In 2008, a big wildfire called the Freeway Complex Fire broke out in Orange County. Friedrich and her husband had to act quickly to save animals from the fire. They roped pigs and helped guide frightened horses into trailers to move them to safety. They should have rescued (营救) all their neighbors’ horses, but the fire was getting closer.
That experience made Friedrich realize that there wasn’t a good rescue plan in place. In response, horse owners in Orange County formed the Large Animal Rescue Team (LART) in 2008. The group helped save horses and other animals from wildfires. Friedrich joined the team in 2009.
However, because of limited resources and fewer volunteers, the group recently decided to only operate within San Juan Capistrano, the city where it is based. This means that horse owners in nearby areas, like Yorba Linda, will no longer have support during fires. This decision has caused concern among people who live outside the city.
The idea of a local animal rescue team is not unique to Orange County, but this is the first time an organization has reduced its coverage in this way. In the past, volunteers traveled from different areas to help during emergencies (紧急情况). Now, that support is limited.
Although LART was praised for its success in rescuing animals, during one fire, there were problems with communication, which caused delays (延迟). The county recognized the team’s hard work during the 2020 fire season, but there were still issues with how the rescue efforts were managed.
With fewer volunteers, LART would no longer manage the program after January 1. Orange County has not yet shown interest in taking over the program. “For now, local horse owners are turning to other strategies (策略) and working to be prepared for emergencies. We understand that it’s important to be ready before fires strike,” says Friedrich.
4. How did the experience in 2008 affect Friedrich?
A. She gave up efforts to rescue wild animals. B. She realized the need for a better rescue plan.
C. She sold all the pigs and horses on her farm. D. She dropped out of a local animal rescue team.
5. Why did LART decide to operate only within San Juan Capistrano?
A. It was short of hands. B. It wasted much money in a fire rescue.
C. Neighboring areas had similar rescue teams. D. Fire risks in other areas had greatly been reduced.
6. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The new goals LART will set. B. The achievements LART made.
C. The problems facing LART. D. The national support for LART.
7. What have local horse owners probably been doing according to Friedrich?
A. Providing food for families in need. B. Waiting for the rescue team to return.
C. Holding activities to train volunteers. D. Looking for other solutions to wildfires.

If you fill a glass of water, buy a bottle of water, or even draw water from a well, there’s a good chance you’re drinking little pieces of plastic particles — microplastics (微塑料), which are smaller than 5 millimeters in size. A growing number of studies have found these little particles in drinking water sources around the world, and scientists are now studying the possible risks that affect human health.
Most microplastics are little pieces that break off from plastic bottles, food bottles, and plastic bags as they age and wear down. And some microplastics come from clothing; when we wash clothes with microplastics, microplastics fall off and end up in polluted water systems. These microplastics then make their way into rivers, lakes, oceans, and even groundwater.
Scientists are still learning about how microplastics affect human health. In laboratory tests, microplastics have been shown to cause damage to liver cells (肝细胞) and the function of the stomach in animals. But it’s unclear exactly how many microplastics humans take in, or what long-term effects this intake might have. “We know microplastics are in our bodies, but we don’t yet know if they’re causing harm.” said Dr. Miller, a specialist at the University of California.
To address the problem of more microplastics entering into our bodies, scientists are working on better filtration (过滤) technologies. Some new water filters can catch microplastics as small as 0.1 micrometers. Some governments recently passed some laws requiring water companies to test for microplastics and reduce their levels. However, technology and laws alone are not enough. The solution also lies in our daily choices. As Dr. Miller puts it: “We can’t undo the microplastics that are already in our water, but we can take steps to stop more from getting there. It’s a problem we can solve if we work together.”
8. What can we know about microplastics from paragraph 1?
A. They can only be found in bottled water and well water.
B. They are found larger than 5 millimeters.
C. Scientists have fully proved their harm to human health.
D. They are likely to exist in the water people drink daily.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Microplastics’ influences. B. Microplastics’ varieties.
C. Microplastics’ sources. D. Microplastics’ solutions.
10. Which one best describes Dr. Miller’s view on microplastics?
A. Particles found, damage unproven. B. Risk known, threat controlled.
C. Current intake, zero danger. D. Liver ruined, crisis incoming.
11. What is the author’s attitude to solving the problem of microplastics?
A. Challenging. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Active.
D
Wouldn’t it be great if all kids had their own teacher? One-on-one instruction for everyone. Yes, in a perfect world, this is what we would choose. Alas, we are not in a perfect world — we have school overcrowding , underpaid and overworked teachers... the list goes on and on.
But smaller class size — can’t we do something about that?
Smaller class size is clearly connected with achievement, according to education professors and National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data. However, an economist found that class size wasn’t connected with achievement. But wait, smaller class size is connected with greater learning efficacy (功效), even as early as kindergarten. And just changing class size — just class size, other factors aside — makes a difference (Toppo, 2008).
So why haven’t we worked towards a smaller class size? Smaller class size is more expensive. More classroom space and more teachers are needed. And in today’s economic climate, smaller class size seems further out of reach than ever.
Whitehurst and Chingos, in Class Size: What Research Says and What It Means for State Policy (2011), write:
“When school has trouble with money, the cost-benefit test (成本效益测试) any educational plan must pass is not ’Does this plan have any positive effect?’ but rather ’Is this plan the most productive use of these educational dollars?’”
So even if smaller class size does positively affect students, it clearly is not the most productive use of educational dollars. What is your thought on that?
What are the choices? Private schools tend to have a smaller class size, but they can be expensive. There are also public schools that also tend to have a smaller class size — but space is limited.
What are your ideas on class size? Is it helpful, but not “cost-effective”? Or should educational value outstrip cost-effectiveness? Or does class size not make that much of a difference to show that it is worth the cost?
12. Which is a problem of present education according to Paragraph 1?
A. Small class size. B. High prices. C. Lazy students. D. Tired teachers.
13. What does the author think of smaller class size?
A. Creative. B. Unrealistic. C. Early. D. Useless.
14. What does the underlined word “outstrip” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Be more important than. B. Depend on. C. Consist of. D. Compare with.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The future of small size class.
B. The high cost of educational value.
C. The connection between class size and student achievement.
D. Various opinions on smaller size class.

