【答案】Para 1
But his glasses came off when he fell in the water. Harry and Joel waded back into the river. Twigs and leaves swirled around their ankles before floating away on the current. No glasses! Harry thought they might have been swept downstream, without which Mr. Taylor couldn’t see. Everything was a blur to him now. How could they get home? “Oh great! Now we’re lost,” groaned Joel,"and it might be days before someone finds us.” "No thanks to you.” Harry blamed.
Para 2
"Just calm down." Mr. Taylor shouted, "Without my glasses, we need to work together to find our way." Mr. Taylor fumbled in his backpack and pulled the map and the compass out. Luckily, Joel learned how to read a map from his books, and Harry knew how to use a compass from his hiking club. They stopped arguing, looked down at the map, so that they searched for the river and used the compass to find the direction. In relief, Mr. Taylor beamed proudly, "You two will save the day. You’re pretty good hiking partners!”

【答案】The big race came the next day. Sarah stood on the sidelines, cheering louder than anyone. When Maya got the baton for the final leg, Sarah screamed, “Go, Maya! You’ve got this!” Maya ran with all her heart, remembering Sarah’s trust in her. They finished third — not first, but with their best time all season! After the race, Sarah ran to hug Maya. “You are amazing!” she said, her eyes shining. “I’m so proud of you!”
Maya smiled, “I wouldn’t have done it without your trust.” Sarah realized then that true teamwork wasn’t just about running your fastest — it was about knowing when to pass the position. She might not have run the race, but she’d helped win it in a different way. Coach Davis put a hand on each girl’s shoulder, “Today you both showed what real champions are made of — courage, trust, and putting the team first. That’s worth more than any trophy.”

【答案】Para l: Then Kelly began her training, keeping it a secret from her mom. Every day after school, Kelly dashed to the boxing gym, occupying herself with the intense training. Even when she was made fun of by boys in the gym, she bit her lip tightly and continued her training. Finally, the tryout came. Extremely nervous though, she stepped into the boxing ring, moved fast and punched hard to the surprise of other candidates. After the tryout, Kelly left the gym confidently, knowing she did her best.
Para 2: The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. To her delight, Kelly found her name on the list. At dinner that day, Kelly gathered her courage and said to her mom, “I'm sorry, Mom. I've made the boxing team and I'm ready to carve my own path.” At first, a flicker of disbelief and shock crossed her mom's face, but after a long, heart-to-heart talk, she gave Kelly a bear hug and whispered softly, “I'm so proud of you for being yourself. ”

【答案】As Miya waited behind the curtain for her turn to perform, nervousness started to grow inside her. She kept repeating her lines in a low voice and she even found herself trembling. She regretted having accepted the role, wishing in some way that she could escape. Then she heard someone telling her to get ready and the curtain in front of her was pulled. Miya heard applauds from the audience but she just found it impossible to open her mouth and move her legs. She stood there, unable to say a word. The three boys looked at her anxiously and there was silence among the audience.
Miya was about to cry, when she saw John, who played one of the three boys, coming up to her. He bent over her, patted her on the back, saying, “Hi, buddy. We are hungry. Can you tell us where we can get some food?” Without realizing how she made it, Miya replied, “Would you like to come with me? Mom is making corn bread. It’s the most delicious in the world.” With great delight, the three boys accepted Miya’s invitation and followed her to the “farm”. The drama show was a great success. Miya was grateful to John for his clever response and she finally got an idea of what to write about for her composition.

【答案】Upon returning to the village, Steven immediately started to solve the problem. He gathered the villagers and presented his innovative plan to construct a multifunctional dam, which could conserve rainwater as well as provide a reliable water source during periods of drought. Although some villagers were initially skeptical, Steven’s enthusiasm and determination convinced them of the project’s importance. Meanwhile, he organized a team to create a detailed proposal and budget for the dam construction, which they planned to submit to the local government for funding and support.
After knowing the project, all the villagers joined in the construction of the dam. Everyone generously contributed their time, labor, and resources to ensure the success of the dam project. The villagers worked tirelessly, devoting themselves to the construction of the dam. Within just a few months, their efforts bore fruit and the dam was completed. The dam not only successfully saved the rain water but also could pump water to irrigate the field during the dry season. With the toughest problem solved, both Steven and the villagers saw their wish come true.

