Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.

Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decade, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons.
As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. A. Tokyo. B. New York. C. Amsterdam. D. Sao Paulo.
B
My grandma passed away last week. My mum began the painful yet necessary task of sorting through her belongings.
“Is there anything you want from grandma’s flat?” Mum texted me.
“Her aloe (芦荟), please.” I required zero thinking time.
Sometime around 1975, Grandma, always believing good things would happen in the future, received this plant as a gift, which she appreciated and placed in her doorway. It came from the local butcher. Five years later, my mum married the butcher’s son and had me. Grandma revealed to me this particular plant was a living relationship between the two families. And so was I.
Recently, whenever we visited Grandma’s flat, I attempted to fix this concept in my children’s minds. “That was a gift your great-grandma bought your other great-grandma! It’s older than me!” Then my kids would nod and ask Grandma for a sweet.
Numerous times, Grandma gave me cuttings or clippings of the plant, hoping I might raise my own and continue the legend. Yet, every time, my new branch died with my awful gardening skills. But that didn’t used to matter, because I could turn to Grandma, who would wait and accept my disturbance without becoming upset. Then I got another clipping and tried again. But now I can’t. So, I decided that the plant will go and live with Ann, my mother-in-law, who is a genius with a greenhouse.
The plan is for Ann to keep hold of the original plant. In time, she can teach me how to deal with its cuttings properly, and then maybe one day I can settle the plant in my place.
In the meantime, Ann will allocate (分配) clippings among my relatives, as Grandma used to do. My wife’s two sisters, for example, are both better at tending plants than I am, so it is quite imaginable that they, too, will offer cuttings of the plant to their partners, spreading this loving plant across my entire extended family.
4. Why did the author want his grandma’s aloe?
A. He wanted to pass it down to others. B. He showed a preference for gardening.
C. He had a pleasant memory of the plant. D. He received it as a gift from his grandma.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s grandma?
A. Optimistic and patient. B. Generous and helpful. C. Honest and fashionable. D. Humorous and skillful.
6. The author took the aloe to his mother-in-law to
A. display his skills in gardening B. have the plant better cared for
C. announce his grandma’s death D. protect the plant from dying out
7. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Aloe: my family bond B. Aloe: a mysterious plant
C. Grandma: my life coach D. Grandma: a lovely gardener
C
After Taylor Swift, the “Mona Lisa” is probably the most recognizable female face in the world. Every day around 20,000 people stare at the Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in the Louvre. Yet it became famous not due to a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”.
Classics of art, literature and music are supposed to carry some mysterious appeal that endures across the ages. But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.
Take other celebrated works of art. Until the end of the 19th century Michelangelo’s “David” had only his fig leaf to protect him from the weather in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. He attracted more pigeons than visitors; visitors preferred the artists’ sculpture of Moses in Rome. Before the famous “Venus de Milo” was discovered in 1820, viewers were crazy about “Venus de Medici”, a delicate sculpture most people alive today have never heard of.
Much as in art, the classics of music and literature have not always been set in stone either. Today, Johann Sebastian Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750, Bach’s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville’s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.
“The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence.
8. What made the painting “Mona Lisa” well-known?
A. Its innovative artistic techniques. B. The incident of it being stolen.
C. The public’s curiosity concerning its creator. D. The long-term research on it by scholars.
9 What does Rochelle think of classics?
A. Enduring. B. Fading. C. Changeable. D. Admirable.
10. How does the author develop paragraph 4?
A. By studying the causes for people’s shifting opinions.
B. By tracing the historical development of public taste standards.
C. By citing examples of some forgotten classics regaining fame.
D. By comparing the artistic values of different classic works.
11. What might ultimately discourage the development of classics?
A. The ignorance of culture. B. The course of time.
C. The evolution of tastes. D. The lack of criticism.
D
Extreme weather events, such as tornadoes, can cause widespread damage to forests, leading to environmental and financial losses. When trees fall during these storms, ecosystems might be influenced, increasing forest management costs. As climate change worsens, severe storms are expected to become more frequent, making it important to understand how forests respond to wind stress.
While previous studies have explored how trees react to wind, it is unclear whether these responses remain the same across different forest configurations. With this aim, a team of researchers led by Associate Professor Kana Kamimura, tested how trees move under various forest arrangements and weather conditions, including how trees withstand wind.
The research aims to explain how winds directly impact trees and how trees reduce the stress from wind to survive. To achieve this, researchers set up two experimental areas of cedar trees, in November 2017. In the first plot, P-100 was made up of 3,000 trees per hectare, creating a thick forest. In the second plot, P-50, half of the trees were removed for this research, leaving 1,500 trees per hectare. Over two years, the team watched 24 trees in the dense (密集的) area and 12 in the thinned area, using tools to track the range of trees movement during various wind conditions. The tracking period included many typhoons, such as Typhoon Trami, in 2018, which caused significant damage to the thinned plot.
The researchers found that cedar trees show two completely different swaying patterns depending on wind speed. In light winds, the trees swayed at around 2 to 2.3 cycles per second, with their branches taking in much of the wind energy, protecting the trunks and roots from wind stress. However, at higher wind speeds, the trees changed to a slower swaying pattern of 0.2 to 0.5 cycles per second. In this case, the whole tree swayed together, changing force across the trunk and roots, increasing the probability of breakage or uprooting.
Interestingly the change between these two swaying patterns occurred at different wind speeds, depending on the forest density. In the dense area, the trees switched patterns at wind speeds between 1.79 and 7.44 meters per second. In contrast, in the thinned plot, the change occurred at slightly lower wind speeds, ranging from 1.57 to 5.63 meters per second.
This study offers valuable understanding for balancing thinning with wind resistance in forest management to support long-lasting forestry practices, and help forests go through extreme climate changes.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The results of the previous studies. B. The practical reasons for the research.
C The potential effects of extreme weather. D. The challenges brought by climate changes.
13. What does the underlined word “configurations” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Areas. B. Sizes. C. Types. D. Layouts.
14. What can we infer from the study conducted by the researchers?
A. The trees tend to sway more violently as the wind becomes stronger.
B. The branches of trees took in most of the wind energy in strong wind.
C. Planting trees in a thinned pattern can help protect trees from storms.
D. Trees in thinned plots change their swaying pattern in lighter winds.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To call on people to plant more trees in thinned area.
B. To raise people’s awareness of environment protection.
C. To offer ideas for a more reasonable forest management.
D. To compare the different swaying patterns of trees in storms.

