Y. — Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood — traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter. Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken. They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice. In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn. Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.” 24. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains? A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history. C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing. 25. What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3? A. They enjoyed much respect. B. They had a room with a bathtub. C. They lived with the local kids. D. They suffered severe hardships. 26. Which part of Wickenden’s writing is hair-raising? A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead. C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West. 27. What is the text? A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A children’s story. D. A diary entry. C Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly. Less than 1 percent of Swedish household waste was sent to landfills (垃圾填埋场) last year or any since 2011. We can only dream of such an effective system in the UK, which is new, but we end up paying expensive transport costs to send rubbish to be recycled overseas rather than paying fines to send it to landfills under the Landfill Tax of 1996. Why are we sending waste to Sweden? Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables. “In Sweden people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems. We worked on communications for a long time to make people not throw things outdoors so that we can recycle and use,” says Anria-Carin Gripwall, director of communications for Avfall Serve, the Swedish Waste Management’s recycling association. Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter. “That’s a key reason that we have this district network, so we can use the heating from the waste plants. In the southern part of Europe they don’t use the heating from the waste; it just goes out of the chimney. Here we use it as a replacement for fossil fuel,” M. Gripwall says. 28. Why has Sweden been importing rubbish from abroad in the past few years? A. To try out its recycling system. B. To keep its recycling plants running. C. To stop rubbish ending up in landfills. D. To make greater profits from rubbish. 29. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “sources” in paragraph 3? A. Consumes. B. Saves. C. Obtains. D. Improves. 30. How does Sweden handle the heating from the waste plants? A. By making use of it to heat homes. B. By exchanging it for fossil fuels. C. By selling it to other countries. D. By sending it out from the chimney. 31. What conclusion can be drawn from the text? A. Swedish rarely get close to nature. B. Swedish recycling system has been applied globally. C. Waste is imported only by the Swedish government. D Swedish have a strong environmental awareness. D The Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown. First announced in April, 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity (肥胖). It is believed that today’s children and teenagers are consuming three times the recommended level of sugar, putting them at a higher risk of the disease. Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £520m a year for the Treasury. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports. It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers (制造商) so they can avoid paying the tax. Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers’ efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures. Since April drinks companies have been forced to pay between 18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or import, depending on the sugar content. However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year. Today’s figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities (设施) and healthier eating in schools. Helping the next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great importance, and the industry is playing its part. 32. Why was the sugar tax introduced? A. To collect money for schools. B. To improve the quality of drinks. C. To protect children’s health. D. To encourage research in education. 33. How did some drinks companies respond to the sugar tax? A. They turned to overseas markets. B. They raised the prices of their products. C. They cut down on their production. D. They reduced their products’ sugar content. 