I nodded at that time without thinking the weather. I’ve never imagined I’d be a helicopter parent. I thought kids were strong, until I had my own children and discovered how fragile (脆弱的) they could be. We had many emergency room visits before Barton was 6. My concern increased gradually and some days I’d forbid my children to leave the house if I thought it was too windy. But since this trip was quite important to Barton, I tried to reduce my concern. “The news is just from one little AccuWeather forecast station,” I comforted myself two days before his weekend. From there I became very dysphoric. That afternoon, I called the activity leader, “They’re saying the storm and snow will be over 24 inches.” “Mom, do you know that skiing need snow?” “I really don’t think you should go,” I told my son. “But everyone’s going,” he said. I called some moms whose children had great influence in class. If those kids were not permitted to go, the rest would fall like a row of dominoes “They’re all going to die,” I said, puzzled that I seemed to be the only mother who understood the potential danger. But nobody agreed with me and finally I thought I could relax. But teenagers don’t always do what they’re told. As leaving time neared, text messages informed my son that all the children were going on the trip. Barton picked up his snowboard and headed for the front door. At that moment, I climbed down the bottom rung (梯子的横档) of the parenting ladder. 24. Which of the following can best describe the author according to Paragraph 2? A. Easy-going. B. Patient. C. Optimistic. D. Overprotective. 25. What does the underlined word “dysphoric” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Relaxed. B. Anxious. C. Happy. D. Embarrassed. 26. Why did the author call some moms? A. To persuade them to cancel the trip. B. To tell them about the change of time. C. To ask them for advice. D. To remind them to watch over their children. 27. How did the author feel after Barton went on the trip? A. She suddenly felt relieved. B. She was disappointed at Barton’s choice. C. She learned more about being parents. D. She felt like a failure. C Some people proudly say that they have read piles of books and read them quickly in a year. But there is power in reading slowly. Chinese-American author Yiyun Li tells her students, “I don’t want you to read 100 pages an hour. I want you to read three pages an hour.” That’s the speed Li is happy to read at, even if she is rereading a familiar text. “I want to savour a book, which means I give myself just 10 pages a day of any book to experience it. I was never a fast reader but I read more slowly than I used to. This is partly to savour every word.” These words hit a nerve because I am a typical impatient reader, trying to have finished a book as soon as I start. So, in an effort to follow Li’s advice, I, a forty-year-old man, start with The Years by Annie Ernaux, and Alan Garner’ s Where Shall We Run To? I spend about 45 minutes most days with the Ernaux, reading 30 or so pages; less on Garner because it’s shorter. This is probably still too fast, but old habits are hard to break. I’m struck by how they seem to talk to each other, Garner’s experience of growing up in Britain during the war agreeing with elements of Ernaux’s rural French childhood. The same thing happened with my next Ernaux, I Remain in Darkness, which I read alongside Catherine Newman’s We All Want Impossible Things. I stay longer in Newman’ pain, which feels more like I was sharing her experience. Again, the books, although very different, feel as if they were part of a conversation. By now I’m two months into my experiment, and have slowed down to Li’s 10 or so daily pages. Taking my time with several books at once feels free; as if I have permission to pick up books I’ve spent years meaning to approach. I really think Li is onto something. Oh, and I’m at 85 books for the year, not that I’m counting. 28. What does Yiyun Li advise her students to do? A. Read 100 pages of books daily. B. Focus on writers’ experiences. C. Find joy in the art of slow reading. D. Absorb new words while reading. 