At age 90, I finally realized that I qualify as “elderly”. However, I don’t ever want that label of “senior citizen”. How I look and feel is only part of facing reality. The big factor is how other people treat me. This hit me rather dramatically as I was exiting a building the other day. As I started for the door, a young woman stepped ahead of me. Then she opened and held the door for me.
I expected an active retirement, but my body had other plans. I’m learning to embrace it. This kind of thing is beginning to happen all the time. At the hardware store, I bought a few minor items—light bulbs and birdseed weighing perhaps a total of 10 pounds. As I started to pick up the bag, the cashier said, “Sir, let me get someone to help you with that.”
For a few weeks, all of these made me sad. I am a man of a certain generation after all: former Air Force officer and jet fighter pilot, former corporate executive, author, former speaker and consultant, and so on. But I’m too old for anyone to hire me even if I wanted them to. It can be depressing. It didn’t help a lot to realize that I’ve had a great life. But as I thought about that, trying my best to count my blessings, it began to sound like an obituary (补告).
It has taken several weeks to realize that respect and learn from the past, but don’t let yourself be held prisoner by your memories; and always look to the future with optimism but live in the present, treasuring every single minute of every single day, even the ones that your younger self would have complained about.
Finally, when all those younger folks offer to help, let go of the chagrin, realize that it makes other people feel good to help and just say, “Thank you.” I think they, whoever they are, refer to that as aging gracefully.
4. What made the author realize he was elderly?
A. The memories of his successful past. B. The help offered by a young woman.
C. His label “senior citizen” given by society. D. His physical appearance and health condition.
5. How did the author firstly react to being treated like an old person?
A. He felt spiritless. B. He was indifferent.
C. He was bored with it. D. He accepted it agreeably.
6. What do we know about the author from the text?
A. He is lost in his past success. B. He has an idea for his obituary.
C. He has a positive outlook on life. D. He is suffering memory loss.
7. What does the underlined word “chagrin” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Past. B. Fear. C. Confidence. D. Annoyance.
C
Have you ever been on an airplane, minding your own business, and found your eyes filled with tears for no reason? Or perhaps you sat near someone who burst into tears. Is there something happening to your body that triggers(引发) the tears?
There sure is! When you’re inside a flying airplane, you’re miles off the ground. Not exactly a place where humans usually find themselves. The airplane is pressurized(加压) to keep passengers comfortable. But it’s still not the pressure levels that you’ll experience at ground level. It’s a bit like having climbed a pretty high mountain.
The primary tear-trigger is the lower amount of oxygen in your blood. The oxygen levels in the plane are lower than you’ll find on the ground. And it can bring you bad feelings.
Another cause is dehydration. Because the air in the plane is very dry, we may get dehydrated. And being dehydrated can have all kinds of harmful effects on your 30,000-foot-high body, which is making you have bad feelings like sadness and worry.
In fact, there is a spiritual reason, too! Even if you’re not afraid of planes, it’s a high-stress situation. Taking a flight often involves saying goodbye to someone in the place you’re leaving. You can also be worried about plane crash or losing your baggage.
You can drink plenty of water before your flight to fight back your tears. You can also keep your mind busy with a puzzle or brain game. And if you’re going to watch a movie, maybe choose one that’s a bit more relaxing. In short, make flying a more pleasant and less stressful experience.
8. In Paragraph 1 the author started with questions in order to .
A. lead to the topic of the text
B. give background information
C. ask why some people feel bad on the plane
D. show the do’s and don’ts on the plane
9. What triggers tears when you’re on an airplane?
A. The weather. B. Your health.
C. The altitude. D. The temperature.
10. What does the underlined word “dehydration” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Catching a disease.
B. Drinking too much water.
C. Sleeping too much in the daytime.
D. Losing too much water from one’s body.
11. In the last paragraph, the author mainly tells us .
A. suggestions on how to take a safe flight
B. tips on how to hold back tears while flying
C. advice on how to get over fears when flying
D. ways of making yourself comfortable while flying
D
Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal!
So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus veggies and protein, they become a decent occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think — just upgrade your cooking method!
12. What determines if instant noodles are unhealthy?
A. Their quick cooking time. B. The time of eating.
C. The preparation method. D. The junk food label.
13. What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles?
A. The dried noodles. B. The flavor packets.
C. Using boiling water. D. People avoiding cooking.
14. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A. Warn about health dangers. B. Give cooking instructions.
C. Argue noodles are harmless. D. List harmful additives.
15. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Instant Noodles: Not All Waste. B. Instant Noodles: How to Cook?
C. Instant Noodles: Eat Sometimes. D. Instant Noodles: What we know?

