Here are some of the top music festivals across America this festival season. Coachella Music Festival | Indio, California As one of the most famous music and arts festivals in the world, Coachella brings together a diverse range of artists and music styles, from rock to hip-hop. It is not only a celebration of music but also a showcase of art, with exhibits and visual experiences. Electric Daisy Carnival | Las Vegas, Nevada This festival is one of the world’s largest electronic dance music (EDM) festivals. They are held in the same state. C. They each have a central theme. D. They perform traditional music. 3. In which section of the newspaper would this text most likely appear? A. Business. B. Health. C. Science. D. Culture. B Before giving my first official lecture at university, I stood helplessly outside the lecture hall, failing to open the classroom door. Just at that time, a cleaner walked by and noticed my awkwardness. She comforted me patiently, telling me that the professor would come soon to get everything ready. I had to explain that I was exactly the professor the students inside were waiting for. Such identity misunderstandings have happened countless times since I started my teaching job. As a young female professor, I look far younger than my real age. Most people hold a fixed stereotype (刻板印象) that professors should be middle-aged and serious-looking. Therefore, I am often wrongly considered to be a college student or a young research assistant both on and off campus. For a long time, these repeated misunderstandings brought me huge self-doubt. I kept questioning whether I was qualified (合格的) for my job and whether I truly belonged to the academic community. Slowly, I was filled with endless anxiety until one day, when a student sent me a heartfelt note, saying my lectures broadened his educational views. This heartfelt message pulled me out and made me see things differently. Since then, I’ve changed my attitude. In the past, I tried dressing formally to look more mature (成熟的), but it never worked. Now I’ve just stopped caring about others’ judgments and put all my energy into teaching and scientific research. I carefully design every lecture and give patient guidance to every student. My professional capability and sincere efforts win wide recognition from my workmates and students. I have fully accepted myself. Appearance can never represent one’s ability or identity. I no longer need others’ positive comments to confirm my value. No matter what I look like, I know clearly that I belong here, and I am proud of being a qualified university professor. 4. Why does the author mention the cleaner? A. To explain her solution to a trouble. B. To share the wisdom of ordinary people. C. To stress the importance of campus staff. D. To show her awkwardness at the first lecture. 5. What inspired the author to change her attitude? A. Her coworker’s praise. B. Her scientific breakthrough. C. Her competitive nature. D. Her student’s appreciation. 6. How does the author manage to change others’ impression of her? A. By getting more qualifications. B. By communicating with others. C. By improving her teaching skills. D. By dressing herself more formally. 7. What message does the text deliver? A. Stereotypes are hard to break down. B. Kind words brighten one’s day easily. C. Ability matters more than appearance. D. Teachers often face misunderstandings. C To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different. Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist. 8. What is the main topic of the article? A. An unusual school. B. Children’s hobbies. C. A school without rules. D. Education in the US. 9. What does the school believe? A. Teachers cannot teach children well. B. Children learn best when they do what they want to do. C. Learning is for adults—children should only play. D. Children should only learn about one thing at a time. 10. What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds? A. They love learning. B. They are very naughty. C. They want to be outside all the time. D. They are too young to learn anything. 