The guzheng is one of the oldest Chinese stringed instruments with a history of over 2,500 years. It is also called the Chinese zither. It has a long wooden body and many silk strings, usually 21 strings in modern designs.
At first, the guzheng was only popular in northern China. As time went by, it spread to the whole country. Different areas created different playing styles. Northern guzheng music is loud and powerful, while southern pieces are soft and gentle.
Today, many schools have guzheng clubs. Teachers believe learning the guzheng helps teenagers understand traditional culture better. Unlike pop music, guzheng pieces mostly tell old folk stories or describe beautiful natural views. Many young players write new works by mixing guzheng sounds with modern pop music.
Li Mei, a 15-year-old guzheng learner, says she spends one hour practising every day. “Playing the guzheng makes me calm when I feel stressed. I hope more young people will fall in love with this beautiful instrument,” she said.
