Most people fly to Xi’an, but my father chose the slow train. It was our first family 1 in three years, and he wanted us to enjoy the way as well as the place.
We got to the 2 early in the morning. The train was not fast, but our seats were 3 , and there was a small table between us. At first my brother was 4 because he had nothing to do. Somewhere near Luoyang we saw a 6 after the rain. It was so beautiful that everyone in the carriage turned to look.
My mother took out a book about the city. “You must visit the old city wall,” she said. “It is 7 long—more than thirteen kilometres.” She also told us that a good 8 could show us the best places to eat.

When we arrived, an old woman next to us gave my sister a small red 10 as a gift. My sister put it around her neck at once.

【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · 人物特写 · 373 词】
Many people think a good guide is a person who talks a lot. Old Chen, our 1 in the old town, is 2 the best story-teller I have ever met. He talked for three hours without stopping, and he never lost any of us.
Chen has worked in the town for thirty years. He always walks backwards in front of the group so that everyone can hear him and see his hands. “If I walk forwards, you will only see my back,” he said with a smile. “A good story is better than a beautiful back.”
The town is famous for its 3 buildings. Some of the houses are more than four hundred years old, and their walls are still strong. Chen told us that the town used to be much bigger. “There was a 4 on that hill,” he said, “and a high 5 near the river. Now nothing is left but stones.”
Then he told us about two families. They could not agree 6 each other about a small piece of land, and they began to 7 for it every spring. Neither side would give in. One autumn, the two mothers sat down together and talked for a whole afternoon. They found a way out, and the two families became friends. Chen said his grandmother had told him this story to show him that a real 8 is not about beating others.
Before we left, Chen gave each of us a small map he had drawn 9 . It was not beautiful, but every street on it was in the right place. “A map you draw with your own hand will always 10 you of the streets you walked,” he said.
We asked him what made a guide great. “A good guide must know when to be quiet,” he answered. “People do not come here only to listen to one person. They come to touch the old walls and to feel that time is passing 11 . If I talk too much, they will remember my words but 12 the town.”

I had never slept in a tent until last July. My uncle said that camping was the best way to get close to nature, so we 1 our bags and drove to a lake four hours away.
We put up the tent near a small 2 . The ground was hard, and it took us two hours to make the tent stand. By the time we finished, we were tired and hungry, but the view made us forget everything: a wide lake, green hills and a 3 that was turning gold in the west.
At night the temperature dropped fast. I put on all the clothes I had brought, but I was still 4 . My uncle laughed and said, “A first night under the stars is always cold. You will get used to it.” He was right. I opened my sleeping bag and fell asleep 5 .
At about three in the morning I woke up because of a strange sound. I opened the tent and looked out. The lake was silver under the moon, and hundreds of stars were watching me. I held my 6 and did not move for a long time. It was so 7 that I could hear my own heart.
In the morning we made breakfast over a small fire. My uncle told me that he had come to this place when he was a boy, and that the 8 had not changed much. “Every year a few more people come,” he said, “but the water is still clear.”
On the second evening we met a family from another 9 . Their son was the same age as me, and we spent the whole evening talking about school and football. Before they left, the boy gave me a small stone from the lake. “Take it home,” he said. “It will 10 you of this place.” I put it in my pocket 11 , because I did not want to lose it.
Now the stone stands on my desk. When I look at it, I can see the silver lake and hear the water again. Camping did not give me a soft bed or a warm room. It gave me something better: hours without a phone, a 12 night sky, and a friend I would never have met in the city. Next summer I hope to 13 here again. 第 9 篇 Why We Take Photos
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · 议论文 · 376 词】
When my grandmother travelled, she took ten photos in ten days. Today a traveller may take 1 hundred photos before lunch. Is this a good thing?
Some people say no. They believe that taking photos makes us stop looking. A person who holds a phone in front of his face sees the world through a small screen. He may 2 what the wind feels like and what the food smells like. On a trip last year, I watched a man spend twenty minutes taking photos of the sea. He never once took off his shoes and walked into the water.
Others say 3 . Photos help us remember. My family moved to a new city when I was nine, and I cannot 4 the colour of our old kitchen now. But one photo on the wall shows my mother cooking by the window. Every time I see it, the whole room comes back to me, 5 the smell of soup.
The truth, perhaps, is that photos are like notes. A 6 is not the same as the book, but it helps you find the page you want. In the same way, a photo is not the holiday, but it can 7 us of the hour, the light and the person we were with. A photo with no story behind it, however, will not stay long in our memory.
So what should we do? I think we should take a few photos, and then put the phone away. Take one photo of the person who is laughing, take one of the view you do not want to 8 , and then sit down and watch the sea with your own eyes.
A holiday is measured in feelings, not in pictures. The most beautiful moment of my last trip had no photo at all: we were sitting on a stone wall, eating biscuits, and watching the 9 turn red. I could not 10 that moment on my phone even if I wanted to. But I have never 11 it, and I never will.
Next time you travel, try this: look first and take photos 12 . Ask yourself what you will remember when the photos are 13 . The answer is usually a face, a sound or a smell. A photo is only a 14 ; the feeling is the holiday 15 .