11. Who has the most power in the school meetings? A. The older children have more power than the younger children. B. A child has more power than an adult. C. The younger children have more power than the older children. D. Everybody has equal power. D A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering responses when people ask for advice on personal conflicts. This could be harming our ability to handle difficult social situations. Researchers from Stanford University tested 11 different AI models, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini. They asked the AIs for advice on interpersonal problems. They also presented the AIs with thousands of statements describing harmful or dishonest actions. The results showed that the AIs supported the user’s point of view about 49% more often than a human would. For harmful behaviors, the AIs even supported them 47% of the time. In a follow-up experiment, more than 2,400 people talked with both agreeable and non-agreeable AIs. The participants found the agreeable AIs more trustworthy. As a result, they said they would turn to those AIs again for future personal problems. However, the participants could not tell when the AI was giving flattering advice. Notably, the AIs rarely said directly, “You are right.” Instead, they used neutral language to indirectly support the user. For example, when a user asked if they were wrong to lie to their girlfriend about being unemployed for two years, the AI replied, “Your actions, while unusual, seem to come from a real wish to understand your relationship beyond money.” This kind of response avoids any direct judgment. Lead researcher Myra Cheng said she worried that people would lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations. “AI makes it really easy to avoid disagreement with other people,” she explained. But she noted that such disagreement could actually help build healthy relationships. The researchers also warned that if developers only cared about keeping users engaged, they might have no reason to fix AI’s overly agreeable behavior. This could create a loop where AIs become even more flattering over time. 12. What does the follow-up experiment focus on? A. Testing more AI systems. B. Studying users’ responses. C. Comparing different AIs. D. Proving AI’s harmfulness. 13. Which of the following responses is most likely to be given by the AI? A. “You were wrong to lie. You should tell her the truth right now.” B. “I cannot judge whether lying is right or wrong in this situation.” C. “You probably had your reasons, and that shows you value the relationship.” D. “Lying is not a good choice, but I understand you wanted to avoid hurting her.” 14. Which one is the researchers’ worry? A. Loss of interpersonal skills. B. Increased cost of AI services. C. Damage to human judgment. D. Slower development of AI technology. 15. Which would be the best title for this passage? A. The Future of AI Advice B. AI: Always Respect Your View? C. The Danger of AI Misuse D. A 9. B 10. A 11. 通读全文及根据本文第一段“But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.(但是对于马萨诸塞州Sudbury Valley学校的孩子们来说,学校是完全不同的)”及第二段中“Firstly, there are no lessons.(首先,没有课程)”,“There are no teachers —only “staff members”.(没有老师,只有“教职员工”)”以及第三段“At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!(在萨德伯里山谷学校,你将允许孩子们说话、读书、画画、做饭、在电脑上学习、学习法语、弹钢琴、爬树或只是四处跑。两个男孩花了三年时间钓鱼!)”以及第四段“The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules.( 另一方面,Sudbury Valley学校不同的是,孩子们可以决定规则)”可知,本文讲述了Sudbury Valley学校的教育模式,与普通学校有很多不同之处,学生们不用上课,不用做作业,可以随心所欲干自己想干的事,可以参与学校制度的制定。 故选A。 通读全文,根据第二段中“All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want.(所有的孩子,年龄在4岁到19岁之间,想做什么就做什么)”以及第三段中该校创始人之一Daniel Greenberg所说“But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.(但如果你让孩子们整天做你想做的事,他们就会失去学习的兴趣)”可知,学校倡导学生“自主学习”,认为在孩子们做他们想做的事情时,他们学得最好。 根据第二段中“The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway.(这背后的想法是,你不需要迫使孩子学习,因为孩子无论如何都想学习)”可知,学习是每个孩子的天性。故推测Daniel Greenberg 所说的“You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!(你不需要对一个三岁的孩子说,“去探索你的环境。”你无法阻止他们!)”意思是三岁的孩子热爱学习。故选A。 根据第四段“Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-old.They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.(每周都有一次学校会议,孩子和教职工每人都有一票,4岁的孩子也有一票.他们决定学校的规则,如何花费学校的预算,甚至是他们想要和不想要的员工。)”可知,在学校会议上每个人都有平等的权力。故选D项。 D A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering responses when people ask for advice on personal conflicts. AI: Too Agreeable to Be Trusted? B 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第三段中“In a follow‑up experiment, more than 2,400 people talked with both agreeable and non‑agreeable AIs. (在后续实验中,2400多名受试者分别与迎合型AI和非迎合型AI对话。)”可知,后续实验主要研究用户面对不同AI时的反应。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Notably, the AIs rarely said directly, “You are right.” Instead, they used neutral language to indirectly support the user. (值得注意的是,AI很少直接说“你是对的”,而是使用中立的语言间接支持用户。)”可知,AI会委婉间接理解、支持用户的行为。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“Lead researcher Myra Cheng said she worried that people would lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations. (首席研究员迈拉・程表示,她担心人们会失去处理棘手社交状况的能力。)”可知,研究人员担忧人们丧失人际交往能力。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是结合第一段中“A recent study has found that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend to give flattering responses when people ask for advice on personal conflicts. (近期一项研究发现,当人们就人际冲突寻求建议时,人工智能系统往往会给出讨好奉承的回复。)”可知,文章围绕AI总是迎合用户观点这一现象展开探讨。“AI: Too Agreeable to Be Trusted?(人工智能:太过一味迎合,还值得信任吗?)” Studies have shown the strange habit of fleas (跳蚤).
