In 2020, the teen was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, and he survived a successful bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植) and rounds of chemotherapy (化疗). Thankfully, Adeola is now out of the hospital. During his recovery, he found out that he had qualified for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask for a dream wish from Make-A-Wish Mississippi. While many teens would choose a memorable Disney trip, meet a favorite figure or get a PlayStation, Abraham instead chose to feed the homeless in his local community. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is famous for brightening the lives of children suffering from critical illnesses by meeting their wishes. A wish typically falls into three categories: a wish to have something, go somewhere or meet someone. Abraham’s charitable wish to give came as a surprise to the organization. Linda Sermons, a Make-A-Wish Mississippi representative, said that Abraham’s generous wish was the first of its kind in the organization’s 35-year history. She was impressed with the teen’s maturity and sense of sympathy. Make-A-Wish Mississippi approved of the teen’s wish in a big way. They created a service named after the teen, called Abraham’s Table, which would provide free meals to the homeless every month for the next year. Local businesses generously donated food and supplies, and receivers gathered in Jackson’s Poindexter Park for the meals. Abraham and his proud mom personally attended and handed out the food. Abraham’s Table fed more than 80 people at its first event. Abraham said it warmed his heart when the receivers came back to thank him for the meal he provided. Abraham now wants to inspire other teens to get more involved in local charities. He also wants to continue his mission of helping others by starting his own nonprofit that helps those experiencing food insecurity. 4. What made Abraham a remarkable boy? A. His exceptional choice for a dream wish. B. His great sufferings from a critical disease. C. His special qualifications for a dream wish. D. His successful survival from a blood disorder. 5. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Eighty people or so benefited from Abraharn’s Table. B. Abraham’s act of kindness received positive reaction. C. The organization provided financial help for the homeless. D. The local businesses were greatly appreciated by the receivers. 6. According to the passage, which words can best describe Abraham? A. Energetic and determined. B. Mature and intelligent. C. Sympathetic and selfless. D. Generous and cautious. 7. Which of the following can best describe the story? A. Hard work always pays off. B. It’s a blessing to be a giver. C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Miracles often occur in bad luck. C After afternoon classes, it’s common to see teenagers take out their phones. Some look through educational apps to review math formulas (数学公式) while others jump into online games or check social media. This daily sight shows the Internet is now part of teens’ lives — they can’t live without it. But it has two sides: helping or hurting them, especially if used unbalanced. First, the Internet is a strong learning tool. Teens get many things, like free math classes on fun TED-Ed science videos, breaking regular classroom limits. A 2023 survey found 68% of high schoolers use online platforms to help study, and 45% of them got better grades in English, physics and more. It also builds social skills: joining international reading groups lets teens practice talking with different cultures — key for future jobs. But we can’t overlook its bad parts. A Journal of Adolescent Health study said teens online over 4 hours a day are 2.3 times more likely to do badly in school. They put aside homework for games or social media, so test scores drop. Peking University found 31% of teens have sleep problems and 25% gain weight from long sitting and late screen time. What’s worse, some focus on virtual worlds, avoid family, and feel worried offline. Schools are very important for helping teens use the Internet in a smart way. They need to give classes that teach students useful online skills. In these classes, students learn to tell good educational websites from bad ones, set daily limits on screen time, and notice signs of Internet addiction. Besides, teachers can plan offline activities, like hiking or debate competitions. These activities take teens’ attention away from screens and help them enjoy real-life fun again. In short, the Internet has two sides. With family, friend and school help, teens can use it well — to grow healthily. 