A. Past. B. Fear. C. Confidence. D. Annoyance.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D
由文章第一段“The big factor is how other people treat me. This hit me rather dramatically as I was exiting a building the other day. As I started for the door, a young woman stepped ahead of me. Then she opened and held the door for me.(最重要的因素是别人如何对待我。前几天我走出一栋楼时,这对我产生了相当大的打击。当我朝门口走去时,一位年轻女子走在我前面。然后她打开门,为我扶住了门。)”可知,一位年轻女子的帮助让作者意识到自己已经老了。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第三段 “For a few weeks, all of these made me sad. I am a man of a certain generation after all: former Air Force officer and jet fighter pilot, former corporate executive, author, former speaker and consultant, and so on. But I’m too old for anyone to hire me even if I wanted them to. It can be depressing. (几周来,所有这些都让我很难过。毕竟,我属于某一代人:前空军军官和喷气式战斗机飞行员、前公司高管、作家、前演讲者和顾问等等。但我太老了,即使我想让他们雇佣我,也没有人会雇佣我。这可能会让人沮丧。)” 可知,一开始当被当作老人对待时,作者是感到悲伤、沮丧的,也就是没什么精神的。故选A项。
文章倒数第二段提到“It has taken several weeks to realize that respect and learn from the past, but don’t let yourself be held prisoner by your memories; and always look to the future with optimism but live in the present, treasuring every single minute of every single day, even the ones that your younger self would have complained about.(花了几个星期才意识到尊重和从过去中吸取教训,但不要让自己被记忆所束缚;始终乐观地展望未来,但要活在当下,珍惜每一天的每一分钟,即使是年轻的自己会抱怨的那一分钟。)”
由最后一段“Finally, when all those younger folks offer to help, let go of the chagrin, realize that it makes other people feel good to help and just say, ‘Thank you.’ I think they, whoever they are, refer to that as aging gracefully.(最后,当所有这些年轻人都主动提供帮助时,放下 ,意识到帮助别人会让人感觉很好,然后说‘谢谢’。我认为他们,不管他们是谁,都把这称为优雅的衰老。)”可知,这里指当年轻人帮忙时,要放下那种不好的情绪,意识到别人帮忙会感觉良好然后说声谢谢,所以这里的“chagrin”是一种负面的情绪,应是“恼怒”的意思。故选D项。
A 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据文章第一段“Is there something happening to your body that triggers the tears?(是你的身体发生了什么事触发了眼泪吗?)” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段“The primary tear-trigger is the lower amount of oxygen in your blood. The oxygen levels in the plane are lower than you’ll find on the ground.(触发眼泪的主要原因是血液中的氧气含量降低。飞机里的氧气含量比地面低。)”可知,导致落泪的原因和氧气含量有关,因飞机所在海拔高导致含氧量低,因此和海拔有关。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第四段划线句后句“Because the air in the plane is very dry, we may get dehydrated.(因为飞机里的空气很干燥,我们可能会脱水。)”
根据文章最后一段“You can drink plenty of water before your flight to fight back your tears. You can also keep your mind busy with a puzzle or brain game. And if you’re going to watch a movie, maybe choose one that’s a bit more relaxing.(你可以在飞行前喝大量的水来抑制你的眼泪。你也可以让你的大脑忙于益智游戏。如果你要看电影,可以选一部更放松的电影。)”可知,这一段作者主要讲了几个小提示来告诉读者,在飞机上不落泪的方法。故选B项。
C 13. B 14. B 15. A
根据第一段“The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.(事实上,它们是否不健康完全取决于你如何准备)”可知,食用方法决定了方便面是否不健康。
根据第二段“These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.(这些调味包含有高盐量和人工添加剂,导致该版本营养失衡且不健康)”可知,不健康方便面的主要成因是调味包中过量的钠盐与人工合成添加剂。
This transforms them into a balanced meal!(实际上,普通的方便面并不算太糟糕。

“It is/was one's first time to do sth.” 故填to play。
make的过去式是 made。故填made。
故填was chosen。
“be interested in”是固定短语,意思是“对……感兴趣”,所以这里填in。故填in。
故填the。

Thank you for writing to me. In your last letter, you asked me about my new school life. Now I’ll tell you.
Going to senior high school is a really big challenge, which puts us under a lot of pressure. Learning has become much more difficult because the knowledge we learn in class is wider and deeper. Besides, I was worried about whether I could fit in and make new friends on campus. Luckily, our teachers and classmates are kind and easy to get along with. Now I have built confidence in myself and my happiness is beyond description. I will keep working hard and go all out to improve myself every day.
Looking forward to your early reply.