【答案】On Monday morning, Leo came to school early, carrying the comic he had drawn. He carried a large paper roll under his arm. When Kenji entered the classroom, Leo walked over to him. “I’m sorry for what I did last week,” Leo said quietly. He unrolled the paper — it was a big comic strip showing Kenji as a hero with blue hair helping other students. “I drew this for you.” Kenji looked at the drawings. He saw himself helping others in the comic. Slowly, he smiled. “I like drawing too,” he replied.
Just then, Mr. Reed entered and saw the two boys looking at the superhero comic together. “It looks like you’ve found something to share,” he said happily. Leo turned to the class. “I want to say sorry to Kenji. My joke wasn’t funny.” The classroom was quiet. Then one student started clapping. Soon, everyone was clapping. After that day, Leo and Kenji became good friends. They started a comic club where students drew stories about kindness. The class learned that everyone is different, and we need to respect each other.

【答案】Lily felt her heart race as she realized what might have happened. Taking a deep breath, she told the truth and said to Peter, “I think I accidentally broke your pen. I shouldn’t have touched it without your permission. I’m really sorry.” Lily also apologized to Mary for it was she who made Mary misunderstood. The classroom fell silent as everyone turned to look at Lily. Her face turned red, but before she could continue, the math teacher walked in.
Smith, having heard Lily’s confession(坦白), praised her honesty. “It takes courage to admit a mistake,” Smith said, smiling at Lily. Peter, though upset about his broken pen, chose to forgive Lily for he knew it was an accident. Mary, relieved, gave Lily a grateful hug. Later, Lily promised to save her pocket money to buy Peter a new pen. From that day on, Lily’s classmates admired her even more for her honesty and kindness.

I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, and started driving home. After getting home, he noticed my depression and asked me what was wrong. I explained the whole thing. “Well, what are you going to do about it? Are you just going to sit here?” he asked. Surprised, I just shook my head and went into my room. Soon I realized nobody would give me a spot on the team. I’d have to earn it. I decided to work toward my goal of making the team.
The next day, after school, I immediately biked to a gym near my school. And I trained there for two hours. I ran, shot until I collapsed on the floor every single day. There were moments when I didn’t think I could keep on going, but I survived. After almost a year of practicing and training, I tried out for the school team again. The next day, seeing my name printed in large letters, I felt as though all my dreams came true in one wonderful moment.

“Mind? Please sit with me!” Theresa thought and quickly replied, “not at all.” “This is usually where we sit for lunch, and since we saw you at the bus stop this morning, it must be fate or something,” said the other girl. “Maybe we’re supposed to be friends.” Theresa also expressed her willingness to be their friends. And with that, new friendships were formed. Through the whole lunch they chatted about their classes and giggled about various stories. The three girls agreed to head home together at the end of the day as they parted for the afternoon class.
For Theresa, the ride home was quite a bit different from the bus trip that morning. She now had people to sit with and new friends to talk to. She was not alone any more. The time went by much more quickly than the ride to school in that morning. The girls talked and laughed the entire way back to their neighborhood. They got off the bus and began the walk to their own houses. One by one, they said their goodbyes and exchanged quick hugs followed by a “See you tomorrow.”

Lucas gave the boy two dollars and walked the boy back to his house. After walking in silence for a while, the boy decided to ask Lucas why he was so angry just now. Lucas explained that the snowstorm had ruined his roof, and he had no time or money to fix it. The boy understood that Lucas was simply having a bad day. They got the goods to the boy’s grandmother safe and sound. The boy’s grandma and their neighbours were appreciative when they received the goods.
The next day, while wondering how to fix the roof, Lucas suddenly heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, Lucas saw the boy and his neighbours on his doorstep. They entered the house and worked together to fix Lucas’ broken roof. Lucas was touched by the boy and his community’s kindness and generosity. He never realized that his lending the boy a helping hand the day before would lead him to a lifelong connection with strangers who eventually turned into friends.