第二节(满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”
Paragraph1:
Slowly,Peter raised his hand.

【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了2008年Orange County大火后,弗里德里希意识到救援计划不足,推动了LART的成立。但如今LART因资源有限缩减了救援范围,导致周边居民担忧。尽管曾获赞誉,LART也面临沟通和志愿者减少的问题,计划年后停运,居民正寻求其他应对策略。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“That experience made Friedrich realize that there wasn’t a good rescue plan in place. (那次经历让弗里德里希意识到,当时并没有一个好的救援计划。)”可知,2008年的经历让弗里德里希意识到需要制定一个更好的救援计划。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“However, because of limited resources and fewer volunteers, the group recently decided to only operate within San Juan Capistrano, the city where it is based. (然而,由于资源有限和志愿者人数减少,该组织最近决定仅在其所在的城市圣胡安卡皮斯特拉诺开展活动。)”可知,LART决定只在圣胡安卡皮斯特拉诺开展活动是因为资源有限和志愿者人数减少,即人手不足。故选A。
6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第五段“Although LART was praised for its success in rescuing animals, during one fire, there were problems with communication, which caused delays. The county recognized the team’s hard work during the 2020 fire season, but there were still issues with how the rescue efforts were managed. (尽管LART因成功营救动物而受到赞扬,但在一次火灾中,通信出现了问题,导致延误。县政府认可了该团队在2020年火灾季节的辛勤工作,但在救援工作的管理方式上仍存在问题。)”可知,本段主要讲述了LART在救援工作中面临的问题,如通信问题和救援工作管理方式上的问题。因此,C选项“The problems facing LART.(LART面临的问题)”符合题意。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“‘For now, local horse owners are turning to other strategies (策略) and working to be prepared for emergencies. We understand that it’s important to be ready before fires strike,’ says Friedrich.(弗里德里希说:“目前,当地的马主正在采取其他策略,努力为紧急情况做好准备。我们明白,在火灾发生前做好准备是很重要的。”)”可知,当地的马主正在采取其他策略,为紧急情况做好准备。因此,可以推断出当地的马主可能正在寻找其他应对野火的解决方案。故选D。

C. Doubtful. D. Active.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“So why haven’t we worked towards a smaller class size? Smaller class size is more expensive. More classroom space and more teachers are needed. And in today’s economic climate, smaller class size seems further out of reach than ever.(那么,为什么我们没有朝着缩小班级规模的方向努力呢?缩小班级规模的成本更高。需要更多的教室空间和更多的教师。在当今的经济环境下,缩小班级规模似乎比以往任何时候都更遥不可及。)”可推知,作者认为缩小班级规模是不现实的。故选B。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“What are your ideas on class size? Is it helpful, but not “cost-effective”? Or should educational value outstrip cost-effectiveness? Or does class size not make that much of a difference to show that it is worth the cost?(你对班级规模问题有何见解?小班教学确实有帮助,却并不“划算”?或者说,教育价值是否应该outstrip成本效益?亦或班级规模带来的影响微乎其微,根本不值得投入相应的成本?)”可知,文章讨论缩小班级规模是否值得花费成本,即教育价值是否应该比成本效益更重要,故outstrip意思是“比……更重要”。A. Be more important than比……更重要;B. Depend on依靠;C. Consist of由……组成;D. Compare with与……比较。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第三段“Smaller class size is clearly connected with achievement, according to education professors and National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data. 第二节(满分 25分)
“The second word: contribution” Mr.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2:
Peter looked around.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with ’s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’. ”Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s testpaper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
