One day, I was walking across campus when I spotted one of my students sitting on a bench, her face turned toward the sun, her eyes closed. I went over and asked if 1 could sit with her. When I asked how she was doing, she explained that her phone had “crashed”, and she was bored.
The moment reminded me how deeply we’re shaped by the digital world. Our devices, including computers, smartphones and the never-ending flow of online content, keep feeding us fresh updates, training us to expect continued stimulation. We’ve become trapped in a cycle of response, as if any pause were a problem to be solved.
My thoughts wandered back to my childhood—those afternoons spent staring out the window, doing nothing in particular. What felt like aimless boredom was actually a retooling period when my mind needed to reset before it could rediscover joy and invention. Before I knew it, I was building models, climbing trees, or playing instruments.
“What are your personal interests?” I asked my student. Her eyes lit up as she showed me her amazing artwork. “Have you ever felt bored while drawing?” I asked. “Never, ” she said, though ideas didn’t always come easily. “Does that annoy you?” “No,” she responded, “because I know that something will eventually pop into my head. When it does, it’s a real rush of satisfaction.”
That was it. That was exactly it. She needed to walk in the desert before arriving at the oasis (绿洲). She needed to experience a complete lack of inspiration before it struck her. This must have been what Ralph Waldo Emerson meant when he wrote, “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds...Improve them and they will become the brightest gems (宝石) in a useful life.”
As I left, I told her the truth:“I envy you”—not for her dead device, but for the creative space it had opened.
24. What is the author’s main concern over digital devices?
A. They cause unease during quiet pauses.
B. They require frequent software updates.
C. They often stop working without warning.
D. They may replace face-to-face interaction.
25. What role did boredom play in the author’s childhood?
A. It taught him to be patient. B. It gave him time to recharge.
C. It developed his rich imagination. D. It helped him avoid digital distraction.
26. What can we learn from the student’s response?
A. True artists never feel bored. B. Drawing requires special training.
C. Inspiration comes after waiting. D. Satisfaction begins when desire ends.
27. What advice is the author implying by saying“I envy you”?
A. Use phone less. B. Hold tight to youth.
C. Search for more treasure. D. Spare time for creativity.
A 25. B 26. C 27. D

Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate an endangered bird called the Plains-wanderer. Data obtained from such technology shows great promise and is expected to boost the recovery of its shrinking population.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. Not just any grasslands. Plains-wanderers are picky. There can’t be too much grass or too little. Zoos Victoria, the group behind the recent effort to locate Plains-wanderers, says the birds’ number has declined by over 85% in recent decades as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1,000 of the birds left in the wild. Scientists have put the species into a “family” all by itself, since there are no other similar birds. The female Plains-wanderers are larger, and are in charge of protecting the territory while the male birds are smaller and take care of the eggs.
To protect these rare birds, scientists first had to learn where they were, so Zoos Victoria worked with Queensland University of Technology on a plan to track the birds. Since Plains-wanderers were hard to spot, the team chose to “listen” for the birds instead. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Ooom” call, and this is the key to tracking them.
The researchers set up 35 special recording devices called “song meters” in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers could possibly have been. Song meters recorded all the sounds made in an area over a long period of time. The song meters collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings — far more than humans could analyse. So the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify the calls of Plains-wanderers. The AI system discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the sites. The scientists carried out further manual verification (核实) and confirmed the reliability of the AI system’s identification results. Chris Hartnett, who worked with Zoos Victoria, said it was like “striking gold”.
The new information will help scientists protect the birds. And the researchers are still “listening” — using song meters and AI to try to locate more of these Goldilocks birds.
28. What mainly leads to the sharp drop of Plains-wanderer numbers?
A. Increased natural enemies. B. Shortage of food sources.
C. Unstable climate conditions. D. Destruction of native habitat.
29. What can we infer about the AI system used in the research?
A. It can replace the need for human field work.
B. It is designed to record the birds’ unique calls.
C. It processes massive audio recordings efficiently.
D. It can increase the population of Plains-wanderers.
30. What does the underlined phrase imply in Paragraph 4?

