Celebrate the beauty of Lantern Festival
Many traditional Chinese festivals remind us of the aromas (芳香) of special foods. As zongzi are to Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes are to Mid-Autumn Festival, yuanxiao—sweet dumplings made of sticky rice—are special to Lantern Festival.
Lantern Festival falls on the 15th of the first lunar month, marking the end of the Spring Festival celebrations. This year, it falls on March 2.
Besides the round-shaped yuanxiao, another beloved part of the celebration is the lanterns, which come in almost every possible size and shape. In old times, riddles were put up onto them so that people could try to solve them while looking at the beauty of the lanterns. However, both tradition and handicraft (手工艺品) have become less popular among young people.
Lantern Festival was at its height in the Tang and Song dynasties (朝代). It was a day of great fun back then. In the evening, people went into the streets with all kinds of lanterns, watching lion or dragon dances, eating yuanxiao and setting off firecrackers (鞭炮).
The festival also offers a chance to unmarried (未婚的) young girls to go out freely in search of their true love, since they weren’t normally allowed to do so. The famous Song Dynasty poet (诗人) Ouyang Xiu recorded this romantic tradition with the well-known line: “Atop the willow tree hangs the moon; my date comes in the evening soon.”
1.Besides eating yuanxiao, what other tradition is popular during Lantern Festival?
A.Setting off fireworks. B.Solving riddles on lanterns.

2.During which dynasties was the Lantern Festival most popular?

C.Explanation and education. D.Food and drink.
4.Why did unmarried young girls go out during the festival in ancient (古代的) times?
A.To admire their stars. B.To become a poet.
C.To search for true love. D.To enjoy nice food.
5.How do you translate the underlined (划线的) sentence in the last paragraph (段落)?
A.月上柳梢头,人约黄昏后。 B.床前明月光,疑是地上霜。
C.海上生明月,天涯共此时。 D.明月几时有,把酒问青天。

To talk about food and eating is to talk about a common subject like sleeping or breathing. But most of us don’t think about food until we start feeling hungry. 1
However, what, where, when and how we eat say a lot about who we are. Do you eat rice or noodles? Do you use chopsticks? Do you eat with your mouth open wide? 2 Even when we are not trying to say anything, food and the ways we eat in some ways tell who and what we are.
Most people think what they eat and the ways they eat are normal (正常的), while others are a bit strange if they don’t eat the same food or eat in the same way. 3 As we all know, we often cook tomatoes with eggs and we eat noodles at birthdays. These social habits are neither accidental nor personal. We learn our eating habits very early in life and our childhood foods probably have a special meaning for us forever. That’s because they are connected with the people and the things we love. 4
People often use food and eating to mark the seasons such as eating dumplings at winter solstice (冬至). Also, holidays are chances for special foods. 5 For example, at the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese eat moon cakes as a symbol of getting together.
As you can see, food and eating have something to do with people’s shared experiences. They mark both customs and cultures in some ways.
A.So it does not receive much notice.
B.What you eat can tell how healthy you are.
C.All these eating habits send messages about you.
D.Parents often ask us to cook food when they are busy.
E.In fact, choices in foods are fixed and shaped by customs.
F.Sometimes, people even explain why they eat certain things on these days.
G.Mum’s spring rolls and Dad’s tasty fish bring up feelings of love and comfort.
