Henry is the pen-name of William Sydney Porter, one of America’s most beloved short-story writers. He produced more than three hundred short stories during his short lifetime. Almost all his stories are set in the everyday world of ordinary people. His special writing style, especially the surprise ending, has made him world famous. Porter’s early life was full of changes. He left formal schooling when he was fifteen. However, he loved reading very much. He read widely in libraries, and this self-study built his rich knowledge base. He tried many different jobs: clerk, reporter, bank worker. Each job brought him different life experiences. He met all kinds of ordinary men and women. Those real-life people later became the models for the characters in his stories. Unluckily, he was sent to prison for three years because of a bank-related mistake. Life in prison was hard, but it pushed him to begin writing short stories to make money for his little daughter. It was in prison that he created his pen-name “O. Henry”. After he was set free, he moved to New York City. New York’s busy street life offered him endless writing materials. He watched shop assistants, poor artists, common workers. He cared about their small happiness and hidden sadness. O. Henry’s surprise ending is not just a clever trick. Behind the sudden turn of plot, there is deep human care. In The Last Leaf, we see self-sacrifice and hope. In The Gift of the Magi, a young couple sell their most precious possessions to buy Christmas gifts for each other. Their gifts become useless, but their true love shines brightly. Though O. Henry passed away over a century ago, his works are still widely read. His stories remind us that great literature does not always need great heroes. Ordinary people’s joy and pain can also create timeless literary treasures. 35.What helped Porter build his rich knowledge? A.Good college education. B.Wide reading by himself. C.Teachers’ careful teaching. D.Writing stories in prison. 36.Where did Porter get most of his story characters? A.Famous historical heroes. B.Rich people from big parties. C.Real-life ordinary people he met. D.Books he read in the library. 37.Why did Porter start writing short stories in prison? A.To become world famous. B.To make money for his daughter. C.To record prison life for society. D.To show his anger against unfair rules. 38.What do we know about O. Henry’s surprise ending? A.It is only a meaningless writing trick. B.It hides deep care for human beings. C.All his stories have sad and terrible endings. D.It mainly describes great national heroes. 39.What is the main idea of this passage? A.It introduces O. Henry’s life experience and his literary features. B.It retells the full story of The Last Leaf. C.It compares different American short story writers. D.It teaches readers how to write stories with surprise endings. Poems from the Tang and Song Dynasties, operas from the Yuan Dynasty, and novels from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772—842), a famous poet and writer in the mid-Tang Dynasty. Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane (鹤) riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky. His poems pay special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced translator Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese. Here is another example. In Liu’s essay A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “This is a humble dwelling, yet it boasts a fine reputation thanks to my virtuous character (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨)”, I think to be a respectable (值得尊敬的) man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to get knowledge. 40.Which dynasty was Liu Yuxi from? 41.What did most ancient poets usually describe autumn as in their poems? 42.Who translated the poem “Song of Autumn” mentioned in the passage? 43.How many words does Liu Yuxi’s essay “A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling” have? 44.What does Liu Yuxi show through “A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling” besides the picture of his humble cell? 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 《Unit 8 The world of literature Reading 课后练习》参考答案 题号 35 36 37 38 39 答案 B C B B A 1. 8.have a very small chance of living 9.fall off the tree 10.a night of beating rain and wild wind 11.have yet to do sth 12.lean against the wall 13.become the best work of his life 14.apartments 【详解】句意:我叔叔住在一栋高楼的十楼,这栋楼总共有五十多套公寓套房。 branch“树枝”可数名词,形容词“long”前无冠词,且句尾“among them”中them指代前面的树枝,需用复数branches。 根据“A: Did you read the book Journey to the West last night?” 21.根据“A: Because he always protects the weak.” 故选A。 22.根据“Who else do you like in the story?” 23.根据“B: Great!
