A good advertisement persuades you to buy the product or service, but a highly successful advertising campaign becomes a new catchphrase (流行语). The four successful advertising campaigns below show how important a clever slogan is for a company’s brand.
Nike: “Just Do It”
Nike adopted this slogan in 1988 while the company was in the midst of financial difficulties. This simple saying is now closely connected with the brand’s sports clothes. “Just Do It” is a perfect saying because it inspires a feeling of boldness and encourages consumers to try harder. Nowadays, the slogan has been referenced in music, television shows, movies, and everyday language.
Apple: “Think Different”
Although Apple’s advertising slogan was criticized for being grammatically incorrect, it still managed to make its way into the minds of consumers. Launched in 1997, the slogan asked consumers to act rebelliously (反叛地) and defy expectations in order to achieve greatness. Since this was the inspiring story of the founding of the company by Steve Jobs, it impressed many consumers.
American Express: “Don’t Leave Home Without It”
American Express first advised consumers that they shouldn’t leave home without it in 1975. The slogan was originally used to promote American Express Traveler’s Checks and the commercials featured the Academy Award-winning actor Karl Malden. Although Malden was the brand’s ambassador for over two decades, other celebrities such as Stephen King and Jerry Seinfeld have been featured in advertisements for American Express.
De Beers: “A Diamond Is Forever”
De Beers launched this simple slogan in 1947 and it’s still in use today. The slogan “A Diamond Is Forever” was created by Frances Gerety from the Philadelphia advertising agency NW Ayer. De Beers’s slogan changed most of Americans’ relationship with diamonds. Before the slogan, it was not usual to propose with a diamond engagement ring. Ian Fleming’s novel featuring the character James Bond was published in 1956 with the title “Diamonds Are Forever”, further promoting the slogan’s popularity.
1. Which of the following slogans was put forward to overcome crisis?
A. Just Do It B. Think Different
C. Don’t Leave Home Without It D. A Diamond Is Forever
2. What made Apple’s slogan impressive?
A. Its incorrect grammar. B. Its advanced ideas.
C. Its inspiring story. D. Its target customers.
3. What is special about De Beers’s slogan?
A. It was created by a novelist.
B. It misled people once launched.
C. It is the only one that has been used till today.
D. It changed Americans’ proposing custom.

Robert Bateman is a well-known wildlife painter who receives global popularity for his realistic and accurate depictions of the natural world. His numerous honors include hosting a major exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C. and selling more than a million copies of his books about his art and his love for nature.
But Bateman’s success has come with a demerit. Throughout his career, his highly realistic painting style has been repeatedly overlooked and rejected by critics for not being “serious” art. To this day, he’s never been invited to exhibit at the National Gallery of Canada.
“They think I’m just too digestible,” Bateman says. “I’m sort of like a simple cookie or something, but they prefer something a little harder to swallow.”
Now, at age 96, Bateman is the subject of a new documentary, The Art of Adventure, which reveals how Bateman fell in love with the natural world and what led him to launch a lifelong fight to protect it.
Though Bateman has been a keen artist and naturalist since childhood, he didn’t always paint in his signature realistic style. At certain points in his career, he experimented with impressionism and abstract expressionism. But after seeing some of Andrew Wyeth’s paintings, he says he realized that realism wasn’t simply decorative — it could be just as serious and thought-provoking (发人深省的) as abstract art.
Bateman personally regards his art as a way of fulfilling his mission of environmental advocacy and education. Realism, he says, is the most suitable way to express that.
“I’ve always loved young people and teaching, and spreading the word about nature,” he says. “I consider it a mission in life to let people know the names of their neighbors of other species. It’s all that particularity in knowing the names that I consider a mission in life. And that’s why my art also had to show this.”
4. Which is closest in meaning to “demerit” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Threat. B. Mistake. C. Disadvantage. D. Commitment.
5. Why does Bateman compare himself to a cookie?
A. His works lack artistic techniques. B. His art is seen as too easily accessible.
C. He brings people a sense of easy pleasure. D. He prefers simple subjects in his paintings.
6. How did Wyeth’s painting affect Bateman?
A. He switched to wildlife art. B. He began to care about the environment.
C. He reassessed the value of realism. D. He realized the limitation of abstract art.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Robert Bateman: A Deeply Misunderstood Painter
B. Robert Bateman: A Super Hardworking Painter
C. Robert Bateman: A Master Fighting for Nature
D. Robert Bateman: A Master of Abstract Wildlife Painting
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

