What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased? This ability would allow us to witness historic wonders, change decisions and see people from the past. We could right wrongs and stop wars from starting. The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true. The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “spacetime”. Einstein said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension. Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on the earth or in space. The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward. Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? The most important thing is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder. 4. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph? A. To explain time and space are connected. B. To show people’s interest in time travel. C. To draw readers’ attention to time travel. D. To make people believe time travel is possible. 5. Which of the following statements could Einstein agree with? A. Time travel is possible in the future. B. People can’t move faster than light. C. Time travel is against scientific rules. D. Spacetime is not a real thing in theory. 6. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about? A. The first science fiction story. B. Some tools used in time travel. C. Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer. D. Different works about time travel. 7. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel? A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful. C Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein’s jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags. Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts(收银台). The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume. Among the bag makers’ argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic. Environmentalists don’t dispute(质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years. 8. What has Steven Stein been hired to do? A. Help increase grocery sales. B. Recycle the waste material. C. Stop things falling off trucks. D. Argue for the use of plastic bags. 9. What does the word “headwinds” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Bans on plastic bags. B. Effects of city development. C. Headaches caused by garbage. D. Plastic bags hung in trees. 10. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers? A. They are quite expensive. B. Replacing them can be difficult. C. They are less strong than plastic bags. D. Producing them requires more energy. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Plastic, Paper or Neither B. Industry, Pollution and Environment C. Recycle or Throw Away D. Garbage Collection and Waste Control D The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women. Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said : "These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people's cardiovascular (心血管的)fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia. " For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts. A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category; and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems. These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness. "However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important. " She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were form Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups. 12. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Positive effects of doing exercises. B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged. C. Experimental studies on diseases. D. Advantages of sporty woman over man 13. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise? A. To predict their maximum heart rate. B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity C. To change their habits of working out D. To detect their potential health problems 14. What do we know about Dr Horder's study? A. It aimed to find a cure for dementia. B. Data collection was a lengthy process. C. Some participants withdrew from it. D. The results were far from satisfactory. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia D. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness Writing an essay is a difficult process for most people. However, the process can be made easier if you learn to practice three simple techniques. ___16___ When you are first trying to think of ideas for an essay, put your pen to your paper and write nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes without letting your pen leave the paper. Stay loose and free. ___17___ Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. Even though this technique won’t work for everyone, it helps many people get a good store of ideas to draw on. The next technique is to write your draft rapidly without worrying about being perfect. ___18___ Yet, by learning to live with imperfection, you will save yourself headaches and a wastepaper basket full of crumpled (弄皱) paper. Think of your first draft as a path cut out of the jungle—as part of an exploration, not as a complete highway. The third technique is to try printing out a triple-spaced (三倍行距) copy to allow space for revision. ___19___ As a result, these writers never get in the habit of crossing out chunks (大块) of their draft and writing revisions in the blank space. After you have revised your draft until it is too messy to work from anymore, you can enter your changes into your word processor. ___20___ The resulting blank space invites you to revise. A. Make sure your handwriting is neat. B. Let your pen follow the waves of thought. C. The second draft of the essay should be better. D. First of all, learn the technique of nonstop writing. E. Too many writers try to get their drafts right the first time. F. Many beginning writers don’t leave enough space to revise. G. Then you