When Russell Lyons volunteered for the first time, he read “Goodnight Moon” to a class of San Diego preschoolers. And it wasn't reading — he'd memorized the book and was reciting it out loud. He was 4. Still, he said it felt good there, in front of the other kids, lending a hand. He wanted more of that feeling.
Thirteen years later, he's getting a lot of it. He's on a five-month road trip across America — not sightseeing, but volunteering.
The University City resident has spent time at an animal reserve in Utah, a women's shelter in St. Louis, a soup kitchen in New York, a retirement home in Tucson. This week he's in Los Angeles, at a program that supports disabled youth.
“I just like helping people and feeling that something I do is making a difference,” he said. He resists the idea that his “Do Good Adventure” is all that unusual. It bothers him that the media often describe young people as lazy, self-centered. So he sees his trip as a chance to make a statement, too. “About 55 percent of teens do volunteer work, higher than the rate for adults,” he said, according to a 2002 study. “Not everybody knows that.”
Of course, some teens do volunteer work because it looks impressive on their college applications. Lyons said he mentioned his trip on his applications. But charity work is a habit with him. Even before the cross-country trip, he was volunteering about 200 hours a year at various places. He's made sandwiches for homeless families in Washington D.C. He's taught math to fifth-graders in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
He gets some of that drive from his mother, Lesley Lyons, who has been involved in nonprofits for much of her life. She was there when her son “read” to the preschoolers — a memory of hers “that will never go away.”
24.What did Russell Lyons think of his first volunteering?
A.Creative.
B.Impressive.
C.Persuasive.
D.Imaginative.
25.According to Paragraph 4, Russell Lyons is against the idea that ______.
A.what he has done is common
B.most teens do volunteer work
C.young people don't work hard
D.adults prefer to be volunteers
26.Russell Lyons has been doing volunteer work because ______.
A.it is necessary for college applications
B.he ought to keep his promise to Mom
C.he likes the feeling of being praised
D.it has become a natural part of his life
27.What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.Lesley Lyons is too busy to look after her son.
B.Russell Lyons is greatly influenced by his mother.
C.Lesley Lyons almost earns no money all her life.
D.Children are always important to their parents.

Online clothes shoppers will be told exactly what size is best for them using new software which combines with their webcam (网络摄像头) or smart phone to form a 3D tape measure.
Scientists from Surrey University and design experts from the London College of Fashion are developing a program which can take precise waist, hip, chest and other measurements from camera images.
Using the person's height as a starting point, the software will be able to build up a 3D image and estimate their size at various different points on the body, based on their overall proportions. The result will be a more accurate sizing guide than previous systems based on waist size or a “small/medium/large” scale, which rely on limited measurements and the buyer's perception of their own body size.
Shoppers and retailers (零售商) who choose to sign up for the project could save millions of pounds a year in postage costs by removing the need to order multiple sizes of the same garment and send back ill-fitting clothes, researchers claimed. The project, sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), is expected to be brought to market within two years.
After choosing an item, the shopper will activate the software, enter their height, stand in front of their webcam or smart phone in their underwear and take a photograph.
The software will not store or transmit the image to the Internet, but will use it to judge the person's dimensions at various points on their body.
Philip Delamore of the London College of Fashion said, “The potential benefits for the fashion industry and for shoppers are huge. Currently, it's common for online shoppers to order two or three different sizes of the same item of clothing at the same time, as they're unsure which one will fit best.”
28.What is the essential part of a 3D tape measure?
A.A webcam.
B.A software.
C.A microphone.
D.A smart phone.
29.What can we learn about the 3D tape measure?
A.It will store or transmit the image to the Internet.
B.It is based on the buyer's perception of their size.
C.It will be a co-working production.
D.It uses a person's weight as a starting point.
30.How can the 3D tape measure benefit online shoppers?
A.Online shoppers will get their ordered garment in time.
B.Online shoppers will get their ordered garment more quickly.
C.Online shoppers will get an ordered garment of high quality.
D.Online shoppers will get an ordered garment to their measure.
31.What is the right order for a shopper to form a 3D tape measure?
① take a photo with a webcam
② activate the software
③ enter his/her height
④ judge his/her size by analysing his/her image
A.②③①④
B.②①③④
C.①②③④
D.②③④①

