Over the past years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed rail system stands out as clear proof (证明). On December 26, 2025, three new high-speed rail lines — Xi’an-Yan’an, Wuhan-Yichang and Hangzhou-Quzhou — started services. With these new lines, China’s total operating high-speed rail mileage (里程) has passed 50,000 kilometres, which is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world combined.
Today, the high-speed rail network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people’s travel experience. Travelling between cities within 500 kilometres takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometre journey takes about four hours. An average of nearly 10 million passengers take high-speed rail every day. This is a far cry from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only about 60 kilometres per hour.
High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and small towns, driving local tourism and industries. For example, thanks in large part to the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail, Jiangxi Province — located between the two cities — saw a huge increase of 620 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, working together on projects. From importing (引进) technology to becoming a global leader, China’s high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country’s progress, and faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains are being studied for even better development in the future.

A tourism project brought great changes to Nizhuhe Village, a remote and poor village between Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. It has not only greatly improved local educational conditions, but also turned villagers’ hard lives into better ones, showing a warm miracle in the mountain area.
In the past, the village was cut off from the outside world. The only way to go out was the rough and muddy mountain roads. For students like Chen Honghan, the journey to school was extremely dangerous. They had to climb cliffs and walk for three long hours every day. The tiring trip often made them feel tired and even put their lives in danger. Villagers could only depend on traditional farming to make a basic living.
Since 2017, the local eco-cultural tourism project has completely turned over a new leaf. Workers built a scenic bus line, a cliffside lift and a cable car for free. Now Chen’s school trip takes only 30 minutes, which is safe and relaxing. She first rides a 6-minute scenic bus and then takes a lift that climbs 268 metres. Next, she takes a cable car ride that climbs over 200 metres. After a 1-kilometre walk, she arrives at the school in just under 30 minutes. The journey seems like flying through soft clouds: This special “cloud school bus” keeps students away from danger and makes going to school a happy experience.

Self-directed learning is becoming more and more popular among middle school students. It means that learners take control of their own learning instead of only following teachers’ instructions passively.
For self-directed learners, the first step is to set clear goals. You need to know what you want to achieve in a certain period. For example, if you want to improve your English listening, you can set a goal of listening to 15 minutes of English materials every day. Clear goals keep you moving in the right direction.
Second, you need to choose proper learning methods. Different people have different learning habits. Some learn better by reading books, while others learn better by doing practice. You can try different methods and find the one that fits you best.
Third, self-directed learners should know how to check their own progress. You can test yourself from time to time to see how much you have improved. If you find you are not making progress, you can change your learning ways in time.
Self-directed learning is a lifelong skill. It not only helps you get good grades at school, but also prepares you for the future. The world is changing fast, and the ability to learn by yourself will help you keep up with the changes all your life.

Last October, I was waiting for the bus in a station. Beside me sat a young man. When he knew I was Chinese, he asked me something about the Great Wall. I told him, “The Great Wall is more than 20, 000 kilometers long.” The man said, “You don’t say.” I was surprised. “There must be something wrong with him,” I thought. Later, I knew he meant “Really?”
I was once invited to my classmate’s home. His mother said to me, “Break the ice, please.” I wondered, “You didn’t give me any ice.” Later my classmate told me she meant I could make myself relaxed in their home.

When you take notes in your class, are you confident that you’ll actually go back and look over them or do you just write out your notes in class and then completely forget all the information you wrote down? Useful note-taking methods can not only save you precious time and energy but also help you better understand what you learn. One of them is the Cornell note-taking system.
It was first developed in the 1940s by education professor Walter Pauk at Cornell University to help students learn. According to Cornell Notes, each page is divided into three sections: the note-taking column, the cue (提示) column and summary space. It’s very easy. You just need to draw two lines on your note page, leaving a 2.5-inch margin (页边空白) on the left and a 2-inch margin on the bottom. The note-taking column, which is the biggest space, is used to write down notes while you are in class or reading an article. The key point is that you don’t write down what you hear word by word. Instead, use short phrases, symbols or key words to replace long sentences.
After class, you should think of some questions in the cue column according to the notes you’ve written to help you remember as much information as possible. The next step is to cover the note-taking column with a piece of paper or your hand. Then, by only looking at the questions for key words, try to repeat the notes in your own words. The summary is designed to help you reflect on (反思) what you’ve learned. Questions may also be useful. For example, what’s the importance of these facts? What principles are they based on? How can I apply them? You can also write down your own ideas and personal feelings.
Don’t forget to review from time to time so that you will remember the information more easily. After a few months of using this handy note-taking method, you are sure to become the note-taking star of your class!
1.What does the Cornell Notes look like?
A. B. C. D.
2.What are the steps of the Cornell note-taking method?