【答案】Also at that time, a familiar scene with my little son appeared in my head. Decades ago, when my son was Theodore’s age, he’d spent hours sorting balls by size—something I thought pointless then. I would take the balls away, urging him to practice counting instead, while he would become quiet, his joy fading away. Back then, I thought I was helping him “learn”. Seeing Theodore ignored my shape toy to focus on his rings, I felt guilty. I’d rushed my son to follow my idea of“useful” learning, just like I was doing to Theodore.
Turning to look at Theodore, I realized I had to make a change. I set the shape-sorting toy aside, picked up a ring, and dropped it on the floor. “Look, it bounces” I said. Theodore’s eyes lit up, and he handed me another ring. We took turns dropping rings, laughing as some rolled and some stayed put. No lessons, no plans—just following his lead. At that moment, I understood: parenting isn’t about forcing“useful” things. It’s about letting kids just be kids—a lesson I wish I’d learned when my son was young.

【答案】Looking into the woman’s teary eyes, Alan understood and walked into the house. It was poorly lit, narrow and damp. An undernourished boy came into his eyes, beaming from ear to ear while working busily with flour at hand. He looked up and saw Alan, who immediately explained, “Hey, I am Alan. I come to say Happy Birthday to you as I am patrolling this neighborhood.” The boy exclaimed in delight, “Thank you, Sir.” Alan stepped out, handed Clara a twenty dollar bill, and smiled, “Would you help me buy a nice birthday gift to your son now since I am still on duty?” Then he stated to Bob they should not arrest Clara.
Bob nodded thoughtfully and asked, “What about the things she stole?” As Alan saw Clara’s bean-pole figure gone into the distance, he answered in a firm voice, “I will help cover the loss of the shop.” On hearing this, Bob felt embarrassed, twisting and rubbing his hands over and over again seemingly to get warm in this freezing December. Finally, he gathered his courage, “Buddy, I can also help. Let me pay for them as my Christmas gift to the mother and her child.” Staring into Bob’s eyes, Alan saw the genuine kindness glistening with little soft snowflakes falling down from the sky, white and pure.

【答案】It was my mum! And still with her one eye! Her hair was gray and messy, clothes patched and dusty. She clutched a cloth bag, her one eye filled with longing. Embarrassment surged — how could she ruin my perfect life? “What are you doing here?” I snapped. She trembled, whispering, “I saved up to see you… brought your favorite candies.” I stepped back coldly, “Leave! You’ll embarrass me!” Tears rolled down her cheek as she handed me a crumpled letter, then stumbled away, thin figure fading.
Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me. It said she lost her eye saving me from a car crash at five, hiding the truth to spare my guilt. She worked day and night at the flea market to fund my studies, proud of my success. “Just wanted to see you one last time,” it ended. I rushed to the flea market, but her shop was empty — she’d passed away the next day. I knelt, hugging the candies and letter, drowned in regret. Her “embarrassing” eye was the most selfless love.

Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I felt extremely excited that I was the only fan who got the priceless opportunity. I admired Raine very much and was eager to stay with her a little longer. On the other hand, I was scared of riding a roller coaster. The thought of having a try nearly pushed me to the verge of collapse. However, I must take the chance and it didn’t take much time to make my final decision. Mustering my courage, I nodded firmly and went to the roller coaster with her.
My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?” “Yes,” I answered without hesitation. She was rather surprised, with her mouth open and eyes widened. After all, she had spent years trying to persuade me but in vain. Fears of heights and moving too fast seemed unimportant to me now. Although I screamed during the entire time like a girl being chased by a hungry wolf, spending a good time with my idol made all of it worthwhile and my fear was miraculously overcome. And since then, I have lived in a world where I am a bit braver.

Mr. Taylor checked again: water, food, bandage, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.
Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely, he whispered to himself unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.
Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(喷雾防虫剂).Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).
“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?” their father said. "You’re missing all of the beautiful scenery!"
It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn’t looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn’t paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.
“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed. "That’s not true!” Joel shouted back.
Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. "And both of you need to stop arguing!" he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path,
Harry and Joel raced to their father’s assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.
Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