Electric vehicles (EVs) could do more for our environment than simply replace gasoline. A new assessment of EV charging strategies, published in the Cell Press journal Joule, suggests EVs could serve as a vast network of mobile batteries — storing excess energy and feeding it back into the grid (电网)when demand increases greatly. This approach eases grid pressure, cuts emissions, and generates profits — but only if paired with timely grid upgrades.
“People debate whether EVs are truly green, as much electricity still comes from fossil fuels,” says senior author Ziyou Song of the University of Michigan. “Meanwhile, the grid struggles to absorb irregular and unpredictable renewable energy like solar and wind.”
Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology — software enabling charging stations to communicate with the grid — bridges both challenges, allowing EVs to draw power and send it back when needed. This two-way flow contrasts with current one-way charging systems. However, critics question the practicality of large-scale V2G deployment and the high upfront costs of necessary infrastructure
To assess V2G’s real-world potential, researchers examined the San Francisco Bay Area under different grid conditions. They projected EV ownership and solar energy adoption, mapped charging times and locations, and evaluated the cost-effectiveness of proactive versus phased grid upgrades.
“I was surprised by the results,” says Song. “The ideal solution is to upgrade the power system as soon as possible.”
If upgraded proactively, each charger needs just $0.12 to $0.18 daily to offset V2G costs, versus $1.49 to $1.78 for phased updates. Under California’s proposed decarbonization policies, V2G plus proactive upgrades could cut 2030-2045 annual emissions by up to 59,200 metric tons of CO2 equivalent and yield $47.5 million in total carbon incentive (奖励)profits.
“First upgrade the power system to support EVs, then scale V2G when needed — that’s the key,” Song emphasizes. Major grid assets like transformers last decades, while V2G chargers have limited lifespans and can expand with EV adoption.
32. What is the core function of V2G technology?
A. To replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.
B. To reduce the cost of EV chargers significantly.
C. To store excess energy only for EV owners' use.
D. To enable two-way energy flow between EVs and the grid.
33. Why do critics doubt the large-scale use of V2G?
A. It may damage the existing power grid.
B. It fails to cut carbon emissions effectively.
C. It cannot adapt to solar and wind energy systems.
D. It requires expensive initial infrastructure investment.
34. What is the ideal strategy for promoting V2G according to the study?
A. Delaying grid upgrades to save costs.
B. Scaling up V2G chargers before grid updates.
C. Upgrading the power system proactively first.
D. Focusing on carbon rebate revenue instead of emissions.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Are EVs the Future of Green Transportation?
B. V2G Technology: A New Way to Power Homes
C. How Electric Vehicles Could Back Up Our Power System
D. Carbon Policies: A Driver for EV and V2G Development

____38____ If you buy something new, or if your child gets new toys, you can make it a general rule that something should be given away — or thrown away in the case of things that are shabby or broken — in exchange.
Think of toys and clothes as consumables (like food, toilet paper or tickets to a movie). If you pay $10 for a toy and your children really enjoy it for a month and then it’s just taking up space, just think of that $10 like you’d think of the $10 you spent on a movie. ____39____ But just like you don’t have to keep the movie tickets, you don’t have to keep the toy.
Have a “giveaway box” on hand all the time and use that trash can freely. I routinely keep a charity donation box that fills up as I find things that have out-lived their usefulness. And my favorite aid to downsizing is my trash can. ____40____ It’s empowering!
A. It’s so easy to accumulate in our society.
B. We don’t even like or need them anymore.
C. I use whichever method fits the item in question.
D. When something comes in, something must go out.
E. It can be passed along to someone who might really enjoy it.
F. It was money well spent because it had provided nice enjoyment.
G. But there’s a far greater chance we won’t need those things again.

