For Derek Veal, it all started when he was 12 years old, playing in his grandfather’s barn. While exploring it, Veal discovered an old suitcase. Inside were piles of old photos, some of them over 100 years old.
The suitcase belonged to his great-grandmother. She had Alzheimer’s and lived in a nearby nursing home. Veal and his grandfather visited her shortly afterwards with the photos, hoping she could tell them more about them. What happened next changed Veal’s life.
“Everything came back to her when she saw these pictures. She recognized her sisters, her aunts, her grandparents… It was the first time I had seen someone’s lost memories from an old photo returning to them.” Veal said.
The experience made Veal realize the power of old photographs to hold treasured and long-forgotten memories and restore their identity. It never left him. It was the first thing Veal thought about when he found some old family photos for sale at a thrift store two years ago. “I decided to pick a picture out, study it, and then try to get it back to its original family,” he said. Soon, Veal bought more photos and started a Facebook group called Old Photo Project to aid in finding other photos’ families.
Veal is not the only person to take on the hobby of returning lost photographs. Photo enthusiasts around the world have taken on the task of searching for old photographs with the purpose of reuniting them with their families. What makes this hobby so unique is not only how it gives people the chance to help others, but it also brings these enthusiasts a sense of identity. “The more I return memories,” said a photo enthusiast, “the more it feels like I’m supposed to be doing this.”
4.Why did Veal bring the old photos to his great-grandmother?
A.To show his grandfather’s secret suitcase. B.To help her identify her lost relatives.
C.To decorate her room in the nursing home. D.To learn about the stories behind the photos.
5.What did Veal do after finding old family photos in a thrift store?
A.He donated photos to local nursing homes.
B.He set up an online group to help return photos.
C.He opened a physical shop to sell old photos.
D.He kept photos to remember his great-grandmother.
6.What can we learn about global photo enthusiasts?
A.They match lost photos with families.
B.They take care of seniors with Alzheimer’s.
C.They earn a lot by collecting old family photos.
D.They create Facebook groups to collect photos.
7.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To advertise Old Photo Project. B.To explain how to recover memories.
C.To introduce a meaningful hobby. D.To teach how to find lost family photo.

Every autumn, I give my first-year college students an unusual writing task. I ask them to imagine that they are alone at an old telephone booth (电话亭) in the Mojave Desert. The night is quiet, and there is no one for miles. Suddenly, the phone rings. “Who is calling?” I ask. Students must explain not only who is calling but also why that person has chosen to call them.
The idea came from a real telephone booth that once stood in the California desert. Travelers visited it because anyone, from anywhere, might call. Although the booth has disappeared, I wondered whether an unexpected call could open an unexpected conversation. So I turned the idea into a writing task.
When I first used it, I expected many kinds of answers. Some students imagined conversations with historical figures; others received calls from grandparents they had never met or strangers asking for help. But one choice appeared again and again: students imagined receiving a call from an older version of themselves.
At first, I thought this simply happened by chance. Then the same pattern appeared semester after semester. Curious, I reread dozens of stories, paying attention not to who was calling but to what was being said. The future selves rarely talked about wealth, fame or great success. Instead, they offered words of comfort. They told their younger selves that failure would pass, loneliness would disappear gradually and life would become larger than today’s worries.
Then I understood. These imagined callers were not predicting the future. They were giving words to hopes the students already carried but had never expressed. By imagining someone who did not exist, students found a safe way to speak honestly about the lives they were living.
The telephone booth, then, is not really the destination. It is a doorway. Sometimes imagination does not take us away from reality; it helps us see it more clearly. The voice we are waiting to hear may have been our own all along.
8.Why did the author use the desert booth setting?
A.To honor the desert booth. B.To promote travel in the desert.
C.To encourage imaginative writing. D.To analyse students’ inner thoughts.
9.What caught the author’s attention?
A.The same kind of caller. B.The fear of loneliness.
C.The absence of grandparents. D.The wide variety of answers.
10.Why did the author reread the students’ stories?
A.To find writing mistakes. B.To understand their repeated choices.
C.To select the best stories. D.To compare their emotions.
11.What does the telephone booth represent in the passage?
A.A symbol of unanswered questions. B.A chance to meet unexpected people.
C.A path to self-understanding. D.A doorway to escape reality.