①Summarize your thoughts and feelings.
②Write some questions in the cue column.
③Put down key words in the note-taking column.

Is there a way to quickly remember more just before an exam? Walking backward might be a good idea. Scientists say this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video in an experiment. After watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first group walked 10 metres forward. The second group walked 10 metres backward. The third group stood still. Scientists then asked them 20 questions about the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers right on average than the other two groups.
This shows that the ideas of time and space are important for making memories. When you walk backward, you look at things from a different view. This difference helps people remember things that happened before more easily. When you walk backward, you need to look more carefully at the things around you to avoid accidents. This sharpens (使敏锐) your senses. As a result, you become more attuned to your environment.
Walking backward is not just good for your brain. It’s also good for the rest of your body. Compared with walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help you improve your fitness because walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里).
Next time you want to improve your memory, why not give walking backward a try? It’s as simple as it sounds, but remember to watch where you’re going and who or what you may knock into.
1.How does the writer start the text?
A.By giving advice. B.By telling a story.
C.By asking a question. D.By giving his opinion.
2.Why does the writer mention the experiment in paragraph 2?
A.To call on more people to volunteer in the walking group.
B.To point out walking backward can keep us healthy and happy.
C.To explain how memories are made in our brain while walking.
D.To show walking backward can help improve short-term memory.
3.What do the underlined words “become more attuned to” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Understand better. B.Get more interested in.
C.Feel more lonely about. D.Become more afraid of.
4.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The advice on keeping healthy.
B.The differences in walking habits.
C.The advantages of walking backward.
D.The importance of improving memory.

Most people hope to have a good memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite (确定的) answer.
★. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy eating habit. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen (氧气) for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become.
Memory skills help you remember things better. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit (数字) telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and last 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string (字符串) of 10 digits. However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learned after one day and then after three days, and then use it as often as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrition (营养) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.

A.3147983689. B.314 | 798 | 3689. C.3147 | 9836 | 89. D.314798 | 3689.
4.Why should we review what we’ve learned regularly?

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I decided to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay, Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead, we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively trying to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
1.Why did Juliet feel down?
A.Because she failed her science test.
B.Because she knew nothing about plants.
C.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
D.Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.
2.In the writer’s opinion, which is the key to the best learning for Juliet?
A.Memorizing. B.Testing. C.Questioning. D.Understanding.
3.What does the underlined phrase “make sense” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Be interesting. B.Be clear. C.Be stupid. D.Be typical.

【导语】本文主要讲述了父亲通过引导女儿Juliet采用“以教促学”的方法复习科学考试,帮助她摆脱死记硬背的苦恼,转而通过主动查阅思考、检验理解来真正掌握知识的生动故事。
1.根据第一段第二句“She jumped in the front seat, feeling down.”以及第二段中Juliet所说的话“‘Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.’”可知,Juliet感到沮丧的原因是她需要背诵关于植物繁殖周期的单元,但自己几乎背不下来,即在识记该单元知识时遇到了困难。
2.第三段中父亲对Juliet建议道:“‘You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.’”,说明在作者看来,死记硬背并非良策,深入去理解学习材料才是取得优异成绩的关键。
3.根据第六段末句“When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.”以及第七段后文“And she was actively trying to test her understanding…She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things…”可知,在父亲的鼓励下,Juliet开始翻书查阅那些她先前不会、尚未明白的内容,从而检验自己的理解程度。由此结合上下文语境推断,画线短语“make sense”在此处指知识点“清楚明白/通俗易懂”。
4.根据第七段中“And she was actively trying to test her understanding…She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.”
Do you think you have a good memory? It is difficult to say exactly what memory is. Even scientists who have been studying memory for many years say that they are still trying to find out what it is. We do know that memory is not just one thing stored (存储) somewhere in the brain. Memory is made up of small pieces of information stored all over the brain.
The human brain is very small and light. But it needs about 20% of the oxygen that our body takes in. We can’t think well if our brain isn’t getting enough oxygen, so always make sure there is enough oxygen in the air when you need to learn or remember something!
Why do you forget things sometimes? The main reason for forgetting something is that you did not learn it well enough in the beginning. For example, if you meet some new people and right away forget their names, it is because you didn’t record the names when you heard them.
No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some ways:
·When you want to remember something, tell a friend about it. This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will help you remember the information.
·Don’t over-train your brain. When you’ve remembered a list of new vocabulary, stop studying. It’s better to study a lot of material for a short time than a small part of material for a lot of time! But remember: you do have to practise your new vocabulary as soon as possible!
·If you want to remember big things, break them down into smaller parts. It’s easier to remember 764598304126 if you break it into four smaller bits: 764-598-304-126.
·If you want to remember a piece of information, but you can’t, don’t get angry. Relax when you study! Try to enjoy yourself. You are learning new things every minute. You will remember better if you are happy and relaxed.
In short, none of the ways can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful.

