While-reading · Q2 Read for details
Find the sentences about time and surroundings(环境). What does the writer want to tell us?
(1) it was 10:00 p.m.?
(2) there were no other fishermen or boats around?
(1) It was two hours before the bass season opened. Keeping the fish would break the rule.
(2) No one had seen them — no one would ever know. The writer creates a perfect chance to do wrong. It echoes the ending: Do we do right when no one is looking?
While-reading · Q3 Read for feelings
Read the dialogue. The father said, but Jim cried.
What do their words show about each of them?
Father — calm, firm, patient:
"You'll have to put it back, son." "There will be other fish."
Jim — excited, then shocked, upset and unwilling:
"Dad!" "Not as big as this one!"
While-reading · Q4 Read for the conflict
"It was a shame to let go of the fish, but Jim understood what he had to do."
What did Jim understand? Why did he slowly remove the hook?
He understood that doing the right thing matters more than keeping the fish.
"Slowly" shows he still loved the fish — it was hard to let go, but he made the right choice.
While-reading · Q5 Read for meaning
Jim never caught such an amazing fish again, but he "does see that same fish"
every time he comes up against a question of ethics. What does the fish stand for?
The fish stands for every ethical choice in our life.
Whenever Jim faces a question of right and wrong, he remembers that night — and the lesson his father taught him.

Why is the story called "Catch of a lifetime"?
Literal meaning(表层含义):
Deeper meaning:
the biggest bass Jim ever caught — a once-in-a-lifetime fish.
the lifelong lesson he "caught" that night — do right even when no one is looking. This catch stayed with him forever.
After reading · Q7 Family traditions
Our unit is "Family traditions". What tradition did Jim's father pass on to him?
Not a recipe or a custom, but a way of living:
honesty — doing right even when no one is looking.
What parents say and do every day is a family's true tradition.
Culture bridge · 君子慎独
Jim's lesson: do right when no one is looking.
Is there a Chinese idea that says the same thing?
慎独 — self-discipline when you are alone
《礼记 · 中庸》:"莫见乎隐,莫显乎微,故君子慎其独也。"
A gentleman is most watchful over himself when no one can see him.
Why do they echo each other?
两者都说:真正的修养,不在人前表演,而在无人处的选择。
慎独 is about self-discipline — being the same inside and out.
Culture bridge · 许衡与慎独
Though the pear tree has no owner, my heart has its own master.
Xu Heng was a young scholar in the Yuan Dynasty. One hot day, he and his friends were travelling.
Tired and thirsty, they found a pear tree by the road, full of juicy pears. Everyone rushed to pick them — except Xu Heng. He sat quietly without moving.
"Why not pick some? The tree has no owner," his friends said.
Xu Heng answered, "The tree may have no owner, but my heart has its own master."
He would not take what was not his, even when no one was watching.
Xu Heng 许衡 · Yuan Dynasty
许衡(元朝) "梨虽无主,我心有主。"
Culture bridge · 家风与表达
Chinese families pass on 慎独 through 家训 (family lessons).
How do we tell this Chinese idea in English?
中国传统家训,把"慎独"写进家风,代代相传。
《朱子家训》:"黎明即起,洒扫庭除" — 修身从日常小事做起。
曾国藩家书:"慎独则心安。" Self-discipline when alone brings peace of mind.
Tell China's story in English:

Where is your "lake"?
Talk about a moment when no one was watching —
in an exam, online, on the street ... What did you do — or will you do?
Would you change your answer to our opening question?
Doing right when no one is looking —
a lesson caught, and kept for a lifetime.
君子慎独 —— 无人处,方见真修养。
Be watchful over yourself when alone.