Sarah, usually energetic before races, sat weakly on the bench. She looked pale. A stomach illness had hit her family, and she was still sick.
Coach Davis stood beside her. “Sarah, can you run the anchor leg (最后一棒) tomorrow? It’s the most important job, but you are sick.” The anchor leg runner finishes the race, and Sarah was their fastest runner.
Sarah breathed hard. “I... I have to, Coach. The team needs me.” But her voice shook, and sweat shone on her forehead.
Nearby, Maya watched, her hands tight. She ran the third leg well but wasn’t the fastest. Seeing Sarah so sick worried her. What if Sarah got worse?
In the locker room after practice, Maya sat next to Sarah. “Hey,” she said gently, “how are you really feeling?”
Sarah looked down at her shaking hands. “Not great,” she admitted. “But I can’t let everyone down. The team is counting on me.”
Maya took a deep breath. “I know you want to help, but what if running makes you worse? Maybe... maybe someone else should run the anchor leg this time?”
Sarah’s eyes were filled with tears, “But who? It has to be someone fast.”
“I could try,” Maya offered quietly. “I’ve been practicing hard. And Coach could help me prepare.”
Sarah stared at her, “You’d really do that?”
Maya nodded firmly, “Of course! We’re teammates. That’s what teammates do — we help each other when we need it most.”
Coach Davis, who had been listening nearby, walked over. “Sarah, Maya makes a good point. Running while sick could hurt your health and the team’s chances. Sometimes the bravest thing is knowing when to step back. Don’t worry, the backup will take Maya’s place.”
Sarah wiped her eyes. It was the hardest decision she’d ever made.
“You’re right,” she finally said, her voice thick with emotion. “Maya, I trust you. You’ll be a great anchor leg.” Maya laughed and hugged her friend. “I’ll run like you’re right beside me!”

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring (拳击赛场). She was deeply impressed by how hard they hit and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase: BOXING CLUB TRYOUT (选拔). That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve (开辟) her own path.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right? Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted, “and what exactly does ‘only for boys’ mean, anyway? Boxing is a sport for everyone!”
Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork (步法) and punching (击打) abilities with other candidates (候选人). Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made up her mind to stick with her choice.

Third Grader Miya was sitting by the desk thinking about her composition. At the end of each year, the students will be given a writing task about the person(s) he/she is most thankful to. Miya could remember she wrote about her parents, who loved her and took care of her in grade one and her teacher, who encouraged her to be brave to raise questions in grade two. This year, she was supposed to write about somebody else. But who? The composition will be due next week. Miya racked her brains (绞尽脑汁) but still had no idea.
Looking up from her empty composition paper, Miya noticed that the other students were collecting their books and getting ready to go home. She decided to give up thinking and get on her way back home. Who knows? Maybe a good idea might come to her mind the next day.
Just at that time, John ran into the classroom and came up to Miya. John is head of the school drama club, in which Miya is a new member.
“Miya, I would like you to play a role in the drama show.” said John.
Miya agreed gladly. She loved drama and had always been dreaming of making her appearance on the stage.
Then John introduced the drama to her. It was about the adventure of three boys to the wild west. Miya was supposed to play a small role, a farm girl who discovered the hungry boys, invited them to the farm and treated them with corn bread.
She was to appear at the ending part of the drama and her lines were short and easy: Hi, buddies. You look weak. Would you like to come with me? Mom is making corn bread. It’s the most delicious in the world. Surely Miya wouldn’t have any problem remembering them. Everything went on well and the big day arrived three days later.
The drama show attracted a large audience. The hall was crowded with excited students and teachers. The three older boys went on stage and started their “adventure” to the wild west.