AlphaGo is a computer program that plays the board game Go.
In March, 2016, the pride of humankind was crushed (粉碎) by a computer. Google's AlphaGo defeated the South Korean Go grandmaster (围棋大师) Lee Sedol four games to one, as the world looked on with shock and awe (敬畏). Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) had suddenly reached a new and unexpected height.
But as smart as AlphaGo is, it's no longer the best Go “player” in the world. Google's artificial intelligence group, DeepMind, has created the next generation of its Go-playing program, called AlphaGo Zero. The new AI program is unique in the way it learned to play Go. Instead of learning from thousands of human matches, as its predecessor (前任) did, AlphaGo Zero mastered Go in just two days without any human knowledge of the game and defeated AlphaGo by day three, reported The Guardian. It then went on to defeat AlphaGo 100 games to zero.
To learn how to play Go, AlphaGo Zero played millions of matches against itself using only the basic rules of the game to rapidly create its own knowledge of it. Like the previous version, it used “reinforcement (增强) learning to become its own teacher,” according to DeepMind's website.
“It's more powerful than previous approaches,” David Silver, AlphaGo's lead researcher, told The Guardian, “because by not using human data, or human expertise in any fashion, we've removed the constraints (约束) of human knowledge and it is able to create knowledge itself.”
AlphaGo Zero's approach to self-learning is a significant advancement in AI that could be applied to help solve some of the world's biggest problems, according to a recent research report published in the journal Nature. For example, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis argues that AlphaGo Zero could probably find cures for a number of serious diseases within weeks, according to The Telegraph. Indeed, the AI is now being used to study protein folding, which is connected to diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
So now that AI has exceeded (超过) the bounds of human knowledge, perhaps the question is not about what AI can learn from humans, but what humans can learn from AI. We can only wait and see.
32.What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?
A.AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol five games to zero.
B.AlphaGo Zero defeated AlphaGo within one day.
C.AlphaGo Zero is the first program to defeat a human at Go.
D.AlphaGo Zero has become the new best Go player.
33.How is AlphaGo Zero different from previous Go-playing programs?
A.It can collect human knowledge automatically.
B.It can create knowledge without human limits.
C.It can become its own teacher in learning Go skills.
D.It can play many matches without a break.
34.What's the possible application of AI in the future according to the article?
A.Treating diseases.
B.Making new Go rules.
C.Solving math problems.
D.Creating new proteins.
35.What is the author's attitude towards AI?
A.Mixed.
B.Hopeful.
C.Doubtful.
D.Worried.
If you've got a lot of information coming at you, or you need to pick up a new skill in a short time, no worries. 36 To help you do it, we've put together a list of things you can do to improve your ability to learn quickly and effectively.
37
The right mindset can help you learn more effectively. Try to remind yourself that you're learning something to improve your knowledge and skills. Think about all of the benefits that come with it. Avoid worst-case thinking and focus on the possible positive outcomes (结果). It can make a huge difference.
Test yourself as often as you can.
It's a great way to figure out what you need to learn. Go through the information you're trying to learn and ask yourself questions about the material. Changing the way you practice can help you improve. If you're trying to learn a task or skill, practice is super important and one of the most effective ways to get better. 39 Instead, try mixing it up and practicing a different way each time, which can help your mind strengthen your memories, making you learn more quickly.
Exercise regularly.

“An everyday miracle,” the radio commentator began, “is a wonderful or amazing event that occurs.” That attracted my attention. Although I was anxious to hear more, I had to turn off the car radio as I was next in line to pick up fast food.
Because I stopped at the drive-through (免下车餐馆) every morning on my way to work, I knew the elderly clerk, Mary. So it wasn't a surprise when she stuck her head out of the window while handing me my Diet Coke and began talking. “The traditional holiday is coming. But my family won't have the traditional holiday dinner this year,” she said sadly. “We canceled it this year. I can't afford it anymore.”
I tried to say something comforting, but my mind was blank. Embarrassed, I said goodbye and began my forty-five-minute drive to work. On the way, I couldn't get Mary's depressed expression out of my mind. Then I thought about the local annual auction that I took part in every year. The activity was yearly held to raise money for the local food bank, a place where poor people could go to get free food.
I hoped the food bank could help Mary. But because of the COVID-19, the food bank was struggling this year. I hoped the upcoming auction would raise much money for the food bank. When the day of the auction came, the organizers sent an e-mail to its usual participants, “Guys, take your second-hand things to be auctioned off and come!”
Two days later, I arrived at the auction site, the local park, with my “treasures”. Just seeing each other was exciting. The sun came out. Everyone was laughing and talking. But when I looked around, there were only 22 people. “We won't make any money today,” I whispered to my longtime friend Sandy. Always optimistic, she quickly reminded me, “Every little bit will help this year.”
Paragraph 1:
After we took out the second-hand objects, the auction began.

