China has a long history of more than five thousand years and is famous for its great ancient inventions all over the world. Among the Four Great Inventions of ancient China, papermaking plays one of the most important roles and has greatly influenced the whole world’s cultural development.
Before paper was invented in ancient times, Chinese people had to write words on heavy bamboo slips, wooden boards or hard stone walls. Bamboo slips were too heavy for people to carry around easily, and it needed a lot of bamboo materials. Stone writing was even harder to make and impossible to move. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, a great man named Cai Lun made a huge improvement to papermaking technology. He used cheap and common materials such as tree bark, old broken cloth, fishing nets and plant fibers to make new paper. The paper he invented was light in weight, low in cost, easy to write on and simple to produce in large numbers. Soon this kind of paper became popular across the whole country and replaced bamboo slips little by little.
After papermaking spread to other countries and areas around the world, it helped human knowledge, stories and culture spread much faster and farther than before. It made reading and writing easier for common people and pushed the development of education and culture all over the world. Even in modern society, we still use paper in our study, work and daily life every day. Papermaking is not only a great ancient invention, but also a precious cultural treasure that we should always remember and respect.

Part 1: Read and Explore
History is full of young inventors. For example, Lu Ban came up with the idea of the ruler in his childhood. Benjamin Franklin invented swim flippers (脚蹼) at the age of 12. Last year, 6-year-old Kate Smith created her invention for baby medical treatment. The stories of the young inventors remind people of children’s great creativity. Scientists agree that children are more creative than adults, and they have the power to create new things.
Every invention starts with a wish to explore (探索). Children have a spirit of discovery, which drives them to ask questions, explore problems, and try to solve them. Lily Peterson, at the age of 9, created the ice cream stick just because she wanted to hold her cold ice cream without mess. But the simple invention has changed the way we eat ice cream, making it easier and more enjoyable for people of all ages.
What’s more, children can learn things quickly and like turning new knowledge into practice. They are not afraid to try out their ideas, and at the same time, they enjoy the sense of pride. It makes them take an active part in scientific experiment (实验) and create unexpected ideas.
Children’s ability to create is really valuable. Adults should encourage them and provide them with chances to explore the world. By doing so, children can help to make the world around them better.