Miya was about to cry, when she saw John, who played one of the three boys, coming up to her.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A group of poor people live in a village of Africa. The people there relied on corn farming for their livelihood. However, the harsh natural conditions often resulted in poor harvests. Droughts were the biggest challenge, while sudden downpours during the rainy season would flood the fields. Despite these difficulties, there was a young boy in the village named Steven who had a deep love for science. He dreamed of using knowledge to change the fate of his community.
From a young age, the boy was fascinated by the wonders of science. He spent his days exploring the world around him, eager to know its mysteries. While other children played in the fields, he could be found conducting “experiments” and thinking about his future under the shade of a tree. He wanted to develop a dam to store rainwater and then pump (用泵抽运) the water from the dam to water the corn when there would be a drought. But to build the dam was a big problem.
His passion for learning was undeniable, but his father, a traditionalist who valued hard work above all else, did not understand or support his son’s ambition at first. To him, the only real way to help the family was through manual labor on the farm.
Despite his father’s disapproval, Steven remained determined in his pursuit of knowledge. Steven believed that education held the key to a better future, not just for himself but for the entire village. Seeing his son’s firm determination, the father changed his mind. The father realized that perhaps there was more to life than working in the fields. With a heavy heart, he emptied his savings to send Steven to school, hoping that one day his son would make his own dream come true.
Years passed, and Steven tirelessly worked on his studies. His efforts paid off when he graduated with top honors from university. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a burning desire to make a difference, he returned to his village with a mission.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One morning, Mr. Reed introduced Kenji to his fifth-grade class. The boy’s bright blue hair stood straight up, making him look both unique and nervous. He kept his eyes low, fingers tightly holding the shirt. Some kids whispered and others stared. “Take the seat beside, Leo,” Mr. Reed said gently, pointing to a boy in the back who was busy drawing. Leo looked up, and a playful smile formed as he noticed Kenji’s hair.
At lunch, Leo couldn’t resist. He jumped up and stood near Kenji’s desk. “Listen, everyone!” he called out loudly. “Meet our new superhero—Blue Lightning!” He pointed right at Kenji’s hair. “Can you light up the room with that?” The class burst into laughter. Kenji’s face turned red. He felt everyone’s eyes on him, and his heart beat fast. Without a word, he rushed out to Mr. Reed’s office, tears building in his eyes.
Mr. Reed offered Kenji some warm milk. “Your hair is special,” he said in a kind voice. “Being different is a good thing.” Later, Mr. Reed called Leo and talked with him. “Jokes should not hurt others,” he said seriously. “Laughing at someone can leave a deep hurt.” Leo nodded, but he still felt a little defensive. He was just trying to be funny.
That afternoon, Leo saw Kenji walking home alone, head down. Leo remembered the sad look on Kenji’s face when everyone laughed. For the first time, he realized his joke wasn’t fun for everyone. Leo loved drawing and making people smile, but he never meant to make someone feel so small. All weekend, he thought about what he had done — and how he could make it right.

Lily was a 10-year-old student. She was always ready to help others. Most importantly, she was honest.
One day, when Lily entered the classroom, she saw a crowd looking at something. Lily joined them and found that Peter, her classmate, was showing his newly bought pen to other students. The pen was special and everyone was talking about it cheerfully.
Lily was really fond of that pen. She even asked Peter where he bought the pen and she intended to buy one. However, such a pen was too expensive for her — she could only earn her pocket money by helping do housework at home. At that time, the school bell rang. Immediately, all the children rushed to the playground to do morning exercises.
When Lily ran out of the classroom, Smith, their math teacher, asked Lily to get some chalk from the classroom. Lily went back to the classroom and found Peter's pen on his desk. She couldn’t help walking to the pen. While Lily was admiring the pen, she heard Smith call her out. In a hurry, she dropped the pen on the floor. She quickly picked it up, put it back and went to give the chalk to Smith. Before Lily ran to the playground, she saw her classmate Mary coming back to the classroom as she was ill.
After the morning exercises, everyone went back to the classroom. Just then Peter found his pen was broken and asked who was in the classroom at the time of doing morning exercises. Almost everyone pointed to Mary. When asked whether she had broken Peter’s pen, Mary said no. However, no one could prove her words. Feeling sad, she started to cry.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My knees started shaking. Anxiously, I looked through the list posted on the wall of the locker room (更衣室). As I saw all my friends’ names on that list but couldn’t find mine, I was extremely disappointed.
I thought there was a mistake. So I walked up to the coach. “Mr. Brown, are you sure that the list you posted is correct?” I asked nervously. “Yes, the names on the list are finalized. If you didn’t make it this year, there is a chance next year,” he replied.
With tears in my eyes, I ran out of the room. When I walked out, my friends crowded into the locker room to look at the finalized team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away. Every one of them jumped around after seeing they made the team. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food, but my friend Dan caught up to me on the way.
“Hey, what’s up? Everybody is going to celebrate making the team at my house. Will you be there?” he asked. “I didn’t make the team,” I said, upset. “Oh, I didn’t know. I guess you can still come after school if you want,” he suggested. Dan walked away. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. My mind was blank (空白的) for the rest of the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot, I saw all my friends gathered at the back of the parking lot, laughing and joking. I walked around the side of the school to avoid them. I saw my father’s familiar red car pull up near the school parking lot.