8. How does the author support the main idea of paragraph 2? A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions. C. By comparing different things. D. By giving examples and numbers. 9. What does the underlined word “virtual” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Real. B. Online. C. Happy. D. Busy. 10. What can schools do to help teens use the Internet wisely? A. Offer them all kinds of apps. B. Stop their using the Internet. C. Teach them to choose good websites. D. Allow them more time on social media. 11. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain why teens like online games. B. To talk about the Internet’s effects on teens and how to guide them. C. To compare educational apps and social media. D. To show how schools help teens get better grades. D Not long ago, I realized I wasn’t improving much at what I cared about, even though I tried hard. After talking to others and doing some research, I found that top people and teams in all fields have a habit we can copy: they move back and forth between two zones — the learning zone and the performance zone. In the learning zone, our focus is on getting better. We try new things and practice things we’re not quite perfect at yet. Making mistakes is expected, even welcomed, because that’s how we learn and grow. This is different from the performance zone. When we’re performing, we want to do our best. We focus on the skills we’ve already mastered and try to reduce mistakes. Many of us don’t improve much even though we work hard. The reason is we almost always stay in the performance zone. This stops our long-term growth and even affects our performance. So what does the learning zone look like? Let’s take Demosthenes as an example. He was a political leader and the best lawyer in ancient Greece. To become great, he didn’t just do lawyer’s work (that was his performance zone). Instead, he did things to get better: he learned law with teachers’ help, and since being a lawyer needs persuading others, he also studied great speeches and acting. Besides, courts were very noisy then, so he practiced speaking by the ocean, making his voice loud enough over the waves. It’s this kind of practice in the learning zone that brings real improvement — not just spending time on doing tasks well. But this doesn’t mean the performance zone is useless — it’s quite valuable. Staying in this zone lets us do things as well as possible. It can also encourage us, and tell us what to focus on next when we go back to the learning zone. So the way to do well is to switch between the two zones: we should build our skills on purpose in the learning zone first, then use those skills in the performance zone. This way, we keep getting better. 12. You are probably in the learning zone when you ______. A. try to learn new things for improvement B. practice things you’re perfect at already C. try your best to avoid making mistakes D. focus on the skills you have mastered 13. Why does the writer talk about Demosthenes in Paragraph 3? A. To explain why many of us don’t improve much. B. To suggest some ways of changing learning habits. C. To stress the importance of being in the learning zone. D. To show how people improve skills in the learning zone. 14. What can we infer about the relationship between the learning zone and the performance zone? A. They are completely independent. B. The performance zone guides future learning. C. More time in the performance zone improves skills. D. The learning zone only fits beginners. 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Working Hard Helps Make Improvement B. The Real Value of Learning and Performing C. The Way to Get Better at Things You Care about D. Focusing on Skills Development Helps You Grow A learning log(日志) is an educational tool designed to improve children’s learning experience. ____16____ It can be applied by homeschoolers and other students accepting non-traditional education as well. A 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“During his recovery, he found out that he had qualified for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask for a dream wish from Make-A-Wish Mississippi. While many teens would choose a memorable Disney trip, meet a favorite figure or get a PlayStation, Abraham instead chose to feed the homeless in his local community. (在康复期间,他发现自己有资格得到一个千载难逢的机会,可以在‘许愿密西西比’许下一个梦想。