A better self
Hello, everyone!
Today, I am honored to share my experience with you.
Once, I was terrified of speaking English in public. My voice would shake and I’d forget words even if I practiced well. I almost gave up, but my teacher encouraged me to try step by step.
I started with reading English aloud every morning and joining the English corner. When I felt nervous, I took deep breaths and told myself “I can do it”. Slowly, I became more confident.
This experience taught me that facing fears bravely is the first step to growth. No matter how hard it is, never give up. We all can become a better self with effort.
Thank you for your listening!

Mr Smith was a businessman. But he always forgot his things. Sometimes he even forgot what he was talking about. So his wife had to remember things for him and remind him.
One summer, Mr Smith decided to spend his holiday with his two young children on the beach. In order to make the trip more interesting for his children, he kept the name of the beach a secret. As his wife had to work that summer, he had to take the children alone. But unluckily, he forgot the name of the beach when they got to the railway station. So he left his children to a friend who he met at the station. And he himself hurried back to ask his wife.
His wife was surprised to see him back alone. When she heard the reason, she wrote down the name of the beach on a piece of paper and told him, “Take the paper with you and take care not to lose it!” Then, Mr Smith went away.
But ten minutes later, Mr Smith came back again.
“What’s the matter with you this time? Did you lose the paper?” his wife asked.
“No. I’ve forgotten where I left our children.”

Jake Pinnick, the 36-year-old from the United States, has an unusual story of “Becoming Chinese”. Now he is known as a foreign coach at Wudang Mountain in Hubei province, teaching martial arts (武术) to students from around the world.
As a fan of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Pinnick always wanted to learn “real kung fu from its roots (根源)”. Attracted by a video of Wudang martial arts online, he finally made up his mind to come to China in 2010.
Life in China was not easy at the beginning. The training was hard, but he never gave up. By repeating every move countless times each day, he gradually realized that martial arts are never supposed to compete against or win over others. Instead, they help achieve balance between inner spirit and outer strength, just as his master once told him, “Develop virtue before practising martial arts.”
After finishing his five-year training at Wudang Mountain, Pinnick returned to the US with his Chinese wife and their daughter. However, he found himself “stuck between Chinese and American culture”. So in 2018, he decided to return to Wudang Mountain to teach and spread Wudang culture.
Over the past years in China, Pinnick has become completely used to the local life. He now enjoys drinking hot tea instead of coffee. He is also proud of his Chinese name, Li Zigen, given by his master.
Pinnick hopes to deepen understanding between different cultures through his efforts. With encouragement from his wife, he started posting videos online about martial arts in 2020. Recently, some local people expressed doubts about the “dim and dark” environment at Shenzhen Bay Park at night. The government explained that dimming or turning off the lights was meant to protect migratory birds.
Shenzhen Bay Park lies on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. It is one of the world’s nine main migratory bird flyways. Every winter, tens of thousands of birds stop here during their long journeys. Too much artificial light (人造光) can influence the birds’ resting and change their migratory rhythms. To help, the leaders of the park decided to dim the lights and reduce nighttime lighting.
However, this doesn’t mean all lights are turned off. The main entrances and main walkways of the park still have some lighting for safety, so people can use the park at night. At the same time, the areas that are important to migratory birds are kept dark and softly lighted.
Many people supported the decision after learning the reason. Some even said, “It is a warm action. We should leave living spaces for wildlife.”
Dimming lights for nature brings several advantages. It helps wildlife, including millions of birds, by reducing the harm to their natural cycles. It also lets people rediscover the beauty of stars and get real rest at night.
In fact, Shenzhen is not alone. Lanshan, Hunan Province also lies on the same migratory flyway. It has become a habit to turn off the lights in public places at a fixed time in the evenings from September to November every year. Even the local people who dance in the square are moved by the project. They offer to dim the lights to help the migratory birds find their way.
As cities grow and develop, Shenzhen’s example shows that progress doesn’t always mean bright city lights. An ideal city knows when to step forward with warmth and when to step back, making space for nature’s needs.
( )43.What does Shenzhen Bay Park do to protect migratory birds?
A. Dim or turn off the lights when necessary.
B. Turn off all the lights everywhere in the park.
C. Turn on more lights to help birds find their way.
D. Move the migratory birds to another safe park.
( )44.How does dimming lights for nature help migratory birds?
A. By changing their flying ways.
B. By making their living spaces smaller.
C. By reducing the harm to their natural cycles.
D. By helping them find food more easily at night.
( )45.Why is Lanshan, Hunan Province mentioned in Paragraph 6?
A. To show more cities are doing the same as Shenzhen.
B. To explain why the local people agree to dim the lights.
C. To introduce the relationship between Shenzhen and Lanshan.
D. To tell readers that Lanshan is a better place for birds.
( )46.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call on people to get close to nature.
B. To discuss what an ideal city should be like.
C. To ask the government to turn off all city lights at night.
D. To encourage people to make space for wildlife.

