I had no idea it was possible to sweat so heavily without engaging in any physical activity. I wasn’t standing at the open door of a plane thousands of feet in the air, ready to jump out into the wild, blue sky. Rather, I was simply sitting on my bed, wearing my most comfortable clothes, and waiting to hit the “Enter classroom” button on my computer. I had signed up for an online language lesson with a Portuguese language tutor. For the past few months, I had been studying the language and I knew video chat was the next best option.
As I clicked the button, a friendly face popped up on the screen in front of me. At that moment, my mind froze. Feeling my nervousness, my tutor said something I still remember today, “Learning a new language is like showing your weakness to the world. It can be uncomfortable.” The ice was officially broken. As I’ve progressed along on my language journey, I often think back to her insight.
She is right. We take as a given the power to express ourselves freely, and when that power is taken away, we are brought to a place of weakness. Yet if we keep pushing forward despite this weakness, we will unlock a wealth of valuable gains.
My three-year-old son has big feelings but has insufficient vocabulary to properly express himself. When I started learning Portuguese, I realized how difficult it must be for him to be understood in the adult world around him. I’m a better parent now.
When my husband and I finally visited Portugal and ordered food in Portuguese at a small shop, the server thanked us for taking time to learn their language. Learning Portuguese taught me that attempting to learn someone else’s language shows respect not only for their homeland but for the people themselves.
Taking on the challenge of Portuguese has also awakened a fire within me. If you had told me a year ago that I would be taking a writing course, competing in competitions at my gym, or learning about car maintenance, I truly wouldn’t have believed it. Now I deeply believe that challenging yourself can be rewarding in ways you will never know unless you attempt it.
24. How did the author feel on hearing the tutor’s words?
A. Shocked. B. Defensive. C. Concerned. D. Relieved.
25. What can be inferred from the author’s experience with her three-year-old son?
A. Learning a second language helps adults understand children’s struggles.
B. Children have a better ability to learn languages than adults anytime and anywhere.
C. Parents should not force their children to express themselves.
D. Portuguese is especially difficult for parents to learn in real life.
26. Why does the author mention the server’s thanks in Portugal?
A. To show that Portuguese people are very friendly to tourists.
B. To argue that ordering food is the most useful language skill.
C. To illustrate that learning someone’s language shows respect.
D. To prove that her Portuguese pronunciation was perfect.
27. What message does the author seem to convey to the readers?
A. It is never too late to learn something new.
B. Leaving the comfort zone offers new visions of life.
C. Taking on challenges may bring perfection.
D. Language learning helps clear up misunderstandings.

Mushrooms have been used by ancient humans for thousands of years, but archaeologists have only just uncovered their significant role in shaping civilisation.
Seventy-five years ago, in a wetland in Yorkshire, UK, archaeologists found the perfectly preserved remains of dozens of 11,000-year-old mushrooms. Carefully cut and intentionally burned, it is thought that they were used by hunter-gatherers as tinder on their travels, enabling them to stay warm and cook food while on the move.
The discovery was so unlikely because fungi (菌类) are composed mostly of water, meaning they rapidly rot and disappear, and so are almost totally absent from the fossil record. As such, the unexpected ways that mushrooms helped our ancient ancestors survive have long remained secret, seemingly lost to time. But in the past few years, new tools have finally allowed us to identify fungal DNA and micro-residues in the mouths, utensils and clothing of prehistoric humans.
Until a decade ago, prehistoric diets were thought to consist only of meat and plants, excluding mushrooms. Yet rooted views about ancient daily choices are quietly shifting. In 2017, Weyrich’s team analysed the DNA in Palaeolithic dental plaque. They revealed that a group of Neanderthals in what is now Belgium supplemented their meaty meals with grey shag mushrooms, while those from a cave in northern Spain dined on split gill mushrooms. One member of the Spanish group, who lived around 48, 000 years ago, even chewed on grasses with penicillin fungi, and may have deliberately sought out this antibiotic fungus to reduce dental pain.
These breakthroughs are highlighting how a hidden fungal kingdom fed, healed and warmed our Stone Age ancestors, with recent discoveries even illustrating how fungi helped hold early farming communities together, paving the way for the civilization we live in today. “By revealing the invisible evidence in the archaeological record, we now see how fungal connections helped the earliest Neolithic communities to develop an understanding of their land and their society,” says Li Liu at Stanford University in California.
28. What does the underlined word “tinder” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. Travel food. B. Fire starter. C. Ancient medicine. D. Cutting tool.
29. Why was little known about ancient mushroom use?
A. Ancient people hid the evidence. B. Early humans rarely used fungi.
C. Fungi decompose too fast for preservation. D. Modern technology was once limited.
30. What can we infer about the Spanish Neanderthal?
A. He was a skilled hunter-gatherer.
B. He struggled with a food shortage.
C. He preferred eating mushrooms to meat.
D. He possessed some basic medical knowledge.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Fungi’s vital role in human civilization.
B. Changing diets of prehistoric humans.
C. Evolutionary history of ancient fungi.
D. New tools used in modern archaeology.

