It applies vivid expressions, quote famous sayings and use impreratives to rationalize the important role of fun. ‹#› Part 1: Background Analysis - Student Analysis Who are they?Grade 7 Students Curious, energetic, and already full of their own unique ideas about what “fun” means in their lives. What do they know and love? • Rich personal experiences with fun activities & superficially grasp “all work, no play”. • Naturally drawn to relatable, authentic scenarios in lessons. Key Challenges •Cognitive: Sees fun as surface-level entertainment only. •Textual: Argumentative writing (thesis/evidence) is new territory. •Linguistic: Needs help understanding abstract proverbs. 1.7.2013 Understanding the learners is key. Our Grade 7 students are full of energy and personal experience with fun. However, they face challenges like thinking deeper about fun's value and understanding argumentative essays. The lesson is designed to guide them through these challenges and unlock their critical thinking potential. ‹#› Part 2: Learning Objectives 01 Learning & Understanding Identify the main argument and three supporting benefits of fun. Map the classic argumentative structure. 02 Applying & Practicing Through guided tasks and interaction with an AI agent, confidently retell the text’s core arguments and supporting details. 03 Transferring & Creating In groups, brainstorm additional benefits of fun and discuss balancing work/study and play in your own lives. 1.7.2013 Based on the above analysis, by the end of the lesson, students will not only understand and analyze the text but also apply what they've learned and innovate by connecting it to their own lives. These are the skills that will make them successful learners and thinkers. ‹#› Part 2: Key & Difficult Points Key Points 1. Content Mastery: Understand the three main benefits of fun presented in the text. 2. Structure Recognition: Identify the thesis, evidence, and structural elements of an argumentative essay. 3. Vocabulary Acquisition: Master key phrases and expressions related to the theme. Difficult Points 1. Analyzing Rhetoric:Guide students to see how examples, quotes, and research build a convincing case. 2. Critical Thinking:Encourage students to evaluate ideas and discuss to form their own opinions. 3. Personal Connection:Bridge the text to real life. 1.7.2013 Every adventure has its peaks and valleys. The key points are reaching the summit of understanding the text's content and structure. The challenging points involve analyzing how the argument is built, forming personal opinions, and applying the lesson to real life. ‹#› Part 3: Question Framework - Question Chain This carefully crafted sequence of questions guides students from curiosity to deep understanding and personal application. Pre-reading Prediction & Activation Spark curiosity and connect new content to prior knowledge. While-reading Comprehension & Analysis Dig into the text, understand meaning, and organize ideas. Post-reading Application & Synthesis Apply learning to new contexts and combine ideas. Summary Internalization Make the learning personal and retain the key takeaways. 1.7.2013 To guide our discovery, a carefully crafted question framework is applied. This "question chain" leads students through a process of prediction, comprehension, analysis, application, and finally, internalization. It ensures that every step of the lesson is purposeful and leads to deeper understanding. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 1: Stranded on an Island Purpose This icebreaker is designed to: • Activate students’ prior knowledge and stimulate their interest. • Spark immediate curiosity and engagement. • Decode the titile and practice prediction skills before diving into the text. Steps 1. The Scenario: Q: What about the fifth one? 2. The Prediction: Q1: What’s the meaning of “dull”? Q2: How do you understand the title? Q3: What may be the writer’s opinion about having fun? Evaluation Observe the students’ enthusiasm in participating in the discussion, and evaluate whether their predictions are reasonable and whether their language is clear and precise. 1.7.2013 Then comes the most important part of my design: learning activities. The activity can grasp students' attention and stimulate their interest. This leads perfectly into decoding the title, predicting the writer's opinion, and setting the stage for reading. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 2: The Big Picture Purpose: Practice skimming for gist & confirm predictions. Activity Steps: 1. Skim & Scan Q1: What is the writer’s main point? Q2: Do you agree with him/her? Why or why not? 2. Identify Structure Q3: What kind of passage is it? Q4: What is the structure of the passage? Evaluation: Check whether the students have accurately grasped the core argument. The students’ interpretation of the viewpoints can then smoothly transit to the next section. 1.7.2013 Next trains students to read for gist. They'll quickly find the main point, check their predictions, and start to identify the text's genre and structure. It's a fast-paced and effective way to get into the heart of the text. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 3: Mapping the Argument Purpose: Deepen reading comprehension, break down the text, analyze the text’s argumentative structure, learn practical argumentation techniques, and build higher-order thinking skills. Steps: 1. Detailed Reading 2. Analyze the “How” 3. Critical Discussion Evaluation: Teachers evaluate the ability of information extraction and integration based on the completion and accuracy of the mind maps; and assess the text analysis ability by identifying the writing techniques. By means of discussion and speech, observe the depth and breadth of thinking. 1.7.2013 Now for the "Mapping the Argument" activity. This is where students dive deep. Students can visually organize the text's arguments and evidence by choosing and creating their own mind maps. This not only aids comprehension but also teaches them how to analyze and break down a text, and builds higher-order thinking skills. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 4: Debate with AI Purpose: Apply knowledge creatively in a realistic communication task. This activity is incredibly engaging, promotes critical thinking, and provides a real-world communication challenge that students love. 01 Mission: Your friend is a “workaholic AI” who thinks fun is a waste of time. Your mission: convince it otherwise! 02 Preparation: In groups, students quickly review the text's arguments and prepare their points. 03 Interaction: Groups take turns interacting with the AI. The AI presents counter-arguments. Evaluation: Observes the effectiveness of the group cooperation process. Through sharing, the teacher assesses whether students can flexibly and logically apply viewpoints to make arguments, and evaluate the accuracy and richness of their language output. 1.7.2013 “Debate with AI”is where learning comes to life. Students must use the arguments from the text to persuade an AI agent. This activity is incredibly engaging, promotes critical thinking, and provides a real-world communication challenge that students love. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 5: Brainstorm & Share Purpose Synthesize the key learning points from the lesson, think beyond the text, explore more about the benefits brought by having fun and connect them to personal experience and real-world scenarios. Steps 1. Brainstorm: In small groups, think of other benefits of fun that weren’t mentioned. 2. Discuss: Debate: “Do you live to work/study, or work/study to live?” Share personal thoughts. Evaluation The teacher provides timely feedback based on the students' sharing. The students can express the benefits of having fun beyond the text in clear language, and they can also understand the importance of balancing entertainment with learning. 1.7.2013 After the AI challenge, students move to a "Brainstorm & Share" session. This activity encourages students to think beyond the text and connect the lesson to their own lives. Students can develop their own philosophy and deepen their understanding of the theme. ‹#› Part 4: Learning Activities - Activity 6: Summary Purpose Summarize the key knowledge from the lesson and consolidate understanding of argumentative essay structures and techniques. STEPS (Q&A) Q1: What have you learned about an argumentative essay? Q2: What have you learned from this passage? Evaluation By observing the students’ responses and discussions, Tcan determine whether they have mastered the structure and elements of argumentative essays well, and whether they have deeply understood this text. 1.7.2013 By discussing and summarizing what they've learned about argumentative essays and the lesson's main points, students can consolidate their learning and ensure the knowledge of the text is internalized. 动态的板书设计,板书设计单开一页,作业设计放到教学过程里面。 ‹#› Part 4: Homework - A note to your friend& Make a video Must do Instruction: Tom has been under a lot of pressure from his exams recently.
