Learning Network Mastery Day: E-learning Development
Our Mastery Day focuses on developing your e-learning development skills. You’ll learn some key concepts and features of some authoring tools — specialized software designed to create interactive and engaging digital learning content. Join us for this day of practical workshops in Edinburgh on 25 September 2025.
See the full agenda below.
9:45 am — Workshop 1: Rise
Speaker: Martin Sinclair
Rise is loved for its speed and simplicity, but too often the results are samey In this session, we’ll explore how to break free from the blocky look and create courses that feel like they belong to your client’s brand and digital identity. Together we’ll start with a brand brief, taking inspiration from a client’s website and style guide to set up a project.
By the end, you’ll have fresh and novel ideas and practical techniques to help you transform any Rise project into something polished and purposeful.
11:45 am — Workshop 2: Evolve
Speakers: Hazel Pike, Hugh Kelly
In this hands-on workshop the Mapal LXD team will invite you to build your own e-learning module (模块) using one of their pre-prepared storyboards and a set of images and videos.
By the end you will have a working module to share, a toolkit (工具包) of design techniques to take away and plenty of ideas for how to make Evolve projects more creative and fun.
2:15 pm — Workshop 3: Storyline
Speaker: Chris Hodgson
In this session, Chris Hodgson will help you unlock more creative potential in Articulate Storyline.
He will guide you through the process of building a multiple choice quiz styled as an interactive board game experience, complete with dynamic question delivery. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to explore a range of advanced Storyline techniques that go far beyond the basics.

