As the world’s largest real-time ticketing system, 12306 serves over 700 million users. The “super brain” behind this system is Shan Xinghua, leading researcher at the China Academy of Railway Sciences Corporation.
In 1996, Shan joined a new team with the task of creating a national ticketing system. Over the years, she has led the system through several big events.
The system was put into use in 2011, and it faced its biggest conundrum during the 2012 Spring Festival travel rush. It broke down several times because of the heavy visits. Faced with this problem, Shan told her team, “We must find a way, no matter how difficult it is.” Working around the clock, they successfully improved the system, allowing it to deal with over 1.4 billion daily visits and doubling its daily ticket sales capacity (能力).
In 2017, Shan and her team started the e-ticket reform in Hainan. Passengers could enter the station through facial scanning (面部扫描). Shan found the slow speed was the most serious problem with the system. Then Shan and her team spent several months developing a new facial recognition system. With it, passengers can pass through the ticket gate in about 1.5 seconds.
Shan said, “Technology should serve society and improve people’s lives.” To make travel more convenient, Shan and her team always listen to passengers’ voices. They hope to improve their services and satisfy more people.
( )4. When did Shan join the team to create a national ticketing system?

Scientists have studied animals’ feelings for hundreds of years. However, the past research mainly focused on animals’ negative feelings, such as expressions of pain and fear. This can help reduce animals’ suffering, but it doesn’t tell what brings them happiness.
Now some scientists are working together to better understand animals’ joy. They are trying to measure (测量) joy in animals in a new study. The scientists define (下定义) joy as a strong positive feeling which is caused by an event, such as seeing a friend or a favorite food. They have created a set of ways to measure the feeling in different animals. The scientists want to make sure that the final result is not from just guessing animals’ mind, but from scientific research.
Some signs of joy are connected with actions. For example, some scientists have noticed that chimpanzees (黑猩猩) make laugh-like sounds while they are playing. Other scientists have noticed that dolphins (海豚) produce joyful sounds when happy things happen to them.
However, actions do not tell the whole story. Horses seem to be happily playing, but they may actually have the opposite feeling: they are downcast. So the scientists are also examining animals’ brain chemistry and studying their body temperature changes to help tell if the animals are truly happy.
Learning about joy in animals can improve the care of animals. And the new study about animals’ happiness can also help better understand humans’ happiness.
( )8. What does the new study about animals focus on?
A. Their fear. B. Their happiness.
C. Their food. D. Their friendship.
( )9. Why are chimpanzees and dolphins mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To record the challenge of studying animals.
B. To explain the ways of making happy sounds.
C. To show the connection between joy and actions.
D. To tell the differences between two kinds of animals.
( )10. What does the underlined word “downcast” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Sad. B. Calm.
C. Moved. D. Surprised.
( )11. What does the writer think of the new study?
A. It makes people get close to nature.
B. It improves animals’ daily behavior.
C. It encourages people to keep animals.
D. It benefits both animals and humans.
D
“I think I might have bad news for you, Alice,” Willow said quietly as we stood near the welcome table. “This is Nature Camp. Tech Camp kids stay in totally different houses.”
“Nooo!” I said. “I must have clicked the wrong form on the website!”
We rushed back to ask, but were only told Tech Camp was already full.
I tried to act calm, but inside I felt down. Coding (编程) games were something I was looking forward to all summer.
“Look! Too many trees here,” I said. “I wonder if bears ever come around.”
“Oh! Wouldn’t that be the best?” Willow laughed. “You just reminded me of a joke.”
“What kind?” I asked.
“What do you call a bear with no teeth?”
“I don’t know—a very hungry bear?”
“No,” she said proudly. “A gummy bear! The candy we often eat!”
I couldn’t help laughing. “That’s really funny. I love gummy bears.”
“Me too—especially the green ones” Willow said. Then she added, “You just gave me an idea. Maybe you can design your game characters based on gummy bears.”
I sighed (叹气). “Only if I were in Tech Camp now.”
Later that night, we sat outside. Though I still wasn’t too excited, I found myself listening closely as the teacher told stories about the moon and stars. The air was cool, and the trees were quiet.
Willow moved over and whispered another joke. I smiled—happy to find that even a mixed-up plan could still hold something unexpected.