29. What was the writer’s reading habit? A. Repeating reading familiar texts. B. Finishing a book as soon as possible. C. Sharing the books with others. D. Reading several books at the same time. 30. What did the writer find when he followed Li’s advice? A. His reading speed was faster than before. B. There might be a bond between books. C. It was easy to break old reading habits. D. Two months was enough to finish a book. 31. What is the writer’s attitude towards savouring a book? A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Anxious. D. Unclear. D As trees turn gold and red in autumn, scientists are debating exactly what those colors are for. For decades, textbooks claimed that autumn colors were just a byproduct of dying leaves. “I had always assumed that autumn leaves were waste baskets,” said ecologist Dr. David Wilkinson. “That’s what I was told as a student.” But in recent years, scientists have recognized that autumn colors probably play an important role in the life of many trees. Dr. William Hamilton, from Oxford University, proposed that bright autumn leaves contain a message: they warn insects to leave them alone. In the fall, insects choose trees where they will lay their eggs. Then the next spring, the baby insects feed on the tree, often with damaging results. A tree can discourage these insects with poisons. Dr. Hamilton assumed that trees with strong defenses might be able to protect themselves even further by letting egg-laying insects know what was in store for their eggs. By producing brilliant autumn colors, the trees advertised their deadliness. As insects evolved (进化) to avoid the brightest leaves, natural selection favored trees that could become even brighter. The leaf-signal theory has drawn criticism, most recently from Dr. William Hoch at the University of Wisconsin, who argues that bright leaves appear on trees that have no insects to warn off. His recent work suggests that fall colors serve mainly as a sunscreen. Autumn leaves cannot capture (吸收) all the sunlight striking them, and the leftover energy can build up in the leaf and cause damage to its tissue. Anthocyanins (花青素) that produce red and orange colors appear to protect autumn leaves by blocking some of the sunlight. “You may have a few instances where insects have some sort of relationship to color changes,” Dr. Hoch said, “but it’s almost certainly not a broad-based explanation. It doesn’t hold any water.” These arguments have not swayed (使改变看法) Dr. Hamilton’s supporters, who argue that the leaf-signal theory is still worth investigating. But both sides agree that the debate has been useful, because it has given them deeper admiration for this time of year. 32. What did Wilkinson present about autumn leaves? A. A new discovery. B. A wide-ranging debate. C. A commonly-held view. D. A theoretical assumption. 33. What did Hamilton suggest about the function of bright autumn leaves? A. To attract certain insects. B. To prevent trees from harm. C. To store nutrients for the future. D. To maintain ecological balance. 34. Which best explains the underlined part “hold any water” in paragraph 5? A. Make any sense. B. Drive any force. C. Draw any attention. D. Raise any argument. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The sun’s hot touch can burn tree leaves B. Mother nature favors the most colorful leaves C. When they became lab partners in chemistry class, they were thrilled. Working together meant more time together, and they were sure they’d ace (击败) the class. However, things didn’t go as planned. Leo was careful and organized. He always read instructions twice, measured chemicals precisely, and cleaned up immediately. Sam was the opposite: easygoing and often in a hurry. He would mix solutions without double-checking, leave test tubes unwashed, and forget to record data. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine,” Sam would say. Leo didn’t want to seem like a control freak (控制狂), so he’d sigh and quietly clean up after him, thinking it was a small price for such a good friend. Then came the day of the practical exam. They had to complete an experiment and write a report. Sam poured liquids quickly without carefully checking the amounts. Leo felt uneasy but held back, not wanting to cause a conflict. When the results didn’t match what they expected, Sam changed the data to make it look correct. “It’s close enough,” he whispered. Leo hesitated but finally agreed, feeling a knot in his stomach. A week later, the teacher returned their report with a serious look. On it was a bright red “F” and a note: “Data does not match experimental results. See me after class.” Leo’s heart sank. He had worked so hard, and now his grade was in trouble. All because he had let Sam’s careless attitude slide again. His usual “go with the flow” approach had failed him. After class, Sam walked up to Leo, his usual smile gone. “I’m sorry. He had asked for my permission. If those kids were not permitted to go, the rest would fall like a row of dominoes (多米诺骨牌). “They’re all going to die,” I said, puzzled that I seemed to be the only mother who understood the potential danger. 