第 10 篇 The Hill We Did Not Climb
【Unit 1 提升篇 · Unit 1 · 记叙文 · 464 词】
On the third day of our holiday, my father woke us up at five and said, “Today we will climb the hill behind the 1 .” My brother and I jumped out of bed at once, because we had looked at that hill for two days.
The path was narrow and full of stones. We climbed slowly, and after an hour my legs began to hurt. My brother, who is three years younger, was already far behind. He had begun to 2 the stones with his feet: he was tired and angry.
At eight o’clock we were still less than halfway up. Then the weather changed. Grey clouds came 3 us from the west, and the wind grew strong. My father looked at the sky for a long time. “We must go down,” he said.
My brother could not believe it. “But I want to reach the top!” he shouted. “We have come so far. We cannot 4 now.” For a few minutes nobody spoke. Then my father said, “A mountain will still be here next year. A person who is 5 on a mountain may not be.”
Going down was harder than going up. The stones were wet, and twice I nearly fell. My father held my brother’s hand the whole way. When we reached the foot of the hill, the rain began, and we ran to a small 6 to wait.
Inside, an old man gave us hot tea. He said that he had lived there for forty years and had climbed the hill more than a hundred times. “There is no 7 in climbing in bad weather,” he said. “The mountain is not 8 you; you only need to know when to stop.”
We spent the afternoon playing cards and telling stories. My brother fell asleep on a chair. I looked out of the window at the rain and thought about the word “ 9 ”. I had always believed that a person who gives up is weak. That afternoon I learned something different: to stop in time is also a kind of 10 .
The next morning the sky was clear. We did not climb the hill, because we had to go home. But nobody felt sad. On the train my brother said, “Next year I will be taller and stronger. Then I will stand on the top.” My father smiled and 11 his head. Sometimes a holiday does not give you the thing you wanted. It gives you something you needed: a lesson about 12 and about listening to the 13 in your body.
Two years have passed, and we still have not stood on the top of that hill. But I no longer think of that day as a 14 . When something looks too hard, I remember my father’s words. I 15 , look around, and then decide what to do next.

第 11 篇 Cleaning Up the Balcony
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 318 词】
Last Saturday my mother stood on our balcony and said, “This place looks like a 1 tip.” She was right. Old boxes, broken chairs and paper bags were everywhere, and there was 2 to walk.
“Today we clean it up,” said my father. He brought out three big bags and gave each of us a pair of 3 . Then he said, “Work 4 , and don’t keep anything you don’t use.”
We started at nine. The first thing we found was a box of my grandmother’s paper-cuts. “Don’t throw them away,” said my mother. “She made them when she was young.” So we decided to 5 them up and put them in the living room.
At eleven my brother found his old toy car under a pile of newspapers. He was so happy that he began to play with it. “You should be working!” I said. But my mother said, “Let him play. A toy that gives a child 6 should not be 7 away.”
My brother also 8 my scissors without asking, and we had a small quarrel. My mother stopped us and said, “One pair of scissors, two people. Talk about it.” In the end we took turns, and the quarrel ended. I was 9 at how easily we found an answer.
We kept working 10 the sun went down. By six o’clock there was nothing on the floor but two chairs and a small table. Then my mother brought a 11 of biscuits and four cups of tea, and we sat down together. Looking up, I could see the 12 turning pink over the roofs.
“Look,” said my mother. “Now we have a new room.” She was right. It was 13 the same balcony, but it seemed twice as big.

