一、人与社会--家乡变化
(一)
For the most part of my early life, I lived in a small town. As I got older, it seemed as if my town got smaller. All the things I could see in the town were not interesting. I wanted to be in new places with better chances and to meet new people. I moved to a big city to go to college and worked hard to achieve what I had dreamt of.
For the first year when I was away from home, I wanted to stay away and never go back. When people were taking a trip to my hometown, I would always think, “Why would they want to do that? It’s not beautiful.” All I had towards my hometown were negative feelings.
However, after being away for about 3 years, my perspective had completely changed. I had nothing but love for my hometown—its beauty and the sentimental (感情上的) value that it holds.
After all, it’s where I’m from. Yes, there are some bad things, but there are more good memories: Dad sent me to school; Mum let me stop for ice cream after
school every Friday to celebrate the end of the week; I walked around downtown with friends in high school.
You might stay away from something so that you can truly admire it. It’s true that distance adds beauty. Now I visit my hometown every chance I get. Even if I no longer live there, it will always hold a piece of my heart.

A tourism project brought great changes to Nizhuhe Village, a remote and poor village between Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. It has not only greatly improved local educational conditions, but also turned villagers’ hard lives into better ones, showing a warm miracle in the mountain area.
In the past, the village was cut off from the outside world. The only way to go out was the rough and muddy mountain roads. For students like Chen Honghan, the journey to school was extremely dangerous. They had to climb cliffs and walk for three long hours every day. The tiring trip often made them feel tired and even put their lives in danger. Villagers could only depend on traditional farming to make a basic living.
Since 2017, the local eco-cultural tourism project has completely turned over a new leaf. Workers built a scenic bus line, a cliffside lift and a cable car for free. Now Chen’s school trip takes only 30 minutes, which is safe and relaxing. She first rides a 6-minute scenic bus and then takes a lift that climbs 268 metres. Next, she takes a cable car ride that climbs over 200 metres. After a 1-kilometre walk, she arrives at the school in just under 30 minutes. The journey seems like flying through soft clouds: This special “cloud school bus” keeps students away from danger and makes going to school a happy experience.
★ In 2024, about 300,000 tourists visited the village, bringing a profit of nearly 20 million yuan. Many villagers opened farmstays, small shops and coffee shops. Some people who worked in big cities returned home to start their own businesses. Local infrastructure (基础设施) was improved a lot, with cleaner roads and better public services. By communicating with different tourists, villagers opened their eyes and learned new skills.
This tourism project is “a ladder to the clouds” for the mountain students; giving them better education and bright hopes. It encourages them to study hard and come back to build their lovely hometown in the future.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because the area was short of water.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal (灌溉渠) began to be built in my village.“Who are they?” I asked.“They are good men from our government,” Grandma replied.
Then, I moved to a city for my middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything had changed. We saw the canal running through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal was completed, villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore. 三、人与自我--语言策略

I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens you up to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.
But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.
However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, thick-skinned is to describe a person who doesn’t care for criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that “houlianpi” in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, “look on with folded arms” means “xiushoupangguan”, and “burn the boats” is similar to “pofuchenzhou”.

Last term, my English was really poor. I spent hours memorizing words every day, but I still forgot them quickly. When I had English tests, I always got low marks and felt upset.
One day, my English teacher talked to me. She told me not to just memorize words by heart. Instead, I should use them in sentences and short passages. She also suggested that I listen to English songs and watch short English videos for 15 minutes every day.
I followed her advice. Every morning, I wrote three sentences with the new words I learned. After school, I listened to my favourite English songs and repeated the lyrics. At weekends, I watched funny English cartoons and tried to understand the dialogues.