can print out a fresh draft, again setting your text on triple-space. One August afternoon, I sat in my kitchen staring at a glass vase that hadn’t seen daylight since my wedding. Very exhausted from the day but eager to get home to her husband and 7-year-old son, she jumped into her minivan and began the 20-minute drive without any delay. She had just returned from visiting her mother and had travelled the route so many times, so she practically drove on autopilot: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway. But fate had a cruel twist in the store — wham! Out of nowhere on that awful night of October 10, 2017, a car hit Esposito’s minivan, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the minivan, her mind a complete blank. Though slightly injured, she was mostly stunned by the violent impact and the sudden explosion of the airbags. Panic welled up immediately as she realized her dangerous situation, but the shock made her almost immobile. As it happened, Pete DiPinto, a 64-year-old volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, was getting ready for bed. He’d just closed his book when he heard a huge crashing sound. Without a second thought, he leaped out of bed, grabbed a flashlight, and, still in his pajamas, dashed out the door. “Any firefighter would have done what I did,” he later said in an interview. “We’re always on duty,” he added firmly, with a determined look in his eyes. The first car he came upon, 2,000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. After quickly checking that the driver was unharmed, he scanned the area and spotted Esposito’s minivan straddling the railroad tracks. Then, his blood ran cold as he heard the sound of bells signaling an oncoming train, and the faint glow of the train’s headlights was visible in the distance. DiPinto knew he had mere seconds to act. The train approaching rapidly, DiPinto had to act fast. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The story of DiPinto’s heroism spread like wildfire. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 秘密★启用前 【考试时间:12月16日8:00—10:00】 昆明市第三中学高2027届高二年级12月月考 英语试卷 注意事项: 1. 1. A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第一段“What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?”(如果我们有能力控制时间,而不是从过去到现在再到未来呢? 根据第五段中“Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel.”(爱因斯坦提出的两个想法导致了时间旅行可能性的理论)可知,爱因斯坦可能同意的观点是时光旅行在未来是可能的。故选A项。 根据倒数第二段“The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.”(第一部以这个主题为主题的科幻小说是爱德华·p·米切尔的《倒着走的钟》,出版于1881年。 根据最后一段“Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? The most important thing is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.”(时间旅行会发生吗? Garbage Collection and Waste Control 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段中one of Stein’s jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bags.和第二段中plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume. headwinds意为“逆风”,此处指塑料袋被禁用的现状,即Bans on plastic bags,故选A。 However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. 故选A。 D The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness 【答案】12. 16. D 17. B 18. E 19. F 20. After careful consideration, I’d like to vote for “Emotional Outlets” instead of “Futuristic Visions”. As high school students, we often face pressure from studies and relationships, but many of us struggle to find proper ways to release emotions. This topic is highly relevant for students, as it provides a platform to openly discuss emotions, stress management, and mental well-being. It would not only help improve our English expression but also create a supportive community where we can share experiences and coping strategies. This theme encourages empathy, self-reflection, and practical communication skills, making it both meaningful and engaging. I’m looking forward to the first episode! Yours, Li Hua 例文② Dear David, I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to share my thoughts on the proposed podcast themes. After careful consideration, I would like to recommend “Futuristic Visions” as the theme for our weekly English podcast. I believe this topic will greatly engage students because it encourages creativity and critical thinking about technological advancements, environmental solutions, and societal changes. It aligns with our generation’s interest in innovation and allows us to explore diverse perspectives. Additionally, discussing future trends can inspire practical language use, as it involves describing possibilities, expressing opinions, and debating ideas. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The train approaching rapidly, DiPinto had to act fast. Without the slightest hesitation, he dashed to the minivan, shouting “Stay calm! I’m here!” He tried to break the driver’s side window with a flashlight but failed. Glancing anxiously at the oncoming train, he rushed to the passenger side, struggling fiercely to open the door. Ultimately, he succeeded through his continuous efforts. Grabbing her arm, he pulled her out with all his might. As they stumbled away from the tracks, the train thundered past, missing them by inches. The story of DiPinto’s heroism spread like wildfire. Reporters flocked to interview him, and the community held a ceremony to honor him, but he humbly insisted, “Any firefighter would do the same.” Esposito, deeply grateful, visited him and called his rescue “a second chance at life”. Inspired by his bravery and selflessness, more locals volunteered for emergency services. His story shone as a beacon of hope, reminding all that ordinary people can perform extraordinary deeds in times of crisis. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①大喊:shout/yell/cry out ②抓住:grab/grasp ③拉:pull/drag 情绪类 ①不安地:anxiously/uneasily ②感激的:grateful/thankful/appreciative 【点睛】[高分句型1] Without the slightest hesitation, he dashed to the minivan, shouting “Stay calm!