Katalin Karikó along with her colleague Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 for the development of messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.
Karikó was born in January 1955, in a small village in Hungary. She had an ambition from early on to become a scientist. As a young adult, she became interested in mRNA, which carries DNA instructions to the protein-making engine of cells. She hoped that mRNA could play a key role in the treatment of various diseases. It became her mission to make her dream a reality to help cure patients. However, Karikó faced a shortage of money for her research in her country, and she then faced the choice of stop ping and doing something not connected to her mission or continuing her research at the price of having to leave her country.
After searching for posts and scholarships worldwide, Karikó accepted an offer from Temple University in Philadelphia for a postdoctoral fellowship. Karikó and her husband gave up everything they had in their homeland and bought a one-way ticket to the U. S., where they knew no one. She was aware of the risks but didn’t feel discouraged. As she put it in an award acceptance speech, “Follow your dreams and don’t hesitate to learn anything from anyone.”
She was initially on track to become a full professor but received repeated fund rejections. Undeterred by the problems and challenges, she chose to continue her research. By focusing on what mattered to her every day, she “accidentally” met her work partner Drew Weissman who was also interested in mRNA. They teamed up to work on mRNA and published papers about their groundbreaking discovery for years. Then the pandemic hit the world. The changed mRNA technology Karikó and Weissman invented was then used in vaccines that prevented the infection effectively.
Karikó’s life is a testament to finding one’s passion and then pursuing it every single day. Many of us know what we are fond of, but we are not good self-motivators on a daily basis.
4. What can we learn about Karikó from paragraph 2?
A. She had a clear sense of purpose. B. She was poor when she was young.
C. She was hesitant to leave her country. D. She longed to be a doctor to cure patients.
5. What does the underlined part “Undeterred by” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Being afraid of. B. Not motivated by.
C. Being unaware of. D. Not discouraged by.
6. What is probably the main contribution of Karikó?
A. Simplifying the mRNA technology. B. Making the structure of mRNA clear.
C. Laying the foundation for mRNA vaccines. D. Developing a vaccine for a serious disease.
7. What can we learn from Karikó’s success?
A. Every minute counts. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. D. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Wake up energetically at 6 am, exercise for over an hour after freshening up, and study productively throughout the day. This daily routine is frequently featured in vlogs on social media with the theme of “self-discipline (自律)”.
But when trying out such a schedule, many of us may feel exhausted. Is it just because we are lazy? Why do some people seem to have so much energy?
Genetic differences, to start with, can significantly influence our energy levels. A tiny part in our DNA called SNPs can help to explain 8.4 percent of fatigue (疲劳) cases, according to a 2018 study. A study published in the journal Nature reported that, in general, genes affect tiredness by an amount ranging from 6 to 50 percent.
Nevertheless, there’s a whole lot more you can explore about your energy levels.
The food you eat gives you energy. However, there’s an often-ignored element-Vitamin D. A study published in 2019 in the journal Nutrients noted that older adults with reduced vitamin D levels experienced fatigue more than those with normal levels. You can get a sufficient amount of it by sunbathing or consuming enough Vitamin-D-rich foods, such as fish, eggs and milk.
Another analysis published in Nutrients found that eating foods high in saturated fat (饱和脂肪) is linked to excessive daytime sleepiness. These foods probably include some of your favorites: butter, cheese, ice cream, and fried foods.
Even if a workout leaves you sweaty and out of breath, exercise can actually increase your energy. “When you exercise, you release hormones like adrenaline (肾上腺素),” Sabrena Jo, an expert at the American Council on Exercise, told the Health website. “This hormone actually tells our bodies to ignore feelings of pain and fatigue while enhancing blood flow to large muscles.” This “excitement” in your body can last for several hours.
Exercise helps, but only to a point. Those who exercise too frequently may experience negative impacts on their energy levels.
It’s also important to note that low energy levels could be your body’s way of telling you that you have an underlying problem. Iron deficiency (缺铁) and anemia (贫血) are two examples of health conditions that can increase fatigue.
8. Why do some people seem to have more energy than others, according to the text?
A. They are strict with themselves. B. They follow a disciplined routine.
C. They are born naturally energetic. D. They have more SNPs to stay active.
9. What can we learn about Vitamin D?
A. We can get it by bathing in the sun.
B. Its levels are definitely lower in older adults.
C. Its effect on our energy is universally recognized.
D. The larger amount of it we get, the more energetic we will be.
10. What can be inferred about the effect of exercise on our energy levels?
A. It reduces the body’s need for rest. B. It constantly boosts our energy levels.
C. It can lead to tiredness if done too often. D. It slows down the release of adrenaline.
11. What might it indicate if you constantly feel low on energy?
A. You are simply lazy and lack motivation.
B. You may have some health issue that needs attention.
C. You must adjust your diet and increase vitamin D intake.
D. You should surely exercise more to boost your energy levels.
D
Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more While.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.
12. What does the author think of philosophical stories?
A. The meaning behind is very obvious.
B. They are extremely precise and formal.
C. They often cause conflicts among readers.
D. They are engaging and inspire critical thinking.
13. Which category might “Christmas” fall into according to paragraph 4?
A. Social constructionism. B. Anti-realism.
C. Biological realism. D. Literary realism.
14. What is Black No More in paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Racial issues caused by skin colors.
B. A society view on race and self-image.
C. Black people accepted by the white society.
D. The origin of sun bathing among white people.
15. What is the best title of the text?
A. Stories Made Easy B. Stories to Think with
C. Positions in Philosophy D. Nature of Philosophical Writing
A fixed mindset of interest can harm creativity and innovation. If people believe they are limited to only a few particular interests and, in consequence, do not explore other areas, they may miss seeing important connections across different dimensions. ____16____ Those who with a growth mindset are also more likely to be creative when solving problems.
____17____ In June, we published findings from an intervention that succeeded in that aim. In two studies involving more than 700 first- year liberal arts undergraduates, we began by assessing how our participants saw themselves. The majority held strong interests in the arts, humanities and social sciences. ____18____
We then randomly assigned students to either our intervention or a study skills module. Our intervention included reading and reflective writing activities that helped students think about interests and passions as cultivated rather than as simply found and fixed. ____19____ The study skills module had a similar set of exercises but with an emphasis on building classic skills, such as time management and active learning.
These students were required to take at least one math and science course during their first year That meant we could check how the intervention may have influenced their perspectives on math and science.
By the end of the year, students who had received the intervention were more interested in their required math and science courses than those who received the study skills module —— and this boost was particularly apparent among students who initially reported that they were not a“ math- and- science person”. ____20____ These students became more skilled in math and science and grew into interdisciplinary (跨学科的) scholars.
A. So can a growth mindset of interest be taught?
B. How can a growth mindset of interest be cultivated?
C. Meanwhile, a growth mindset of interest comes with many advantages.
D. Moreover, most reported that they were not a “math- and- science person”
E. They also earned better grades in courses than those receiving the study skills module.
F. However, a growth mindset of interest can fuel people's further exploration to different fields.
G. For example, students read an article stating the benefits of viewing interests as developable.