由上文“Moves are great for making you realize how much stuff you’ve accumulated (积聚) — and how little of it you actually use! (搬家会让你意识到自己积攒了多少东西,而实际用到的又少得可怜!)” 及下文“Things are relatively cheap and buying things is pretty much a national hobby. (物品价格相对低廉,购物几乎成了全民爱好)”可知,上文点明搬家发现自己囤积大量物品,下文分析社会层面容易购物囤货的原因,本空承接上文,说明在我们所处的社会中囤积物品十分容易。A 选项“在我们这个社会,囤积物品太容易了”能够承上启下,符合语境。
【37题详解】
由上文“There are so many things we keep because we think there’s a slight chance of needing them again. (我们保留很多东西,只因觉得还有一点点可能会再次用到)”及下文“And if you do happen to need it, it’s probably not that big a deal to get another one. (就算你真的碰巧需要它,再买一个也不是什么大事)”可知,上文讲人们留存物品的顾虑,下文假设真需要时的解决办法,本空进行转折,说明更大概率我们不会再用到这些东西。G选项“但更大的可能是我们再也不会需要这些东西了”承上启下,符合语境。
【38题详解】
由下文“If you buy something new, or if your child gets new toys, you can make it a general rule that something should be given away — or thrown away in the case of things that are shabby or broken — in exchange. (如果你买了新东西,或是孩子得到新玩具,你可以定下一条通用规则:要有旧物品被送走;破旧损坏的就直接扔掉,以此作为置换)”可知,下文阐述购入新物品就要处理掉旧物品的置换原则,本空为本段主旨句,概括这条规则。D选项“有东西进来,就得有东西出去”总领本段,符合语境。
【39题详解】
由上文“If you pay $10 for a toy and your children really enjoy it for a month and then it’s just taking up space, just think of that $10 like you’d think of the $10 you spent on a movie. (如果你花10美元买玩具,孩子开心玩一个月后它就只占地方,就把这10美元看作花在电影上的10美元)”及下文“But just like you don’t have to keep the movie tickets, you don’t have to keep the toy. (但就像你不必留存电影票一样,你也不必保留这个玩具)”可知,上文将买玩具的开销类比看电影的开销,下文讲不必留存玩具,本空说明这笔钱花得值,因为它带来过快乐。F选项“这笔钱花得很值,因为它带来过美好的愉悦体验”承上启下,符合语境。
【40题详解】
由上文“I routinely keep a charity donation box that fills up as I find things that have out‑lived their usefulness. And my favorite aid to downsizing is my trash can.

confirm...as...

由a small ancient pine forest, a patch of bushes growing on metal-rich soil, and a grassy meadow可知,空格处表示“未被记录的”,是unrecorded。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Short Videos: Helpful or Harmful to Students?
As the popularity of short videos increases, a critical question arises: Are short videos helpful or harmful to students? The answer lies not in labeling them as “good” or “bad”, but in how students choose to use them.
On one hand, short videos can be powerful tools for students’ learning and growth. Beyond academics, short videos also broaden students’ horizons, boosting their confidence and social skills. On the other hand, short videos pose significant risks if misused. The biggest challenge is their addictive nature, which not only harms academic performance but also disrupts sleep, leading to tiredness and poor focus in class.
To use them well, we students should choose carefully: pick study videos like English learning or fun science facts. Also, set a time limit — maybe 20 minutes a day. If we use short videos as learning tools, not just for fun, they can really help us!

