The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, is remembered for the many things he did during his rule.
Between 221 and 210 BC, he began to build the Great Wall. He built a large system of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency(货币), and a set of measurements(度量衡). The emperor also ordered the construction(建造) of a huge army of life-sized terracotta(陶器) soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.
Today, the soldiers in Xi’an’s Terracotta Museum are light brown, but they weren’t always this colour. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colours did not last to the present. Before their discovery, the clay soldiers were protected by being underground. When they were dug up, however, the air caused the coating under the paint to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.
New techniques are now starting to reveal(揭示) the army’s true colours. Scientists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese researchers have developed a special kind of water to help keep the soldiers’ colours. After they find a soldier, scientists spread the water over it. They then cover it in plastic.
Scientists are also finding colours in the dirt around Xi’an’s terracotta warriors. “It’s important not to move the dirt, so the colours won’t be lost. We are treating the earth as an art piece,” says Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. According to Rong, the next challenge is to find a way to restore(修复) the colours to the army. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full colour.
根据语篇内容,选择最佳选项。
1.Why did Qin Shi Huang order the construction of terracotta soldiers?
A.To make a new art museum.
B.To show his great painting skills.
C.To protect his tomb after he died.
2.Why are the soldiers in Xi’an’s Terracotta Museum today light brown?
A.Because they are too old.
B.Because their paint fell off.
C.Because they lost their time.
3.What do scientists use to protect the colours on newly found soldiers?
A.More dirt and water. B.Cold air and weak light. C.A special kind of water and plastic.
4.Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree with?
A.We should try to repaint the army’s real colours.
B.The soldiers should be left the way they were found.
C.Artists are able to paint the soldiers the colours they want.
5.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The secrets in Qin Shi Huang’s tomb.
B.The real colours of the terracotta soldiers.
C.The stories behind the terracotta soldiers.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.B

① The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It was built thousands of years ago to protect ancient China from enemies. Yet, even today, this great building holds many mysteries that scientists and historians are still trying to understand.
② One of the biggest mysteries is how the ancient Chinese built the wall without modern machines. The longest section, the Wall of the Qin Dynasty, is made of millions of stone blocks. How did people move such heavy stones without machines? Some experts believe the workers used large ramps made of sand and mud to push the stones into place. But no one knows for sure.
③ Another question is about the design of the Great Wall. It is perfectly shaped and aligned with the mountains. For example, the watchtowers are placed at strategic points to warn of enemies. How did the ancient Chinese do all this successfully without compasses or computers? This remains a mystery.
④ There are also mysteries inside the wall. Hidden rooms and long passageways have been discovered, but scientists are still not sure what some of them were used for. They have found beautiful paintings and writings on the walls, which tell stories about the past. However, many of these messages have not been fully understood.

重难语篇练习
The Flying Horse of Gansu
In the Gansu Provincial Museum in Lanzhou, there stands a world-famous bronze horse. It is known as the “Bronze Galloping Horse (铜奔马)” or “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow (马踏飞燕)”. Discovered in 1969 in Wuwei, Gansu, this 2,000-year-old treasure has become a symbol of Chinese tourism.
The horse is not very large—only 34.5 centimeters tall and 45 centimeters long. But its artistic value is priceless. It shows a horse running at full speed, with its tail flying in the wind. Three of its hooves (蹄) are lifted in the air, while the fourth hoof touches a flying swallow. The artist’s great skill is shown in how the horse keeps perfect balance on just one small point—the swallow. And the swallow looks up in surprise, as if it cannot believe a horse could run so fast.
For many years, experts have studied why this Eastern Han Dynasty artwork is so special. Some believe it shows that ancient Chinese artists had a deep understanding of balance and movement. Others think it shows the importance of horses in ancient China. During the Han Dynasty, horses were necessary for military (军事的) use and played a key role in the ancient Silk Road trade. Wuwei was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road, so it is not surprising that such a beautiful bronze horse was found there.
Today, the Flying Horse serves as a cultural ambassador (大使) for China. It has traveled to many countries. However, the original bronze horse ________ leaves the museum in Lanzhou because it is too valuable and fragile (易碎的). Instead, good copies are sent to exhibitions (展览会) abroad, so that people around the world can still enjoy this great artwork and learn about Gansu’s rich history.

Donglan Bronze Drum Museum is China’s first private bronze (青铜) drum museum. It is in Guangxi, and its owner is Chen Yaoling.
Chen was a traditional Chinese medicine doctor who treated local farmers. One day in 1974, he treated a woman. The woman’s family offered him a cow to show thanks, but Chen refused, saying it was too expensive. Finally, the family gave him an old bronze drum. That became the first piece of Chen’s bronze drum collection. Since then, he has collected over 100 bronze drums.
Now, Chen has the largest private collection of Zhuang bronze drums. The history of bronze drums in Guangxi dates back to 2,000 years. At present, there are just over 2,000 bronze drums of the Zhuang people in museums around the world. So his collection is valuable.
The bronze drum has been handed down from generation to generation, but few people know its history. Chen has been trying to let more people know the stories of each bronze drum he collected.
Ten years ago, he borrowed about 5 million yuan to build a museum to promote (推广) this cultural treasure of the Zhuang people. The museum now shows over 100 bronze drums in different halls according to what people used them for in the past.

⑤ Even after hundreds of years of study, the Great Wall still keeps its secrets. They show us how clever and hard-working the ancient Chinese were. Every new discovery helps us learn more about this amazing culture, but there is still much we do not know.

① What comes to mind when you think of archaeologists (考古学家)? Are they as cool as the characters in some movies? Let’s discover the world of archaeologists.
② Find places. Historical treasures are often hidden underground. To find the proper place for digging, archaeologists do surveys to search for signs of ancient sites (遗址). These signs may be things like broken pieces of ancient tools. It’s hard work. They have to walk across the field in all kinds of weather. Besides, it requires much experience and professional (专业的) knowledge to tell an ordinary rock from a stone tool.
③ Do research. Archaeologists spend a lot of time in the lab studying the discoveries. Luckily, they are now closer to answering those mysteries (奥秘) than ever with the help of modern technology. The first thing they need to do is to find out the age of the things discovered. They also check bones of humans or animals to find out the cause of their death and what they ate during their lifetime.
④ Repair and clean. Ancient objects can be damaged (损坏) in different ways. For example, bowls and cups are often in pieces, and metal tools are usually covered with rust (铁锈) . Before repairing these objects, archaeologists use X-rays to look for damage. If the rust is harmful, they need to make it disappear and repair the object with something special. In this process (工序), they have to be very patient and careful so as not to damage the value of the object.
⑤ Though the job can be very tiring or requires working long hours in the lab, most archaeologists are proud of their work. It’s their hard work that has brought the lost treasures back to life.