In most people, learning and thinking begin to decline (衰退) after the age of 30 or 40. People start to perform worse in tests of thinking abilities. But what if it is only something more like the “summer slide”? Every year, summer vacations lead to some children’s study losses.
A group of researchers from the University of California suggest that the break of learning is a problem for adults too.
In a three-month research project, they provided a learning environment to 33 older adults. They were between 58 and 86 years of age. Before and after the project, the researchers tested their thinking abilities, including attention and working memory. Older adults in this program were asked to have three classes to learn three new skills. Courses included singing, drawing, iPad use, photography and Spanish language learning. Three months later, people had greatly improved their scores for memory and attention.
In a follow-up study, the researchers discovered that the participants had not only developed their skills but had improved further. In other words, after having three courses, these older adults seemed to improve their thinking abilities to levels similar to those of college students.
“Use it or lose it,” the saying goes. The project gives us a lesson: decline, as we so often see it, may not be unavoidable.

★ In 2024, about 300,000 tourists visited the village, bringing a profit of nearly 20 million yuan. Many villagers opened farmstays, small shops and coffee shops. Some people who worked in big cities returned home to start their own businesses. Local infrastructure (基础设施) was improved a lot, with cleaner roads and better public services. What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!
Bertozzi won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Barry Sharpless (US) and Morten Meldal (Denmark) in 2022. She won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells (细胞). She has found a smart way to connect cells by connecting their sugar coats. The cells then have a green color so that scientists can see clearly where they are and how they move. According to the University of California, Berkeley, this finding has quite a good influence on medicine.
Except for doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a vivid life. She was a keyboarder (键盘手) in a rock band. “I even used to think about making music my major (专业),” she said. She also played soccer and won a scholarship in sports from Harvard.
As a female scientist, Bertozzi tries to encourage female students. She started a monthly get-together for all the women students. In 2022, Bertozzi won an award for this.

Last term, my English was really poor. I spent hours memorizing words every day, but I still forgot them quickly. When I had English tests, I always got low marks and felt upset.
One day, my English teacher talked to me. She told me not to just memorize words by heart. Instead, I should use them in sentences and short passages. She also suggested that I listen to English songs and watch short English videos for 15 minutes every day.
I followed her advice. Every morning, I wrote three sentences with the new words I learned. After school, I listened to my favourite English songs and repeated the lyrics. At weekends, I watched funny English cartoons and tried to understand the dialogues.
After two months, something amazing happened. I could remember words much better, and I even started to talk about my hobbies in English. In the latest test, I got an A! I realized that smart learning is better than hard learning without a plan.

I had learned English for 11 years, but I knew few English idioms (习语) . When I went to study in America last year, I had trouble communicating with Americans at times.
One day, I asked my roommate Kevin, “Shall we play soccer tomorrow?” He answered, “Let’s play it by ear.” I was so puzzled (迷惑的) . “Ear can play soccer?” I asked. He explained, “It means let’s see how things go. The weather report says tomorrow is rainy.”
From then on, I realized English idioms had special meanings. It was wrong to translate them word by word.

If you are looking for good ways to learn English well, you will be disappointed because I don’t really think there are any.
Like a lot of Chinese students, I started learning English as soon as I entered middle school. I was interested in learning this foreign language because I was good at it and this made me feel very happy. However, my interest in English learning didn’t last long. Once I got into high school, English made me confused because I couldn’t stand the boring grammar points. Soon, I lost interest in English and my English became very poor.
But English music gave me the confidence to learn this second language. One day I bought an English magazine. There was a tape in it. It recorded (录制) several English songs and collected some fun articles (文章). The moment I listened to the songs recorded in the tape, I fell in love with English music. Also, I could read some interesting articles in the magazine to get to know the fantastic culture of English-speaking countries.
Soon I decided to pick up my English. In order to learn it well, I did many grammar and reading exercises. At the same time I kept my habit of listening to English music and reading English magazines. My grades in English tests improved little by little.