C
On the waterside in Dun Laoghaire, a coastal suburb of Dublin, a small crowd gathers around colorful yoga mats (瑜伽垫). Naoise Ní Bhroin, a yoga instructor, calls for an inward breath to the sound of crashing waves. Her classes are mostly in Irish, long seen by many as a useless language, says Ms Ní Bhroin. But not any more.
A century ago, just 18% of the country’s population spoke Irish; UNESCO has declared it endangered. Yet today 1.8m people in Ireland (around 40% of the population) claim some ability to speak the language, up 71% from 1991. Nearly half of students now study Irish at advanced level in secondary school, compared with less than a third in 2005. In Northern Ireland, it has overtaken French as the second-most popular A-Level language after Spanish.
Exam reforms explain some of the growth. Final grades in Ireland now place greater emphasis on the oral exam. But Irish has also become cool. Cillian Murphy, an Irish actor, chose it for his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards in 2024. Paul Mescal, another actor, uses Irish casually on the red carpet. Irish-language storytelling and music are earning global recognition, from the film “The Quiet Girl” to Kneecap, an Irish-language music group. On social media, Irish-speaking influencers have made the language a fixture of everyday life.
Catherine Connolly, Ireland’s president since November 2025, said she would move Irish beyond ceremonial greetings to make it the official working language of the country’s presidential office. The government has set a 20% hiring target for Irish speakers in the public sector by 2030.
All this means growing demand for fluent Irish speakers. Darren O Rodaigh, chief executive of Gaelchultúr, a Dublin-based provider of Irish language courses, says that registration has more than doubled since 2020. Participation has expanded beyond teachers and academics to include young professionals in tech, health care, and entertainment. Around 1,900 candidates sat the state-certified Irish-language exam in the 2021-2022 academic year. In 2024-2025 the number was nearly 40% higher.
8. What can we infer about Ms Ní Bhroin?
A. She is a devoted Irish learner. B. She promotes Irish actively.
C. She teaches Irish through yoga. D. She uses Irish to make a living.
9. What does the data in paragraph 2 show?
A. More people know Irish than before. B. More students learn Irish at an early age.
C. Irish is now a dominant language in Ireland. D. Irish is overtaking Spanish in Northern Ireland.
10. Which of the following is a reason for the rise of Irish?
A. The great financial support from UNESCO. B. The reduction of oral exam weight in exams.
C. The decrease of English speakers in Ireland. D. The influence of pop culture and state policy.
11. What does the last paragraph indicate about Irish?
A. Its courses are now offered online. B. Its certification is now easier to obtain.
C. Its learners are from both home and abroad. D. Its demand is growing beyond traditional fields.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. D

