Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is better than existing ones, as stated in the press release.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire figures, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the model was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24. What inspired Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A. Her experience of a destructive fire. B. Her interest in computer programming.
C. Her desire to win the science award. D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
25. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to operate.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
26. What can we know about Shanya from the text?
A. She is determined and creative. B. Her device is cheaper than previous ones.
C. Her invention is widely used now. D. She invented the device just for the award.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A fire detection system is upgraded. B. A middle schooler shines in TFSJIC.
C. The TFSJIC ends with glory and promise. D. Shanya Gill inspires the disadvantaged youth.

On paper, hydrogen (氢气) looks like a dream fuel. In practice, things are harder. Storing meaningful quantities of hydrogen gas requires compressing (压缩) it several hundred times. Turning it into a liquid state is another option, but one that requires cooling the stuff to −253℃. Either process requires rugged tanks. Over time, hydrogen gas can pass slowly into metals, weakening them and potentially causing damage. Tanks must be built from special materials designed to avoid this breakdown.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute led by Marcus Vogt think that supplying hydrogen in paste form (糊状) offers a way around some of its limitations. They have been experimenting with a chemical compound (化合物) that can be pumped into a container and then persuaded to give off its hydrogen on demand.
Their invention, which they nickname “powerpaste”, looks like toothpaste. Its main component is magnesium hydride, a compound that when introduced to water, reacts with it to form hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide. The escaped hydrogen can then be redirected into a fuel container, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to generate electric power. The magnesium hydroxide waste is emptied from the reactor automatically.
Dr Vogt’s invention offers several advantages over batteries, petrol and more traditional ways of dealing with hydrogen. One is that it can store more energy per litre and per kilogram than batteries or petrol. A second is the simplicity of refilling, which is simply a matter of replacing an empty container of paste with a full one, and topping up the water, which is stored in a separate tank. A third advantage is that, unlike a battery, the paste does not gradually lose its stored energy if it is left on the shelf. Moreover, the paste itself is harmless, and so are the reaction’s by-products.
But there are still more to work through. Magnesium hydride reacts only slowly with water. To address this, Dr Vogt and his team have found a chemical additive that greatly speeds up the reaction. They have also found a way to ensure that the reaction can be controlled to supply only as much hydrogen as is needed at any given moment.
28. Which of the following best explains “rugged” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. small B. breakable C. tough D. huge
29. What can we know about the invention according to paragraph 3?
A. Water and electricity are necessary in the process.
B. Several chemical reactions occur in the same tank.
C. The remaining waste needs removing with extra help.
D. Magnesium hydride reacts with water to produce hydrogen.
30. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By quoting sayings. B. By drawing comparisons.
C. By providing examples. D. By explaining a theory.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. “Toothpaste” in Your Tank B. Hydrogen: Fuel of Fantasy
C. The Green Fuel of Tomorrow D. Paste That Powers the World
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Positive teacher-student interaction plays a vital role in school life. A respectful and close relationship can improve students’ study motivation and mental state. 32 Here are several ideas for students to develop healthy get-along with their teachers.
First, come to class prepared and show sincere respect. Respect is not limited to keeping silent in class. 33 Finishing required tasks on time and coming with questions show you value the teacher’s effort and the course itself.
34 Many students hesitate to turn to teachers when confused. They worry that asking questions will leave a silly impression. In fact, most teachers welcome active questions. Raising proper doubts helps teachers know where students struggle, and it promotes two-way communication.
Meanwhile, learn to view teachers as ordinary human beings rather than perfect authority figures. Teachers may also feel tired or make small mistakes. 35 If you disagree with a teacher’s opinion, express your thoughts politely instead of being rude in public.
Last but not least, understand boundaries. Teachers offer guidance and knowledge, yet they cannot solve every personal trouble for you. 36 Share academic puzzles openly, but do not overburden teachers with all your private emotional problems.
A. Do not fear raising reasonable questions in class.
B. It also includes your attitude towards learning itself.
C. Therefore students should argue with teachers whenever possible.
D. However, such close connections do not happen naturally without effort.
E. You should keep all your thoughts inside and never speak out.
F. Accept their imperfection and treat them with politeness.
G. Some personal issues need to be dealt with by yourself or your family.

Last Sunday, Grandpa proudly showed me his new tablet. At 73, he’s not just reading the news — he’s taking an online course in digital photography. Watching his eyes light up as he looked over his latest photos, I couldn’t help but 37 how far he’s come.
It’s hard to believe that just two years ago, Grandpa often felt 38 about technology, unsure how to 39 when we shared photos or messages online. “I’m too 40 for this,” he would say, believing that learning 41 skills was no longer meant for him. Seeing his disappointment, I knew we needed a(n) 42 .
We started small, spending Sunday afternoons going through 43 tablet operations. Grandpa complained that everything seemed too 44 , but his engineering background soon helped him 45 the logic behind the technology. He made mistakes at first, yet instead of giving up, he laughed at himself and tried again. That 46 attitude made all the difference.
By now, Grandpa has 47 far more than what we expected. He has 48 designed a simple website to show his woodworking and 49 his own smart home system to manage daily life. Watching Grandpa learn technology has taught me something 50 about aging. It’s not about keeping up with the young, but about finding your own way and purpose. He may never be the fastest learner, but he’s connected, active, and 51 to learn every day.

Ten-year-old Tom always felt lonely. His parents were always occupied with work. They left home early in the morning and came back late at night. Tom often ate dinner alone and went to bed without a goodnight kiss. For him, there were no family games, no city tours, no weekend outings.
One day, Tom’s parents brought home a gift — a smart watch. “This watch has a special friend inside,” Mom said with a smile. “Her name is Ling. She can talk to you, answer your questions, and even tell you stories.” A wave of expectation swept over Tom as he put on the watch and pressed the button. A gentle voice came out, “Hello, Tom! I’m Ling. Nice to meet you!” Tom’s eyes lit up. He had never received such an interesting gift before.
From that day on, Ling became Tom’s closest companion. Every morning, Ling would say, “Good morning, Tom! Have a great day at school!” Whenever Tom encountered difficulties with his homework, Ling would patiently provide thorough explanations. After Tom got into bed, Ling would tell his favorite tales about brave knights and magical lands. Sometimes, when Tom felt scared of the dark, Ling would sing softly to comfort him. To Tom, Ling was more than a voice; she was family.
His parents noticed Tom’s change. “See? Our little boy seems much happier now,” Dad said one evening. Mom agreed, “The watch really helps,” relieved. They thought their son was no longer lonely. What they didn’t know was that sometimes, after Ling had finished her stories, Tom would lie awake in the darkness, listening to the silence that filled the room. He loved Ling, but he couldn’t help thinking: if only Mom and Dad were here.
One afternoon after school, Tom caught his foot and fell on the way home. The watch hit a rock with a loud crack. When Tom picked it up, the screen was dark. He pressed the button again and again, but nothing appeared. “Ling? Ling, are you there?” he called desperately. There was no reply.
