It was a cold and cloudy afternoon at the end of winter. I put on my hockey pads, picked up my bag and ran towards the car. My heart was racing because I was getting ready to try out for the Boston Junior Team.
"Dad," as we drove, I said, "I'm really nervous. Will I make it?"
"You'll do fine, Emily," he said to me comfortingly. "I know what kind of player you are. No matter what, give your all."
When I arrived at the rink(冰场), I greeted some friends who were also trying out. I tied my skates and carefully stepped out onto the ice. After a while, we were divided into two teams, and the match started. I tried to stay focused but still felt nervous. I messed up a few times. Sometimes I passed too early, took a bad shot, or didn't make a play I probably should have. I felt like my skates had minds of their own, but I remembered what my dad said: I should give my all. I kept trying to make the best play possible. My dad's words pushed me to keep going.
After the match, some players were pleased, while others seemed to be in the same situation as me, feeling like their playing was awful. I got home and told my parents that I didn't think I would make the team, and I went to sleep without dinner.
As I was eating breakfast the next morning, my mother, to my surprise, walked into the kitchen with a wide smile on her face.
"The coach just emailed me. You've made it!" she said excitedly.
I was so relieved(如释重负)and shocked at the same time. I got up and hugged her, then read the email for myself, still unable to believe it was true.
That day, I realized that I may not be the most talented person there, but if I try my hardest, I can do anything.
24.How did the writer feel before the match started?
A.Confident. B.Excited. C.Nervous. D.Angry.
25.During the match, Emily ______.
A.made some mistakes B.talked with her father again
C.asked her coach for help D.broke her skates by accident
26.What can we learn about Emily's parents?
A.They doubted her ability. B.They paid little attention to her match.
C.They pushed her too hard. D.They encouraged her in their own ways.
27.From her experience, Emily learned about ______.
A.the value of talent B.the power of putting in full effort
C.the strength of teamwork D.the importance of planning ahead

What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning — what is called "wakeful rest". A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give "wakeful rest" a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school's website explains that "a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well". It also says, "Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information."
The National Sleep Foundation suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some "wakeful rest" after a study. Then try to get a good night's sleep. That's it — a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
28.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The importance of sleep. B.The good ways to get a rest.
C.The reason for having a rest. D.The types of resting activities.
29.Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying?
A.Reading a newspaper. B.Playing a video game.
C.Sitting there doing nothing. D.Having a nice sleep at night.
30.How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?
A.Less than 7 hours. B.Just 7 hours.
C.No more than 9 hours. D.Around 9 hours.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Low-cost Tips on Working B.Good Things to Do After Your Study
C.Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep? D.How Long Should We Rest After Learning?

The first time I heard about my classmates engaging with social media was in the fourth grade. A lot of my friends and classmates had excitedly jumped onto platforms like Instagram at such a young age. On the other hand, I hesitated. I only knew the basics, but was foreign to some words on social media.
All throughout middle school, I stuck with the same thinking. And now, as a freshman in college, I am looking back and wondering why I, unlike my classmates, have never been naturally interested in social media.
Scanning Instagram, you ought to find dozens of pictures of people in beautiful countries, taking part in exciting activities, and spending time with friends and family, among many other things. The thought of doing this has never related to me. I respect and understand those who do believe using social media allows them to express themselves and share aspects of their lives with others. However, I have never had any interest in doing the same. In my eyes, when not shared with others, family gatherings and friend get-togethers are just as meaningful, if not more so.
Most people have experienced feeling insecure and unconfident on social media. Images that are changed represent unrealistic beauty standards that can only be obtained through dangerous ways. Even without using social media, I knew that using apps like Instagram and Facebook would make me embarrassed about all the aspects that make me a unique individual. I've never wanted to look at a post on social media and immediately compare myself and my life.
I constantly observe my classmates getting easily distracted by social media. While trying to complete their homework, they have a powerful urge to open up Instagram or Facebook to see if there are any new messages. With homework and after-class activities consuming the majority of my day, I cannot wait to finish every task on my to-do list, so I can finally spend time with my family or have some time for myself to relax from my busy day.
32.What can we learn about the writer in middle school?
A.She often shared photos on Instagram. B.She was not naturally interested in social media. C.She quarreled with classmates over apps. D.She knew all the popular words online.
33.In the writer's eyes, family gatherings and friend get-togethers not shared online are ______.
A.meaningless B.less meaningful
C.as meaningful as, or even more meaningful D.only for young people
34.Why does the writer avoid using apps like Instagram and Facebook?
A.They cost too much money.
B.They are too difficult to use.
C.They may make her feel insecure about her uniqueness.
D.Her parents don't allow her to use them.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Become Popular on Social Media B.Why I Choose to Stay Away from Social Media C.The Danger of Taking Photos D.Social Media: A Bridge to Friendship

