engineer, sees this technology as a major move forward. “If we don’t need to grow plants with sunlight anymore, then we can decouple agriculture from the environment and grow food in indoor, controlled environments,” he said. The change could move agriculture into upright, multi-story indoor farms where solar power is collected outside the building to drive plant growth inside.
So far, researchers have engineered plants that can use acetate in combination with photosynthesis, but the ultimate goal is to create plants that rely entirely on acetate for energy. While plant research is still in its early stages, other species like mushrooms have already naturally used acetate as an energy source. This means the technology could be applied to these food-producing beings much sooner in the market.
32.What is the key to electro-agriculture?
A.Promoting energy change efficiency.
B.Increasing plants’ adaptation to light.
C.Offering plants sufficient nutrition.
D.Reproducing photosynthesis indoors.
33.What did Feng Jiao take electro-agriculture as?
A.A short-term fix for climate change.
B.A valuable solution for food supply.
C.A new exploration of traditional farming.
D.A possible replacement for organic farming.
34.What does the underlined word “decouple” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Protect. B.Separate.
C.Recover. D.Choose.
35.What would be the best title of the text?
A.Climate change affects agriculture.
B.Electro-agriculture will replace traditional agriculture.
C.Plants need no photosynthesis.
D.Electro-agriculture makes indoor farms possible.
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.B 35.D

