A tornado (龙卷风) is a tower of spinning (旋转的) air. Tornadoes can be very dangerous. The cause of tornadoes is not fully known, they form during thunderstorms (雷雨) . Inside the stormy clouds, warm air rises and cool air falls. The warm and cool air can begin to spin. This spinning air can push out of the stormy clouds as a funnel (漏斗). When the funnel of spinning air touches the ground, it becomes a tornado.
There are three levels of tornadoes. Weak tornadoes have wind speeds that are below 160km/h. They last for less than ten minutes. They cause small damage (破坏) like fallen tree branches (树枝). Strong tornadoes have wind speeds that are between 177 km/h and 330 km/h and can last about twenty minutes. These tornadoes can cause quite a bit of damage and can push cars and trains over. The most dangerous tornadoes are called violent tornadoes. They can last for longer than an hour and have wind speeds that are higher than 330 km/h. These deadly tornadoes can lift houses and cars into the air.
Tornadoes and cyclones (旋风) are very different. Tornadoes form on land and cyclones form on the ocean. Tornadoes can be a few kilometers wide. The biggest cyclones can be hundreds of kilometers across.
Some people set up a safe room in a basement. They get a radio, water, sleeping bags and extra food. They also keep their house and garden clean by getting rid of dead trees or weak fences. If a tornado alert is given, get your safe room ready. Do not go outside or near windows. Hide under a large bed or table. Get out of your trailer or car. If you are outside, find flat ground. Lie down and protect your neck and head with your arms. Once the tornado is over, turn on the radio. Avoid any damage areas and do not go near any fallen power lines.

Have you ever heard of the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖)? It is one of the highest honors in mathematics (数学). The prize is often called the Nobel Prize of Mathematics. It is given to young mathematicians who are under 40. It is used to reward their excellent work in math. Each winner is given a gold medal and prize money. Since 1936, only a few mathematicians have received this honor.
On July 23, 2026, the world was watching Philadelphia, USA. Four brilliant mathematicians received the Fields Medal there. Two of them came from China. They are Wang Hong and Deng Yu. They are the first Chinese citizens who won this prize. They are also the first two classmates who won together.
Wang Hong was born in Guilin, Guangxi. When she was 16, she entered Peking University to study. Later, she changed her major to mathematics. She studied in France and America to get higher degrees. In 2025, she became a professor in France. She was the first Asian person who held this job. Wang is the third woman in history to win it. Deng Yu is 37 years old and was born in Shenzhen. As a teenager, he won a gold medal in math. He entered Peking University without taking the college entrance exam. In 2008, he moved to America to continue his studies. He got his doctor’s degree from Princeton University in 2015. Now he is a professor who works at the University of Chicago. He made great progress on a very old math question. He proved how tiny particles connect to the fluid equations. This great work is very important for physics and math.

Tianzhu Mountain in China is famous for its high cliffs and amazing sights. But keeping this mountain clean is not easy. Tourists throw rubbish on the cliffs. Every day, a group of workers pick up the rubbish. They are famous as the “cliffside cleaners”.
Tu Yousheng is one of them. He started to work here over 20 years ago. Every morning, he uses safety ropes, takes a rubbish bag, and climbs down the cliffs. The old man was alone in his small boat, far out at sea. He had been fighting a great fish for days, and he was tired. His body was hurt, but his heart was still strong. He knew he could not give up. The fish was big and powerful, pulling the boat through the terrible weather.
“I will continue until I win,” he thought. The sea was wild, and the wind was strong, but the old man did not feel lonely. He had the fish to fight, and he had a strong heart. He knew he was old, but he also knew he was brave. The fish swam deeper, and the old man let out more line.
He could feel the fish’s strength, but he did not get scared. The old man looked at the water and thought of the boy, Manolin. He wished the boy was with him. But he was alone, and he knew he had to be strong. He would keep fighting, no matter what happened. He would not let it win.
①Hello! Welcome to my blog (博客). This is my first post, and I’m excited to have you here.
②My name is Alena Jiang, and I come from China. I’ve been studying in America for five years. Now I am a student at New York University (NYU). I’ve made a lot of great friends here. Living away from my parents has taught me to be independent and to understand the world in my own way.
③Since I started studying abroad (国外), many of my friends in China have asked me, “What’s life like in the US? What’s the difference between studying in China and in America?” I’m always happy to share my life here as a Chinese student, and they always enjoy listening to my stories. Some of them have even decided to study abroad and experience American life for themselves. I’ve tried to help these friends get used to life in the West. After taking my first digital marketing (数字营销) class at NYU, I got the idea to start a blog to share my experiences and help more young adventurers who are new to America.
④A big part of this blog will be about my life in New York and my studies at NYU. I write about my favourite restaurants, fashion stores, museums and libraries. I’ll share a lot of tips that have helped me live better here. For example, I plan to write an article about some popular Chinese restaurants in Midtown Manhattan. They can ease your homesickness when you miss the taste of home.
⑤Thanks for reading my post! Please feel free to share your advice and thoughts so that I can make my blog more helpful.

Wang Hong and Deng Yu were classmates in 2007. They reached the top of the math world together. Their success shows that Chinese mathematicians can also do well in mathematics. They inspire young students everywhere to explore math.