【答案】B
A.Creative.
B.Impressive.
C.Persuasive.
D.Imaginative.
由第一段 “Still, he said it felt good there, in front of the other kids, lending a hand. He wanted more of that feeling.” Creative(有创造性的)、Persuasive(有说服力的)、Imaginative(有想象力的)均与语境不符。
25.According to Paragraph 4, Russell Lyons is against the idea that ______.
【答案】C
A.what he has done is common
B.most teens do volunteer work
C.young people don't work hard
D.adults prefer to be volunteers
由第四段 “It bothers him that the media often describe young people as lazy, self-centered.”
26.Russell Lyons has been doing volunteer work because ______.
【答案】D
A.it is necessary for college applications
B.he ought to keep his promise to Mom
C.he likes the feeling of being praised
D.it has become a natural part of his life
由第五段 “But charity work is a habit with him. Even before the cross-country trip, he was volunteering about 200 hours a year at various places.”
27.What does the last paragraph suggest?
【答案】B
A.Lesley Lyons is too busy to look after her son.
B.Russell Lyons is greatly influenced by his mother.
C.Lesley Lyons almost earns no money all her life.
D.Children are always important to their parents.
由末段 “He gets some of that drive from his mother, Lesley Lyons, who has been involved in nonprofits for much of her life.”
C
【答案】B
A.A webcam.
B.A software.
C.A microphone.
D.A smart phone.
由第一段 “...using new software which combines with their webcam or smart phone to form a 3D tape measure” 可知,网络摄像头或智能手机只是与软件配合的硬件,最重要的是这个新软件,故选B。
29.What can we learn about the 3D tape measure?
【答案】C
A.It will store or transmit the image to the Internet.
B.It is based on the buyer's perception of their size.
C.It will be a co-working production.
D.It uses a person's weight as a starting point.
A项与第六段 “will not store or transmit the image to the Internet” 相反;B项是旧系统的依据;D项应为 height 而非 weight。
30.How can the 3D tape measure benefit online shoppers?
【答案】D
A.Online shoppers will get their ordered garment in time.
B.Online shoppers will get their ordered garment more quickly.
C.Online shoppers will get an ordered garment of high quality.
D.Online shoppers will get an ordered garment to their measure.
由第三段 “The result will be a more accurate sizing guide than previous systems...”
31.What is the right order for a shopper to form a 3D tape measure?
① take a photo with a webcam
② activate the software
③ enter his/her height
④ judge his/her size by analysing his/her image
【答案】A
A.②③①④
B.②①③④
C.①②③④
D.②③④①
由倒数第三段 “the shopper will activate the software, enter their height... and take a photograph” 及倒数第二段 “will use it to judge the person's dimensions” 可知正确顺序为:激活软件②→输入身高③→拍照①→分析图像判定尺寸④,故选A。
D
【答案】D
A.AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol five games to zero.
B.AlphaGo Zero defeated AlphaGo within one day.
C.AlphaGo Zero is the first program to defeat a human at Go.
D.AlphaGo Zero has become the new best Go player.
由第三段 “it's no longer the best Go ‘player’ in the world... AlphaGo Zero mastered Go in just two days... and defeated AlphaGo by day three. It then went on to defeat AlphaGo 100 games to zero.”
33.How is AlphaGo Zero different from previous Go-playing programs?
【答案】B
A.It can collect human knowledge automatically.
B.It can create knowledge without human limits.
C.It can become its own teacher in learning Go skills.
D.It can play many matches without a break.
由第五段 David Silver 的话 “by not using human data, or human expertise in any fashion, we've removed the constraints of human knowledge and it is able to create knowledge itself.”
34.What's the possible application of AI in the future according to the article?
【答案】A
A.Treating diseases.
B.Making new Go rules.
C.Solving math problems.
D.Creating new proteins.
由倒数第二段 “AlphaGo Zero could probably find cures for a number of serious diseases within weeks... the AI is now being used to study protein folding, which is connected to diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.”
35.What is the author's attitude towards AI?
【答案】B
A.Mixed.
B.Hopeful.
C.Doubtful.
D.Worried.
作者客观介绍AlphaGo Zero的突破,并引用研究称其“could be applied to help solve some of the world's biggest problems”,结尾更以 “perhaps the question is... what humans can learn from AI. We can only wait and see.”

