This was a significant moment when a voice from China was projected onto one of the world’s most influential academic stages. His speech opened with a childhood story from a small village in Hunan Province. After a spider bite, his mother treated it with a traditional folk method using fire, because there were no doctors nearby. Later, at Harvard, where he studied biochemistry, he realized that heat could stop the proteins (蛋白质) in the spider’s poison from working. But the memory of the pain stayed with him, showing the unfair situation in world science and medicine. This painful memory drove him to major in medicine, determined to improve healthcare for people in rural (乡村的) areas. After graduating from one top Chinese university, he entered Harvard. In the speech, he thanked his family for helping him develop a strong will and work hard in his studies. His father, whose own chances were limited by little schooling, always stressed the importance of education, while his mother’s steady support helped him through difficult times. It was with this toughness that he finally won the speaking honor through a strict three-round competition involving writing and speech tests. Adapting to a new culture and language was challenging at first, but he gradually found his place by taking part in campus life. His speech skillfully combined his own story into a universal call for sharing knowledge. Today, as a researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying diseases, He Jiang continues to build bridges by writing in English about rural China, aiming to build deeper global understanding of his homeland. “I want more voices from China to be heard,” he said. His journey perfectly shows this goal, proving how an individual story can share a nation’s voice in the world’s conversation. 4. Why did He Jiang begin his speech with the spider bite story? A. To describe his childhood in a small village. B. To give advice on the unfair global situation. C. To share a traditional treatment of spider bite. D. To explain the reason why he studied medicine. 5. Which of the following best describes He Jiang? A. Talented but uncaring. B. Adaptable and humorous. C. Intelligent but unfortunate. D. Determined and responsible. 6. What does He Jiang hope to achieve through his current work? A. To speed up development in rural China. B. To promote global understanding of China. C. To make achievements in medical research. D. To encourage more students to study medicine. 7. What is the best title of the passage? A. Overcoming Challenges: A Chinese Student at Harvard B. Winning a Speech: Success in an Academic Competition C. Connecting Worlds: A Journey Through Science and Story D. Bridging the Gap: Between Traditional and Modern Medicine 【答案】4. D 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第二段中的“After a spider bite, his mother treated it with a traditional folk method using fire, because there were no doctors nearby. Later, at Harvard, where he studied biochemistry, he realized that heat could stop the proteins (蛋白质) in the spider’s poison from working. But the memory of the pain stayed with him, showing the unfair situation in world science and medicine. This painful memory drove him to major in medicine, determined to improve healthcare for people in rural 根据第二段中的“This painful memory drove him to major in medicine, determined to improve healthcare for people in rural (乡村的) areas.(但那段痛苦的记忆一直萦绕在他心头,揭示了世界科学和医疗领域的不公现状。这段痛苦的记忆促使他主修医学,决心改善农村地区人们的医疗保健条件。)”,第四段中的“Adapting to a new culture and language was challenging at first, but he gradually found his place by taking part in campus life.(起初适应新的文化和语言颇具挑战,但他通过参与校园生活逐渐找到了自己的位置。)”以及最后一段中的“He Jiang continues to build bridges by writing in English about rural China, aiming to build deeper global understanding of his homeland.(何江继续通过用英文书写中国乡村的故事搭建沟通桥梁,旨在让世界更深入地了解自己的祖国。)” 根据最后一段中的“Today, as a researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying diseases, He Jiang continues to build bridges by writing in English about rural China, aiming to build deeper global understanding of his homeland.(如今,作为麻省理工学院研究疾病的研究员,何江继续通过用英文书写中国乡村的故事搭建沟通桥梁,旨在让世界更深入地了解自己的祖国。)” 根据第一段中的“He Jiang made history by becoming the first Chinese student to make a graduation speech at Harvard University (哈佛大学).(何江成为首位在哈佛大学发表毕业演讲的中国学生,创造了历史。)”,第二段中的“This painful memory drove him to major in medicine, determined to improve healthcare for people in rural (乡村的) areas.(这段痛苦的记忆促使他主修医学,决心改善农村地区人们的医疗保健条件。)”以及最后一段中的“He Jiang continues to build bridges by writing in English about rural China, aiming to build deeper global understanding of his homeland.