Tom was a slow reader. Words seemed to jump on the page, and he often lost his place. His reading teacher, Mrs Green, suggested a method called “chunking” — reading groups of words together instead of one word at a time.
At first Tom thought it wouldn’t work. But Mrs Green gave him short passages and asked him to mark natural word groups with a pencil. “Read them as phrases, not letters,” she said. Tom practised for ten minutes every day after school.
After two months, his reading speed doubled. More importantly, he understood more because his brain wasn’t busy decoding (解码) single letters. “I actually enjoy reading now,” Tom told his mum.
Mrs Green explained, “Many students read slowly simply because they try to say every sound. Chunking trains your eyes to take in more at a glance.” She added that this skill also helps with memory and focus.
1.What problem did Tom have at first?
A.He couldn’t remember new words. B.He disliked all kinds of books.
C.He read slowly and lost his place easily. D.He had trouble writing compositions.
2.What does “chunking” mean in the passage?
A.Reading word by word carefully. B.Reading groups of words together.
C.Listening to audio books. D.Memorizing whole passages by heart.
3.How long did Tom practise every day?
A.Ten minutes. B.Five minutes. C.Half an hour. D.One hour.
4.Why did chunking help Tom understand more?
A.Because his brain focused on meaning, not single letters.
B.Because his teacher gave him easier books.
C.Because he read aloud all the time.
D.Because he used a dictionary for every word.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Great Teacher’s Life B.How Chunking Changed a Slow Reader
C.The Importance of Writing Diaries D.Why Reading Is Boring
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.A 5.B

What makes a good learner? Good learners are not always those who get the highest scores. Instead, they have useful learning habits and active learning skills.
Good learners often think actively. They do not just wait for teachers to give answers. When they read textbooks, they note down important points and raise questions. For example, if they cannot understand a grammar rule, they will mark it and try to find answers in books or ask classmates for help. They also know how to make good use of time. They make small daily learning plans instead of cramming all work before tests.
Besides, good learners are not afraid of mistakes. Mistakes are valuable for study. When they make mistakes in exercises, they will analyze why they go wrong and correct them in time. They will review these wrong points regularly. Some students hate making mistakes and avoid difficult tasks. In fact, this will slow down their progress.
Good learners also know to reflect on their learning. Every week, they will think about what they have learned and what they still need to improve. Active learning does not mean studying day and night, but learning in smart ways.

Last Tuesday was my best friend Lily’s birthday. I wanted to give her a special gift, but I didn't have much money. I thought about buying a card, but it seemed too common.
Suddenly, I remembered a box of old things in my room. There was a small wooden box my grandpa made for me when I was eight. It was not perfect, but it was full of love. I decided to turn it into a “Memory Box” for Lily.
I painted the box light blue, her favorite color. Then I put many small things inside: a movie ticket of the film we watched together, a leaf from the park where we first met, and a small toy bear I got from her last year. I also wrote a letter, writing down the story behind each item.
When Lily opened the box, her eyes opened wide. She read the letter carefully and smiled. “This is the best gift I have ever received,” she said. “Every time I feel sad, I can open it and remember our happy days.”

Do you often forget what you have studied, or walk into a room and forget why you went there? You are not alone. Our brains are not designed to remember everything, but the good news is that memory can be trained. In fact, many people have improved their memory with simple methods.
Take Li Wei, a 16-year-old student from Shanghai, for example. He used to be very forgetful. He often forgot to bring his homework, and he could not remember English words for more than two days. He felt upset and believed he had a “bad memory”. His grades were dropping because of his poor memory. One day, he read about a memory winner. The winner said that anyone could improve their memory with the right training.
Li Wei decided to give it a try. First, he learned to associate new information with something he already knew. For example, to remember the word “memorize”, he connected it with “memory”. This technique is called word association. This method was so useful that he could remember 30 new English words a week. He also started using spaced repetition (重复). Instead of repeating a word 20 times in one sitting, he reviewed it after one day, then three days, then one week.
After two months, his memory improved greatly. He never forgot his homework again. He also encouraged his classmates to join him. Now, Li Wei wants to share his method with others. He is starting a “Memory Training Group” at his school. The group meets twice a week. Members take short memory tests and share their own tips.