【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. C 【解析】 【导语】文章主要讲述了作者因担心天气危险试图阻止儿子滑雪旅行,但最终儿子仍成行的故事。 【24题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“I’ve never imagined I’d be a helicopter parent. I thought kids were strong, until I had my own children and discovered how fragile (脆弱的) they could be.(我从未想过自己会成为直升机父母。我以为孩子们很坚强,直到我有了自己的孩子,才发现他们是如此脆弱)”以及后文作者对孩子的过度担忧和阻止孩子外出的行为可推知,作者是一个过度保护孩子的父母。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。 根据第三段中“That afternoon, I called the activity leader, “They’re saying the storm and snow will be over 24 inches.”(那天下午,我打电话给活动负责人,“他们说暴风雪会超过24英寸。”)”以及后文作者试图阻止孩子外出可推知,作者此时的心情是焦虑的,因此“dysphoric”意为“焦虑的”,与anxious同义。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。 根据第七段中“I called some moms whose children had great influence in class. If those kids were not permitted to go, the rest would fall like a row of dominoes (多米诺骨牌).(我打电话给一些妈妈,她们的孩子在班上很有影响力。如果那些孩子不被允许去,其余的孩子就会像多米诺骨牌一样倒下)”和第八段““They’re all going to die,” I said, puzzled that I seemed to be the only mother who understood the potential danger. But nobody agreed with me and finally I thought I could relax.(“他们全都要出事了。” C Some people proudly say that they have read piles of books and read them quickly in a year. A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Anxious. D. Unclear. 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了作者在阅读上的改变。作者以前是典型的急躁读者,现在开始享受慢阅读。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Chinese-American author Yiyun Li tells her students, “I don’t want you to read 100 pages an hour. I want you to read three pages an hour.” (美籍华裔作家李翊云告诉她的学生:“我不希望你们一小时读100页。我要你一小时读三页书。”)”可知,李翊云建议她的学生从慢读的艺术中寻找乐趣。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“These words hit a nerve because I am a typical impatient reader, trying to have finished a book as soon as I start.(这些话触动了我的神经,因为我是一个典型的没有耐心的读者,一开始就想把一本书读完)”可知,作者的阅读习惯是尽快读完一本书。故选B项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“I’m struck by how they seem to talk to each other, Garner’s experience of growing up in Britain during the war agreeing with elements of Ernaux’s rural French childhood.(我被他们彼此交谈的方式所震惊,Garner在战争期间在英国长大的经历与Ernaux在法国农村的童年非常吻合)”和第五段“The same thing happened with my next Ernaux, I Remain in Darkness, which I read alongside Catherine Newman’s We All Want Impossible Things. I stay longer in Newman’ pain, which feels more like I was sharing her experience. Again, the books, although very different, feel as if they were part of a conversation.(同样的事情也发生在我的下一本小说《我留在黑暗中》中,我和Catherine Newman的《我们都想要不可能的东西》一起读。我在Newman的痛苦中停留的时间更长,感觉更像是我在分享她的经历。再一次,这两本书,虽然非常不同,但感觉好像它们是对话的一部分)”可知,当作者听从李的建议时,他发现了书与书之间可能有某种联系。故选B项。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Taking my time with several books at once feels free; as if I have permission to pick up books I’ve spent years meaning to approach. I really think Li is onto something. (花时间同时看几本书感觉很自由;就好像我被允许拿起我多年来想要读的书一样。我真的认为李是对的。)”可知,作者认为李是对的,说明作者对细细品味一本书的态度是支持的。故选A项。 D As trees turn gold and red in autumn, scientists are debating exactly what those colors are for. Autumn leaves are just nature’s waste baskets D. Those brilliant fall outfits may be saving trees 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于秋天树叶变色的原因的新观点,即鲜艳的秋叶可能在树木的生命中扮演着重要的角色。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“For decades, textbooks claimed that autumn colors were just a byproduct of dying leaves. “I had always assumed that autumn leaves were waste baskets,” said ecologist Dr. David Wilkinson. “That’s what I was told as a student.” (数十年来,教科书一直声称秋天的色彩只是枯叶凋零的自然结果。“我一直认为秋天的树叶就是垃圾袋而已,”生态学家大卫·威尔金森博士说道。“这是我作为学生时所接受的观点。”)”可知,威尔金森博士表达的是过去一直以来人们普遍接受的观点。故选D。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Dr. William Hamilton, from Oxford University, proposed that bright autumn leaves contain a message: they warn insects to leave them alone.(牛津大学的威廉·汉密尔顿博士提出,鲜艳的秋叶包含了一个信息:它们警告昆虫不要靠近)”以及第三段中“Dr. Hamilton assumed that trees with strong defenses might be able to protect themselves even further by letting egg-laying insects know what was in store for their eggs. By producing brilliant autumn colors, the trees advertised their deadliness.