34. From which of the following is the sugar tax collected? A. Most alcoholic drinks. B. Milk-based drinks. C. Fruit juices. D. Classic Coke. 35. What can be inferred about the adoption of the sugar tax policy? A. It is a short-sighted decision. B. It is a success story. C. It benefits manufacturers. D. It upsets customers. Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Our play The Lost World had a sudden accident — Lily, who played the lead role, hurt her ankle during practice and couldn’t perform. Without her, we had to either cancel the performance or find a replacement quickly. The whole team felt hopeless, because no one else knew her lines well enough. As the club’s scriptwriter (编剧), I called an emergency meeting after school to discuss whether there was anyone willing to take over Lily’s role. The whole room fell silent, with no one making a sound. Lily’s lines were long and emotional, and learning them in two weeks seemed impossible. I looked around — some members stared at their shoes silently; others whispered anxiously. Suddenly, Emma, a quiet girl who usually worked backstage, raised her hand. “I can try,” she said softly. “I’ve watched every practice and memorized most of the lines. I know I’m not as confident as Lily, but I don’t want our hard work to be wasted” Everyone was shocked. Emma had never acted before, but her eyes showed determination. We decided to give Emma a chance. However, during the first practice with her, she froze up several times and forgot her lines. Some teammates sighed in disappointment, and I could see Emma’s eyes filling with tears. Seeing her sitting alone silently at the back after practising, I walked over and put my hand on her shoulder: “No one becomes perfect overnight. We’ll practice with you every day. ” For the next weeks, we stayed after school, repeating scenes until Emma’s performance became more natural. Every member helped— some prepared backdrops and props; others practised acting and lines with her again and again. To much Emma’s relief, Lily even offered her some practical advice through video calls. Slowly, she became more and more confident and her performance became better and better. On the night of the festival, the auditorium was packed with teachers and students. As Emma walked onto the stage, I could see her hands shaking a little. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After the performance, the audience’s reaction surprised everyone. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 河南省信阳高级中学北湖校区2025-2026学年高二上期01月测试(二)英语试题 考生注意: 1. How much is the shirt? A 25. D 26. C 27. 根据第一段“In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.-Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood -traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. (1916年,来自纽约奥本市的两个富裕家庭的女孩——Dorothy Woodruff和Rosamond Underwood——来到落基山脉的一个定居点,在一间只有一个房间的学校教书)”可知,Dorothy和Rosamond去落基山脉是为了去学校里教书。故选A项。 根据第三段“They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning.(他们和一个当地家庭,哈里森一家一起搬进去,和他们一样,几乎没有隐私,很少洗澡,早上醒来时被子上覆盖着一层雪)”以及“In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.(在春天,雪被泥替代覆盖在冰上)”可推知,女孩们的生活条件非常艰苦,她们的生活饱受磨难。 根据倒数第二段“A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms.(令人毛骨悚然的一段与铁路建设有关,这涉及到在令人眩目的暴风雪中钻穿落基山脉)”可知,Wickenden的作品中涉及落基山脉的铁路建设这一部分是令人毛骨悚然的。 根据倒数第二段“The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.(这本书以Rosamond和Dorothy回到奥本结束)”以及最后一段“Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism of the people move her to some beautiful writing.( Wickenden是个很好的讲故事的人。大地的辽阔和人们的坚忍使她创作出了一些美丽的作品)”可知,本文简要介绍了Wickenden的书籍内容,并对其进行了评价,所以文本是一篇书评。故选B项。 【点睛】 C Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly. Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment. Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables. Over time Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter. D. Swedish have a strong environmental awareness. B 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第一段中“Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries so that its recycling plants can function smoothly.(瑞典非常擅长回收,以至于几年来,它一直从其他国家进口垃圾,以便其回收工厂能够顺利运转)”可知,瑞典从国外进口垃圾是为了保持其回收工厂的运转。 根据划线词所在句“Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables.(瑞典是1991年最早对化石燃料征收重税的国家之一,现在其近一半的电力_____可再生能源)”中“place a heavy tax on fossil fuels”和“almost half its electricity from renewables”可推知,因为对化石燃料征收重税,所以瑞典其近一半的电力来自可再生能源。 根据第五段中“Over time, Sweden has carried out a national recycling policy so that even though private companies undertake most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold Swedish winter.(随着时间的推移,瑞典实施了一项国家回收政策,这样,尽管私营公司承担了大部分进口和焚烧垃圾的业务,但这些能源会进入国家供热网络,为瑞典寒冷的冬天供暖)”可知,瑞典利用垃圾产生的热量为家庭供暖。故选A项。 