Personal Development For Teens
Teenagers may face many challenges unique to them. Below are some steps to help you evolve and be a better person in your teens.
Learn a new skill
Sometimes, a side-skill you have gained along the way turns out the very thing that creates an opportunity for success. 36 You shouldn't be forced to determine your future based on your grades and choices in high school, so learning new skills will definitely come in handy later.
Try to socialize more
37 Wherever you go and whatever you do, the ability to blend in and communicate with others can save you in tough times. Socializing, making friends, and forming healthy relationships can help you learn things you could never find out on your own.
Have a better lifestyle
Your lifestyle forms your character, and the way you live defines who you are. 38 On the other hand, having an unhealthy lifestyle may disturb you, put you under stress, and eventually harm you in the most unbelievable ways.
Take care of your health
Without health, it is almost impossible to enjoy life to its fullest. Money, grades, or events are replaceable; your health is not. And while it is very important to maintain good physical health, we cannot forget about our mental health. 39
Embrace positivity
Try to avoid people who ruin everything with negativity and befriend those who give you positive vibes(感应). 40 How can you improve yourself if your surroundings keep telling you that changing for the better is useless? Negative people give up quickly because they can never see the light in the darkness.
Every teenager should be taught and reminded of ways to improve themselves so that they can see a clearer picture of their future.
A.Grasping new skills is an easy job.
B.You need people who make you feel good about life.
C.Force yourself to socialize — even if you don't want to.
D.Proper communication is crucial if you want to be a better person.
E.Our mind is just as important, and we should give it the same amount of attention.
F.Also, when you are in your teens, you hardly know what you want to do with your life.
G.When you're at peace with how you live your days, you can focus on improving yourself.

Should you listen to music when you work?
Do you like to listen to music when you work? Ask this question at a party, and you'll probably get 41 responses. Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it distracting(分散注意力的)and cannot work 42 with music playing in the background. Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these viewpoints can be true. It just 43 on what sort of work you're doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They included a(n) 44 task — searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter "a" and a more difficult task memorizing word pairs and 45 each word to its partner. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, 46 others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instruments being played.
Several key findings 47 from our study. We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task. However, participants who listened to 48 music performed best on the easy task. On the contrary, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn't listen to any music.
How should we 49 these findings? We suggest that people have limited mental resources from which both 50 and tasks can draw. We can become 51 and our minds may wander when these resources are not fully used. But we also can become over-excited and 52 when these resources are used up. Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less 53 during easier tasks, there is a greater risk of drifting off. Music might give us the extra 54 we need to overcome the monotony(单调). However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our resources. Listening to music can become too much. So best 55 should appear when we strike a "sweet spot," which may depend on the type of music and the type of task.

C.The reason for having a rest. D.The types of resting activities.
【答案】C
【解析】主旨大意题。第三段说明“学习后停止活动,大脑得以休息”这一基本原理,即解释学习后要休息的原因。故选C。
29.Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying?