(汉密尔顿博士认为,防御能力强的树木可能能够通过让产卵昆虫知道它们的卵将面临什么,从而进一步保护自己。通过产生鲜艳的秋色,树木宣传了它们的致命性)”可知,汉密尔顿博士认为鲜艳的秋叶的功能是保护树木免受昆虫的伤害。故选B。 【34题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“You may have a few instances where insects have some sort of relationship to color changes(你可能会遇到一些例子,昆虫和颜色变化有某种关系)”以及“but it’s almost certainly not a broad-based explanation.(但这几乎肯定不是一个广泛的解释)”可知,Dr. Hoch 认为昆虫与叶子颜色变化的关系并非普遍解释,该说法不成立。故划线词意思是“站得住脚,有道理”。故选A。 Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list.___36___. Fear can also keep us from hunting for the things in life—like following our dreams, and developing important relationships.___37___. Experience fear.I used to be very afraid of speaking in public. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so full that I wouldn’t be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it wasn’t that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I have in my mind.___38___. Create space. The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn’t accomplished by ignoring the fear.___39___. In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse (颠倒) the “fight or escape” response in the body. Control the breath and feel the fear.Once we admit the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breath, making it just a little bit longer. We feel how fear shows in the body.___40___. With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that we can replace a fearful thought with a positive one. A. Fear no longer holds us back. B. Fear can even destroy our life. C. Fear is more than just physically unpleasant. D. I have some ideas of how to be free from fear. E. Space is created only when we admit fear exists. F. G 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文讲述了恐惧情绪的害处以及几个缓解恐惧的方法。 【36题详解】 根据上文“Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list.(在我们可能经历的许多不愉快情绪中,恐惧可能是名列榜首)”以及下文“Fear can also keep us from hunting for the things in life—like following our dreams, and developing important relationships.(恐惧也会阻止我们追逐生活中的事情,比如追逐梦想,发展重要的关系)”可知,恐惧会阻碍我们追求真正应该追求的东西。由此可知,C项“恐惧不仅仅是身体上的不舒服”符合语境。故选C。 【37题详解】 根据下文“Experience fear.(体验恐惧)”,“Create space.(创建空间)”,“Control the breath and feel the fear.(控制呼吸,感受恐惧)”以及“With practice.(练习)”可知,文中给出的这些都是缓解恐惧的方法。由此可知,D项“我有一些关于缓解恐惧的方法”符合语境,能起到承上启下的作用。故选D。 【38题详解】 根据“Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I have in my mind.(我害怕的事情在现实中从来没有我脑海中那么糟糕)”可知,内心觉得恐惧的事情实际上根本没有这么糟糕。由此可知,F项“所以缓解恐惧的一个方法是迫使自己做害怕的事情”符合语境,也和前文中的“Experience fear(体验恐惧)”相呼应。故选F。 【39题详解】 根据上文“Create space. The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isn’t accomplished by ignoring the fear.(创造空间。 My husband and I were on our flight to America. “I’m sorry. I ruined it.” Sam said quietly. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: “Let’s talk to the teacher together,” Leo said. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: To their surprise, the teacher appreciated their honesty and let them do the experiment again. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “Let’s talk to the teacher together,” Leo said. Sam nodded, guilt still written on his face. Taking a deep breath, they walked to the teacher’s office together. To their relief, the teacher didn’t shout at them. Instead, she listened patiently as Leo explained what had really happened. “Honesty matters more than a perfect grade,” she said with a gentle smile, “but you need to learn to be responsible partners.” Hearing this, they both lowered their heads, vowing to be more responsible in the future. To their surprise, the teacher appreciated their honesty and let them do the experiment again. The next afternoon, they worked side by side in the lab. Leo carefully measured every chemical while Sam recorded the data with great care, double-checking each number. “This time, we do it together,” Sam said with a determined look. When they handed in their new report, they knew it was truly their best work. From this experience, they learned that a real friendship is not about avoiding conflict, but about growing together through honesty and teamwork. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走向:walk to/head to ②发誓:vow/pledge ③上交:hand in/turn in 情绪类 ①小心翼翼地:with great care/with caution ②坚决的:determined/resolute 【点睛】[高分句型1] Instead, she listened patiently as Leo explained what had really happened.
