A Story of Misunderstanding (误解)
The "Thumbs-Up" That Got Him Arrested(逮捕)
In 1998, an American couple was driving in New Zealand. They missed a stop sign and were pulled over by a police officer. The officer gave them a warning. Feeling grateful, the husband gave the officer a friendly "thumbs-up" gesture. To their shock, the officer immediately arrested(逮捕) him!
Why? Because in New Zealand, the "thumbs-up" sign is considered a very rude(粗鲁的) gesture.
This shows how a simple gesture can lead to a huge misunderstanding when we don't know the local culture.

Let's start with a lead-in. Look at these beautiful pictures on the screen. They show famous landmarks from different countries. Can you name them? And do you know what languages are spoken in these countries?