(何江继续通过用英文书写中国乡村的故事搭建沟通桥梁,旨在让世界更深入地了解自己的祖国。)” C Ethan Hardy started his Brigham Young University (BYU) experience as many students do — curious, yet undecided on a major, maybe music or biology — but he knew one thing forcertain: he was going to take advantage of every chance BYU provided him by paying it forward. “Here at BYU, I’ve got so many opportunities that are invested in my success,” said Hardy. “I want to be someone who helps others along in their journey.” During his first year and a half at BYU, Hardy has volunteered as a piano teacher at Provo’s South Franklin Community Center, teaching weekly piano lessons to children who might otherwise not be able to afford them. “It’s been very valuable,” said Hardy. “I love teaching and seeing students grow. But the reason I’ve stuck with it is the relationships I’ve built with these kids and their families.” For Hardy, finding time each week amidst a busy school schedule to teach piano at the community center isn't a matter of trade-offs; it’s an important part of his college experience that has encouraged him to put his ability and character into action. A gifted pianist, Hardy arrived on campus in 2022 with a deep understanding of the power of music. Still, he couldn’t forget his love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). “I’ve always been drawn to subjects like math and science, which was why I was interested in medicine when I was young,” said Hardy. Hardy recently began a summer internship (实习) at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he’s working with Dr. Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and other students researching lung cancer. He’ll also join a nonprofit (非营利组织), helping to raise awareness of the importance of lung cancer screening through events and community outreach. The small device records your every word and interaction and responds accordingly by text. The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation are at record highs. Studies show that 61% of young people in the U. S. suffer from serious loneliness, a statistic that reveals a growing mental health crisis. While AI reshapes all the ways we interact in jobs, healthcare and entertainment —more and more people report feeling socially isolated, Schiffmann, Meet Friend’s founder, sees it differently: the device isn’t a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by. AI companionship is controversial. While some people argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely. If you are someone who already struggles with human interactions, the thinking goes, why would you continue to subject yourself to them when you have an AI friend who’s fun and uncomplicated, and doesn’t come with all the baggage of another person? But so far, the research doesn’t seem to support this fear. Drake, a researcher at Stanford University, surveyed more than 1,000 students who used the AI chatbot Replika, and investigated their feelings of loneliness. Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika’s advice. It is still a new field, though, and Drake says there needs to be guidelines. “I strongly believe that you do need to have guidelines around AI companions pushing people back when appropriate, towards human relationships,” she says. These could be gentle reminders like “Hey, you should go chat with somebody about that.” 12. What is Meet Friend aimed at? A. Replacing human relationships. B. Boosting the productivity at work. C. Offering a new approach to connection. D. Detecting early symptoms of mental illness. 13. Why do some people oppose AI companionship according to paragraph 3? A. They think it doesn’t offer fun and emotional support. B. They claim it does serious harm to people’s mental health. C. They worry it will make human interaction more complicated. D. They fear it may lower people’s wish for real human interactions. 14. Which word can best describe Drake’s attitude towards AI companionship? A. Cautious. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Disapproving. 15. What does the text mainly focus on? A. The reliability of AI companions in daily life. B. The possibility of AI changing human nature. C. The potential of AI companions to ease loneliness. D. The role of AI as a replacement for human connection. C 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中的“Schiffmann, Meet Friend’s founder, sees it differently: the device isn’t a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by.(Meet Friend的创始人Schiffmann对此有不同的看法:这个设备不是人类关系的替代品,而是当人类陪伴难以获得时填补空白的一种方式。)” 根据第三段中的“While some people argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely.(虽然有些人认为它可以帮助人们减少孤独感,但其他人担心人工智能关系可能会取代真实的人际关系,从而使人们感到更加孤独。)” 根据第四段中的“Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika’s advice.(大约一半的用户报告说焦虑感降低,并感到有社会支持。近四分之一的受访者表示,由于Replika的建议,他们能够更好地处理当前关系中的压力。)”以及第五段中“It is still a new field, though, and Drake says there needs to be guidelines.(不过,这仍然是一个新领域,Drake说需要制定指导方针。)” 故选A。 根据全文内容,特别是第二段中的“The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation are at record highs.(这款设备问世之际,孤独和社交孤立现象正达到历史新高。)” 和第四段中的“But so far, the research doesn’t seem to support this fear.