The scheme is supported by the government to help them prepare for university. Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16 to 18. To ensure they feel comfortable with the preparation of leaving home, the course designed by the university accommodation provider, Unite Students, will teach students how to manage their finances and how to live independently. According to the course materials, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as what is the price of a litre of milk? and list five hot meals you can cook and how often will you wash your sheets once you move out of home? Damian Hinds, the Education Secretary, said we are conscious that going to university is one of the most exciting things that happens in your life, but it can also be very challenging. He said that an important part of education is preparing children for adulthood. So it is right that we teach them what to expect for life after school.

B
Growing up in a small coastal town, I always felt the call of the ocean. My father was a fisherman, and from an early age, he taught me to respect the sea — its power, its beauty, and its unpredictability. By the time I was twelve, I could sail a small boat on my own, navigate by the stars, and read the weather like an open book.
At eighteen, I left home to study marine biology at university. My father was proud, but I could see the worry in his eyes. “The sea has a way of pulling you in,” he said. “Just make sure you always find your way back.”
I spent years studying coral reefs and their ecosystems, traveling to some of the most remote places on Earth. But it was during a research trip to the Great Barrier Reef that I faced my greatest challenge. A sudden storm hit our research vessel, damaging our equipment and leaving us stranded near a small island.
For three days, we survived on rainwater and whatever food we could find. But what struck me most was not the danger — it was the silence. Without the hum of our boat’s engine, I could hear the reef come alive in ways I had never noticed before. The sounds of fish, the movement of the water, the rhythm of the tide — all of it felt like a song I had been too busy to hear.
When we were finally rescued, I returned home with a new understanding. My father had taught me to respect the sea, but I had learned that true respect comes not just from survival, but from listening.
I now work as a marine conservationist, dedicating my life to protecting the ocean I love. And whenever I feel lost, I remember my father’s words: “The sea has a way of pulling you in.” But I’ve learned that if you listen closely enough, it will always show you the way back.
24. What did the author learn from his father as a child?
A. How to fish in the ocean. B. How to sail and navigate.
C. How to study marine life. D. How to survive a storm.
25. What happened during the research trip?
A. The author got lost at sea. B. The vessel was damaged in a storm.
C. The team discovered a new species. D. The author was injured on the reef.
26. What did the author realize during the three days on the island?
A. The reef was more dangerous than expected.
B. Survival skills were not as important as he thought.
C. He had been overlooking the beauty of the reef's sounds.
D. He should have chosen a different career path.
27. What is the main message of the passage?
A. The ocean is a dangerous place. B. Listening is a form of respect.
C. Adventure is the best teacher. D. Family guidance is always reliable.
B 25. B 26. C 27. B