On the night of May 24, a Long March-2F Y23 rocket lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center and sent the Shenzhou-23 manned spacecraft into preset orbit. The fully successful launch kicked off China’s 2026 manned space flight tasks, bringing multiple technological breakthroughs.
The most important upgrade lies in the triple-layer anti-ablation (反烧蚀) cabin windows. After window cracks on Shenzhou-20 once forced an unexpected extended orbit stay and triggered China’s first emergency manned launch, engineers completely redesigned the window structure. The old single anti-ablation glass was replaced with two ablation-resistant layers plus an inner protective layer. The new structure greatly boosts the ability to resist impacts from tiny space debris and better guarantees astronauts’ safety in orbit.
Spacccraft of this batch also saw a huge leap in return cargo capacity. Earlier Shenzhou craft could only bring roughly 50 kilograms of samples back to Earth, forcing researchers to pick limited experimental items carefully. After upgrades, the return capsule can carry over 100 kilograms of payload, with cargo room tripled. Inside the cabin, new lightweight display consoles (轻量化显示控制台) cut weight and volume while enabling astronauts monitoring of flight data. A fast hatch leak tester quickly checks air tightness during station access, and retractable (可伸缩的) carbon fiber control sticks fit astronauts’ hands perfectly for more accurate operation.
Shenzhou-23 achieved China’s first 3.5-hour fast radial docking (径向交会对接) with the Tiangong space station, widely seen as the trickiest docking mode, like threading a needle in space. Unlike front and rear docking, which can take advantage of steady temporary parking positions to reduce system pressure, radial docking has no stable holding point, requiring the spacecraft to constantly adjust its flight posture and orbit and maintain continuous dynamic control. The guidance system has to balance fuel use in real time, demanding ultra-high speed, precision and autonomous operation. Meanwhile, upgraded sensors continuously monitor cabin pressure, temperature, humidity and gas makeup to track internal living conditions round the clock.
Besides hardware improvements, nine scientific experiments are onboard, with rice cultivation standing out as a landmark project. For the first time worldwide, researchers will complete two continuous generations of rice growth in orbit: rice will mature and be harvested in space, then its seeds replanted for a second growth cycle. Two control groups are set for comparison — offspring (后代) of rice grown in space before, and rice seeds that have never left Earth. The data will reveal how long-term weightlessness influences rice genes and growth, laying groundwork for future food planting on the Moon and Mars.
Another key test targets perovskite (钙钛矿) solar cells. Featuring high energy efficiency, light weight and outstanding power output, they are viewed as ideal power supplies for future space facilities. On this mission, the space station runs its first in-orbit dynamic test of such cells, recording efficiency loss under harsh cosmic environments to analyze their long-term service performance.
32. Why did engineers redesign the cabin windows of Shenzhou series?
A. Single-layer glass could not watch space debris clearly.
B. Broken windows on Shenzhou-20 caused an emergency manned launch.
C. The old windows took up too much space inside the spacecraft.
D. Single-layer windows failed to stop sunlight from entering the capsule.
33. What change has taken place in the return cargo capacity of upgraded Shenzhou spacecraft?
A. It can carry about 50 kg more samples than former models.
B. The cargo space inside the capsule has been cut down greatly.
C. Its payload weight is strictly doubled to exactly 100 kilograms.
D. It still can only carry a tiny amount of experimental samples home.
34. What makes radial docking much harder than front and rear docking?
A. It needs fewer fuel adjustments during the whole process.
B. It depends on stable temporary parking positions in orbit.
C. It requires continuous dynamic adjustment without fixed holding points.
D. Its guidance system only works at low speed with low precision.
35. What can we infer from the passage about the experiments aboard Shenzhou-23?
A. The rice project has been completed several times in previous space missions.
B. Rice seeds from Earth will produce higher-yield crops in space.
C. Perovskite solar cells have already been widely used in space stations.
D. Rice experiments will help lay a foundation for off-planet food planting.