A.He often missed school. B.He had no friends.
C.He hated studying. D.He could not remember English words.
2.What does the underlined word “associate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Forget. B.Connect.

① Li Wei shared his method and started a memory training group.
② Li Wei was very forgetful and couldn’t remember English words.
③ Li Wei learned word association and spaced repetition to improve his memory.

It was a busy Saturday as usual. Outside, my father and Mr. Patrick were preparing firewood. Inside their own houses, my mother and Mrs. Patrick were busy with spring cleaning.
Somehow a few boys ran to the field with their kites, catching everyone’s eyes nearby. My mother looked at the messy room. Again she looked out of the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s watch the boys fly kites.” On the way, we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing in shame as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.
We played with the boys and watched the kites flying higher and higher. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dancing in the wind, and finally brought it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again. Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. At that moment we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty, and children forgot their everyday fights.
The strange thing was that we didn’t mention that day afterward. So I locked the memory up in my heart.
Years went on. Then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen, while my daughter was crying, “Go park, see duck.” “No,” I said. “I have lots of things to do.”
My mom, who was visiting us, said, “It’s a warm day with beautiful sunshine. Do you remember the day we flew kites?” I stopped my work with a rush of memories. Then I told my little girl, “Let’s go! It’s too good a day to miss.”
Another ten years passed. I visited the youngest Patrick boy who was badly ill. A smile appeared on his pale face, “Do you remember—no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t have the influence on you as it did on me.” “Remember what?” “The day we flew kites.”

Not long ago, a photo of the football players in my college showed up on my phone as a “memory”, which was kept through the digital memory. I was surprised to see the photo at first and sweet memories flashed into my mind.
In the photo, the players from the football team hugged together in excitement after they won the game. At that time, I took a photo of them with my phone. It recorded the friendship and the happiness. Then, I fell into the habit of taking photos of everything. More and more photos filled my phone so I almost forgot this photo. Thanks to the digital memory, I could enjoy the happy time again.
People had to make an effort to record things in the past. But now we can do something like that easily through the digital memory. We put what we want to remember into our smartphones. Most of the photos that I have kept on my phone—and in the cloud now—bring happy memories back to me.
However, not all the digital memories are happy. Some are sad. When I see the photos of my lost pet, I am worried. Because they make me recall something I want to forget. Usually, digital memories are sent to me non-stop and without any human-like feelings. That drives me crazy.
It’s hard to say clearly when the digital memory spread rapidly. These digital memories, whether happy or sad, break into our lives. In my job as a reporter, I have spent the past five years taking different photos. They will always be there, whatever.
1.How did the writer feel when he saw the photo at first?
A.Excited. B.Afraid. C.Bored. D.Surprised.
2.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to (指代)?

C.The football team. D.The game held long ago.
3.How do people record things easily now?
A.By using smartphones. B.By valuing time.
C.By creating memories with feelings. D.By developing good habits.
4.Why does the writer mention his lost pet?
A.To hide some sadness in his life.
B.To help people run away from the past.
C.To show his dislike of some digital memories.
D.To explain the digital memory is very easy to use.
5.Which of the following is RIGHT?
A.The photos on phones record the past for people.
B.The players in the football team liked taking photos.
C.People today have to remember lots of happy times.
D.The digital memory started when the writer became a reporter.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.C 5.A

D.Unhappy things that happened in the writer’s hometown.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The writer wants to live in his hometown.
B.The writer won’t go back to his hometown.
C.The writer starts loving and valuing his hometown.
D.The writer thinks the city is better than his hometown.

And more and more people started planting fruit and the production increased a lot.
Thanks to the government’s canal project, our village has developed much better.

I’m still on my journey to learn Chinese. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.

After two months, something amazing happened. I could remember words much better, and I even started to talk about my hobbies in English. In the latest test, I got an A! I realized that smart learning is better than hard learning without a plan.

1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.How to get high scores in exams. B.Good learners think actively and manage time well.
