For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life. Goal setting When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, re-member they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success. Interpersonal skills At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence. Studying With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule. Budgeting Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings…and the fun stuff(movies, dinners out), too. 36. Who is this passage most probably written for? A. College teachers. B. University graduates. C. High school teachers. D. Would-be college students. 37. What is the author’s suggestion for reaching a huge goal? A. Divide it into smaller, more achievable ones. B. Reward oneself for each goal one has set. C. Purchase a clear, updated roadmap. D. Push oneself to an upper level. 38. One of the suggested ways to enhance your interpersonal skills is to ________. A. prepare complicated questions B. try on someone else’s shoes C. listen to others carefully D. take advantage of others 39. What is the key to successful college study according to the author? A. Being well-organized. B. Being well-informed. C. Effective reading skills. D. Reliable research methods. 40. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is________. A. save money for financial investment B. estimate one’s income and expenses C. set aside money for fun activities D. open a personal bank account B A professor I have worked pretty closely with has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. It has been heartbreaking for us. What made him extraordinary was not only that he was a rising star. He had only recently collected the highest honors for young researchers at the White House. We truly admired him- as someone put it, "He always has a smile and a kind word for everyone." It is very hard to find someone who is extremely intelligent should be so nice a human being. I decided that we needed him to know our attitude and also how we are all praying for his recovery. I bought him a simple card which read, "Healing thoughts and wishes coming your way." I met all the students he worked closely with and got them to sign on it. Each student signed and also added a message. "We love you so much," "Please come back," "Thank you for being such an inspiring teacher”...These were some of the messages that were written. Most of the students were really glad we were doing this. He is still undergoing treatments, and trying his best to stay optimistic and hopeful. I didn't see a sign of self-pity or sadness when I met him last week. Instead, he paid attention to every word of my presentation and asked me several questions related to my work. I was amazed at how much he gave his 100% on that day in spite of being in pain because of chemotherapy (化疗). He did not know if he even had another month to live. "I hope to be back this summer," he said, Needless to say, I saw an expression of joy and hope on his face as he opened the card. He said he was truly touched to see the messages from the students he worked with. There is one thing I learned from last week: It is so important to tell people how much they mean to us and what inspiration they are before it becomes too late. My professor, in spite of being too sick to teach classes, has managed to continue being a great teacher, introducing his last valuable message to us. 41. The professor was admired because ________ . A. he was very intelligent B. he had noble personalities C. he had won many honors D. he was very determined 42. The underlined word "attitude" in Paragraph 3 refers to the students’ ________ . A. anxiety to see him B. optimism about his illness C. admiration for him D. regret about being carelessness 43. When the author visited the professor at hospital, what surprised him was that the professor ________ . A. was still very confident B. was suffering from great pain C. still cared for others D. didn't know he would die soon 44. Of the following statements, the author may agree that ________ A. the professor loves his job very much B. the professor often feels sorry for himself C. the professor will go back to teach this summer D. few students supported the author's decision at first 45. What did the author learn from his visit to the professor last week? A. One should remain optimistic all the time. B. It is never too late to make a right decision. C. It is important to let people know about their importance. D. Teachers should have a positive influence on their students. C Getting the “side-eye” look from your dog can make it seem like they are making a judgement about you, and some new studies suggest they really could be. The ability to judge others’ intentions is an indicator of possessing “theory of mind” which was once thought to be unique to humans. However, new studies have shown that dogs can read human behaviour and have a preference to people who are more friendly or generous with food. One such study published in 2023 aimed to see if dogs can tell the difference between humans who are “unwilling” or “unable” to give them a treat. 96 dogs were involved in both “unwilling” and “unable” scenarios (情境) designed for the study. Both scenarios involved a dog being placed on one side of a glass screen with small holes in it at nose-height, and an experimenter standing on the other. In the ‘unwilling’ scenario, the experimenter would hang a piece of sausage in front of the screen in a ‘teasing’ (戏耍的) manner, and approach one of the holes. But instead of passing it through the hole to the dog, they would then pull it out of its reach. For the “unable” scenario, the experimenter would again move the treat towards the hole while the dog watched, but “accidentally” drop it before they could pass it through. The researchers observed that the dogs were much more patient, making more eye contact and staying closer to the screen after the “unable” scenario played out. In the “unwilling” scenario, however, the dogs looked at the experimenter less often, sat, lay down and wandered around more frequently. Another study from 2021 tested for “theory of mind” in dogs in a similar way, but the dogs were able to walk round the screen to obtain the treat after witnessing the experimenter’s “unwilling” or “unable” behaviour. The main finding was that the dogs approached the experimenter significantly sooner in the unable scenario than in the unwilling scenario. However, the researchers of the 2023 study challenged that the food dropped on the floor in the clumsy (笨拙的) manner might have motivated the dogs to approach the experimenter considering that they probably often obtain food dropped on the floor in their daily lives. Now, more evidence has been provided that dogs distinguish between similar actions associated with different intentions. But how exactly they acquire such intention-reading abilities will be an exciting topic for future research. 46. What is one of the new research findings according to Paragraph 2? A. Dogs also have “theory of mind”. B. Dogs prefer food from generous people. C. Human behaviours are mostly intentional. D. Friendly animals can get food more easily. 