Last month my parents told us that we would move to a new 1 . It is on the fifth floor of a tall 2 , about twenty minutes from my old school.
The day of our 3 was the busiest day of my life. In the morning three men carried our boxes down the stairs and put them into a big truck. My mother stood at the door and counted every box. “ 4 we lose one, we cannot find it again,” she said.
I had to 5 up my own things. I put my books in one box and my clothes in another. When a box was full, I sat on it to make it smaller, and then I wrote my name on the top. My little sister wanted to help, but she only 6 more trouble: she put my toothbrush into the box with the kitchen 7 .
The new flat is on the fifth floor, so we did not have to climb the stairs—we used the 8 . My sister loved it and pressed the button again and again. The man who carried our sofa said, “I have been doing this job for 9 fifteen years, and I have never seen a child so interested in a lift.”
In the evening we were too tired to cook, so we ate some 10 and drank hot milk. We sat on the floor because the chairs were still in boxes. My sister asked to 11 my old desk for her room, and I said yes.
“Do you miss the old house?” my mother asked. “A little,” I said. “But this one has a big window, and the whole flat 12 of new wood.”
Now it is three weeks later. I know the way to school, and I have met 13 of our new neighbours. The flat is smaller than the old house, but it is 14 and bright. My mother says a home is not a place but a feeling. I think she is right. When the family is together, 15 we live can feel like home.

第 13 篇 Dumplings on a Cold Night
【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 404 词】
It was the coldest night of the winter. The wind 1 against the window, and snow covered the street outside. My grandmother said, “Tonight we make dumplings.” Nobody said no.
My job was to cut the vegetables. I washed them, put them on a 2 , and cut them into small pieces with a 3 . My grandmother watched me and said, “Slowly. A good dumpling needs small pieces.” Then she 4 some salt and oil to the meat and mixed them together. The 5 filled the whole kitchen, and my little brother came in to see what we were doing.
My father made the wrappers. He took some 6 , pressed it flat with his hand, and 7 it with a stick. At first the wrappers were thick and ugly. “Practice makes perfect,” said my grandmother, and she was right. After twenty minutes my father’s wrappers were almost round.
My mother was the fastest of us all. She put the filling in the middle, closed the wrapper and gave it a quick press. In one hour we had filled three 8 and still had not finished.
Then my brother tried to help. He made a dumpling that looked like a small ball. We all laughed, but my grandmother did not. “Every family has ugly dumplings,” she said. “They taste the same.” She put his dumpling beside the others 9 so that he would not feel sad. “One day,” she told him, “ 10 will all make dumplings together in your own home.”
At eight o’clock we sat around the table. The dumplings were 11 cooked, and the steam rose in front of our faces. My grandmother told us that when she was young, her family could eat dumplings only once a year. “We had no money for meat,” she said. “We used vegetables and a little oil. But we were happy, because we were together.”
I looked around the table at my family and felt a kind of 12 that I cannot describe with words. Outside it was still snowing, and the night was long. But inside, the kitchen was warm, and nobody wanted to leave.
Now, whenever the weather turns cold, I think of that night. A house can be small and old; it can be cold and noisy. But if there is good 13 in the kitchen and a family around the table, then it is a 14 place to be. I hope my children will one day make dumplings with their grandmother, 15 they live.

【Unit 2 基础篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 414 词】
Last week my father asked me to help him clean the study. “There is too much in this room,” he said. “We must cover it with a cloth and keep only what we use.”
The first thing we found was an old radio. It was brown, and one corner was 1 —it had not worked for years. I carried it to the door, ready to put it with the 2 .
“Wait,” said my father. He sat down on the floor and put his hand on the radio. “My grandfather bought this in 1978,” he said. “For ten years it was the only way for our family to hear the news. Your grandmother listened to it every evening while she did the 3 . When I was a boy, I used to sit beside her and 4 about the world outside.”
I did not know what to say. I had always thought of the radio as a useless 5 . Now it seemed like a page of our family story.
“Can it be 6 ?” I asked.
“Perhaps,” said my father. “But it needs a new part, and the part may be hard to find.”
We decided to try. My father found the name of a small shop in an old 7 near the market. The shopkeeper was an old man with white hair. He looked at the radio for a minute and said, “I have not seen one of these for 8 twenty years.”
He took out a box of small parts and chose one. Then he used a 9 to cut two wires and connected them with a drop of 10 . “Now wait five minutes,” he said.
Five minutes later he turned the button. At first there was only a noise. Then, suddenly, a clear voice came out of the radio: “... and now the weather for tomorrow.” My father stood up and laughed like a child. “It works!” he said.
That evening we put the radio on the shelf in the study. My father said we would listen to the evening news together every day, just as his family did. I looked at the brown box and felt 11 . It is not a beautiful thing, and it may break again next month. But it is not 12 any more.