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a 41 which said: “I am blind, please help.”
There were only a few 42 in the hat. A man was walking by. He took some change from his pocket and dropped it into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some 43 . He put it back so that everyone who passed by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to 44 . There were a lot more people 45 money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had 46 the sign came to see how things were. The boy sensed his footsteps and asked, “Are you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I just wrote the 47 . I said what you said but in a different way.”
What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day but I 48 see it.”
Do you think the previous sign and the new one were 49 the same thing? Of course both signs told people that the boy was blind. 50 , the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat because of his blindness. The second sign told people that they were 51 enough and able to enjoy the 52 of the day, which the boy couldn't.
There are at least two 53 we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Be 54 for what you have. Someone else has less. Help where you can. The second is: Be creative. Think 55 . There is always a better way.

由下文“wrote some words”“He put it back”及“The man... took the sign”可知,男孩举着的是一块写着字的牌子(sign),故选C。
由上句男子“took some change from his pocket”可知,帽子里只有几枚硬币(coins),change 与 coins 呼应,故选D。checks(支票)、bills(钞票)、banknotes(纸币)与零钱语境不符。
男子把牌子翻过来重新“写”了一些“话”(words),与下文“What did you write?”
由下文“a lot more people... money”可知帽子开始“装满”(fill up),故选B。blow up 爆炸;pump up 充气;fold up 折叠,均不符合语境。
给盲男孩“捐”钱用 donate;lending(借出)、collecting(收集)、offering(主动给予)均不能与“to the blind boy”构成捐款语境,故选D。
由男孩的问话“Are you the one who changed my sign this morning?”
男子说“我只是写出了事实(truth)”,下文“Today is a beautiful day but I can't see it”正是事实陈述,故选A。
下文“both signs told people that the boy was blind”给出回答,故选B。
能“欣赏这一天的美好”(the beauty of the day),与上句“Today is a beautiful day”呼应,故选A。
由下文“The first is...”“The second is...”
由“for what you have”“Someone else has less”可知,第一条教训是对你所拥有的心怀“感恩”(grateful),故选C。
A group of panda fans 56 (select) from European countries are joining a two-month self-drive tour from Europe to Sichuan Province.
The self-drive team, 57 consists of 40 members, 58 (cover) about 20,000 km across 14 countries along the Southern Silk Road before arriving in Chengdu. 59 total of ten sports vehicles made in Chengdu were sent to Europe via the Chengdu-Europe Express Rail 60 (aid) the whole trip last month. On their way to Sichuan, a full range of activities will 61 (hold), 14 tourism promotion activities and six panda-themed cultural exchange activities 62 (include). The activity is the first large-scale transnational tourism campaign which connects pandas with the Southern Silk Road.
Sichuan is home 63 pandas, and also the starting point of the Southern Silk Road. The Southern Silk Road is one of the ancient international trade 64 (channel), starting from Chengdu in Sichuan. Sichuan, known as the panda home in the world, is the obvious destination for panda 65 (love).
a total of...
be home to... “……

亮点词汇与句型:invite sb. to do sth. 邀请某人做某事;As scheduled 按预定安排;followed by... 过去分词作状语;during which 引导非限制性定语从句;Believe it or not 信不信由你;never fail to do 必定会……。
Paragraph 2:
Upon seeing me, Mary nearly jumped out of the window, saying excitedly, “You won't believe it!”
Paragraph 1:
After we took out the second-hand objects, the auction began. Though there were much less people attending it than usual, everyone was active and dedicated to raising more money. One by one, the items were sold at good prices. When it came to my “treasure” — a used camera, the final auction price of $100 shocked me. Before the auction ended, Sandy and I counted the money again and again, our faces glowing with excitement. At last, the auction collected over $2,000, which meant about 200 families could get help from the food bank during the traditional holiday.
Paragraph 2:
Upon seeing me, Mary nearly jumped out of the window, saying excitedly, “You won't believe it!” Before I could respond, she eagerly continued to say that she had got enough food from the food bank, including a big turkey and fresh vegetables for the holiday dinner. “It's like an everyday miracle!” she said with tears of joy in her eyes. Hearing her words, I smiled happily, feeling proud that my small effort had turned into a real “everyday miracle” for someone else.