(但到目前为止,研究似乎并不支持这种担忧。)” As a writer who shares his journey online, I’m often asked how to begin a writing journey. He had curly brown hair and always kept his head down when walking in the hallway. Unlike other lively classmates, Bill was very shy. He was afraid of talking to strangers and could barely speak up even when the teacher asked him a question. Every break time, he would sit alone by the window, watching others play basketball or laugh loudly together, feeling like an outsider in the new school. One Monday morning, Bill noticed some bright blue benches installed on the playground. There was a heart-warming sign on them: “Friendship Bench - Sit here if you want a friend.” Curious, he visited the school website and learnt that the school put the bench to help lonely students make friends. He also found out how the bench worked: “When you sit on the bench, say yes to the first one who invites you to play and talk. If you see someone sitting on the bench, invite them to play and talk.” Bill nodded silently, but he didn’t dare to try it. The thought of sitting there and waiting for others to notice him made his heart race. Days passed, and Bill still stayed alone. One Friday afternoon, during the last break before school ended, he was hanging round on the playground, his eyes falling on the Friendship Bench. He noticed a girl who seldom talked in class sit on the bench. Almost immediately another girl went to say hi. They seemed to have a good time talking with each other. Longing for a friendship of his own, Bill finally found the courage to sit on a bench. Having butterflies in his stomach, he kept his head down and waited. Just then, a boy showed up and said hi. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From that day on, changes silently took place within Bill. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】(参考范文) Just then, a boy showed up and said hi. Bill was so nervous that his hands started to tremble. He lifted his head slightly and saw a friendly-looking boy standing in front of him. The boy said, “Hi, I’m Tom. I saw you sitting here. Do you want to play basketball with me and my friends?” Bill was surprised and delighted. He thought for a moment and then nodded, saying, “Yes, I’d love to.” As they walked to the basketball court, Bill realized that this was the first time he had agreed to play with others in this new school. He felt a warmth spreading in his heart, which he had never experienced before. From that day on, changes silently took place within Bill. He no longer kept his head down all the time when walking in the hallway. Instead, he would smile at his classmates. He also became more active in class. When the teacher asked questions, he would raise his hand bravely, which was something he had never done before. What’s more, he made more friends. They would often play together during break time and study together after school. Bill knew that it was the Friendship Bench that had given him the courage to step out of his shell. He was grateful for that special bench and the new friends he had made, who made his school life full of joy and laughter. 词汇激活 行为类 ①点头:nod/agree by nodding/give a nod ②走路去:walk to/make one’s way to/head for ③举手:raise one’s hand/put one’s hand up/lift one’s hand 情绪类 ①紧张:nervous/anxious/tense ②惊喜的:surprised/amazed/astonished 【点睛】【高分句型1】As they walked to the basketball court, Bill realized that this was the first time he had agreed to play with others in this new school. B He Jiang made history by becoming the first Chinese student to make a graduation speech at Harvard University This was a significant moment when a voice from China was projected onto one of the world’s most influential academic stages. Bridging the Gap: Between Traditional and Modern Medicine C Ethan Hardy started his Brigham Young University (BYU) experience as many students do — curious, yet undecided on a major, maybe music or biology — but he knew one thing forcertain: he was going to take advantage of every chance BYU provided him by paying it forward. Studying medicine by day and teaching music by night, Hardy is proving that when your priorities (优先事项) are right, maybe you really can “have it all.” 8. What did Hardy think of his university? A. It is attractive to overseas students. B. It has offered him great possibilities. C. It has a good name in the local community. D. It has played a role in reaching his music dream. 9. How has Hardy supported children at Provo’s South Franklin Community Center? A. By improving their family relationships. B. By inviting them to study at BYU. C. By teaching them music for free. D. By giving them a new piano. 10. What did Hardy focus on during his internship? A. Setting up a nonprofit. B. Designing STEM courses. C. Carrying out medical research. D. Organizing community activities. 11. Which of the following best describes Hardy? A. Smart and warm-hearted. B. Honest and hard-working. C. Creative and friendly. D. Brave and professional. D In a world where tech companies often compete to create the next productivity tool, a new device is breaking away from the pack: Meet Friend, a new wearable AI companion that you wear around your neck. As a writer who shares his journey online, I’m often asked how to begin a writing journey. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