C.Sitting there doing nothing. D.Having a nice sleep at night.
【答案】C
【解析】细节理解题。“wakeful rest”即安静地坐五到十分钟、不看手机不玩游戏,故学习后推荐的活动是“坐在那里什么都不做”。故选C。
30.How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?
A.Less than 7 hours. B.Just 7 hours.
C.No more than 9 hours. D.Around 9 hours.
【答案】D
【解析】推理判断题。倒数第二段:成年人每天需 7 至 9 小时睡眠,青少年“may need a little bit more”,故约 9 小时。故选D。
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Low-cost Tips on Working B.Good Things to Do After Your Study
C.Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep? D.How Long Should We Rest After Learning?
【答案】B

D
【答案】B
【解析】细节理解题。根据第一、二段“I stuck with the same thinking... have never been naturally interested in social media”可知,作者对社交媒体一直没有天然的兴趣。故选B。
33.In the writer's eyes, family gatherings and friend get-togethers not shared online are ______.
A.meaningless B.less meaningful
C.as meaningful as, or even more meaningful D.only for young people
【答案】C
【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段“when not shared with others, family gatherings and friend get-togethers are just as meaningful, if not more so”可知,作者认为不上网分享的家庭聚会同样有意义,甚至更有意义。故选C。
34.Why does the writer avoid using apps like Instagram and Facebook?
A.They cost too much money. B.They are too difficult to use.
C.They may make her feel insecure about her uniqueness. D.Her parents don't allow her to use them.
【答案】C
【解析】细节理解题。根据第四段“would make me embarrassed about all the aspects that make me a unique individual”可知,作者担心社交媒体让她对自己与众不同之处感到不安。故选C。
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Become Popular on Social Media B.Why I Choose to Stay Away from Social Media C.The Danger of Taking Photos D.Social Media: A Bridge to Friendship
【答案】B
【解析】主旨大意题。全文解释作者远离社交媒体的三个理由:不感兴趣、避免不安全感和分心。故选B。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
【题源】题庄 33025984·上海市奉贤区重点中学2023-2024学年高一(上)11月期中

【参考范文】
Dear Jack,
I'm writing to share with you my thoughts on how to arrange our academic and extracurricular activities under the policy of "double-lightening the burden".
With less homework, I make a flexible study plan and finish most of my schoolwork efficiently at school, leaving enough time for after-class activities. In my spare time, I play basketball with friends, read in the library and volunteer in the community at weekends, which keeps me energetic and happy.
In my view, the policy offers us more freedom to develop our own interests, but it also requires stronger self-discipline. Only by balancing study and hobbies can we grow into well-rounded teenagers. (98 words)
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

M: Don't panic. Maybe you left it in the library. Let's go and check.
【Text 2】
W: Dad, can I stay at Lucy's home tonight? We're working on a school project together.

【Text 4】
W: Jack, why are you shooting hoops instead of doing your homework?

【Text 5】

W: I'd love to, but I have to pick up my little brother from school that day.
M: What a pity! I'll share the notes with you later.
【Text 6】
W: Tom, come here. We need to talk. You've been playing computer games for two hours.
M: But Mom, it's Saturday! I finished all my homework this afternoon.
W: I know, but you've been sitting in front of the screen for too long. Your eyes...
M: Mom, I understand your concern. How about this? I'll set a time limit — one hour a day on weekends, and stop right away when the timer rings.
W: That sounds fair. As long as your grades stay good, I won't worry too much.
M: Deal! See, we can always work things out by talking calmly.
【Text 7】
M: Hi, Jenny! You look excited today.
W: My family is going to rent a small house by the lake this weekend. My grandparents will come along.

W: Then come on Sunday morning. We'll stay till Sunday evening.
M: Perfect! I'll be there.
【Text 8】
W: Mr. Smith, may I ask you something? I feel so anxious about the coming exams that I can't fall asleep at night.
M: That's quite normal among students, Linda. In fact, a little stress can push you to work better.
W: But what if I keep worrying about it?
M: Why not take regular exercise, like jogging after school? It can help calm you down. And don't forget to go to bed early tonight.
W: I see. Thank you very much, Mr. Smith.
M: My pleasure. Good luck with your exams.

M: Do you always see eye to eye with them?
W: Not always. Sometimes we argue about my clothes or my pocket money, but we never stay angry for long.

W: Be honest and keep calm. Most problems get worse when we shout.
M: Wise words! Thank you, Amy.
【Text 10】

Besides, each class is asked to design a poster about family love, and the top three posters will be displayed on the school website. Students who want to take part in the speech contest on "Growing Up with My Parents" should sign up at the Student Union office before this Friday. Remember, communication is the bridge to understanding. That's all. Thank you.
