Thanks to doctor Wang Zhenyi, they can buy a box of potentially (可能地) life-saving medicine at an affordable price in China. Wang Zhenyi, a 97-year-old doctor in Shanghai, still goes to work every day. In the 1980s, he found a new way to treat APL, a dangerous blood cancer that mostly attacks young people. At that time, doctors tried to kill cancer cells with strong medicines, but only about one in ten patients lived for five more years. Wang had a different idea: he believed that cells could be “educated” instead of being killed. In 1986, a six-year-old girl was close to death, but after taking Wang’s special form of vitamin A for a week, she got better and has stayed healthy for more than thirty years. Later, Wang and his students used this vitamin together with arsenic, an old medicine. Because the two worked together, the five-year survival rate (生存率) jumped from 10 percent to over 97 percent, making APL the first curable (能治愈的) blood cancer. Wang never asked for a patent (专利) on his treatment, because he wanted every patient to be able to afford it. He has also given away all of the money he won from prizes. When he received the 7-million-yuan Future Science Prize in 2020, he felt pleased but also worried: he thought such prizes should go to young researchers. Today, Wang still helps young doctors. Each week they bring him a difficult case, and he reads the latest papers to find answers. “I may not have another ten years,” he says, “but I can be their climbing stick.” 39. What was the big problem of APL treatment before Wang Zhenyi’s discovery? A. The treatment cost patients too much money. B. Few patients could live long after treatment. C. No medicine could kill cancer cells at all. D. Doctors refused to treat young patients. 40. What can we learn from the six-year-old girl’s story? A. Her recovery showed that Wang’s new way could work. B. She was the first patient to try strong medicines. C. She later became a doctor and worked with Wang. D. Her illness returned after more than thirty years. 41. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph really mean? A. He wants the young doctors to help him climb higher in his career. B. He is proud that he has trained so many clever young doctors. C. He is ready to support the young doctors as they move forward. D. He believes his own long years of research have come to an end. C Sleep may seem like a time when the brain rests, but it is not. While the body is at rest, the brain stays busy, reviewing the day’s events and linking them to past experiences. Yet scientists have long wondered how the brain stores new memories without disrupting (中断;扰乱) old ones. To find out, researchers at Cornell University in the US studied mice. They fixed tiny electrodes and cameras onto the animals’ heads, and then watched the mice learn new tasks during the day, such as finding their way through a maze (迷宫), and sleep at night. The team found two stages during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, a period that is important for forming memories. In the first stage, the mice replayed new memories, and their pupils (the black centres of the eyes) became smaller. In the second stage, they recalled older memories, and their pupils became larger. The two stages followed each other quickly, helping to explain something we all know: because the brain takes turns between new and old memories, learning something new does not erase (抹去) what we already know. We can learn to play the piano, for example, without forgetting how to ride a bike. The researchers also blocked sharp-wave ripples, which are known to affect memory. When they did this during the first stage, the mice could not remember anything new. The discovery is important. It may one day help doctors treat people with memory problems, and it may also interest computer scientists. Unlike the brain, machines are still far behind biology: when computers learn something new, they often forget old information completely. However, the study was carried out on mice, so more research on humans is needed. 42. When mice’s pupils become larger in NREM sleep, what is happening in their brains? A. They are storing what they just learned. B. They are bringing back old memories. C. Their sharp-wave ripples are fully blocked. D. They are learning new tasks in the maze. 43. What can we learn from the experiment about the sharp-wave ripple? A. Blocking it in Stage 2 will erase all old memories. B. Mice cannot sleep without sharp-wave ripples. C. It is the only thing that controls all memories. D. It matters for building new memories in Stage One. 44. A student learns a new song on Sunday and still remembers an old song on Monday. Which idea in the passage best explains this? A. The brain removes old information before it stores anything new. B. The brain blocks sharp-wave ripples while the student is asleep. C. The brain keeps the two songs apart by taking turns between them. D. The brain can replay only one song during a whole night’s sleep. 45. The writer wrote this passage mainly to ________. A. explain a new finding about how sleep protects our memories B. advise readers to sleep more in order to remember better C. compare mice with computers in the study of memory D. introduce the history of memory research at Cornell University 第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一项为多余选项。(共5小题,计5分) China and Laos are working together on energy.