Effort, widely praised as a sign of success, may, if overemphasized, create a presumption that hard work compensates (补偿) for a lack of talent. This emphasis can backfire by implying low inborn ability, turning society into a judge of intellectual worth where talent acts as hidden capital and visible effort becomes its cheap replacement. Such a replacement, however, often proves questionable, for it obscures the genuine role of natural aptitude in achievement.
Field-specific beliefs hold that STEM success depends heavily on inborn brilliance. When combined with gender stereotypes (性别刻板印象), overstressing effort weakens women’s interest, both as curiosity and as intellectual return, in these domains. Attribution theory further explains this by asserting a reverse proportion between effort and ability; thus, apparent hard work may signal low talent to observers, causing discouragement especially in fields that prize raw intelligence over acquired skills. This logic, though tricky, systematically undermines confidence.
Our four studies confirm this pattern: both observers and participants under effort-highlighted conditions showed weaker support for STEM majors and lower career intentions, regardless of gender. Perceptions of low talent consistently mediated this avoidance effect, and this mediating role was replicated across experiments. In practical terms, the declining share of women in senior STEM positions may partly stem from these biases, which interpret visible diligence as a sign of lower ability rather than true dedication, thereby steering women away from long-term careers in these challenging fields.
Were one to dissect the composite nature of what society often unreflectively celebrates as success, one would find that the prevailing habit of attributing outstanding performance either to an inborn spark of genius or to a sheer abundance of dogged labor fails to capture the true alchemy (炼金术), for the actual fabric of achievement is woven from two distinct clues, the steady investment of time and energy and a flexible body of methodical expertise, which outsiders tend to mislabel as native capability or intellectual flair, though that mastery is in reality a developed capacity, one acquired through sustained practice and deliberate refinement, and any framework that elevates one component while diminishing the other weakens the very drive it intends to cultivate.
12.What does overemphasizing effort primarily suggest about a person?
A.It implies a shortage of natural intellectual capacity.
B.It proves that success comes from persistent labor.
C.It reduces the social value of their hard work.
D.It enhances others’ recognition of their talent.
13.Which would the theory in paragraph 2 least support if a female STEM student is often credited for her industriousness?
A.She may grow to doubt her own intellectual standing in the field.
B.Observers might view her effort as compensation for lower ability.
C.Her sense of belonging in STEM could gradually become weakened.
D.Teachers don’t necessarily see her effort as reflecting intelligence.
14.What can be inferred about the research findings on women’s careers?
A.Perceived ability limits may help account for the career declines.
B.Both academic support and job intentions show similar avoidance.
C.Overt discrimination outweighs implicit ability perceptions.
D.The observed pattern changes when gender is not specified.
15.According to the achievement formula, performance is composed of effort and ___.
A.ability. B.skill. C.brilliance. D.talent.

Imagine you’re a kid in an elementary school. You have spent all morning learning new words and practicing multiplication. Then finally, it is time for a break. You run out of the stuffy school building, only to find a large area of burning hot blacktop. 16 . Due to decades of paving entire schoolyards to reduce maintenance costs, this is the reality for thousands of city school children. Lamont was one of them.
Lack of access to nature does more than reduce social and emotional well-being. Asphalt (沥青) surfaces absorb and give off more heat, creating the “heat island effect,” which can negatively impact human health. 17 . When rainwater washes these substances away, they end up polluting rivers and streams.
However, thanks to Reflo and his partners, these lifeless blacktops are being replaced with rich natural environments where kids can learn and play. During the three-year design process, each school chooses which natural elements they want to include, from pollinator (传粉者) gardens to soccer fields to micro-forests. Most schools will include a bioswale (低洼地) that manages stormwater. 18 . The new schoolyards are built over the summer to minimize the impact on the academic year, and the habitats support wildlife, like butterflies and bees.
“ 19 ,” said Lamont. “Thousands of young people, including some of the most socially and economically disadvantaged children, will have significantly better experiences, and they can take a lot of pride in their schools.”
Schoolyards are the best strategic investment for environmental improvement. 20 . These benefits, in turn, contribute to improved academic performance. What’s more, once the school day is over, the schoolyards are open to the public and serve as community parks.
A.They also concentrate pollutants
B.Reflo’s work is truly transformational
C.They will also add outdoor classrooms
D.There isn’t a single tree or any grass in sight
E.The flat surface seems perfect for playing games
F.Nature reduces stress and boosts creative thinking
G.These surfaces prevent water from entering the ground