第 16 篇 Sharing the Housework
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · 议论文 · 409 词】
When I was ten, I thought the house cleaned itself. Every morning the floor was clean, the 1 were full of hot water, and my clothes were waiting on the chair. I did not know who had done all this. I only knew that if I could not find my socks, I could ask my mother.
Then one day my mother went to 2 my grandmother in another city. She would stay there for a week, so my father and I stayed at home.
The first morning was fine. The second morning was a 3 . There was no hot water, the bin was full, and my school shirt was still dirty. At six in the evening my father came home, looked at the kitchen, and sat down. “Now I understand,” he said slowly. “Your mother does not clean the house. She 4 it.”
We decided to share the work. We wrote a 5 on the fridge: my father bought food and washed the dishes; I cleaned the floor and took out the 6 ; and we both did the washing at the weekend.
At first I was slow. I could not 7 the washing machine properly, and once I washed a red shirt together with the white clothes. But after three days I could do it in ten minutes. My father said it did not 8 if a shirt was not perfect. “What matters is that you try,” he said.
We also 9 up the kitchen every evening. I did not enjoy it, but I began to notice small things: how long rice takes, why the window must be opened after cooking, and how many minutes the water needs to get hot.
When my mother came back, the house was not as clean as before, and the dinner was 10 too salty. She looked around for a minute. Then she smiled and said, “You two have learned something.”
She was right. A home is not a hotel where somebody serves you; it is a place where everybody works. On Saturday we did the cleaning 11 —nobody helped us, and nobody told us what to do. We did not stop 12 the whole flat was tidy. Doing housework is not only about clean floors. It also teaches us to 13 the people who do things for us quietly every day. 第 17 篇 The Note on the Fridge
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 439 词】
When my mother went away on a business trip, my father and I stayed at home. He could cook only two dishes: eggs with tomatoes and noodles. On the first evening he said, “We can eat out.” But we both knew that eating out every day was too expensive.
On Monday morning I found a 1 on the fridge. It said: “Noodles are in the blue box. Heat them for three minutes. — Dad.”
On Tuesday there was another one: “I have put some 2 in the fridge. Eat one if you feel hungry. — Dad.”
On Wednesday the note was longer: “A man will come at four to repair the tap in the 3 . Please open the door for him and be polite.”
I began to wait for the notes. Reading them became the best part of my day. My father is a quiet man; he does not 4 his feelings in words. But on those small pieces of paper I could read his love.
On Thursday I decided to write back. I put a 5 under his note: “Your noodles are better than the school’s. I have cleaned the 6 . — Your son.” When he came home, he read it twice and put it in his pocket.
On Friday evening we watched an old 7 together. During the break he said, “When I was a boy, my father worked in another city and came home only twice a year. We had no phones then. We sent 8 to each other once a month.”
“Did you miss him?” I asked.
“Every day,” he said. “But the letters made the distance shorter. Each one took a long 9 before it arrived, and I read it ten times.”
I thought about his words for a long time. Today we can send a message in one second, but it disappears 10 ; a note on the fridge stays there for a week. Perhaps that is why it can carry more.
On Sunday my mother came back. She read the notes one by one, and then she said to me, “In ten years you will forget what you ate this week, but you will not 11 these notes.”
She was right. The notes are still in a box in my desk. When I open it, I can see my father’s slow, careful 12 , and I can hear his voice: “Noodles are in the blue box.” A home is not made of walls; it is made of small things that 13 you of being loved. 第 18 篇 Home Is More Than Four Walls
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · 议论文 · 380 词】
Last year my family moved three times in twelve months. First we lived in a small flat near the bus 1 , then in a room above a shop, and now in an 2 on the ninth floor. A friend asked me, “Do you still know where your home is?”
It is a good question. Many people think a home is a building. For them, home is a 3 with a big window, a warm 4 and a kitchen that 5 of freshly cooked rice. These things are pleasant, and I like them too. But if a home were only a building, then moving would be like losing everything.
Others say a home is a place with familiar 6 . I agree with this to some degree. A neighbour who says hello, a shopkeeper who knows what you want, a small square where children play—these things make a street feel like 7 . But neighbours change too, and people move away.
So what is left? I believe a home is made of habits and memories. It is the smell of your mother’s cooking, the sound of your father’s key in the door at six, the place where your schoolbag always hangs. Wherever you live, these small things 8 with you. That is why a person can feel at home in a hotel room, and why a large house can feel cold and strange.
There is one more thing, and perhaps it 9 most. Home is where people know you. When my little brother is ill, somebody brings him soup. When I fail an exam, somebody asks me why and then tells me a 10 . When my father works late, the light is still on for him. A building gives you a 11 ; a family gives you a place in the world.
So do not worry too much about the walls. Make your room clean and pleasant: every Saturday we 12 up the flat together, and my mother 13 supper while we worked. But remember that you do not need a big house to have a good home. You need people who wait for you, and habits that hold you. A home is not a building; it is a place where people know 14 , and where you know them. If you have those, then 15 the walls look like, you are already home.

