There I was, after 12 hours of travel, standing on Lexington Avenue and hoping for a New York miracle. I’d only been in Manhattan for an hour, and already was flagging down a taxi late at night and shouting, “Follow that cab(出租车)!”
Well, more clearly: “Follow that little dot (点) on this tiny map.” Meaning the GPS-enabled dot moving around a screen as part of the Find My iPhone function. The dot showed that somewhere out there, in one of New York City’s other 13,000 taxi cabs, sat my daughter’s blue bag that she’d left behind, with her diary, school laptop, notebooks, iPhone and AirPods she’d bought with her saved-up money.
The daughter, who at that very moment was on the hotel bed regretting her thoughtlessness, was in tears. I was a small-town dad in a huge, unfamiliar metropolis (大都市), with maybe half an idea of what I was doing, at best. But I couldn’t stand to see her crying. I had to get that bag back.
Let me explain what happened: at the airport, we’d had to take another taxi cab to get a ride into Manhattan. Our first taxi driver asked for a fare (报车费) higher than it should have cost, and when I asked why, he immediately threw us out of his cab. Upon our arrival at our hotel, an hour later, we realized the first taxi driver had sped away with the bag inside.
While I called 311 (非紧急市政热线), my wife remembered she’d set up tracking on our daughter’s phone just in case. She pulled up its map, excited to discover a little dot that updated every 15 seconds or so, traveling around the streets of midtown. Talking to the woman working at 311, I remarked, “I even planned to get another cab and go after this dot on the map!”
“Well,” she said, “that’s probably what a New Yorker would do.” Challenge accepted. I rushed to the hotel gate, the first taxi driver then pulled over and laughed at my wild goose chase, but the second said, “Yeah. Get in.” His name was Gani. And so began our three-hour hunt for the missing bag.
24. How did the daughter feel when she found her bag was lost?
A. Indifferent. B. Upset. C. Angry. D. Relaxed.
25. When did they realize the loss of the bag?
A. After reaching the hotel. B. Upon changing taxis.
C. On the way to Manhattan. D. After calling the hotline.
26. What did the author consider doing after discovering the dot on the map?
A. Continuing to call 311. B. Waiting for the dot to come to him.
C. Finding another cab to pursue the dot. D. Giving up on looking for the lost item.
27. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A. People in big cities were more helpful. B. Technology could make a difference.
C. New York was an unfriendly city. D. The hotline service offers limited support.
C
The Face-down Generation
If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s. The oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (发短信和自拍) to become successful in real life?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoilt (宠坏的) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents”. They were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with homework and extracurricular activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents like this, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s adults are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic (热情的) and willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you will do great and laugh out loud.
28. Why are the oh-ohs regarded as the “face-down generation”?
A. They focus heavily on their screens. B. They show little interest in global events.
C. They prefer taking selfies to real communication. D. They have trouble balancing study and friendship.
29. What would a “helicopter parent” do?
A. They do everything for their kids.
B. They give a lot of homework to their kids.
C. They take part in many extracurricular activities.
D. They would live like teenagers even if they are adults.
30. What’s the author’s opinion about the ohohs?
A. They are spoilt. B. They need to change.
C. They are full of hope. D. They are independent.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The lifestyle of the “face-down generation”.
B The advantages of the “face-down generation”.
C. Opinions and facts about the “face-down generation”.
D. The challenges faced by the “face-down generation”.
D
The group member misses the deadline. The classmate talks loudly during your exam study. The parent focuses only on the one low grade. Situations such as these often get our hearts racing and make us angry. Anger isn’t a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others shout out in anger. Both habits influence our bodies, our minds, and our relationships negatively.
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy. “A lot of people think they have to free themselves of their anger.” says Patrick Keelan, a mental health expert. “But anger is an emotion built into us to signal (发信号) that something needs to be dealt with.” When we take notice of that signal and actually deal with the problem instead of ignoring it, we’re usually much better.
One method of dealing with anger is to talk about it. Brain imaging at the University of California Los Angeles has shown that if you name your feelings, you can actually calm the activity in the amygdala (杏仁核), the part of the brain that causes the letout of hormones (激素) that lead to anger.
It helps to have a cool down period before trying to explain to someone you’re angry with how he or she rocked your boat. Do some controlled breathing or find some physical activities to reduce the anger. That will allow for the effects of the hormones to disappear, which in turn allows you to think about what’s troubling you.
When you’re ready to talk to the other person, focus on the behavior and why it concerns you, not the person’s character. Don’t make general complaints, such as “You always do this”. Bring up your reasonable points to the other person in a way that is most likely to get a constructive (有助益的) response.
If you’re on the receiving end, remember that it’s good to admit and try to understand the other person’s anger. Try offering to make a change if you are really wrong. If you’re willing to work through heated situations, the other person will be much more likely to mention this matter peacefully in the future. In the end, you’ll both be healthier.
32. What does the underlined word “bottle up” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Express. B. Hide. C. Improve. D. Recognize.
33. Which of the following statements might Patrick Keelan agree with?
A. Anger is a negative but common feeling.
B. Anger is a natural feeling but should be avoided.
C. Anger is an inner emotion that we seldom notice.
D. Anger is a signal that things go wrong with your mood.
34. What is the author’s advice for dealing with anger?
A. Focusing on changing the other person’s character.
B. Voicing your anger immediately to prevent buildup.
C Naming your feelings to calm down before discussing.
D. Using sentences like “you always...” to stress your point.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why is anger a healthy feeling?
B. Why do people often get angry?
C. How can you stop an angry person?
D. How can we deal with anger the right way?

Guiding Children in Choosing After-school Activities
Many children today face stress from school, friends, or competition. Nina Kaiser, a psychologist based in San Francisco, reminds parents that after-school activities should not add more pressure. __36__ Kaiser points out, “Younger kids often try many activities because they are still finding out what they like — and that is normal.” So how can parents help their children choose the right activities?
To begin with, parents should allow children to join in the decision-making. __37__ When they feel that their voices are heard, they often show more energy and excitement toward the activity.
Next, it is necessary to value each child’s personal interests. Every child has different hobbies and talents (天资). If parents force them to do something they dislike, children may feel stressed or upset. __38__ This will make learning easier and more enjoyable.
__39__, Sometimes children may want to give up on an activity. Parents do not need to decide right away. Instead, they should talk with the child, wait patiently, and think of possible changes. Through discussion, both sides can find a solution together.
Lastly, parents should avoid putting too much pressure. Not every child will find his or her passion (爱好) right away. It is normal for children to face difficulties at the beginning, especially when they are still learning. __40__
A. What matters is to study something useful.
B. Parents shouldn’t allow them to drop the activity.
C. Another key point is to keep open communication.
D. Instead, they should give children the chance to learn and grow.
E. With patience and support, they will finally find what they love.
F. Even younger kids can share their thoughts about what they enjoy.
G. A better way is to help them choose an activity that fits their ability and interest.
