She let the cow out to walk in the nearby fields every morning and led it back home in the evenings, staying with the woods and her animal neighbours every day. One evening, when Sylvia walked back home from the fields, she saw a stranger coming out of the forest. When the man reached her, he explained that he was quite interested in collecting rare birds and was searching for the white heron (苍鹭) nesting (筑巢) in the area according to his book. He asked if he could stay at her house. Though Sylvia was a little bit worried, she led him to her grandmother. Over dinner, Sylvia’s grandmother told the man how her son had loved making friends with animals while he enjoyed living in the wild and that Sylvia was just the same. On hearing the news, the man offered Sylvia a lot of money to help him find the white heron, telling her that he planned to shoot (打猎) and put it into his collection. Sylvia knew her grandmother had little savings, so she accepted. The next day, Sylvia and the man searched the forest for the white heron, but they came back empty-handed. At first, Sylvia was afraid of the man’s shooting and collection plan. With some time passing by, she was surprised to find that he was a person with a warm heart and rich knowledge of birds. The two led the cow home together in the afternoon. Just before bed, Sylvia remembered that one tree in the forest stood taller than the rest. If she managed to climb it, she would surely find the heron’s nest below. The thought made her so excited that she couldn’t sleep. She finally got out of the house in the early morning to find the heron before the man awoke. Reaching the top of the tree was a success in itself, but nothing was more amazing than the moment Sylvia truly saw the heron. High as a bird, she felt she and the heron were one, and she suddenly realized she couldn’t be part of its death. The man was waiting for her when she returned home, but she refused to help him any longer. Later, Sylvia wondered whether giving up the money — and the man’s friendship — was really worth (值得) the heron’s life, but the treasures she might have gained were easily forgotten among the beauty of the wild. —Synopsis (摘要) of A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett 19.According to the passage, Sylvia is ________ and the bird collector is ________. They are highly intelligent, social, and play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature. Social Structure Wolves live and hunt in groups called packs. A typical pack has about 6 to 12 wolves, but some can have as many as 20. The pack is led by a male and female called the alpha pair. These leaders make decisions about where to hunt and when to move. Every wolf in the pack has a role. Some are hunters, others are protectors, and some take care of the young pups. The pack works together like a team. Communication Wolves communicate in many ways. They use howls, growls, and barks to send messages to each other. Howling helps wolves find each other when they are separated. It also warns other packs to stay away from their territory. Wolves also use body language—tail position, ear movement, and facial expressions all mean something to other wolves. Hunting and Diet Wolves are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. They hunt large animals like deer, elk, and moose. They use teamwork to catch their prey. Wolves may chase an animal for a long time, taking turns to run so they don’t get tired. Only about 10% of their hunts are successful, but that is enough for the pack to survive. Wolves also eat smaller animals like rabbits and rodents. Wolves and the Ecosystem Wolves are what scientists call a keystone species. This means they have a very big effect on their environment. When wolves are present, deer populations stay smaller. This allows plants to grow, which helps other animals. When wolves were removed from Yellowstone National Park in the US, the whole ecosystem changed. When wolves were brought back, the ecosystem recovered. Threats to Wolves Despite their importance, wolves face many dangers. People have hunted them for centuries because they feared them. They have lost much of their natural habitat to farms and cities. In some places, wolves are still hunted today. However, conservation efforts have helped wolf populations recover in many areas. The return of wolves to Yellowstone is one of the greatest conservation success stories in history. A.选择填空 22.What is a pack of wolves? A.A group of wolves that hunt together. B.A type of wolf found only in Asia. C.A wolf’s home. D.A baby wolf. 23.How do wolves communicate with each other? A.Only by howling. B.By using howls, body language, and other sounds. C.By writing messages. D.By swimming in circles. 24.What is the success rate of wolf hunts? A.About 50%. B.About 30%. C.About 10%. D.About 80%. 25.Why are wolves called a keystone species? A.Because they are the largest animals in the forest. B.Because they have a very big effect on their environment. C.Because they are the most feared animals. D.Because they only live in Yellowstone. B.判断正误(T/F) 26.Wolves live alone and don’t like to be in groups. 27.Wolves use body language to communicate with each other. 28.The return of wolves to Yellowstone was not successful. 29.Wolves are still hunted in some places today. This allows plants to grow, which helps other animals.”,此答案是对该段信息的概括总结,说明狼通过控制鹿的数量来维持自然平衡,使植物得以生长并帮助其他动物。 31.“Wolves and the Ecosystem”部分指出“When wolves were removed from Yellowstone National Park in the US, the whole ecosystem changed. When wolves were brought back, the ecosystem recovered.”,狼群回归后,黄石公园遭到破坏的生态系统得以恢复,直接提取原文信息作答。 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
