Super-agers are special people. They are 80 years old or older, but they have amazing memories. Their ability to remember things is like those 20 to 30 years 1 .
Super-agers are very different from each other. They don’t all eat the same food or do the same 2 . But scientists found one thing they all share. They think social relationships are very important. Most super-agers are also outgoing people who like being with others.
This discovery isn’t a big 3 for brain scientists. People who spend time with others are more protected from memory problems as they get older. They also have bigger brains.
Scientists think socializing helps protect the brain. When people are lonely, their body makes stress hormones (应激激素). If stress hormones stay high for a long time, they can cause swelling (肿胀) in the brain. This can 4 brains and cause memory loss.
A.key B.positive C. completely D.mainly E. work out
Almost all 80-year-olds may have brain disease, but super-agers have very little. Scientists who study healthy 100-year-olds say they are also outgoing and have a/an 5 attitude about life.
However, there is still a question. Do people socialize more because they have good memories? Or does socializing give people better memories? Scientists are still trying to 6 the answer.
Scientists believe that genetics (遗传学) and biology are the 7 reasons for becoming a super-ager. Although being social helps protect the brain, you probably can’t become a super-ager just by spending more time with people. The amazing memory ability seems to come 8 from the genes you are born with.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
We all know exercise is important, but we don’t always want to do it! 1 But we should try our best to exercise every day.
Exercise is good for our body. When we exercise, our body changes. Exercise develops our muscles (肌肉) and makes us stronger. When we exercise, we use energy. This keeps our weight down. Being overweight puts stress on our body. 2 And it can even cause more serious problems such as heart disease later in life.
Exercise is also great for our brain. During exercise, our heart beats faster and we breathe harder. Our brain gets more oxygen (氧气) because of this, and that helps our memory improve. Scientists also tell us the body makes more of certain chemicals (化学物质) after exercise. 3 So, when you have trouble with your homework, do some exercise, then try again!
4 When we exercise, our brain makes special chemicals. These chemicals can relax our body and calm our mind. Feeling fit can also make us feel better and more confident in ourselves. When we play a sport with others, we can even make new friends.
Remember: Health is wealth. The more you exercise, the healthier you become. Try to make exercise a part of your life.
A.Exercise also makes us happier.
B.Often we are too busy or feel lazy.
C.There are many reasons to exercise.
D.This helps us to learn and think well.
E.It can cause pain in our back and knees.
七、阅读理解。
New research shows the brain has the ability to function well in old age. The secret? Keep learning.
“Learning is the method for development no matter how old you are,” said Rachel Wu, a professor of psychology (心理学)at the University of California Riverside and the author of research. Wu’s study took an ambitious approach (目标宏大的方案): have seniors in their 60s, 70s and 80s involve themselves in a college-like atmosphere, taking three courses at the same time. They took part in at least 15 hours of class a week and also did homework, over three months. Classes included Spanish language, music composition, painting, and instruction on using an iPad. After six weeks, the participants’ (参与者的) test scores for thinking and memory were similar to middle-aged adults’—a great improvement over their scores before the study began. That is, their brains functioned (运作) more like those of a person 30 years younger.
It’s important to note that the study included just 42 participants (参与者) who were all healthy and were encouraged to learn. Still, outside experts like Dr. Laurie Archbald-Pannone call the findings important and optimistic.
“Aging is not a disease. It’s part of the normal process of life,” Archbald-Pannone said. “The brain may work differently, but it matters much to keep the brain functioning actively.”
One participant, James Ryan, 72, signed up for the study because he was longing to have a sharp mind after stopping work. He was not concerned about the Spanish class. The iPad class did not worry him, either, because he’d spent 50 years working with computers. But without much art experience, the drawing classes were frightening. “I thought I would embarrass (使尴尬) myself,” Ryan said. He was wrong.
“I found out I can paint! I was surprised,” Ryan said.
What’s more, Ryan’s confidence in learning carried on after the study ended. Now when something around the house breaks, he goes on YouTube to figure out how to fix it. That’s something Ryan says he would not have done before.
1.What can we learn from the results of Wu’s study?
A.Learning makes old people’s brains work better.
B.The older people are, the better their brains will work.
C.Old people can learn three foreign languages at the same time.
D.Old people can improve their thinking and memory easily in 12 weeks.
2.Which of the following can best describe Wu’s study?
A.It was small but meaningful. B.It was traditional but creative.
C.It was creative but impractical. D.It was practical but meaningless.
3.What does Dr. Archbald-Pannone think of aging?
A.It brings trouble and bad experiences. B.It is a problem that is hard to deal with.
C.It can be completely stopped by humans. D.It is a totally natural and changeable process.
4.What can we know about James Ryan?
A.He found the iPad class very challenging.
B.He had rich art experience before the study.
C.He stopped learning new skills after his stopping work.
D.He became more willing to learn new things after the study.
5.What is the best title for the text?
A.Different Courses for Seniors’ Retirement (退休)Life
B.James Ryan’s Experience in Learning New Skills
C.A Study on Middle-Aged Adults’ Learning Ability
D.Learning Helps Seniors Keep Brain Functioning Well

Part 1: Read and Explore
Have you ever been full of curiosity (好奇心) about the world and always liked to ask “why” when you were a child? Curiosity is the drive to explore and learn.
Curiosity helps the brain to take in new information. For students, curiosity is like a mind superpower. At the same time, curiosity is also a process of actively looking for answers. When you're truly curious about a topic, it becomes easier and more effective for your brain to take in and keep new information.
Curiosity also leads to more exciting ideas. Curiosity encourages students to go beyond “what is taught” and ask “what if”. Instead of simply accepting information, a curious student studies it and looks at it from different sides. This habit of thinking leads to more interesting ideas because it connects knowledge from different subjects.
Curiosity encourages active learning and helps discover your career interests. When Qian Xuesen was young, he was curious about why paper planes could fly and how to make them fly farther. Driven by this curiosity, he worked hard and became a great scientist. This curiosity about one thing will keep you learning, and maybe that interest will shape your future career.
So how to develop your curiosity? One effective method is to ask open-ended (开放式的) questions. For example, instead of asking, “Did you enjoy the training?”, one might ask, “Which aspects of the training did you find most interesting?” Looking for new ideas is another important strategy (策略) for developing curiosity. Besides, jumping out of one's comfort zone (舒适区) is also important for developing curiosity.
As Richard Feynman said, “Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.” Therefore, keep a curious mind. You never know where it may lead you!