Life was very different at Scott’s home. Scott lived with his father, a judge (法官), his mother, and his sister. There were other animals as well, such as cats and chickens. White Fang had to learn that the other people in the house were friends and that he must not attack (攻击) the chickens or cats.
One day, he killed fifty of the birds. Scott was angry with White Fang. He did not beat him badly, but he pushed his head at the dead birds and hit White Fang at the same time. This way, White Fang knew he had done wrong.
“The animal is a wolf,” Scott’s father said. “You’ll never teach him not to kill chickens.”
“He won’t attack another chicken,” Scott said. “Will you make a bet with me?”
The judge agreed, and the two men had a bet.
“I’ll lock White Fang in the chicken house,” Scott said. “He can stay there all night. In the morning, not one chicken will be dead”.
And this was what happened. White Fang behaved as if there were no chickens in the chicken house. He had learned his lesson.
By this time, everyone in Scott’s family liked White Fang. They felt safe with him because he knew them, even though he was not a “house dog.”
After Scott came back home from the Yukon, a dangerous man appeared. His name was Jim Hall, and he had killed many men. He wanted to kill the judge who had sent him to prison (监狱). This was Scott’s father.
One night, Jim Hall got into the house and planned to shoot (射击) the judge while he slept. However, White Fang saw the strange man. He knew that this man was not a friend and leapt at him. A fight went on for a long time. Jim Hall shot White Fang several times, but White Fang would not let him go.
The noise woke everyone up. The police came and took Jim Hall back to prison. White Fang’s wounds were very bad, and he was dying. Scott sent for a doctor who looked at White Fang and said, “He has only one chance in a thousand of living.”
The doctor did everything he could for White Fang, but he lost a lot of blood. He had a broken leg, and there were bullet holes in his chest. But as the days passed, White Fang slowly got better. He lived, but he could not fight again. He lived the rest of his life quietly with Scott and his family, a much gentler and much loved wolf-dog.

Straight or arched, thick or thin — eyebrows (眉毛) come in many shapes and sizes. But what are eyebrows even for? They don’t keep us warm like our hair, or help us breathe like our noses. So why do we have them? 56
Early humans had large brow ridges (眉骨). 57 Later, as the human face became smaller and flatter, our eyebrows helped us to express different feelings, as well as better understand others’ feelings. For example, a quick flash of the eyebrows. This is a sign that someone is willing to communicate with others, while pulling our eyebrows up in the middle is an expression of sympathy (同情). 58 just draw a simple face on a piece of paper and draw a line above the eyes. You can draw lines in different shapes and directions. You will find that it is very easy to show anger, fear or surprise on a face.
But this is not the only purpose of our eyebrows. 59 Their arched shape can help to move rain or sweat around to the sides of our faces, keeping our eyes dry. Together with our eyelashes (眼睫毛), eyebrows can also help to keep dust and other things out of our eyes.
60 In that case, some scientists believe that we would have developed some other facial feature to perform the same role. That could make us look quite different.
A. They can also protect our eyes.
B. What if we didn’t have eyebrows?
C. This helped them show their power.
D. If you still find this hard to understand,
E. Let’s take rolling one’s eyes as an example.
F. Scientists believe eyebrows helped us communicate better when we were still developing.

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk?
First, you had to learn how to balance yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power-you’d stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time-you did it!
Now, the next step-walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t look that hard-just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong-more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people around you found you walking, they cheered, “Oh, look at what the kid is doing.” This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child-how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering? You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

My wife c 79 checked it and then said, “Let me take it home and repair it.” Three days went past, and I was s 80 to see it again: all the openings were sewed up by thin and white thread and they looked like the ice crystal (晶体) on winter’s branches (树枝) in the north. She even made a snowman and a house on the blouse. I said with p 81 , “It’s just as beautiful as a piece of art.” “I learnt from the master. Patches (补丁) can be d 82 to look perfect,” replied my wife.
Her words taught me even more: perfection is impossible to a 83 in everything; patches are unavoidable, so is humans’ life, which will appear in the form of wounds, disabilities or diseases. S 84 you can’t change that, all you can do and have to do is to cover the wound with patches and try your best to make a most beautiful flower on the wound, and that is w 85 life teaches us. Once you understand it, you can enjoy your life better.
