五、阅读理解
(一)
The Riverside Community Kitchen has been serving free lunches for eleven years. It was started by a woman named Ouyang, who at the time was a school cook and had no money of her own to give.
Her idea was simple. Every evening, she asked three local restaurants for the vegetables they would otherwise throw away. Most agreed, partly because it saved them the cost of rubbish collection. The vegetables were not bad; they were simply the wrong shape, or slightly too old for a restaurant menu.
The first month, Ouyang cooked for nine people. Now the kitchen serves two hundred meals a day, and it is run entirely by volunteers. What has surprised visitors most is who eats there. It is not only the very poor. Among the regulars are a retired engineer, several students, and a young father who comes after his night shift because it is the only hot meal he has time to eat.
Ouyang refuses to describe the kitchen as a charity. 'We are not giving anything away,' she says. 'We are stopping good food from being wasted, and we are all eating together. Nobody in this room is above anybody else.'

C. She does not like the volunteers.
D. She wants money from the government.
(二)
My grandfather planted trees. He was a farmer, not an environmentalist, and he had no grand plan. He simply believed that a person should leave the land better than they found it.
He planted trees for forty years: on roadsides, along the edges of fields, behind the school, on land nobody wanted. Some of them died. Some were eaten by goats. He planted more anyway. When I asked him why he bothered when so many failed, he said something I did not understand at the time: 'The trees are not for me.'
He died eleven years ago. Last spring, I went back to the village for the first time in a decade, and I did not recognise it. The school was surrounded by tall trees. The road was shaded. There was a small forest behind the fields where, as a boy, I had looked at nothing but stones.
A young woman stopped me on the road and asked whether I was the grandson of the tree man. She told me that she now teaches in the village school, and that the children call the trees 'Grandfather's trees'. I understood then what he had meant. The trees were never for him. They were for her, and for the children who would sit under them long after all of us are gone.
6.What did the writer's grandfather do for forty years?
A. He taught in a village school.
B. He planted trees in many places.
C. He kept goats and sheep.
D. He worked as an environmentalist.
7.What did he say when some trees died?
A. He decided to stop planting.
B. The trees were not for him.

D. He needed more money.
8.What did the writer find on his return?
A. The village was full of trees he did not remember.
B. The village had been abandoned.
C. The school had closed.
D. The fields had become a factory.
9.What do the village children call the trees?
A. The old forest.
B. The farmer's trees.
C. Grandfather's trees.
D. The school trees.
10.What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. The writer will cut down the trees.
B. The village school will close.
C. The grandfather had a grand plan all along.
D. The grandfather's work lives on for future generations.