How AI Will Help Predict Natural Disasters?
Beneath California lie faults — places where rocks slide past, over, or under one another. When they move at an alarming rate, the ground shakes violently, causing destructive earthquakes. Nothing can be done to stop them, but understanding where they are likely to happen and how powerful they may be means communities can prepare.
____16____ They employ seismometers (地震仪) to record seismic waves — a bit like music, with notes and rhythm changes that reveal what created them, where they lie, and how they behave.
Because California is so geologically active, the region has massive amounts of data. ____17____ Many tiny, imperceptible quakes are difficult to spot, especially when their signals are similar to background noise from traffic.
Inspired by machine-learning programs that can identify and categorize elements within images with unmatched accuracy, a researcher at Caltech applied a similar idea to seismology. He used algorithms (算法) to search for patterns of tiny quakes in seismic data and soon identified nearly two million hidden events from 2008 to 2017. ____18____
Although early programs could only find quakes similar to those they had been trained on, newer self-learning systems can recognize novel events and make predictions about the future. ____19____ They are now used across California to spot slowly slow-moving earthquake faults invisible to traditional methods.
____20____ In areas at high risk of earthquakes like Tokyo, for instance, AI software analyzes images from cameras positioned around the city to recognize fires and building collapse and to alert authorities instantly. Such systems save precious time for search and rescue. While AI will not replace human scientists, it is becoming as ordinary — and as vital — as the seismometers themselves.
A. AI may also improve earthquake early-warning systems.
B. In some way, AI, trained with enough data, may one day take the place of human instincts.
C. It is covered in so many seismometers that there is more data than human experts could reasonably handle.
D. These machine-learning programs are still evolving and have gone beyond detecting quiet quakes and hidden faults.
E. To reduce the effects of future disasters, researchers draw maps of the underworld, charting every fault and monitoring its behavior.
F. Such programs as mentioned are still being tested for real-life applications.
G. This revealed a complex network of faults that previous studies had missed.

第二节 概要写作(满分15分)
57. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Learning a new language can feel like performing magic. Suddenly, a whole other world opens up and you discover a completely new side of life. Of course, learning a language doesn't happen by magic, but rather through study. Here are some advantages about how the brain changes during language learning.
It sounds like something a child may ask: does learning new things make my brain grow bigger? It turns out that this is what language learning does to the brain. The researchers from Lund University in Sweden studied a group of students from the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, who were going through a language learning program. For a control group, the researchers selected students who were studying medicine and cognitive(认知的)science at Umea University. The researchers discovered that brain structure changed only in the language learning group. The results suggest that language learning is a promising way to keep the brain in shape, and offers cognitive benefits more than other forms of study.
Many of us dream of being able to focus better, and according to a study published in the journal Brain and Language, learning new languages could help make that dream come true. The researchers from Northwestern University tested bilingual(双语的)and monolingual(单语的)individuals using a language comprehension task. The task involved listening to a word, and then selecting the corresponding image from a group of four. Bilingual participants were obviously better at figuring out the target word. It shows that being bilingual comes with more ability to leave aside unnecessary information, which is key to increasing focus.
Several other studies have shown a link between being bilingual and delaying the beginning of Alzheimer's disease by an average of four years. The reason for this delay, the researchers believe, is that learning a language challenges our gray cells, which helps prevent them from worsening. So just like exercising your body, providing your brain with a workout like learning languages has considerable health benefits.

【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. A

9. What does Rochelle think of classics?
A. Enduring. B. Fading. C. Changeable. D. Admirable.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D

根据第一段中“Yet it became famous not due to a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”.(然而,它的声名鹊起并非因为那抹诱人的蒙娜丽莎微笑。在1911年一名工人盗走这幅杰作之前,它始终寂寂无闻——直到观众蜂拥而至,只为一睹被法国报纸称作“巨大骇人空白”的失画现场)”可知,《蒙娜丽莎》被盗的事件使其闻名于世。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.(但正如历史学家Rochelle Gurstein在新书中所言,所谓“永恒经典”实则不然。她指出:“我曾深信镌刻在石碑上的经典,其实不过是写在水中的幻影。”经典之作始终在流动变迁中。)”可推知,Rochelle认为经典作品不过是写在水中的幻影,不是永恒不变的,而是可变的。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Today, Johann Sebastian Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750, Bach’s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville’s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.(如今,约翰·塞巴斯蒂安·巴赫常被尊为古典乐巨匠。
根据最后一段““The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening.

Interestingly, the change between these two swaying patterns occurred at different wind speeds, depending on the forest density.
C. The potential effects of extreme weather.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

B. In some way AI, trained with enough data, may one day take the place of human instincts.
