Dogs and Humans
About 14,000 years ago, human beings and dogs began a partnership that has lasted through the years. Our interactions (互动) may have begun when wolves came 1 to our homes, attracted by the smell of human garbage, or when humans found wolf puppies and trained them to be loving pets.
Today, through the careful selection of dog parents, humans have created many different types of dogs. Each type has its own look and talents, and its own 2 within human society. Here are three examples of “a dog’s life” in the human world.
The Animal Carer
Today, many hospitals let specially trained dogs in to bring love and cheer to patients. Shaynee the wheaten terrier (小猎犬) is a therapy (治疗) dog. She visits children who are fighting deadly diseases. Dogs like Shaynee help patients feel calm and at peace, which can be 1 in a busy hospital. They help both children and adults stay strong during long hospital stays, and, some suggest, even help them get better.
The Working Dog
Today, some beagles (小猎犬) work in airports for the government. They are part of a program called the Beagle Brigade. A beagle is good for this type of work because of its powerful nose, and ability to track smells. The Beagle Brigade’s job is to smell everything that comes into the country. They 1 officers of illegal fruits, vegetables, and other foods in luggage or in mail. The beagles do the job far better than any human could. Some of the dogs are donated by private owners; others were rescued from animal shelter.
The Household Pet
1 some dogs are working hard, others are free to spend their days resting and playing. Across the world, many pet dogs are treated like children. Many have their own rooms and all the things a dog called want. Some even have their own clothes. Many of these pets spend their days playing, learning to be obedient (顺从的), or even going to yoga classed. Their owners give them the best, and 2 doing so.
1.A.back B.close C.down D.out
2.A.habit B.method C.role D.style
3.A.attractive B.common C.hard D.strange
4.A.advise B.free C.rob D.warn
5.A.Unless B.Because C.Since D.While
6.A.enjoy B.mind C.practice D.suggest

Advice
1 My sister always shouts loudly when she sees animals. This scares them away. How can I teach her to be quieter around animals?
2 I love animals and want to keep a pet, but my parents say I’m not responsible enough. How can I show them I can take care of a pet?
3 I often visit a farm near my home. The farmer has a warning sign that says “Do not pet the horses.” But the horses look so friendly! Should I pet them anyway?
4 I am afraid of big animals like cows and horses. My friends all enjoy visiting farms, but I always feel scared. What should I do?
5 My grandfather has a goat farm. He asked me to help herd the goats, but they keep running in different directions. I don’t know how to do it. Any advice?
A.No, you shouldn’t. The sign is there for your safety and the animals’ safety. Horses can get scared easily and may kick or bite. Instead, you can just stand quietly and watch them. They might come to you if they feel safe.
B.That’s a common problem! You can start by taking small steps. Watch the animals from a distance first. Then slowly get closer with a calm adult beside you. Remember, most farm animals are gentle and won’t hurt you if you stay calm.
C. First, ask the farmer or your grandfather to teach you. Use a long stick or rope to guide them gently. Walk slowly and stay behind the group. Goats usually follow each other, so try to lead the first one and the rest will follow.
D.That’s a great question. You could start by doing small chores at home every day, like feeding a fish or watering plants. If you can do these for a month without being reminded, your parents will see you are responsible. Then you can talk to them about getting a pet.
E. You could teach her an easy rule: “Use your whisper voice near animals.” Explain to her that animals have sensitive ears and loud noises scare them. You can also show her by example—when you are quiet, animals come closer to you!

Passage1
Last Saturday, my class visited the City Farm. It is a special farm in the middle of the city. Many people live nearby, but they don’t have space to keep animals. The City Farm gives them a chance to experience farm life.
We arrived at the farm at 9:30 in the morning. A guide named Lisa showed us around. She told us that the farm has 15 goats, 20 hens, 8 cows, and 2 horses. The animals are all very friendly because they are used to visitors.
First, we went to the goat house. Lisa taught us how to feed the goats with hay. “Don’t feed them with your snacks,” she warned. “Human food is not good for their stomachs.”
Then we visited the hen house. We collected 18 eggs that morning. One of my classmates, Tom, was pecked by a hen because he moved too fast. Lisa told us that we should always move slowly and quietly around animals.
After that, we helped milk the cows. It was not as easy as it looks! We learned that cows need to be milked twice a day—in the morning and in the evening.
At noon, we had a picnic near the horse yard. We watched the horses run in the field. They looked so free and happy.
Before we left at 3:00 p.m., Lisa gave us a special gift—a small plant to take home. “Remember,” she said, “taking care of plants is like taking care of animals. They both need love and patience.”
I will never forget this wonderful day. I learned so much about animals and how to take care of them.

At the first place, a man was making some small rolls. Dad read the sign. “Lüdagun,” he said. Lily looked around. “Donkey? No!” she said. Mum laughed. “There is no donkey,” she said. “That’s just the name of the food.” Harry wanted to try it. He asked for a small piece and took a bite. “Nice,” he said.
Then, they saw a place with big cups of ice in different colours. “Baobing!” Mum said. “Good for a hot day.” Harry got a red one made with strawberries. It was cold and sweet. “Oh no! My head!” Harry said. “My head hurts too!” Lily said. Mum smiled. “That’s because it’s very cold! When you eat cold food fast, your head can hurt.”
After that, they saw apples and strawberries on sticks. “ !” a woman said. “Sweet and hard!” Harry and Lily both liked them.
After visiting the food street, they walked to the park nearby. They stayed in the park for a while, enjoying the fresh air. Then they walked back to the hotel together, with the smells and tastes of the food street still in their minds.

Passage2
A Day at the Food Street
Harry was on holiday in Beijing with his mum, dad, and his sister Lily. Today, they went to a big food street near a park. There were many smells and colours, and Harry felt excited.
