根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
For thousands of years, human beings have looked up at the night sky and wondered what lies beyond it. Today, we are finally beginning to find out. 1________
First, space exploration answers some of our deepest questions. 2________ Are we alone in the universe? How did the earth begin? By sending probes and telescopes into space, scientists are slowly finding answers that early humans could only dream of.
Second, space technology improves life on the earth. 3________ Weather satellites warn us about coming storms; GPS guides us when we drive; and materials developed for spacecraft are now used in everyday products such as sports shoes and phones.
Third, space exploration brings nations together. 4________ Astronauts from different countries have worked side by side on the International Space Station. When they look down at the earth, they see no borders — only one planet, home to all of us.
Of course, space exploration is expensive and sometimes dangerous. 5________ But as one astronaut said, “If we only do the safe and cheap things, we will never learn anything new.”
A. Here are some of the reasons why space exploration matters.
B. Where did we come from, and where are we going?
C. Many of the things we use every day began as space research.
D. Space projects often involve international teamwork.
E. Some people argue that the money should be spent on the earth.
F. Space exploration has no connection with daily life.
G. Only a few countries are able to explore space.
五、阅读理解
(一)
In 2019, China's Chang'e 4 lander became the first spacecraft in history to land on the far side of the moon. The far side is the part of the moon that never faces the earth, so it had never been visited before.
Landing there was far from easy. Because the far side cannot be seen from the earth, scientists could not send signals directly to the lander. China had solved this problem two months earlier by placing a relay satellite in space, which passed signals between the earth and the moon.
The lander carried a small rover, named Yutu 2, which means “Jade Rabbit 2”. Yutu 2 has been moving slowly across the surface, studying the rocks and the soil. It has already sent back valuable information about what lies under the moon's surface. By 2020, it had travelled more than 500 metres — a long way, at a speed of only about two hundred metres a year.
Why is the far side so interesting? Scientists say that it is very different from the side we can see. Its surface is much older, and there are more craters. Studying it may help us understand how the moon, and even the earth, were formed billions of years ago.
1.What made Chang'e 4 special?
A. It was the first spacecraft to land on the far side of the moon.
B. It was the largest spacecraft ever built.
C. It was the first spacecraft to leave the earth.
D. It carried the first person to the moon.
2.What problem did scientists face in landing on the far side?
A. The surface was too hot.
B. They could not send signals directly to the lander.
C. There was no place to land.
D. The spacecraft was too heavy.
3.What is Yutu 2?
A. A relay satellite.
B. A small rover on the moon.
C. A rocket for space travel.
D. A camera on the earth.
4.How far had Yutu 2 travelled by 2020?
A. More than 500 metres.
B. More than 5,000 metres.
C. About 200 metres.
D. About 20 kilometres.
5.Why do scientists want to study the far side?
A. It is closer to the earth.
B. Its older surface may explain how the moon and earth were formed.
C. It is where the Jade Rabbit lives.
D. It is easier to reach than the near side.
(二)
Mars has been called the most likely place for human beings to live besides the earth. It is smaller than the earth, but it has seasons, deserts, mountains and even frozen water at its poles. For years, scientists have been asking: could people really live there one day?
The problems are enormous. First, Mars has almost no air for people to breathe. Its atmosphere is more than 95% carbon dioxide, and the pressure is less than 1% of that on the earth. Humans would need special suits or sealed buildings just to step outside.
Second, Mars is very cold. The average temperature is about minus 60 degrees Celsius. Third, it is very far away — a journey from the earth takes about seven months, and the planets are only close enough for such a trip every two years.
Yet many scientists believe a human mission is possible within a few decades. Robotic explorers are already there, studying the soil, the weather and possible sources of water. In several countries, engineers are designing rockets and living units for future Mars travellers.
Should we go? That is a question everyone must answer for themselves. But as one space scientist put it, “Every time people said that something was impossible, someone went ahead and did it. That is how we got out of the caves and onto the moon.”
6.What do we know about Mars?
A. It is larger than the earth.
B. It has seasons, deserts and frozen water at its poles.
C. It has an atmosphere just like the earth's.
D. It has no mountains at all.
7.Why would humans need special suits on Mars?
A. Because there is almost no air to breathe.
B. Because the sun is too bright.
C. Because the surface is covered in water.
D. Because animals live there.
8.What is the average temperature on Mars?
A. About 60 degrees Celsius.
B. About minus 60 degrees Celsius.
C. About 0 degrees Celsius.
D. About minus 6 degrees Celsius.
9.How long does a journey from the earth to Mars take?
A. About seven weeks.
B. About seven months.
C. About seven years.
D. About seven days.
10.What does the space scientist's words suggest?
A. People should never take risks.
B. Impossible things can be achieved with courage and effort.
C. Mars will never be visited by humans.
D. Only robots can explore space.
