Coined by a Wall Street Journal writer, admin night is a special period of time, usually 2-4
hours in the evening, when a small group of friends gather to tackle personal administrative tasks
in a social,low-pressure setting.
This online fashion trend combines productivity with companionship, turning boring "to-dos"
into a fun group activity. Its core goal is to complete postponed tasks rather than just socialize,
using“body doubling”,a psychological phenomenon where people perform better with a peer(同龄
人)present,.to beat procrastination(拖,a延症)and reduce the mental stress of uncompleted tasks.

At 74,Margaret Ellis found herself asking what she should do next to keep both her mind
active and her body strong. After retiring from her long career as a literature teacher, she suddenly
had more free time than ever before. She could either return to the classroom as a student by
taking an art history course,or try an initial training programme in Nordic walking(北欧健走).
After thinking it over, she chose the latter.
On the first day of the training,Margaret arrived at the park with her new poles under her
arm and took her place in the group as if it were part of her usual morning routine.Yet only when
the session began did she realise how long it had been since she had last learned something
entirely new.
Nordic walking was harder than she had expected. It required rhythm, balance, posture, and
coordination between the arms and legs.Several times, she lost the pattern and had to start again.
But instead of feeling discouraged, she tried to treat the movements like a performance.Years
earlier, she had learned folk dance and enjoyed hiking, and those experiences helped her find the
needed rhythm.“I listened for the rhythm,”she said,“and then I let my body follow.”
Physical activity had always been an important part of Margaret's life. She had once been a
swimmer,a cyclist, and a teacher who enjoyed organising school sports events. But what drew her
most strongly to Nordic walking was something personal. Her father had loved long walks and often
said,"Walk first.Answers come later."Whenever life felt confusing,he would go outdoors and

return calmer than before.Remembering him,Margaret felt she was not just learning a new sport.
She was reconnecting with an old family habit.
Although Margaret joined the programme as a student, she soon became an inspiration to the
rest of the group. When younger participants complained about tired arms or cold weather, they
noticed her quietly adjusting her poles and starting again.
24.How did Margaret probably feel on the first day of the training?
A.Proud and certain.
B.Relaxed and optimistic.
C.Excited but nervous.
D.Surprised but disappointed.

D.She joined the training to reconnect with her family habit.
27.What message does the author deliver in the text?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Health always comes first.
C.It is never too late to begin.

New bite-resistant materials can reduce damage from white and tiger sharks'multi-rowed
teeth, researchers report in Wildlife Research. The materials block severe injuries that lead to
deadly blood loss during shark attacks.
Sharks generally leave humans alone. In 2024,there were 71 shark bites globally, with only
seven deaths. While bite numbers have remained stable or decreased in some regions, the overall
number of shark bites has increased."That leads to more concern from the public about these
shark bites and what could be done to reduce the risks, says Charlie Huveneers,a marine
biologist at Flinders University in Adelaide,Australia.
Existing technologies, like devices that disturb shark's ability to sense their target's electric
fields, can help repel sharks.Instead of preventing shark encounters entirely,bite-resistant
wetsuits are emerging as an important new safety option. But traditional shark-resistant suits are
heavy and make swimming difficult. The updated wetsuit materials aim to maximize protection
without reducing functionality.
Huveneers and his colleagues tested four different bite-resistant materials to enhance the
traditional artificial material. One design integrates protective panels with small sections of
traditional suits, covering high-risk areas like the main arteries (in the arms and legs.
Other designs use Kevlar, used in bulletproof vests(防弾背心),or strong yet lightweight fibers
like polyethylene, commonly found in sailboat ropes.
To test the materials, the researchers attracted white and tiger sharks, which cause most of
the bites in Australia,to their boat with bait (balls.Once sharks showed interest, the
scientists replaced the bait with either bite-resistant or traditional wetsuit material attached to
"bite packages".All four materials nearly eliminated severe damage, even after sharks bit or
dragged the packages underwater. The traditional material had deep holes, while the bite-resistant
materials were left with shallow marks, more like household pets'teeth marks. The innovation may
prevent ocean enthusiasts from bleeding out, which is the main cause of death in the rare event of
shark attacks.
Huveneers notes that these materials cannot prevent all the risk (e.g.,internal injuries may
第4页(共8页)
still occur)and are not a universal fix. They should be used alongside other strategies, including
education,technology and beach safety practices.
28.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Human-shark conflicts have reduced.
B.Global shark bites amount is stable.
C.Shark bites typically lead to death.
D.Preventing shark attacks is essential.
29.What does the underlined word "repel"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Appeal to.
B.Calm down.
C.Drive away.
D.Search for.
30.What did the researchers do to test the materials?
A.They created a shark teeth model.B.They attracted sharks to bite samples.
C.They made the materials bitten by tigers.D.They analyzed their material composition.
31.What does Huveneers think of the new materials?
A.They have certain limitations.
B.They are cost-effective solutions.
C.They will minimize human injuries.
D.They are superior to existing safety methods.