The Yi People’s Torch Festival, a national-level intangible cultural heritage, is grandly celebrated from late June to early July in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan, where the majority of Yi ethnic groups reside. 36 . This 2000-year-old heritage originates from ancient Yi people’s fire worship and harvest prayer ceremonies.
In Yi’s ancient civilization, fire carries sacred symbolic meaning. 37 . Local villagers believe that lighting torches in midsummer can drive away pests, eliminate plagues (消除瘟疫) and pray for a bumper autumn grain harvest. The three-day festival contains complete traditional ethnic rituals (仪式). Villagers parade with pine torches around villages at dusk. Afterwards, locals gather around huge bonfires to sing folk songs, perform ethnic dances and play traditional ethnic musical instruments. 38 .
For a long time, this ethnic ICH faced narrow public influence. It was only popular in remote mountainous ethnic areas. Restricted by poor transportation and backward publicity, few outside tourists knew about this distinctive midsummer festival. 39 . Local governments combine ethnic heritage display with rural summer tourism during the tourist peak season.
Nowadays, countless domestic and foreign tourists flood into these mountainous areas to experience its grand bonfire parties. Local teenagers are organized at school to learn festival rituals, acting as core new-generation inheritors. The once secluded ethnic heritage has stepped onto a broader public stage.
40 . It boosts local rural tourism, promotes sales of ethnic specialties and creates grassroots jobs for mountain residents. This cultural tourism model helps remote ethnic areas realize sustainable development without losing unique ethnic features.
A. It is regarded as “the Ethnic Carnival of Southwest China”.
B. It stands for purity, disaster prevention and crop prosperity.
C. Fire worship is the most simple ritual among all Yi ethnic traditions.
D. Most ethnic festivals rely on local government financial support completely.
E. Moreover, the festival brings obvious economic and social benefits to local areas.
F. Traditional sports like bullfighting and horse racing are also held on this occasion.
G. However, effective official measures have changed the awkward situation greatly.

Every evening, I read the local newspaper to Grandpa. One day, I found a heated debate: the town council 45 to cut down the oak to make way for a new parking lot. They 46 it was for progress. My initial 47 was logical: a parking lot would be more useful.
But then, I saw deep sadness in my grandpa’s eyes. He began sharing the 48 of the tree — how generations had gathered under its branches for celebrations and comfort. He spoke of its 49 as a strong link that joined people through the years. For the first time, I saw that his passion was not just about the past, but about real value that I had 50 .
So I researched town laws, 51 alternative plans that would save the tree, and used data to convince the council that progress didn’t mean 52 the past. I tried to save the tree, for the 53 meaning it held in my grandpa’s heart.
In the end, we saved the oak. That summer taught me that passion is not just about building the 54 ; it is equally about preserving the essential. Progress and respect for the past can grow 55 — just like the deep roots and strong branches of that old tree.

Asher loved spending time in his grandfather’s garden. Every evening, he carefully held the watering can as his grandfather showed him how to pour just the right amount on each plant. “These plants need us, Asher,” Grandpa often said. “If we take care of them, they will take care of us.”
Asher loved plants. He loved their bright green leaves, the way they danced in the wind, and how fresh they smelled after rain. Plants made him feel calm and safe. But when it came to people, Asher was not so confident. At school, he was one of the quietest kids. While others laughed and played loudly, he often sat alone, unsure how to join them.
One afternoon during break, Asher walked past the big oak tree (橡树) near the playground. A group of kids stood nearby, pulling leaves from its lower branches and throwing them into the air. “Look! Leaf rain!” one of them shouted, laughing.
Asher’s chest tightened. He loved trees. He knew that leaves helped trees breathe and grow. He wanted to say something, but fear held him back. What if they laughed at him? What if they ignored him? After a moment, he turned away and walked back to the classroom without saying a word.
That evening, Asher sat in the garden with his grandfather, watering the plants as usual, but his mind was not at peace. His silence did not escape Grandpa. After a while, Asher shared what had happened at school and how he felt. He explained that he wanted to protect the tree but did not feel brave enough.
His grandfather listened carefully. He told Asher that courage does not mean being fearless. It means doing what is right, even when fear is present. He reminded Asher that change often begins with one small voice and one brave choice. Those words stayed in Asher’s mind all night.
