Eight years ago, then in my mid-40s, I overheard an older man ask a young girl: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
She cheerfully listed a(n) 1 range of dreams: vet, painter, computer coder. I listened with 2 , but soon it changed into unease. She still had time to become any of those things. Yet at my age, no one was asking me that question anymore. More importantly, I had 3 asking myself that question.
That conversation stayed in my mind, and I woke up the next morning still feeling 4 . There are many reasons midlife often gets 5 as a period of “crisis,” sitting at the bottom of a U-shaped curve (曲线) of life happiness, but “as you begin to stop making decisions, it won’t be long before you have 6 actually making decisions,” one researcher said. I decided to 7 . A(n) 8 Google search of “What are the hardest things you can do” led me to obstacle course racing (OCR, 障碍赛).
Growing up as a skinny kid, I had always wanted to be 9 . In reality, though, I was mostly picked last for teams and 10 the bench. OCR became my answer to the older man’s question. For the last six years, I’ve 11 almost every day to become something I always wanted to be as a little girl but never thought 12 . As a competitive athlete, I’ve raced more than 50 times and 13 often in my age group.
Nothing in my younger years 14 I could develop such abilities. However, by drawing on the perspective (思维方式), experience and wisdom I now possess as an adult, I made it happen. Your 15 may differ from mine, but you, too, can bring it to life.

Passage 7
Recently, my 15-year-old daughter asked me if I’d go for a run with her. On that grey, misty day, her invitation was exactly the 1 I needed. I did want to run, and her company was the perfect motivation.
We set off as soon as we both felt ready. We started slowly, stopping for restrooms whenever necessary, without any 2 or annoyance from either. Gradually, we 3 into a smooth rhythm and then picked up the pace on our way back. We were both happy to run 4 side by side, yet we also chatted 5 — sometimes about her time with friends, sometimes just minor daily chores, all simple but 6 .
Actually, our 7 over running grew from our walking habit during the pandemic (流行病).Back then, we walked miles and miles almost every day, 8 the valleys, railway tracks and bridge underpasses together. What began as a way to get out of the house turned into a joyful 9 . Those shared experiences taught us how to support each other and face challenges together. However, I had never imagined these walks would evolve into 10 at any point.
Now, after this recent run, I feel more than lucky to have a daughter who wants to 11 with me, loves doing the same things as me and whose 12 I truly enjoy. And I don’t 13 it to last forever. She will leave for university, and I won’t be able to 14 . But right now, running with my daughter makes me so happy on many levels. Ethan Wargo, 9, sets up a “compliments stand (赞美小摊)” on his lawn to offer passersby praise.
1 by an “insult (侮辱) stand” from his favorite novel, rather than embracing negativity, he decided to do the 2 by giving out free compliments.
Soon, neighbors noticed this special stand, and a steady 3 of visitors stopped by. “Once I got my first customer, I thought, ‘I should keep doing this,’” Ethan recalled and 4 added that seeing people smile was his favorite part. By employing the secret 5 — asking everyone about themselves, Ethan has given personalized compliments to many people over a month.
One memorable 6 was with Rainbow Kaelin, who lives nearby. She spotted the stand and 7 when driving home. “I saw that it said ‘Free compliments,’ and I thought it was so sweet,” Kaelin said, her voice 8 with the memory. When she mentioned that she was 9 a new employee, Ethan’s response came without 10 : “I hope she learns a lot from you.” Kaelin thanked him and started to drive off, but Ethan — realizing his compliment wasn’t quite right — 11 up to her car. “Your name is so unique,” he added. “He genuinely wanted to make people’s 12 ,” Kaelin recalled.

Passage 9
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. My husband was taking care of our baby girl so that my six-year-old son and I could do some yard work, just the two of us. It was sure to be 1 . But soon, the clouds of mosquitos seemed 2 to our bug spray (喷雾). I was sweating, itchy, and arguing with my son about how to pull weeds. I had told him the “right” way — getting those weeds out from the bottom, by the roots, 3 them entirely.
However, my son went about things in his own way. He pulled the 4 of the weeds off, moving quickly down the line as he left the remaining part still in the soil. Somehow, I found this to be incredibly 5 . Why couldn’t he do it in my way and save me the time of having to 6 his portion (部分)? Why did he do it at all if he wasn’t going to do it properly?
“If you do as told, we’d be done earlier and 7 a longer period before we would have to return and pull weeds next time,” I said, trying to keep my tone 8 .
He went back to his work, shaking dirt from his handful of growing things and throwing 9 stems into our shared basket. “People do things 10 , Mom,” he said innocently.
My fire soon faded, replaced by the humbling 11 that I’d just received a valuable 12 from the person that I was supposed to be teaching. While trying to 13 my baby girl, my kindergartener, and the yard work, 14 was a lifeline for me. But my way was, perhaps, not the best way after all. His time shouldn’t be 15 . His job was to be a kid and take his time, for as long as he was able.

But after 8 running, I decided to give it a try.” However, the sport ended up being quite 9 . Currently, she keeps running on a false leg made out of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber blade (刀锋) she uses, specifically designed for 10 , costs about $10,000.
But Hunt-Broersma says her 11 has been well worthwhile. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself again and gave me a sense of 12 . After some more research, she realized that billions of such single-use plastic cups are abandoned globally each year, a practice that adds significant 4 pressure.

Becoming a regular at the corner coffee shop was an accident. It began when my car 1 nearby on a rainy Monday morning. While waiting for repairs, I took shelter there, ordering a black coffee just to 2 my presence.
The next day, I dropped by again. The barista (咖啡师) remembered my 3 : “Large black, no sugar?” I nodded, surprised. That small recognition made me feel 4 in a city where I’d lived without being known for years.
Soon, visiting the coffee shop became a 5 . Not for the coffee, but for the 6 : the professor grading papers, the young mother with her baby... We were all background characters in each other’s lives, yet our 7 visits formed an unspoken bond.

Now I go there not when my car breaks down, but when my 12 does. The professor shares crossword clues; we celebrate the first steps of the young mother’s baby. Though we 13 briefly, the communication has become my steadfast anchor (精神支柱).

Passage 14

I wanted to be master of my own 4 , so I had to recognize my strengths and play to my weaknesses. What I wanted to make 5 was a trip to the north pole.
People with MD feel the cold. So why did I want to go to one of the most extreme, cold and 6 places on Earth? I’d read about Chris Cope, who wanted to go to the north pole to raise money for MD, and it had 7 my adventurous spirit: I wanted to raise awareness about the 8 , but I also wanted to find out what I was capable of. I firmly believe I’m very 9 .
In the two years it had taken to organize the expedition, my muscles had worsened but we 10 regardless. The unpleasant life coaching and cold training helped me to assess how my body would behave in extreme cold, which made me aware of what to 11 .
I had an amazing team around me, 12 the four different flights we took to get to the inner Arctic ice shelf were nevertheless discouraging. While we were on the ice, the runway 13 and we had to wait for it to refreeze. Once we reached the north pole, I was bitterly exhausted and a complete mess.