虽然很多青少年会选择难忘的迪士尼之旅,遇见最喜欢的人物或得到一个游戏机,Abraham却选择了为当地社区的无家可归者提供食物。)”可知,是Abraham对梦想的特殊选择使他成为一个非凡的孩子。故选A项。 根据第三段中“Make-A-Wish Mississippi approved of the teen’s wish in a big way. They created a service named after the teen, called Abraham’s Table, which would provide free meals to the homeless every month for the next year. Local businesses generously donated food and supplies, and receivers gathered in Jackson’s Poindexter Park for the meals. (‘许愿密西西比’在很大程度上支持了这名少年的愿望。他们以这名少年的名字创建了一项名为‘Abraham的餐桌’的服务,在接下来的一年里,每个月都为无家可归的人提供免费的食物。当地企业慷慨地捐赠了食物和物资,接受者聚集在Jackson的Poindexter公园参加宴会。)”以及“Abraham said it warmed his heart when the receivers came back to thank him for the meal he provided. (Abraham,当接受帮助的人回来感谢他提供的食物时,他感到很温暖。)”等内容可以推知,Abraham的善举得到了积极的反应。故选B项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Linda Sermons, a Make-A-Wish Mississippi representative, said that Abraham’s generous wish was the first of its kind in the organization’s 35-year history. She was impressed with the teen’s maturity and sense of sympathy. (Linda Sermons是‘许愿密西西比’的一名代表,她说,Abraham的慷慨愿望是该组织35年历史上的第一个。那个少年的成熟和同情心给她留下了深刻的印象。)”可以推知,Abraham富有同情心并且慷慨无私。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,根据第一段中“While many teens would choose a memorable Disney trip, meet a favorite figure or get a PlayStation, Abraham instead chose to feed the homeless in his local community. (虽然很多青少年会选择难忘的迪士尼之旅,遇见最喜欢的人物或得到一个游戏机,Abraham却选择了为当地社区的无家可归者提供食物。)”以及第三段中“Abraham said it warmed his heart when the receivers came back to thank him for the meal he provided. (Abraham说,当接受帮助的人回来感谢他提供的食物时,他感到很温暖。)”可知,本文主要讲述了身患重病而康复的13岁的Abraham许下一个梦想,为当地社区的无家可归者提供食物,作为一个给予者,慷慨无私地帮助他人,使Abraham感到无比幸福的故事。从而推知,选项B“做一个给予者是一种祝福。”最能描述这个故事。故选B项。 C After afternoon classes, it’s common to see teenagers take out their phones. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段中的“Teens get many things, like free math classes on fun TED-Ed science videos, breaking regular classroom limits. A 2023 survey found 68% of high schoolers use online platforms to help study, and 45% of them got better grades in English, physics and more.(青少年可以获取很多资源,例如趣味TED-Ed科学视频上的免费数学课,打破传统课堂的限制。2023年一项调查发现,68%的高中生借助线上平台学习,其中45%的学生在英语、物理等科目取得更好成绩)”可知,作者举例子并引用调查数据来支撑观点。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“What’s worse, some focus on virtual worlds, avoid family, and feel worried offline.(更糟糕的是,一些孩子沉浸在virtual世界中,回避家人,在线下生活中感到焦虑)”可知,句中offline表示“线下”,与之对应的virtual含义为“线上的、虚拟的”。 根据第四段中的“In these classes, students learn to tell good educational websites from bad ones, set daily limits on screen time, and notice signs of Internet addiction.(在这些课程中,学生学会区分优质和不良教育网站,设定每日屏幕使用时长,注意网络成瘾的迹象)”可知,学校可以教学生挑选优质网站。 D Not long ago, I realized I wasn’t improving much at what I cared about, even though I tried hard. Focusing on Skills Development Helps You Grow 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“In the learning zone, our focus is on getting better. We try new things and practice things we’re not quite perfect at yet.(在学习区,我们的重点是变得更好。我们尝试新事物,练习我们尚未完全掌握的事情)”可知,当你尝试学习新事物以求进步时,你处于学习区。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Let’s take Demosthenes as an example. It’s this kind of practice in the learning zone that brings real improvement — not just spending time on doing tasks well.(以德摩斯提尼为例。 根据第四段中“But this doesn’t mean the performance zone is useless — it’s quite valuable. Staying in this zone lets us do things as well as possible. It can also encourage us, and tell us what to focus on next when we go back to the learning zone.(但这并不意味着表现区毫无用处——它相当有价值。保持在这个区域,能让我们做到最好。它也能激励我们,并告诉我们在回到学习区时下一步该关注什么)”可知,表现区能为未来的学习指明方向,即“表现区指导未来的学习”。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段“Not long ago, I realized I wasn’t improving much at what I cared about, even though I tried hard. After talking to others and doing some research, I found that top people and teams in all fields have a habit we can copy: they move back and forth between two zones — the learning zone and the performance zone.(不久前,我意识到:即便我十分努力,在自己在意的事情上却没有多大进步。在和他人交流并做了一些研究之后,我发现各行各业的顶尖人物与团队都有一种我们可以借鉴的习惯:他们在两个区域之间来回切换 —— 学习区与表现区)”可知,全文围绕“如何在我们关心的事情上真正取得进步”展开,指出在“学习区”刻意提升技能,再到“表现区”运用,二者交替才能不断进步。C项“The Way to Get Better at Things You Care about(在你在意的事情上变得更好的方法)”最能概括全文主旨。 A learning log(日志) is an educational tool designed to improve children’s learning experience. ____16____ It can be applied by homeschoolers and other students accepting non-traditional education as well.
