B More than 20 years ago, if someone had told Chao Ziyi and Chao Ziwei — two brothers now somewhere between forty and fifty from Henan, who earned their living by making large bowls — that one day they would become artists, they would have laughed it off. C Imagine if an airliner only lasted a single journey and a new one had to be built for every single flight. It may sound crazy, but in the world of spaceflight, this “single-use” approach is a well-established practice. The first rockets to launch humans into orbit back in the 1960s were changed military missiles, so it’s no surprise they were designed for just one flight each. For space operators like NASA, however, the result was painfully expensive. Adjusted to modern prices, the cost of putting a payload (负载) into orbit using one of those early rockets was around $ 30,000 (￥ 201,222) per kilogram. The obvious solution was to make space launchers reusable, and NASA came up with just such an approach that it believed would greatly reduce launch costs. This was the Space Shuttle, which first flew in 1981. Unfortunately, the Space Shuttle pushed costs in the wrong direction. Despite its reusable design, it still managed to use $ 65,000 (￥ 435,992) for every kilogram it delivered to orbit. The problem was that in order to achieve reusability with 20th-century technology, the Space Shuttle had to be very complicated. To bring it back in one piece to the earth, it had to be flown down through the atmosphere by human pilots. The need for pilots, heat shielding (屏蔽) and complex control systems was what made costs high. Then came Space X. In 2015, the company showed it was possible to safely land the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket back on a platform in the ocean. Later landings took place on land. This was a game-changer. It meant that the expensive part of the rocket could be reused dozens of times. The cost of launching payloads fell to around $ 2,700 (￥ 18,110) per kilogram. Space X’s approach is still not perfect. The second stage of Falcon 9 is still thrown away after each launch. And reusing rocket stages requires heavy inspection and repairs after every flight. A new study led by Dr Roza Kamiloglu, provides evidence that there are just two main types of laughter: one generated when people find something funny and one that can be caused only through the physical act of tickling (挠痒痒). Dr Kamiloglu instructed assistants to collect 887 videos that were then classified, ranging from tickle attacks to laughing for other factors. About 70% of these videos were used to train a machine-learning algorithm (算法) to classify laughter by reasons. The algorithm was then asked to classify the remaining 30% and correctly identified laughter produced by tickling 62.5% of the time. All other forms of laughter, whether they came from viewing stand-up comedy or practical jokes, were difficult to tell apart. This suggested there was something unique about the tickling laughter. When Dr Kamiloglu ran the experiment again, asking human observers to classify the laughter, a similar result showed: Human observers correctly identified tickling laughter 61.2% of the time. The findings made scientists reflect on the roots of laughter. After all, humans are not the only animals that can laugh and tickle. This points to the fact that laughter from tickling developed over 10 million years ago. This early sort of laughter probably developed to help primates (灵长目动物) build friendly relations. My mom started a travel agency when she was younger than I am now, and my parents never left me behind when they went on their adventures. I graduated early and got a degree from college by the time I turned 18. And at that time, I had travelled to around 70 countries. This was the point in my life where people began to ask me the scariest question: “What are you going to do next?” To answer that question, I began asking myself what I was most interested in, which has always been travelling, and how to make the most out of the cards that I was dealt, which was how much travel experience I’d had at my age.
