Read it again, and you will understand it better.(读一遍又一遍,理解更深刻) 2. Reread where you get stuck. (卡住之处,请回头重读) When you have a question or can’t understand something while reading, you need to stop and reread certain parts of the text. Reading Strategies Rereading 当你阅读时遇到问题或者有不理解的内容,你需要停下来,重读文中的某些段落。 Activity 1 Read the text and learn how to use rereading strategy. Philo Farnsworth was an American inventor. From an early age, he showed great interest in television. He believed that machines were too slow to work with pictures. Only an electronic system could do that fast enough. In 1927, he invented the all-electronic television system. Where I stopped: “could do that fast enough” What question I ask myself: What does “that” mean? What I reread: “too slow to work with pictures” What I know now: “do that” means “__________”. work with pictures Where I stopped What question I ask myself What I reread What I know now Summarize steps of rereading. Activity 2 Read the text and complete the steps of using rereading strategy. Can you explain how a discovery is different from an invention? Take Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America and Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb as examples. Columbus discovered the land, but the land existed long before he found it. However, in Edison’s case, there was no light bulb in the world before Edison created it. Now, do you see the difference? Where I stopped: What question I ask myself: Can you explain how a discovery is different from an invention? What is the difference between discovery and invention? What I reread: Now I understand: Columbus discovered land, but the land existed long before he found it. However, in Edison’s case, there was no light bulb in the world before Edison created it. Discovery—people find things that already exist; Invention—people create new things. Activity 3 Pair work. Explain how a discovery is different from an invention based on Activity 2. A: Hi! Do you know the two words discovery and invention? B: Hi! I’ve read about them, but I can’t tell them apart clearly. Could you help me? A: Of course. A discovery means you find something that is already there. B: Like Columbus finding America, right? A: Exactly! The land existed long before Columbus arrived. B: OK. Then what is an invention? A: An invention is creating something new that didn’t exist before. Just like Edison’s light bulb. B: Oh, I see. So discovery finds old things, and invention makes new things. A: You are right! B: Thanks a lot for your help. A: You’re welcome. Language points 1.