47. What did the experimenter do in the “unwilling” scenario in the 2023 study? A. They acted awkwardly while feeding the dog. B. They pretended to walk slowly away from the dog. C. They teased the dog by fixing the treat to the screen. D. They pulled the sausage beyond the dog’s reach. 48. How did the dogs of the 2023 study respond to the “unable” behaviour? A. By moving closer to the experimenter. B. By keeping wandering around. C. By ignoring the experimenter. D. By lying still on the floor 49. How does the experiment design of the 2021 study differ from that of 2023? A. The dogs can watch the experimenter. B. The dogs can go to the other side of the screen. C. The dogs’ responses are under close observation. D. The dogs’ habitual behaviours are under analysis. 50. What do the dogs’ different responses in “unwilling” and “unable” scenarios suggest? A. Dogs can tell “being friendly” from “being mean” B. Dogs’ intelligence is gradually evolving. C. Dogs’ intentions can be easily identified. D. Dogs are a lot more emotional than other animals. D My husband went to a friend’s party, leaving me home alone. It was a Friday night, and with nothing planned, I turned to my porcelain (瓷器) collection. It needed rearranging. My goal was to create a display that was not only pleasing to me but also appealing to others. That task consumed a great deal of time. The next morning when my husband arrived home, I hardly noticed. I was fully engaged in selecting pieces that needed to be moved around to show them to the best effect. Time flew by, and I didn’t realize it then, because I was in the “flow”. The concept of flow applies to many activities we enjoy in life, but it’s particularly relevant to collectors who can lose themselves in their collections in various ways. Flow is defined as a mental state in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed (沉浸) in a feeling of energized focus, complete involvement, and enjoyment in the activity process. Art collecting can be deeply engaging and fulfilling, making it an ideal candidate for experiencing flow. This hobby is rich with opportunities for the appreciation of beauty, organization, and intellectual stimulation. The characteristics agree perfectly with the characteristics of flow, which overall enhance our well-being and life satisfaction. When I finally stood that morning, surrounded by my rearranged treasures, I realized something profound. My husband’s laughter at my messy appearance and the unsteady teacups on the bookshelf wasn’t just amusement — it was a witness to transformation. “You look like a time traveler,” he said. Indeed, I had journeyed through centuries of craftsmanship (工艺), across cultures, into that rare space where time disappears into pure presence. In our age of digital distraction, where tasks multiply but satisfaction decreases, my night with the porcelain reminded me of a simple truth: real satisfaction comes from being fully present in what we love. Those quiet hours of rearranging the porcelain were more than just organizing objects — they were an invitation to slow down, to connect with beauty and history, and to rediscover the joy of complete focus. 51. What happened to the author while rearranging the porcelain collection? A. She kept checking the clock to ensure progress. B. She experienced conflicts with her husband. C. She was too absorbed to notice anything else. D. She worked out a way to promote her efficiency. 52. Which of the following are the characteristics of “flow”? ①Complete involvement in an activity. ②Being in a focused and energetic state. ③Feeling pressured to finish tasks quickly. ④Finding enjoyment in the process. ⑤Being aware of changes in the surroundings. A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ①④⑤ D. ②③⑤ 53. The author’s husband said the author looked like “a time traveler” because ________. A. she was dressed in old-fashioned clothes B. she was mentally connected with historical objects C. she accidentally mixed pieces from different eras D. she worked continuously through the night 54. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph? A. We should pursue more productive tasks. B. Art collecting helps us solve modern anxieties. C. Traditional hobbies are losing their value. D. We should fully engage in what we love. 55. What might be the best title for the text? A. Finding Joy in Focus: My “Flow” Experience B. My Time Travel with Porcelain One Day C. My Reflection on Art Collections D. Enjoying the Art of Porcelain: A Personal Story 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Six days a week, up and down the red hills of northeast Georgia, my grandfather brought the mail to the folks there. At age 68, he retired from the post office, but he never stopped serving the community. On his 80th birthday, I sent him a letter, noting the things we all should be thankful for — good health, good friends and good outcomes. By most measurements he was a happy man. Then I suggested it was time for him to slow down. At long last, in a comfortable home, with a generous pension, he should learn to take things easy. “Thank you for your nice words,” he wrote in his letter back, “and I know what you meant, but slowing down scares me. Life isn’t having it made; it’s getting it made.” “The finest and happiest years of our lives were not when all the debts were paid, and all difficult experiences had passed, and we had settled into a comfortable home. No. I go back years ago, when we lived in a three-room house, when we got up before daylight and worked till after dark to make ends meet. I rarely had more than four hours of sleep. But what I still can’t figure out is why I never got tired, never felt better in my life. I guess the answer is, we were fighting for survival, protecting and providing for those we loved. What matters are not the great moments, but the partial victories, the waiting, and even the defeats. It’s the journey, not the arrival, that counts.” The letter ended with a personal request: “Boy, on my next birthday, just tell me to wake up and get going, because I will have one less year to do things — and there are ten million things waiting to be done.” Christina Rossetti, an English poet, once said: “Does the road wind uphill all the way? Yes, to the very end.” Today, at 96, my grandfather is still on that long road, climbing. 56. What was the author’s grandfather before he retired? (no more than 5 words) 57. Members of the club actively participated in the event. The contest required participants to retell a famous Chinese story in English. The event was an excellent opportunity for students to promote Chinese traditional culture and improve their English writing skills. During the contest, participants used different techniques to make their stories more accessible to foreigners, including explaining Chinese expressions, describing cultural backgrounds, and using visual aids. In conclusion, the essay contest organized by our English club was a massive success. It provided a platform for students to showcase their English proficiency and cultural knowledge.