故选A项。
根据第三段“Since electro-agriculture is not dependent on climate conditions like traditional farming, it could serve as a precious method for producing additional food when necessary. With global climate change affecting agriculture, new food production technologies are becoming increasingly vital to balancing food markets and supporting a growing population(由于电农业不像传统农业那样依赖于气候条件,它可以作为一种宝贵的方法,在必要时生产额外的食物。
Whether you are a couch potato or fitness enthusiast, the start of a new year is a great time to set an exercise goal. 36 A study of more than 1000 people found that only about half of them sustained resolutions for a year. I, for one, have tried and failed for years to tick running a half-marathon off my bucket list. If we want this year to be different, how to set yourself up for success?
Well, to start, you may need to re-evaluate your resolution. Most guidance suggests establishing physical activity goals. The ones focused on achieving a certain outcome. These can include aims like walking 10,000 steps a day, or, in my case, running a half-marathon. 37
That’s why Christian Swann at Southern Cross University in Australia suggests that those new to working out should choose learning goals rather than performance ones. 38 So, instead of aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day, you would find three new walking routes to enjoy.
39 A 2021 study monitored 250 people new to exercise. After one year, only about 17 per cent worked out at least twice a week. Three factors significantly increased their likelihood of doing so. The first was enjoyment. People who found exercise fulfilling or pleasurable were 84 per cent more likely to work out regularly than those who didn’t. Try different types of workouts until you find one that you look forward to. 40 Participants who firmly believed they would still exercise even when tired, working late or going through a stressful life event were 73 per cent more likely to regularly attend the gym. Making exercise a priority is crucial.
In summary, setting yourself up for successful fitness resolutions means choosing the right goal for you, making exercise fun and devising a plan to stick with it.
A.Commitment was also key.
B.Sports safety came the second.
C.The challenge, of course, is getting it through.
D.There are other things to consider when creating a fitness goal.
E.What should be emphasized more is to accomplish a specific result.
F.However, outcome-based goals may actually hold back fitness ambitions.
G.The focus is on developing strategies involved in performing a certain task.
【答案】36.C 37.F 38.G 39.D 40.A
36.根据上文“Whether you are a couch potato or fitness enthusiast, the start of a new year is a great time to set an exercise goal.(无论你是喜欢窝在沙发上看电视的人,还是热衷于健身的人,新年伊始都是设定健身目标的绝佳时机)”以及后文“A study of more than 1000 people found that only about half of them sustained resolutions for a year. I, for one, have tried and failed for years to tick running a half-marathon off my bucket list. If we want this year to be different, how to set yourself up for success?(一项针对 1000 多人的研究发现,只有约半数人能将新年决心坚持一整年。
37.根据上文“Well, to start, you may need to re-evaluate your resolution. Most guidance suggests establishing physical activity goals. The ones focused on achieving a certain outcome. These can include aims like walking 10,000 steps a day, or, in my case, running a half-marathon.(首先,你可能需要重新审视自己的目标设定。大多数建议都主张设定具体的体育锻炼目标。这些目标旨在达成某种特定的结果。比如每天走10000步,或者像我这样,参加半程马拉松比赛)”可知,前文介绍了常见的结果导向型运动目标(如每天走1万步、跑半马),后文则转折提出新手应选择学习型目标而非表现型目标,说明结果导向型目标存在不足。F选项“然而,基于结果的目标实际上可能会阻碍健身抱负”能实现前后逻辑的转折,引出后文的新观点。故选F。
38.根据上文“That’s why Christian Swann at Southern Cross University in Australia suggests that those new to working out should choose learning goals rather than performance ones.(这就是为什么澳大利亚南十字星大学的克里斯蒂安·斯旺建议,对于刚开始锻炼的人而言,应当设定学习目标而非成绩目标)”可知,前文提出新手应选学习型目标,空格处需对学习型目标进行具体解释。
39.根据后文“A 2021 study monitored 250 people new to exercise. After one year, only about 17 per cent worked out at least twice a week. Three factors significantly increased their likelihood of doing so. The first was enjoyment. People who found exercise fulfilling or pleasurable were 84 per cent more likely to work out regularly than those who didn’t. Try different types of workouts until you find one that you look forward to.( 2021年的一项研究对250名初次开始锻炼的人进行了跟踪调查。
40.根据上文“A 2021 study monitored 250 people new to exercise. After one year, only about 17 per cent worked out at least twice a week. Three factors significantly increased their likelihood of doing so. The first was enjoyment. People who found exercise fulfilling or pleasurable were 84 per cent more likely to work out regularly than those who didn’t. Try different types of workouts until you find one that you look forward to.( 2021年的一项研究对250名初次开始锻炼的人进行了跟踪调查。一年后,仅有约17%的人每周至少锻炼两次。有三个因素显著提高了他们坚持锻炼的可能性。第一个因素是乐趣。那些觉得锻炼既有意义又令人愉悦的人,比那些不这么认为的人定期锻炼的可能性高出84%。尝试不同的锻炼方式,直到找到一种你期待参与的运动)”以及后文“Participants who firmly believed they would still exercise even when tired, working late or going through a stressful life event were 73 per cent more likely to regularly attend the gym. 故选A。

One possible version:
AI, our friend or our enemy?
Last weekend, our Student Union organized a thought-provoking debate on “AI, our friend or our enemy?”, where teams presented compelling arguments while the audience engaged in lively discussions. The pros emphasized AI’s benefits in education and healthcare, whereas the cons warned about job displacement and privacy risks.
Personally, I realized that although AI brings challenges, its value depends on how we use it. The debate erased my initial fear by showing AI as a tool rather than a threat. This debate helped students develop critical thinking about technology.
What’s your view on AI? I eagerly await readers’ comments on this eye-opening activity!

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle (毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers' warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay (沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking (嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I'd force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Today she showed up in a raincoat.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Today she showed up in a raincoat. Seeing her standing in the heavy rain with all the body wet, I finally could not control myself and shouted at her, “Why do you look so flustered? I don’t need you to take me home. I feel ashamed to have a mother like you!” Suddenly, Mom was shocked and silent. Maybe, she had never thought that I would have that feeling of her appearance and our home condition. She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I’m trying my best to earn our living, and I’m sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I had known that if I wanted to get what others had, I should spare no efforts to study hard and get it by myself.

Step one, know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically filled the remaining spaces, concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing, and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each step to practice, practice and practice.

31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment. B.Education.