D
Static electricity — the spark you feel when touching a doorknob or pulling on a sweater — may be a brief annoyance for humans. But scientists are discovering that it plays a major role in the survival of many small organisms. S. carpocapsae (斯氏线虫) can hold on to flying insects with the help of static electricity, according to new research.
The researchers discovered that electrically charged fruit fly’s wings generate an electric field of several hundred volts (伏) as they move through the air. This charge creates an opposite charge in the needle-tip-sized worm, creating an attraction that pulls the two together. They confirmed that the process is powered by static electricity.
The researchers wanted to investigate how electrostatic forces affect the success rate of S. carpocapsae to connect with a flying insect. S. carpocapsae is a roundworm that kills insects through a symbiotic (共生的) relationship with bacteria. It is increasingly used for biological pest control in agriculture, with researchers around the world studying how to further drive its effectiveness as a natural pesticide.
When the worm senses an insect overhead, it rolls up and then launches itself in the air as high as 25 times its body length. That’s the equivalent of a human being jumping higher than a 10-story building.
The researchers also found that only one out of 19 worms successfully reached the target in the absence of electrostatics. A charge of a few hundred volts generates an opposite charge in a jumping worm and significantly increases the odds of it connecting to a midair insect. A charge of just 100 volts resulted in a probability for hitting the target of less than 10%, while 800 volts boosted the probability of success to 80%.
A worm spends a vast amount of energy to jump and faces risks of predation (捕食) or drying out while suspended in the air. “Our findings suggest that, without electrostatics, it would make no sense for this jumping predatory behavior to have evolved in these worms,” says Victor Ortega-Jimenez, co-lead author and assistant professor of biomechanics at the University of California, Berkeley.
The work serves as a new framework for further investigations into the role of electrostatics in ecology. “We live in an electrical world, and electricity is all around us, but the electrostatics of small organisms remains mostly an enigma,” Ortega-Jimenez says. “We are developing the tools to investigate many more valuable questions surrounding it.”
12. What do we know about S. carpocapsae?
A. It saves lots of energy when jumping into the air.
B. It can be applied to agricultural biological pest control.
C. It produces symbiotic bacteria inside its body.
D. It seldom faces danger when hanging in mid-air.
13. Why does the author mention a 10-story building in paragraph 4?
A. To show the amazing jumping ability of the worm.
B. To describe the living environment of the worm.
C. To explain how high a building usually is.
D. To prove humans are poor at jumping.
14. What can we infer from Victor Ortega-Jimenez’s words in paragraph 6?
A. The worm can jump safely without facing any risks in the air.
B. It costs much energy for the worm to finish an adventurous jump.
C. Scientists uncovered the secrets of small organisms’ static electricity.
D. The jumping behavior of the worm developed thanks to electrostatics.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. How electric charges improve biological pest control.
B. How static electricity poses a threat to flying insects.
C. How electrostatics aids worms’ survival and hunting behavior.
D. How worms boost the effect of the charge within their bodies.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I used to believe success moved in a straight line. You worked hard, waited patiently, and the result would arrive like a neatly wrapped gift. That belief held true until this spring, when our physics teacher announced an innovation fair. I signed up immediately, convinced that this would finally be the stage where my late-night efforts would pay off.
My plan sounded impressive even to myself: a sensor-controlled bridge model designed to show how simple engineering can solve everyday problems. For weeks I worked alone in my room, surrounded by sketches (草图) and the soft noise of various tools. I told myself that independence was strength and that effort would be enough. When I carried the model into the school gym on the morning of the fair, I felt quiet pride. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was mine. I believed it would speak for itself.
The gym was alive with activity. Projects lit up, whirred (发出嗡嗡声), and came to life. My bridge stood near the wall, its wooden sides freshly painted and its wires carefully hidden. The first few visitors nodded politely as I demonstrated how the sensor was supposed to activate the small engine. Then the judges arrived. Halfway through my explanation, the engine hesitated. The bridge rose a few centimeters and froze. I tried again, but nothing happened. I felt the heat rise to my neck. The judges thanked me and moved on.
That evening, I carried the bridge home and placed it on my desk like a reminder of my failure. The next few days were worse. At school, everyone was talking about the winners and their clever designs, and I found myself keeping my head down to avoid anything that reminded me of the fair. One afternoon, while cleaning my desk, I opened the notebook where I had planned the project. Page after page was filled with rushed decisions and baseless assumptions. I had worked hard, but entirely alone, and I had treated testing like something unimportant. This understanding was more important than losing the competition. The failure was not because of bad luck, but my own mistakes.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided not to let the failure define me.

When the next fair arrived, I was ready to present my improved bridge.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】【参考范文】
I decided not to let the failure define me. I began by asking for help and testing every part of the model. After school, I stayed in the lab, sharing my design with classmates who were better at coding and mechanics. They asked tough questions, but I learned to welcome them. We took the bridge apart, checked the sensor, and ran the engine again and again until errors became a guide rather than an enemy. I took notes, revised my plans, and tested twice before I trusted the results. Slowly, the bridge started to rise smoothly with quiet certainty — and so did my confidence.
When the next fair arrived, I was ready to present my improved bridge. This time, I arrived with a team by my side and a checklist in my pocket. As the judges gathered, the sensor responded instantly, the engine ran without hesitation, and the bridge rose and held steady — exactly as we had tested it. When the results were announced, my name stood at the top. The applause felt warm, but what mattered more was the path that led there. I had not only fixed a bridge — I had rebuilt my understanding of what success truly meant. Success does not move in a straight line — it grows through revision, shared effort, and the courage to try again.

A
A good advertisement persuades you to buy the product or service, but a highly successful advertising campaign becomes a new catchphrase (流行语).
B

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