第 19 篇 A Room of My Own
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 503 词】
Until last spring I shared a bedroom with my younger sister. We had two beds, one desk and one lamp between us. Every evening there was a small 1 : who would use the desk first, whose light would be turned off first.
“When you are older,” my mother said, “you may have a room of your own.” But our flat had only two bedrooms, and one of them was my parents’.
Then my uncle moved to another city, and his small flat was free. My parents talked about it for 2 weeks. In the end we decided to 3 in. It was on the first floor of the same 4 , only two minutes from our old door.
I could not believe it when my mother said I could have the small room at the end of the corridor. On the day we moved, I carried my own boxes—three of them—and put them on the floor. Then I stood at the door and looked at the empty room. It had one window, one lamp and a strong 5 of paint.
The first evening it was quiet, and I did not like it. I could not hear my sister turning over in bed, and I missed my mother’s voice through the wall. I went to the door, and then I went back and sat down. “This is mine,” I said to 6 . But I still felt like a stranger.
The next day I made a 7 . First I cleaned the window, and then I put the desk under it. On the wall I hung a map, a photo of my grandmother’s village and a picture of the 8 that my cousin had drawn. In one corner I put a small 9 where I could keep the books I read at night, and by the bed I laid my other books.
After a week the room was mine. Now I study here, and when I am tired I look out at the street: children playing, old men talking, a woman hanging clothes. From this window I can see the whole 10 life of our little area. I also 11 up the boxes that we no longer needed and pushed them under the bed.
But I do not stay in my room all the time. My sister still comes in to 12 my books, and every Tuesday we watch a 13 together on my little desk. Then she goes back to her own bed, and I hear my mother’s steps in the corridor.
So I have learned two things. A room of my own is a good place to be alone with my thoughts. And a home is not a competition for space. The walls can be new, the room can be small, but the voices behind the wall are the same. When I lie in the dark and hear my family breathing, I know that this small room and the other rooms together are 14 one home. Perhaps that is why I sleep better here than anywhere else. It is mine, and it is 15 , too.

第 20 篇 The Treasure Hunt in the Rain
【Unit 2 提升篇 · Unit 2 · 记叙文 · 439 词】
My little brother is seven, and he had been ill for two weeks. He could not go out, and he was tired of drawing and reading. On Saturday morning the rain was heavy, and he looked out of the window without saying a word.
“What about a 1 hunt?” I said. “We can hide things around the flat and draw a map.”
His eyes became bright. In ten minutes we had a 2 on the back of a calendar page: the kitchen, the balcony, the corridor and my parents’ 3 . I drew a small cross where a “treasure” was waiting, and he had to 4 it out with a pencil. Then he started to read the map.
The first treasure was a small bag of 5 behind the rice box. The second was a pair of 6 under the sofa — I put them there so that he could cut out the next clue. The third was a ball of 7 and a note: “Now look under my bed.”
He ran from one room to another, laughing. In the 8 he found a note that said “Look in the place where we keep our coats.” He counted every step and read every word. It took him almost an hour to reach the last place, and he was 9 and hot when he got there.
The last treasure was a small box. Inside it were three things: a photo of the two of us at the seaside, a stone from the lake and a card I had made the night before. On the card I wrote: “You are the best brother in the world. When you are well again, we will go to see the 10 together.”
He read the card twice. Then he put the stone in 11 pocket and said, “Can we play again tomorrow?”
“Of course,” I said. “But tomorrow you will hide the treasures, and I will look for them.”
That evening my mother asked him what the best part of the day was. I thought he would say the sweets or the ball. But he said, “The map. I could see the whole flat on one piece of paper. It 12 me where every room is.”
I was surprised. I had made the map to give him something to do. It turned out that I had given him something better: a new way of seeing his own home. And I learned something too—that a rainy day is not a 13 day. It can be the best day of the week, if someone takes the time to 14 you a game. A flat with four rooms can hold a whole 15 if you look at it in the right way.