根据第三段中“Their system is so far ahead because of a culture of looking after the environment. Sweden was one of the first countries to place a heavy tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in 1991 and now sources almost half its electricity from renewables.(他们的系统之所以如此先进,是因为有保护环境的文化。瑞典是1991年最早对化石燃料征收重税的国家之一,现在其近一半的电力来自可再生能源)”以及第四段中“In Sweden people are quite crazy about being out in nature and they have a clear idea of what needs to be done on nature and environmental problems.(在瑞典,人们非常喜欢置身于大自然中,他们对自然和环境问题需要做什么有清晰的认识)”可推知,瑞典人有强烈的环保意识。故选D项。 D The Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown. Today’s figures according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities (设施) and healthier eating in schools. C 33. D 34. D 35. 根据第二段中的“First announced in April, 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity.(该税于2016年4月首次宣布,适用于每100毫升含糖超过5g的软饮料,旨在帮助减少儿童肥胖)”可知,征收糖税的目的是帮助儿童减少肥胖,保护儿童健康。 根据第四段中的“It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers so they can avoid paying the tax.(此前,制造商已经降低了商店中销售的超过一半的软饮料的含糖量,以避免纳税)”可知,一些饮料公司通过降低了产品的含糖量来避税。 根据第五段中的“However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year.(然而,一些高糖品牌,如经典可口可乐,已经接受了糖税,并拒绝改变,因为担心会惹恼消费者。果汁、以牛奶为原料的饮料和大多数酒精饮料是免税的,每年生产不到100万升的小公司也是免税的)”可知,糖税主要来自经典可口可乐这些高糖品牌。故选D项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Today’s figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities and healthier eating in schools.(根据一位政府官员的说法,今天的数据显示了糖税的积极影响,它为学校的体育设施和健康饮食筹集了数百万英镑)”可知,糖税政策带来了积极影响。 Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge. ___36___. ·More isn’t always merrier Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both. ___37___. The friend who is remaining needs to be sensitive to all the additional time demands placed on the friend who has moved. The one in the new environment should be sympathetic to the fact that your friend may feel abandoned. · ___39___ Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you. ·Don’t rely on technology alone ___40___, but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain. Try to seek out chances to renew friendships. How to do it? Just spend face-to-face time together whenever possible. A. Remember important dates B. Compensate by writing letters C. It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper D. Try to find a time that works for both of you and stick to it E. Friends need to talk about their preferred methods of communication F. It is easy to have a sense of connectedness through social media G. You may be the friend who left or the one who was left behind 【答案】36. D 37. E 38. G 39. A 40. 【37题详解】 根据上文“Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both.”(确保你已经和你的朋友沟通过,了解你们想要联系的频率,以及哪种方法对你们双方都最有效)提到异地朋友之间要商量沟通方式,E项“朋友需要谈论他们喜欢的交流方式”承接上文,进一步提出对交流的方法的沟通,下文“There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.”(除了持续的文字交流,还有其他选择,比如留下语音信息或进行群聊)对E项中的“methods of communication”进行了举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选E项。 【38题详解】 根据下文“The friend who is remaining”(留下来朋友)和“The one in the new environment”(在新环境中的那个)提到朋友的两个不同处境,G项“你可能是朋友中离开的那一方,也可能是被留下的那一方”指出了异地友谊中分为离开的一方和留下的一方,其中“the friend who left”和“the one who was left behind”分别对应下文“The one in the new environment”和“The friend who is remaining”,所以G项符合题意。 故选A项。 As a child, I was convinced that a career in global health was for me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 As Emma walked onto the stage, I could see her hands shaking a little. She took a deep breath, glanced at our team and started. Her first line was steady. Though she paused once, she quickly relaxed, pouring emotion into her words. When acting out the danger scene, her voice trembled with the role’s fear, not nervousness. I held my breath, watching her move naturally, just like we’d practiced countless times. Soon, no one remembered she was a replacement. After the performance, the audience’s reaction surprised everyone. Silence hung briefly before the auditorium erupted in cheers. Students stood waving, teachers nodded in praise. Lily, in a wheelchair by the door, cried and clapped hard. Emma froze for a moment, then bowed deeply with tears in her eyes. We rushed to hug her. “You did it!” I said. She laughed through tears, “We did it.” That night, we learned teamwork turns crisis into wonder. Our play’s success was more than a show; it was an unforgettable lesson. 词汇激活 行为类: ①扫了一眼:glance at/cast a look at ②爆发:erupt/break out ③冲向:rush to/hurry to ④拥抱:hug/embrace 情感类: ①恐惧:fear/terror ②紧张:nervousness/tension ③赞扬:praise/commend 【点睛】【高分句型 1】Though she paused once, she quickly relaxed, pouring emotion into her words.(运用了though引导的让步状语从句及现在分词短语pouring emotion into her words作状语) 【高分句型 2】That night, we learned teamwork turns crisis into wonder.(运用了省略连接词that的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