I was an arrogant (傲慢的) high school boy full of blind self-confidence, firmly believing that I was more capable than all my classmates at managing group tasks. When our teacher formally announced that our school would hold a lively campus charity fair to raise money for poor children in remote villages, I volunteered without hesitation to take charge of the second-hand book stall. I also actively persuaded nearly ten warm-hearted classmates to donate their unused books to support my booth.
My thoughtful classmate Lina had kindly reminded me in advance to classify different kinds of books, mark clear and reasonable prices, and design simple promotional posters to attract visitors. However, I rudely turned down her sincere advice and even laughed openly at her for being overly cautious. I gathered large piles of various books, including interesting storybooks, popular magazines and practical exam reference books. Without any careful arrangement, I stuffed these mixed books randomly into several rough cardboard boxes.
On the official day of the charity fair, while other groups devoted plenty of time and energy to decorating their stalls with colorful ribbons and beautiful handwritten signs, I did almost no preparation at all. I just laid all my books in a total mess on the table and wandered around the campus casually, firmly convinced that high-quality books alone would naturally draw a large number of buyers.
As noon slowly rolled around, all the neighboring stalls were packed with busy and energetic students. In sharp contrast, almost no one stopped or spared a glance at my book booth. Worse still, several reference books accidentally slipped off the table and got badly stained by the fruit juice spilled by passing students.
Standing alone beside my cold booth, I watched Lina’s handmade toy stall become extremely popular and listened to their cheerful and merry laughter. Strong regret and great embarrassment wrapped me tightly. I fully realized that my stupid arrogance and laziness had wasted my classmates’ kind donations. Just as I sank into deep self-blame and despair, Lina finished her temporary work and walked straight towards me.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan.

When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One Possible Version
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan. Eager to make amends, I nodded gratefully and we set it in motion. Our forces joined, we split the messy pile into three categories: fairy tales, novels, and review materials. Lina set about creating eye-catching price tags with colorful pens, whereas I humbly borrowed long, elegant ribbons to decorate our table. Knowing students hunted for cheap books, we wiped the juice-stained copies clean and shouted warm promotions. Gradually, as a steady stream of curious buyers gathered, my face flushed with profound guilt for mocking her careful suggestions before.
When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list. To our immense thrill, the collected cash far exceeded our expectations. The heavy donation box in my hands, I turned to Lina with red-rimmed eyes. Not only did I formally apologize for my unbearable arrogance, but I also thanked her for saving the day. She accepted it softly, a forgiving smile washing away my lingering guilt. Ultimately, this unforgettable experience engraved a priceless truth in my mind: true success is rooted in collaboration rather than blind pride. From then on, I swallowed my ego, always ready to embrace others’ valuable advice.

A. The discovery proves vital to the research.
B. The AI equipment brings huge economic gains.
C. The Plains-wanderer’s population has unexpectedly recovered.
D. The research team has discovered gold mines near the grasslands.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Studies on the crisis facing a unique grassland bird.
B. Advanced technology for general wildlife observation.
C. Intelligent tools to track and conserve a threatened species.
D. Exploration of causes for a grassland bird’s population loss.
D

When I moved a few years back, I spent weeks sorting, packing, trashing and giving away. Moves are great for making you realize how much stuff you’ve accumulated (积聚) — and how little of it you actually use! ____36____ Things are relatively cheap and buying things is pretty much a national hobby. Here are a few rules of thumb to downsize stuff.
If in doubt, throw it out. There are so many things we keep because we think there’s a slight chance of needing them again. ____37____ And if you do happen to need it, it’s probably not that big a deal to get another one. So get rid of it!

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan.

As a science student, I was excited to participate in a national science writing competition, especially since I was about a topic I knew a lot about genetic engineer. Despite facing tough competition from other talented writers, I spent several days in the library reviewing all the literature available and writing to create a peace that was both accurate and accessible for a popular audience. The hard work paid off when I was selected to participate in the competition, and I was excited about the opportunity to share my knowledge and most importantly, make a name for myself in science journalism. While I don't know if I will win, i'm proud of what I have accomplished, and I want to see where this journey will take me. Through this experience, i've realized that consistently putting in the effort and staying focused on goals despite difficulties paves the way for a success and achievement even in the face of strong competition. I am looking forward to attending the awards ceremony and networking with fellow science enthusiasts. Perhaps I will even meet individuals who can assist me in achieving my dream of becoming a successful science journalist. I am grateful for the chance to follow my passion and make a positive impact on the world. Hi everyone, my name is Emily Johnson. I'm pleased to share my story with you.