It was a hot day in New York City. I had brunch with a friend and picked up my new glasses. All done and headed back on the train. I wanted to yell at a couple of people for their rude behavior, but wisely just sat quietly.
An old black gentleman entered the far end of the train car. In worn but neat clothes, he tipped his faded cap and greeted everyone with a warm “Good afternoon, folks.” Most ignored him, with cold blank faces. Then, he started to sing. I didn’t turn my head, but I felt a smile in my soul. Many people ask for money on the train, but I always feel happy when someone offers music instead. It feels like a gift.
I let the notes settle in for a second before my eyes wandered. A young boy across from me, maybe ten, watched him, swaying (摇摆) to the rhythm, his mother too distracted by her phone to notice.
He started his second song and my heart did a happy dance. “Lean on me, when you’re not strong. I’ll be your friend...” I love that song! Without thinking, I softly sang a little harmony with him. Right away, I decided he could have the $5 bill in my purse.
He looked tall and thin, but he had a strong voice and kind energy. Life had clearly been hard for him, but he still stood tall and carried himself with quiet dignity.
I rolled the bill tightly and waited for him to make his way to me. He held the overhead bar to steady himself as he inched down the car, pausing briefly beside each seat like he was waiting for a sign — though no one glanced up. No one was making any moves to give him coins or reach for their wallet.
Paragraph 1: Somehow, he noticed me singing along.

A Simplifying the mRNA technology.
A 5. D 6. C 7. C

C
C 9. A 10. C 11. B

根据第三段中“Genetic differences, to start with, can significantly influence our energy levels. A tiny part in our DNA called SNPs can help to explain 8.4 percent of fatigue (疲劳) cases, according to a 2018 study. (首先,遗传差异会极大地影响我们的能量水平。根据2018年的一项研究,我们DNA中的一个小部分,即单核苷酸多态性(SNPs),可以解释8.4%的疲劳案例。)”可知,基因差异对能量水平有显著影响,所以有些人似乎比其他人更有精力是因为他们生来就精力充沛,故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“You can get a sufficient amount of it by sunbathing or consuming enough Vitamin-D-rich foods, such as fish, eggs and milk. (晒太阳或食用足够的富含维生素D的食物,如鱼、鸡蛋和牛奶,来获得足够的维生素D。)”可知,我们可以通过晒太阳来获取维生素D,故选A项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Exercise helps, but only to a point. Those who exercise too frequently may experience negative impacts on their energy levels. (锻炼有帮助,但也有限度。那些锻炼过于频繁的人可能会在能量水平方面受到负面影响。)”可知,运动在一定程度上有帮助,但过于频繁地运动可能会对能量水平产生负面影响,也就是会导致疲劳,故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“It’s also important to note that low energy levels could be your body’s way of telling you that you have an underlying problem. (还需要注意的是,低能量水平可能是你的身体在告诉你,你有一个潜在的问题。)”可知,如果你一直感觉精力不足,这可能意味着你有潜在的健康问题需要注意,故选B项。

