Dear Sherry,
Thank you for writing to me. In your last letter, you asked me about my new school life. Now I’ll tell you.
Going to senior high school is a really big challenge, which puts us under a lot of pressure. Learning has become much more difficult because the knowledge we learn in class is wider and deeper. Besides, I was worried about whether I could fit in and make new friends on campus. Luckily, our teachers and classmates are kind and easy to get along with. Now I have built confidence in myself and my happiness is beyond description. I will keep working hard and go all out to improve myself every day.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

At age 90, I finally realized that I qualify as “elderly”. However, I don’t ever want that label of “senior citizen”. How I look and feel is only part of facing reality. The big factor is how other people treat me. This hit me rather dramatically as I was exiting a building the other day. As I started for the door, a young woman stepped ahead of me. Then she opened and held the door for me.
I expected an active retirement, but my body had other plans. I’m learning to embrace it. This kind of thing is beginning to happen all the time. At the hardware store, I bought a few minor items — light bulbs and birdseed weighing perhaps a total of 10 pounds. As I started to pick up the bag, the cashier said, “Sir, let me get someone to help you with that.”
For a few weeks, all of these made me sad. I am a man of a certain generation after all: former Air Force officer and jet fighter pilot, former corporate executive, author, former speaker and consultant, and so on. But I’m too old for anyone to hire me even if I wanted them to. It can be depressing. It didn’t help a lot to realize that I’ve had a great life. But as I thought about that, trying my best to count my blessings, it began to sound like an obituary (讣告).
It has taken several weeks to realize that respect and learn from the past, but don’t let yourself be held prisoner by your memories; and always look to the future with optimism but live in the present, treasuring every single minute of every single day, even the ones that your younger self would have complained about.
Finally, when all those younger folks offer to help, let go of the chagrin, realize that it makes other people feel good to help and just say, “Thank you.” I think they, whoever they are, refer to that as aging gracefully.
24. What made the author realize he was elderly?
A The help offered by a young woman. B. The memories of his successful past.
C. His label “senior citizen” given by society. D. His physical appearance and health condition.
25. How did the author firstly react to being treated like an old person?
A. He was indifferent. B. He felt spiritless.
C. He was bored with it. D. He accepted it agreeably.
26. What do we know about the author from the text?
A. He is lost in his past success. B. He has an idea for his obituary.
C. He is suffering memory loss. D. He has a positive outlook on life.
27. What does the underlined word “chagrin” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fear. B. Past. C. Confidence. D. Annoyance.
C
Have you ever been on an airplane, minding your own business, and found your eyes filled with tears for no reason? Or perhaps you sat near someone who burst into tears. Is there something happening to your body that triggers (引发) the tears?
There sure is! When you’re inside a flying airplane, you’re miles off the ground. Not exactly a place where humans usually find themselves. The airplane is pressurized (加压) to keep passengers comfortable. But it’s still not the pressure levels that you’ll experience at ground level. It’s a bit like having climbed a pretty high mountain.
The primary tear-trigger is the lower amount of oxygen in your blood. The oxygen levels in the plane are lower than what you’ll find on the ground. And it can bring you bad feelings.
Another cause is dehydration. Because the air in the plane is very dry, we may get dehydrated. And being dehydrated can have all kinds of harmful effects on your 30,000 foot-high body, which is making you have bad feelings like sadness and worry.
In fact, there is a spiritual reason, too! Even if you’re not afraid of planes, it’s a high-stress situation. Taking a flight often involves saying goodbye to someone in the place you’re leaving. You can also be worried about a plane crash or losing your baggage.
You can drink plenty of water before your flight to fight back your tears. You can also keep your mind busy with a puzzle or brain game. And if you’re going to watch a movie, maybe choose one that’s a bit more relaxing. In short, make flying a more pleasant and less stressful experience.
28. In Paragraph 1 the author started with questions in order to________.
A. lead to the topic of the text B. give background information
C. ask why some people feel bad on the plane D. show the do’s and don’ts on the plane
29. What triggers tears when you’re on an airplane?
A. The weather. B The altitude. C. Your health. D. The temperature.
30. What does the underlined word “dehydration” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Catching a disease. B. Drinking too much water.
C. Losing too much water from one’s body. D. Sleeping too much m the daytime.
31. In the last paragraph the author mainly tells us ________.
A. suggestions on how to take a safe flight B. tips on how to hold back tears while flying
C. advice on how to get over fears when flying D. ways of making yourself comfortable while flying
D
Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets. These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, plain instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they fill you up well and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Crucially, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal!
So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes. But when cooked with less seasoning plus veggies and protein, they become a good occasional meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a different diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less frightening than people think — just upgrade your cooking method!
32. What determines if instant noodles are unhealthy?
A. Their quick cooking time. B. The time of eating.
C. The junk food label. D. The preparation method.
33. What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles?
A. The flavor packets. B. The dried noodles. C. Using boiling water. D. People avoiding cooking.
34. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph?
A. Warn about health dangers. B. Argue noodles are harmless.
C. Give cooking directions. D. List harmful additives.
35. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Instant Noodles: How to Cook? B. Instant Noodles: Not All Waste.
C. Instant Noodles: Eat Sometimes. D. Instant Noodles: What we know?

Living in a shared apartment for the first time? Here are some tips to help you settle in smoothly.
Don’t just shout. Talk it out.
Whether you’re sharing with old friends or someone new, living together can bring unexpected challenges. 36 Don’t let small misunderstandings grow into bigger issues. If talking face-to-face doesn’t solve things, consider asking a third person to help.
Make your room represent (代表) you.

Living with people from different backgrounds can be a wonderful experience.