The term "brain rot"was popularized by Generation Z to describe the mental fog and
cognitive decline linked to endless scrolling ()Experts have now warned that this habit,
which we often dismiss as"just watching videos",is actually changing how our brains work. They
are dulling our focus, weakening memory and even destroying decision-making.
Researchers conducted a study that examined the neurological(神经学的)effects of short--
video addiction. They used a combination of behavioral analysis, brain imaging and computational
models of decision-making.The study looked at how extreme engagement with short videos might
influence the way our brains process rewards, risks and choices.
One way being addicted to short video consumption affects you is by hurting your "loss
aversion. This is the tendency to feel the pain of losing something more strongly than the pleasure
of gaining something of equal value. In decision-making,this comparison act makes you think
twice before making choices that could lead to negative outcomes. However,if the sensitivity to
loss is reduced, you're more likely to make emotional or risky decisions without fully considering
the consequences.
In the study, researchers found that the more addicted someone was to short videos, the less
sensitive they were to potential losses. This impacted their decision-making,which became more
reward-driven,even when risks were high.
Brain scans from the study revealed that people with higher short-video addiction had lower
activity in a part of the brain called the“precuneus”(楔前叶)when thinking about potential
gains. This part helps you reflect and consider outcomes by thinking things through. The brain may
not fully process what's at risk when this part is less active. This holds true especially when
something is exciting to gain. This,in turn, makes it easier to ignore the risks.
Essentially,if loss stops feeling like a big deal,your decision-making becomes high-risk.
So,the next time you're deep into the screen, ask yourself:Are you really willing to train your
brain to chase rewards at the cost of good judgment?
32.How is the study conducted?
A.By investigating typical cases.
B.By reviewing the previous studies.
C.By examining large-scale videos.
D.By analyzing with various methods.
33.What can we learn about those who were less sensitive to losses?
A.They were more sensitive to potential risks
B.They were less likely to make wise choices
C.They showed little interest in getting rewards
D.They preferred gains that were small but certain.

34.What does the author intend to show by referring to the "precuneus"?
A.Its impact on our physical health.
B.The process of decision-making.
C.Its relation with considering risks
D.The connection of different risks.
35.What does the text mainly discuss?
A.How short-video addiction affects our brain.
B.What is the proper way of training our brain.
C.How to stay away from short-video addiction.
D.Why the term“brain rot”has become popular,

My son Mike was once a curious boy who loved exploring the real world. Now,he often
spends hours lying on the sofa, his eyes glued to his phone screen.I miss the little explorer who
asked endless questions about nature.
One Sunday, seeing him scroll mindlessly again,I sat beside him."Remember watching
ants for hours in the garden?"I said."You learn things by touching the world with your own
hands."He looked up,impatient."But my phone shows me everything,Dad.It's easier,"he
replied.I knew I had to find a way to show him another truth.
A perfect chance came unexpectedly the next weekend. Our washing machine broke down
with a loud noise. When I got a surprisingly high repair quote(报价),an idea hit me.“What if
we fix it by ourselves?"I suggested to Mike.He looked doubtful."Ourselves? We know nothing
about machines!"But I brought out my old toolbox and explained,"We can watch online
tutorials(程)and use these tools to have a try.”“It could be an adventure.”After a long
pause,he finally gave a slow, hesitant nod of agreement.
We moved the heavy machine and saw a confusing network of pipes and wires behind it.And
Mike found a popular repair video on his phone. However, our older machine looked completely
different from the one in the tutorial."None of these parts match!"he said, sounding defeated.I
smiled and encouraged him patiently."Videos give us ideas,"I said,"but every machine is
unique.Let's learn about ours together."He put his phone down, his expression turning
determined as he prepared to look more closely.