C
After an injury, some animals can regrow almost every cell in their bodies. Their abilities have long fascinated researchers. Now scientists are taking what they have learnt from these animals to human cells.
A zebrafish can go from being paralyzed (瘫痪的) to moving smoothly. Mayssa Mokalled at Washington University has identified a population of cells which are similar to human fetal astrocytes (星细胞) in the zebrafish that are important for this recovery. After an injury, astrocytes create a protective barrier around the damaged site.
When Mokalled’s team introduced the same molecules (分子) involved in the activation of the cells that achieve regeneration in zebrafish into human astrocytes, the cells started to look and behave more like those of the zebrafish. In initial studies, when the researchers transplanted the transformed human cells into mice, the cells seemed more effective at creating the protective barrier. “I would love to see this go all the way to treatment in humans,” says Mokalled.
But the distance between zebrafish and humans is wide. Almada, a stem-cell biologist, is instead looking at the lizard. Able to regenerate an entire tail, lizard are the closest living relative to humans. Humans and lizards share many of the same genes. “It’ll be more translatable to human biology, because they have a lot of the same machineries at the DNA level,” says Almada.
Almada described how a population of muscle stem cells in lizards regenerates the animal’s tail. The cells are similar to those found in mice and humans, except that the lizard version can make muscle tissue, which the mouse and human versions cannot, he says. Almada hopes to work out how the lizard cells achieve this and eventually apply that to muscle growth in humans to treat degenerative muscular diseases, strengthen muscles in older people and treat wounds.
Florian Raible, a stem-cell biologist, is studying yet another super-recovering animal — Platynereis dumerilii. “It’s a model for good regeneration, because its nervous system has similarities to that of humans, which makes it a relevant model for research,” says Raible.
28. What does the underlined phrase “Their abilities” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Scientists’ research skills.
B. Humans’ treatment methods.
C. Cells’ protective functions.
D. Animals’ regeneration features.
29. What did Mokalled find about zebrafish?
A. Its astrocytes are the same as humans’.
B. Its molecules are integrated into human cells.
C. Its protective barrier can treat human diseases.
D. Its certain cells aid recovery from being paralyzed.
30. Why are lizards studied by Almada?
A. They are expert at regenerating.
B. They have unique muscle molecules.
C. They have genes in common with humans.
D. They are distinct from humans in muscle tissue.
31. What will the text talk about next?
A. Further details of Platynereis dumerilii’s regeneration.
B. Differences between human nervous systems and those of animals.
C. Difficulties in applying animal research to human treatments.
D. The similarities between Platynereis dumerilii and other animals.
D 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第四段中的“Able to regenerate an entire tail, Lizard is the closest living relative to humans. Humans and lizards share many of the same genes.(蜥蜴可以重新长出整条尾巴,是与人类亲缘关系最近的现存生物之一,人类和蜥蜴拥有许多相同的基因)”可知,阿尔马达研究蜥蜴的原因是蜥蜴与人类拥有相同的基因。
根据最后一段中的“Florian Raible, a stem-cell biologist is studying yet another super-recovering animal — Platynereis dumerilii. “It’s a model for good regeneration, because its nervous system has similarities to that of humans, which makes it a relevant model for research.” says Raible.(干细胞生物学家弗洛里安·赖布尔正在研究另一种拥有超强修复能力的生物——杜氏阔沙蚕。赖布尔说:“这是一个优质的再生典范,因为它的神经系统与人类的神经系统有相似之处,这使它成为一个相关的研究模型。”)”可知,文章依次介绍斑马鱼、蜥蜴的再生研究,末尾刚引出多毛类蠕虫,按照行文逻辑下文会继续讲解该生物的再生具体细节。
D
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While it may sound like good advice, it’s not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far, says Scott Young, author of Get Better at Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery.
“Practice is not a cure- all.” Young explains. “It doesn’t necessarily improve your skills but rather makes them more automatic and fluent.” In his book, Young clarifies this concept with the game Tetris where players fit falling blocks to complete lines. The more you practice the faster and more accurate you become at placing the blocks. However, simply practicing doesn’t guarantee higher scores. To reach higher proficiency (精通度), one must go beyond repetitive practice and use the correct techniques.
Young said, “It’s important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That’s why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long- term improvement.”
Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000- hour rule in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, suggesting that proficiency in any field requires about 10,000 hours of practice. Yet Anders Ericsson, whose research was a big inspiration for this concept, disagreed. He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback (反馈) about your performance. He stressed that learning from outcomes through corrective feedback is essential for developing true proficiency, otherwise you just spend time getting fluency and confidence.
Getting high- quality feedback will depend on how you ask for it. Simply asking someone “What do you think?” is not enough. “There’s just no way in our social network that someone could give you really honest feedback and not cause harm to the relationship,” Young says. Instead, he suggests asking, “It you were going to make this better, what would you do?” By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns.
32. What idea does Scott Young put forward in his book?
A. High scores need consistent practice.
B. Fluency comes from regular practice.
C. Right skills don’t guarantee success.
D. Practice may not ensure excellence.
33. Why did Young mention piano teachers and tennis coaches in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce a new idea.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To illustrate a point.
D. To confirm a guess
34. What does Anders Ericsson advocate?
A. Practicing under effective guidance.
B. Increasing the frequency of practice.
C. Enhancing the fluency of performance.
D. Getting confident from positive feedback.
35. What is a better way to ask for feedback in Young’s opinion?
A. Turning to strangers for help.
B. Not expecting honest response.
C. Asking for ways of improving.
D. Preparing for any judgment.
D 33. C 34. A 35. C
根据第一段“As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. While it may sound like good advice, it’s not the best or fastest path because practice can only get you so far, says Scott Young, author of Get Better at Anything: 12 Maxims for Mastery. (俗话说,熟能生巧。《在任何事情上都做得更好:精通的12条格言》一书的作者斯科特·杨说,虽然这听起来像是好建议,但这并不是最好或最快的方法,因为练习只能让你走到这一步。)”和“Practice is not a cure-all. (练习并非万能药。)”可知Scott Young在其书中提出的想法是练习可能不能保证卓越。故选D项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“It’s important to do the correct technique from the beginning. That’s why piano teachers and tennis coaches prefer to train someone who has had no experience rather than someone who has had a lot of experience. By starting with the correct techniques, beginners can grasp skills more quickly. Without established habits to break, they are more likely to build a strong base for long-term improvement.
根据第四段的“He argued for the idea of deliberate practice, which was not just practice but practice under the guidance with immediate feedback about your performance. (他主张有意图的练习,这种练习不仅仅是练习,而是在指导下的练习,并且立即得到关于你表现的反馈。)”可知Anders Ericsson提倡的是在有效指导下的练习。故选A项。
根据最后一段的“Instead, he suggests asking, ‘If you were going to make this better, what would you do?’ By asking how to improve it, we shift the focus from judgment to practical steps for addressing any concerns. (相反,他建议问,“如果你要让这变得更好,你会怎么做?”通过询问如何改进,我们将注意力从评判转移到解决任何问题的实际步骤上。)”可知,在Young看来,更好的寻求反馈的方式是询问改进的方法。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Which is more beneficial to English learning, paper or electronic dictionaries? ____36____ Instead of taking sides blindly, learners should apply them properly based on different learning stages and practical needs.
Paper dictionaries feature exploratory learning. When turning pages, you will unavoidably encounter new words, phrases and typical sentences. ____37____ They also help deepen memory, as paper layout and physical use strengthen long-term word recall. Besides, they offer complete collocation and style information without digital distractions.
____38____ They allow instant word lookup without breaking your reading train of thought. Most are equipped with audio pronunciation, personalized word lists and spaced repetition systems to facilitate efficient vocabulary review. Top-grade ones are even connected to massive language corpora (语料库), revealing how certain words are employed in real-life contexts.
Wise use of dictionaries lies in matching tools with learning tasks. For primary school students, paper dictionaries serve as a good helper to develop basic dictionary-searching skills. ____39____ Senior high school learners may rely mainly on electronic dictionaries for efficiency, while keeping a paper one at hand to check confusing word usages in depth. College students can combine both, with electronic tools for quick inquiry and paper ones for accurate writing.
Some universal rules should be followed to make the most of dictionaries: try to guess word meanings before looking them up; turn to English explanations rather than Chinese versions; attach greater importance to example sentences than simple definitions. By sticking to these good habits, you can achieve a perfect balance between depth and efficiency. ____40____ All in all, dictionaries are merely learning tools. The ultimate goal is to cultivate independent thinking and the ability to use words flexibly in diverse contexts.
A. But they have obvious drawbacks as well.
B. Such a heated debate has persisted for years.
C. Electronic dictionaries represent efficient learning.
D. This unintended exposure boosts vocabulary expansion.
E. Daily reading is the ideal occasion for us to consult dictionaries.
F. Also, you’d better review newly learned words at regular intervals.
G. Middle school students can use both fully for respective learning purposes.
B 37. D 38. C 39. G 40. F