We all answer questions every day. But how do you know if your answer is actually reasonable (合理的)? Here are four simple ways to check.
Think about the logic (逻辑)
A reasonable answer must follow basic logic. If your answer disagrees with common knowledge, something is probably wrong. For example, if a math problem asks how many apples are in a basket, and you get “-5”, that isn’t reasonable. ____6____ Always ask yourself, “Does this fit the real world?”
Use real-life examples
Let’s say you are solving a science question, “Why do we feel cold in winter?” A reasonable answer is, “Because the temperature drops.” Now compare that with an unreasonable answer, “Because the sun gets angry.” The first answer uses facts. ____7____ When you give an answer, try to connect it to something you have actually seen or experienced.
____8____
Before you finish, ask yourself, “Is my answer close to what I expected?” Let’s do a quick math check. If you calculate 38×4, and you get 152, that feels right. But if you get 1,520, that is too big. Compare your answer with an estimate (估算). If they are very different, go back and check your work.
Ask yourself questions
This is the easiest method. Just ask yourself, “Is the answer reasonable?” “Can I explain the answer to a friend?” “Would my teacher accept the answer?” If you can’t explain your answer in simple words, you might not fully understand it yourself. ____9____
In short, a reasonable answer is logical, factual (事实的), close to your estimate, and easy to explain. ____10____ You will make fewer mistakes and feel more confident.
A. You cannot have negative apples.
B. Compare it with what you expected.
C. Connect it with what you already know.
D. A good answer should be easy to talk about.
E. The second sounds funny but has no science behind it.
F. Next time you finish a question, spend a few seconds checking.

There is lots of housework that needs doing around the home. However, according to a survey carried out in Sunshine Middle School, more than half of the teenagers don’t do any. To make more teenagers realize the importance of doing housework, the school held a discussion online last week. After the discussion, the school did a second survey. Here are some key points and the results of the surveys.
Yes! Three reasons teenagers should help around the home

No! Three reasons teenagers should not help around the home
·Teenagers already lead busy lives with homework and other activities. Doing housework on top of all those could be stressful.

Schools play an important role in our lives, as we spend much of our time there. Why do we go to school? Some believe that we go to gain knowledge, while others think that socializing (社交) is a necessary part of school life.
We go to school mainly to get qualification (学历) and learn facts, as the role of school is to develop us into adults and prepare us for working life, so its purpose becomes clear: gaining knowledge. Certificates (证书) of education level are required for further study and jobs. Learning subjects well helps us pass entrance exams, which provides choices for our paths to the future. It is also necessary for us to learn facts and develop an understanding of the world. For example, the knowledge of Physics and Chemistry can explain certain things in daily lives, which can help solve some problems. In Geography and History classes, we can learn about the way our environments are shaped over time. These allow teenagers to connect with the world and understand time and space that are beyond their reach.
However, some people believe socializing like working in groups and making friends is more important. They can help improve interpersonal skills and cultural understanding, and are good for our mental health. These are the keys to our growth and prepare us for the future.
At school, group work needs us to communicate and socialize with others. In this way, we can increase our ability to express ideas clearly, which makes it easy for others to understand us. Such skills cannot be developed from textbooks and are of great use in workplaces. It is also important for us to make friends at school. Research has shown that close friendships can help reduce stress, especially during teenage years. Making friends at school does not mean that we can’t learn facts well. Instead, the friendships can encourage us to study, so school should actively support students to develop healthy friendships.
I think school is the place where students should gain knowledge and develop socializing skills as well.

One possible version:
This term, I’ve improved a lot in my studies and daily life. I would like to share my story of growing up.
At the beginning of this term, I joined in a singing competition. At first, I was often too nervous to sing aloud. Instead of giving up, I asked my classmate Emily for help. She practiced with me every day and encouraged me to be confident. Finally, I performed wonderfully.
From this experience, I learned to take on challenges bravely and realized that solving problems actively helps us grow.
In the future, I will keep working hard when facing difficulties. I believe my effort will make me become a better self.