D 13. A 14. B 15. B

根据第二段“There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.(没有什么能像一个好故事那样吸引人的注意力,有一些伟大的哲学故事会让读者感到愉悦和吸引人,而不是让读者昏昏欲睡)”以及第三段“One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.(这其中最重要的一点是,与形式哲学不同的是,故事并不会把自己的意思挂在明面上——它们需要解释,而且常常表达出相互矛盾的观点,让读者纠结)”可知,哲学故事可以使读者有参与感和激发批判性思维。
根据第四段“Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).(让我们来考虑一下哲学家所称之为种族的形而上学——这是探究种族是否真实的哲学问题。关于这个问题,你可能持有三个主要观点。你可能认为一个人的种族写在他们的基因中(被称为“生物现实主义”)。或者,你可能认为种族是社会上真实存在的,就像星期几或货币一样(“社会建构主义”)。最后,你可能认为种族是虚幻的——它们更像一种魔法精灵而不是星期四或美元(“反现实主义”))”可知,Christmas为一个节日,是社会的共有认知,应属于“社会建构主义”。故选A项。
根据第五段“A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.(哲学家以枯燥乏味的方式表达自己而臭名昭著。大多数哲学作品的理想是精确、清晰,以及那种不留痕迹的概念分析)”以及最后一段“Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.(像这样富有哲理的故事给生活带来了更多的技术作品。它们是用来思考的故事)”以及纵观全文可知,文章主要介绍了哲学的抽象而复杂的理念往往是通过一个个有趣的小故事的形式体现的,它会启发读者思考,所以B项“Stories to Think with(可供思考的故事)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。
第二节 (共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
These students were required to take at least one math and science course during their first year. That meant we could check how the intervention may have influenced their perspectives on math and science.
F 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. E
根据上文“If people believe they are limited to only a few particular interests and, in consequence, do not explore other areas, they may miss seeing important connections across different dimensions. (如果人们认为自己只局限于几个特定的兴趣,因此不去探索其他领域,他们可能会错过在不同维度上的重要联系。)”以及下文“Those who with a growth mindset are also more likely to be creative when solving problems. (那些拥有成长型思维的人在解决问题时也更有可能具有创造性。)”可知,空处要讲述相反的情况,与下文内容相符,所以选项F“然而,兴趣的成长心态可以推动人们对不同领域的进一步探索。”符合语境。故选F。
【17题详解】
空处为段落主题。根据本段内容“In June, we published findings from an intervention that succeeded in that aim. In two studies involving more than 700 first- year liberal arts undergraduates, we began by assessing how our participants saw themselves. The majority held strong interests in the arts, humanities and social sciences. (今年6月,我们发表了一项成功实现这一目标的干预研究结果。在涉及700多名文科一年级本科生的两项研究中,我们首先评估了参与者如何看待自己。大多数人对艺术、人文和社会科学有着浓厚的兴趣。)”可知本段讲述了对培养兴趣的成长心态的研究结果。所以选项A“那么,可以培养兴趣的成长心态吗? ”符合语境。故选A。
根据上文“The majority held strong interests in the arts, humanities and social sciences. (大多数人对艺术,人文和社会科学有着浓厚的兴趣。)”可知下文可能是对理科的看法,与前文形成对比。所以选项D“此外,大多数人表示他们不是“数学和科学的人””符合语境。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Our intervention included reading and reflective writing activities that helped students think about interests and passions as cultivated rather than as simply found and fixed. (我们的干预包括阅读和反思性写作活动帮助学生将兴趣和激情视为培养出来的,而不是简单地发现和固定下来的。)”可知,下文可能要具体说明做法,所以选项G“例如学生们读了一篇文章,阐述了将兴趣视为发展能力的好处。”符合语境,故选G。
【20题详解】
根据上文“By the end of the year, students who had received the intervention were more interested in their required math and science courses than those who received the study skills module—— and this boost was particularly apparent among students who initially reported that they were not a“ math- and- science person”. (到年底, 接受干预的学生比接受学习技能模块的学生对他们的必修数学和科学课程更感兴趣,这种提升在最初报告自己不是“数学和科学人”的学生中尤为明显。)”以及下文“These students became more skilled in math and science and grew into interdisciplinary(跨学科的) scholars. (这些学生在数学和科学方面变得更加熟练,成长为跨学科的学者。)”可知此处都是说接受干预的学生获得的益处,所以选项E“他们在课程中的成绩也比学习技能模块的学生好。”符合语境。故选E。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you!
One possible version:
Dear classmates,
I’m glad to share my English learning journey with all of you. A year ago, I signed up for our school’s English Debate Club. At first, I lacked confidence. Thankfully, my teammates were incredibly supportive — they encouraged me to look for debate resources online and break down different perspectives on each topic. After months of consistent practice, I slowly grew more confident, and I could finally express my ideas clearly during debates.
I’ve gained two important takeaways from the experience. First, learning English through real-life scenarios like debates helps you master English much faster. Second, learning English in a group means you can get timely help when you’re stuck.
I hope my story can give you some useful inspiration, and I wish you great fun in your English learning! Thank you!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: It was still hot and sticky inside the car, but something had changed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Somehow, he noticed me singing along. He looked up and slowly walked toward me, his eyes shining with surprise and warmth. I slipped the rolled bill into his rough hand, and he gave me a grateful nod. Then, leaning closer, he whispered, “Sing with me, sister.” Without hesitation, I joined him. Our voices blended, his strong and soulful, mine soft but steady. For a moment, the crowded train car felt like a tiny concert hall, filled not with heat and impatience, but with harmony.
It was still hot and sticky inside the car, but something had changed. One by one, passengers lifted their heads, listening. The young boy’s swaying turned into clapping, his laughter breaking through the dull silence. A few others began humming along, and even his mother put down her phone. When the song ended, coins and bills appeared in the man’s cap from every direction. He stood taller, pride glowing in his smile, and I felt a quiet joy — proof that even in a weary city, music could open hearts and bring strangers together.