【答案】One possible version:

Theresa had always looked forward to the first day of school, but this year was different. Due to her father’s recent job change, she and her family had moved across the country to a new town and a new neighborhood.
She didn’t even want to get out of bed. Getting up meant going to school. She didn’t know a soul. She had no friends here. Who would she talk to? Who would she hang out with? This would not be a good day, she thought to herself.
After a quick breakfast, she grabbed her things and headed down the street to the corner where the bus would pick her up.
In the distance, she could see two girls laughing about something. As Theresa got closer, the girls shot a brief look at her way and then continued on with their conversation. Finally the bus arrived. Theresa stepped on and sat alone. The ride seemed rather long until the bus pulled up in front of the school.
Theresa climbed off the bus with no idea where to go. The school was much bigger than her old one. She had made it through the whole morning. But now it’s lunch time, and she was keenly aware of the fact that she had no one to sit and dine with.
She found a place alone in the corner and sat down with lunch. Just as she started to eat, she saw two girls approaching. They were the girls from the bus stop.
“Do you mind if we join you?” said the one in front.

【答案】范文

The first day Mohamed went to a fine food store in his new neighborhood, he realized that he really wasn’t in Tunisia anymore. He looked up at the menu board, which had nothing but sandwiches on it, and wondered how he was going to figure out what all of these strange names meant. Mohamed decided that he would just get dessert instead and asked the woman at the counter for ice cream in a cup. She smiled broadly and disappeared behind the big glass display case to fill his order.
While Mohamed waited, he looked at the baked goods in the case. There were sixteen kinds of bagels (百吉饼) and a few different types of cookies that Mohamed didn’t recognize, but there were no pies and definitely nothing from home. Mohamed had been so excited when his parents told him they were immigrating to the United States, but now, his bravery and excitement felt a little out of place.
The woman came back to the counter with a tall paper cup. It contained a long straw and some kind of frothy (有泡沫的) drink. Mohamed, completely confused, took the cup and thanked her, considering the possibility that he had used the wrong word.
“It’s the soda you ordered,” she said, “an ice cream drink in a cup.”
He smiled at the woman again, pointed at one of the bagels, and said, “That one, too, please,” which seemed to work better.
Mohamed took the bagel and his mystery soda to a table and sat down to eat. Why was it that English had been so easy for him in his classes in Tunisia, but when it came down to actually speaking, he couldn’t even get what he wanted to eat?
Later, he might find it funny that his English was so hard to figure out that he got a soda instead of the ice cream he wanted. Right now, it just felt depressing that his English was, he thought, disappointing. One mistake seemed to put everything Mohamed wanted or knew about himself impossible to reach.

【答案】The next day, Mohamed made a plan to engage deeply in English. He started by watching American TV shows and listening to English music. At first, he struggled to understand the fast-paced dialogue and lyrics, but he didn’t give up. Instead, he used subtitles and lyrics websites to help him follow along. Mohamed also joined a local English language class, where he met other immigrants who were facing similar challenges. They became close friends and studied together, supporting each other through the ups and downs of learning a new language. Over time, Mohamed’s English skills improved dramatically. He was able to hold conversations with strangers, order food at restaurants, and even understand complicated lectures at school.
One day, he decided to return to the store where he had his first frustrating experience. This time, he confidently ordered a chocolate ice cream in a cup, without any mistakes. The woman at the counter smiled and handed him his dessert, and for a moment, Mohamed felt a sense of accomplishment. He realized that making mistakes was an essential part of learning and growing. And even though he had faced challenges, he had never given up. Mohamed knew that there were still many more adventures waiting for him in America. But he was ready for them, armed with his newfound confidence and skills. And as he looked out the window of the store, he felt excited about the possibilities that lay ahead.

One winter night, a snowstorm swept over Minnesota. Residents did not anticipate such a strong storm, so many were unprepared. In Lucas’ case, the roof of his house broke, and he had to place buckets (水桶) under a large hole to keep the falling snow from filling his home. He worked as a cashier at the local store, and while he wanted to stay home the day after the storm, he needed to fill in for those who couldn’t go to work.
There were only a couple of people in the store, as it was challenging to cope with deep snow in the streets. They bought a lot of food just in case of more snowstorms.
After serving a couple of adults, Lucas came across a boy, about 11 years old, with a cart (推车) full of goods. Once Lucas gave him the total, the boy realized he was two dollars short to meet the payment. “Oh no, I miscalculated the total,” the boy said, looking around the store thinking of what to do. After a couple of seconds, Lucas grew angry. “Well? Are you paying for the goods or not? You’re holding up the line!” he shouted.
“I’m sorry. I am two dollars short. I need to take some things out of my cart. Please serve the others first while I sort things out,” the boy explained, walking to the side to let other customers go ahead.
Lucas thought the boy was playing tricks on him, especially after checking out so many items from the store. Then he saw the tennis rackets (球拍) fixed to the boy’s feet and this made him curious. Once Lucas had served all the customers, he decided to approach the boy. “Why do you have tennis rackets fixed to your feet?” he asked.
“This is the only way I could get through the snow on the way to the store. I live with my old grandmother, and I needed supplies for her and our other neighbours. My neighbours’ house was covered in snow. I wanted to help them,” the boy explained sadly.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:

Recently, I got to spend a lot of time with our 3-year-old grandson—Theodore. This opportunity was incredibly precious and a much-needed chance to make up for the moments I missed out on with my own son when he was little.
Theodore was new to my home. He was fascinated by his new environments—his first experiences of cold weather and snow, a whole new household with different lights, different floors, a whole host of new drawers and cupboards to open and new sets of toys, a different place to sleep. He had experienced none of them before, which made his days full of exploration and inquiry. Every drawer and every cupboard had all sorts of new stuff that needed to be taken out, examined, sometimes thrown and sometimes put carefully away again.
During the first week, I felt fresh with such an energetic creature. However, everything began to change after a rainy day. The downpour kept us indoors. He went back and forth, back and forth between the floor and the carpet, dropping the same ring to see what it would do in different places. He would throw it, drop it or place it carefully. He would try different sized rings. For me, it was boring and meaningless. So I wanted to teach him something—something “useful” at least I considered. I took a shape-sorting toy from the shelf, knelt down(跪下), and held up a square block. “See this? It goes here,” I said, guiding it into the square hole. He glanced(瞥)over, then went back to dropping his ring on the carpet, looking a little upset. I tried again, waving a circular block.
“Come on. Let’s do this together. It’s fun!” I said, but he just picked up another ring, his tiny fingers wrapping around it. It was then that I began to lose my temper.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(25-26高二上·河北衡水武邑中学·期中)On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling(巡逻) the streets. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers, rang. “The cake shop near the City Museum has reported a burglary (窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately”, said the electronic voice.
The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor (监控器) and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5:20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.
Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She had an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lived in poverty.
Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara’s house. Bob, the other officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.
The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman, Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.
At that very moment, a child’s voice broke the silence, “Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday? Invite them in, please.”
After hearing the boy’s words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, “Officer, I did steal those things, but there’s nothing else I could do. It’s my baby’s birthday, and I’ve got neither job nor money. Please don’t take those things away. I’ve just used them to make him a cake.”

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My mum only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.
She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was a field day, and my mum came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me. “Your mum only has one eye?” and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mum. So I said to my mum, “Why don’t you have the other eye? You only make me a joke!” My mum trembled (颤抖) with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, “I’m so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I will leave right now. Sorry!” My mum turned around and left.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mum and our poor life. Maybe because my mum hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think I had hurt her feelings very badly.
I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by a famous university. I left my mother and came to a big city to study. I never went back to visit my mum.
Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. At the moment I was living happily as a successful man. I enjoyed the life in the city because it was a place that didn’t remind me of my mum and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day some-one knocked at my door.
It was my mum! And still with her one eye!

Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It was not uncommon to see a person like me in an amusement park, who held purses, cellphones and sunglasses while others enjoyed themselves riding roller coasters. I admitted their courage, but refused to challenge myself.
One day when we were at the Happy Amusement Park in Seattle, my friends tried to get me to ride a roller coaster. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks made me scared. The stop at the top, before falling with people's screams, seemed terrible.
My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was saying no as usual, when I suddenly saw a familiar face, one I had never seen in real life. It was Raine, a popular young tennis star at the top of her game, who was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her.
She was making her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Loudest Scream. I was running fast because I didn't want to miss the chance to meet her face to face, but I was also a bit nervous. So I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came off the ride.
Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I focused on her walking toward me. She walked past. It was more difficult to talk to a star than I thought, but I had to take the chance. I called her name, not very confidently, but more like a question, “Raine?” She turned around. Our eyes actually met. “Would you mind signing for me?” I asked, handing the pen and paper toward her. Her hand wrote over the paper and she said, “You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let's take a roller coaster together.”
Paragraph 1:
Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings.

Paragraph 2:
My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