In Shanghai, she found a second family — the parents of her 29 exchange partner. Back in 1990, when housing was extremely 30 , the family had managed to host her for a weekend, saying, “Our child stayed with your family in Hamburg for three weeks; we want to return the 31 .”
That simple mutual goodwill blossomed into a 32 spanning decades. Her exchange partner later moved to the US for studies and a career in finance, and his yearend workload 33 allowed him to return for Chinese New Year. 34 , every Lunar New Year’s Eve for over a decade, Kaehler joined her Shanghai parents for dinner.
Last year when I was in China, breakfast 36 (mean) the same lively sounds every morning — “Hot soy milk! 37 (fresh) steamed baozi!” On the corner, the warm smell floated along the street. People lined up with sleepy smiles, some 38 (chat) with the stall owner, others skimming the morning headlines. As soon as the food was handed over, they grabbed a first bite while it was still hot. The bang of pots, the splash of oil, and soft clouds of steam made the street feel welcoming, as if breakfast had opened the city’s front door to greet the 39 (wake) world.
Now, back home in a small town in the U.S., mornings are quiet and rushed — a bowl of cereal with cold milk, a piece of toast, or juice in the car, all of 40 are familiar scenes in daily life. The kitchen feels cold; there are no lines, no talk — just the noise of the fridge and the tick of the clock. It feels 41 (distance), like eating alone before the day even notices you.
I deeply miss mornings in Beijing where breakfast 42 (it) is part of the day. It isn’t just a fuel; it’s 43 short pause warming you up and bringing you into the life of the street. Living in Beijing has shown me how breakfast can shape the start of a day. I find myself 44 (draw) to the corner stall, not only for food, 45 for the small routine which lets me slow my pace, listen, and feel close to the city.

Phil, a 57-year-old property manager, had been thinking about getting a dog for over a year. His apartment lease (租约) changed recently to allow pets. He told himself he was just going to look — get a sense of what the process was like, not commit to anything.
At the Hawthorn Shelter, a volunteer named Amber walked him through the kennels (狗屋). At the end of the row, Otto, who had been at Hawthorn for seven months and desperately needed a new owner, was introduced to him. Actually, he had been adopted once before — returned after two weeks with a note: “Too attached. Follows constantly. Can’t be left alone.” That note had followed Otto like a shadow ever since, scaring off almost every other visitor who paused at his kennel, yet Phil felt something special in Otto.
Amber set Phil up in a small visiting room with Otto. Phil sat on the bench. Otto pressed against his leg immediately. They sat together for about twenty minutes — Phil looking through his phone, Otto staying close without demanding anything, occasionally resting his chin (下巴) on Phil’s knee with a soft sigh. When Phil’s phone rang, he stood up. Otto didn’t bark or jump. He simply stepped forward, placed both front paws around Phil’s leg, and held on. Phil took a step toward the door. Otto’s paws tightened. He pressed his forehead into Phil’s knee. His body trembled faintly.
Phil stopped moving. He stood completely still for nearly a full minute, just looking down at this dog holding onto his leg in total silence, his heart heavy with something he couldn’t name. Amber, watching from the hallway, later said that the silence was the loudest thing she’d heard all week.
Phil slowly sat back down on the floor. Otto climbed directly into his lap, curled into a tight ball. Phil sat there for another fifteen minutes, studying Otto’s peaceful, trusting face, and something deep inside him quietly shifted.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Then he walked to the front desk.
Three days later, Amber received some photos of Otto from Phil on her phone.

根据第一段“Every autumn, I give my first-year college students an unusual writing task. I ask them to imagine that they are alone at an old telephone booth (电话亭) in the Mojave Desert. The night is quiet, and there is no one for miles. Suddenly, the phone rings. “Who is calling?” I ask. Students must explain not only who is calling but also why that person has chosen to call them.(每年秋天,我都会给大一新生布置一项别出心裁的写作任务。我让他们想象自己独自一人站在莫哈韦沙漠的一间老式电话亭里。夜晚安静,方圆数英里内都无人。突然,电话响了。“谁在打电话?”我问道。学生们不仅需要说明来电者是谁,还要解释对方为何选择打电话给他们)”以及第二段“So I turned the idea into a writing task.(于是,我将这个想法转化为一项写作任务)”可知,作者使用沙漠电话亭的场景是为了鼓励富有想象力的写作。
9.细节理解题。根据第三段“But one choice appeared again and again: students imagined receiving a call from an older version of themselves.(但一个选择却反复出现:学生们想象着接到年长版的自己电话)”可知,同类型的来电引起了作者的注意。