The intimacy between man and nature与become是主动关系,此处应用现在分词becoming作伴随状语。

Dear fellow students,
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dear fellow students.
I’m Li Hua, chairman of the Students’ Union. I’m writing to advocate all the students to reduce the time of using social media on behalf of the Students Union of our school.
Recent years have witnessed the high development of science and technology, bringing great convenience to our daily communication. However, it is not uncommon that quite a few students attach too much importance to their “virtual” friends on social media, influencing their relationship with friends in real life. Worse still, social media has occupied too much of their spare time, even their study time, doing harm to their academic results.
Please be aware of the problem. Let’s use social media properly and limit our time on it.
Students’ Union

During my high school years, I always found mathematics a difficult subject. Mathematics problems such as numbers and equations seemed like puzzles I could never solve. I often stayed behind after class to ask my math teacher, Mrs Johnson, for help. Despite her reputation for being very strict, she was incredibly dedicated to helping her students make progress.
One afternoon, Mrs Johnson suggested I join the school math club. I laughed at the suggestion, thinking it was somewhat absurd. How could I, who barely understood basic algebra, possibly benefit from being in a club filled with math enthusiasts? Yet, she was serious. She believed that being surrounded by others who were passionate about math might activate a similar passion in me, and then improve my performance in the subject.
Reluctantly, I attended my first math club meeting. It was intimidating at first, but the club members were welcome, and the activities were surprisingly engaging. We tackled mathematical puzzles, helped each other with homework, and even participated in friendly competitions. Mrs Johnson often stayed late to help us work through particularly tough problems, and she always encouraged us to think critically and creatively.
As time progressed, I found myself looking forward to those Wednesday afternoon math club meetings. My understanding of math concepts deepened, and I began to enjoy the challenge of solving complex mathematics problems. My grades started to improve, slowly at first, then more consistently. More importantly, I was losing my fear of math. It was no longer a subject to endure but a challenge to conquer. Mrs Johnson’s faith in me had not only helped my academic skills but had also given me a new confidence in my ability to learn.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Several months later, everyone could see the significant progress I had made, not just in my grades, but in my entire approach to learning mathematics.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At the end of the school year, during the last meeting of the math club, Mrs Johnson made a special announcement.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Several months later, everyone could see the significant progress I had made, not just in my grades, but in my entire approach to learning mathematics. I was actively participating in class, solving complex equations that I had seen unable to understand before. The fear that had clouded my perception of math was replaced by a genuine excitement for every new topic we covered. I even began to stay after our regular sessions to discuss advanced problems with Mrs Johnson, seeking out challenges that would have been too much for me to handle before.
At the end of the school year, during the last meeting of the math club, Mrs Johnson made a special announcement. As she called me to the front of the room, she handed me a certificate for “Most Outstanding Contribution”. The room erupted in applause. She praised me for sticking with my dream and for changing into not only a great math student but also someone who encourages others. Her acknowledgment confirmed my newfound passion and dedication to a subject that once seemed unconquerable, underscoring an incredible year of academic and personal growth.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