Curious, I reread dozens of stories, paying attention not to who was calling but to what was being said.(起初,我以为这只是偶然发生的事。
根据最后一段“The telephone booth, then, is not really the destination. It is a doorway. Sometimes imagination does not take us away from reality; it helps us see it more clearly. The voice we are waiting to hear may have been our own all along.(因此,电话亭并不是真正的目的地,而只是一个入口。有时,想象力并不会让我们远离现实,反而帮助我们更清晰地看到它。我们等待听到的声音,或许从一开始就是属于自己的)”可知,电话亭在文中象征着通往自我理解的道路。

【导语】文章主要探讨了过度强调努力可能带来的负面影响,尤其是对女性在STEM领域职业发展的阻碍,并分析了成就的真正构成要素。
【详解】12.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Effort, widely praised as a sign of success, may, if overemphasized, create a presumption that hard work compensates (补偿) for a lack of talent. This emphasis can backfire by implying low inborn ability (努力,作为一种被广泛赞誉为成功的标志,如果被过分强调,可能会造成一种认知,即努力可以弥补天赋的不足。这种强调可能会适得其反,因为它暗示了天生能力不足)”可知,过度强调努力暗示一个人缺乏天生的智力能力。
13.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Attribution theory further explains this by asserting a reverse proportion between effort and ability; thus, apparent hard work may signal low talent to observers (归因理论进一步解释这一点,断言努力与能力之间存在反比关系;因此,明显的努力工作可能向观察者发出低才能的信号)”可知,段中的归因理论认为努力被视为低能力的信号。 D项“Teachers don’t necessarily see her effort as reflecting intelligence.”
根据第三段“Our four studies confirm this pattern: both observers and participants under effort-highlighted conditions showed weaker support for STEM majors and lower career intentions, regardless of gender. Perceptions of low talent consistently mediated this avoidance effect, and this mediating role was replicated across experiments. In practical terms, the declining share of women in senior STEM positions may partly stem from these biases, which interpret visible diligence as a sign of lower ability rather than true dedication, thereby steering women away from long-term careers in these challenging fields.(我们的四项研究证实了这一模式:在强调努力的情境下,无论性别如何,观察者和参与者对STEM专业的支持度都较弱,职业意向也更低。对天赋不足的认知始终是这种回避效应的中介变量,且这种中介作用在多个实验中得到了重复验证。在实际层面,女性在高级STEM职位中比例下降,可能部分源于这些偏见,它们将显见的勤奋解读为能力不足而非真正投入的迹象,从而引导女性远离这些具有挑战性领域的长期职业)”可知,对天赋不足的认知,即感知到能力不足,可能有助于解释为什么女性在STEM领域职业意向更低。
15.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“for the actual fabric of achievement is woven from two distinct clues, the steady investment of time and energy and a flexible body of methodical expertise (因为成就的实际构成是由两条不同的线索编织而成的:稳定的时间和精力投入,以及一套灵活的系统性专业知识)”可知,成就由努力和技能组成。

My Views on Fragmented Reading
Today, I’d like to talk about a habit that quietly shapes our daily lives — fragmented reading.
Admittedly, this type of reading enables us to keep up with current events and acquire practical knowledge efficiently. Nevertheless, it may discourage us from focusing on lengthy, thought-provoking texts. To break this negative cycle, I suggest we consciously spare at least half an hour every day for immersive reading of a printed book.
Only by resisting the urge to scroll and choosing to dive deep can we truly nourish our souls and regain the pure joy of reading. Thank you!

47. Then he walked to the front desk. Amber looked up, surprised. “I thought you were just looking,” she said. Phil smiled. “So did I.” He filled in the forms. When Amber brought Otto out, the dog stood still, as if afraid to believe it. Phil knelt and gently touched his head. “Let’s go home,” he said. Otto pressed against his leg and walked beside him, tail low but steady. In the car, the dog curled up on the passenger seat and let out a long sigh. Phil felt something warm settle in his chest.
Three days later, Amber received some photos of Otto from Phil on her phone. In one, Otto lay stretched across a sunlit sofa, eyes half closed. In another, he sat beside Phil at a café. The last showed him asleep on Phil’s bed. A message followed: “He follows me everywhere — and I don’t mind. He’s not ‘too attached’. He just needed someone who wouldn’t leave.” Amber smiled and saved the photos. Otto had finally found his home.
