Fifteen-year-old Sansa has been writing for eight years and has been working on a book for the past four. Feeling stuck and unable to write, she started searching for writing groups in Los Angeles, looking for guidance. When she found WriteGirl, she was inspired.
Keren Taylor started WriteGirl in 2001 as a way to help teen girls who did not have access to creative writing programs. “Teen girls are incredibly vulnerable (脆弱的) and invisible,” Taylor said. “They really need to be lifted up and inspired.”
At WriteGirl, 400 women writers volunteer to mentor (指导) 700 teenagers a year. Every girl who has gone through the mentorship program has gone to college and several have pursued careers as professional writers. Through the program, girls dive into poetry, fiction, songwriting, play and so on, learning techniques from professional women writers. This leads to well-rounded training and sets WriteGirl apart from other organizations.
A typical exercise at WriteGirl is mic and rant, a 30-second session before writing for each girl. As a vehicle for teens to get their ideas out, it empowers girls to explore anything meaningful to them. “Not the flowery language, or rather, complicated expressions that sound skillful, but more of the natural, this is what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling.” Taylor said.
Sansa’s mentor Danyella Wilder is attracted by the long-term nature of mentoring at WriteGirl. Wilder wishes she had a program like this herself when she was 15. “To just have an organization where people are spending their time just to tell you, ‘Hey, good job,’ or ‘That was amazing.’ You’re at the age where you need to hear that.”
4. Why did Sansa join WriteGirl?
A. To gain a sense of belonging. B. To overcome her writing block.
C. To release negative emotions. D. To become a professional writer.
5. What makes WriteGirl different from other organizations?
A. It aims to produce professional writers.
B. It turns teen girls into mentors.
C. It exposes girls to varied writing styles.
D. It ensures girls’ entry to college.
6. What does the “mic and rant” exercise in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A daily writing task. B. A recitation of poetry.
C. A session for idea generation. D. A skillful expression activity.
7. What does Danyella Wilder imply in the last paragraph?
A. Mentoring is a time-consuming process.
B. Positive feedback is crucial for teen girls.
C. Criticism at a young age can be harmful.
D. Mentorship should be based on friendship.

In the bustling tourist city of Strasbourg, France, street performers from various countries can be found. Among them is Zhao Yang, a 24-year-old Chinese student studying film at the University of Strasbourg, who plays the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute.
Zhao’s fascination with the pipa began at the age of four when she was attracted by its elegance and the skills of the player. This charm fueled her musical journey.
Later, Zhao decided to showcase her pipa skills on the streets of Strasbourg for a video project. This performance attracted a growing audience. She shared the video on social media, quickly drawing the attention of viewers worldwide. Since then, Zhao has been regularly playing the pipa on the streets of France in her free time and has built an online following of almost 300,000 fans through her vlogs.
During her street performances, Zhao has established meaningful connections and cultural exchanges with locals and tourists from around the world. Once, an elderly man who was visually challenged approached her and felt her pipa. Zhao vividly remembers the man’s words: “This is it! I visited China in the 1970s and 1980s. When I heard it on the street today, I knew it was a sound from China.”
In one of her videos, she introduced classic pieces from China’s Kunqu Opera, such as the story of Du Shiniang, a legendary courtesan of the Ming Dynasty (1368 — 1644), while performing the pipa in traditional Kunqu costume and makeup. One of the viewers said she was inspired by the female characters in these tales who bravely broke free from traditional social limits, which challenged her prejudice of ancient China. She also shared how this influence translated into her own life experiences, motivating her to boldly try new things and explore the world.
Apart from showcasing traditional Chinese classical pipa music, Zhao also expanded the playing styles of the pipa. For example, Zhao performed La Gloire à Mes Genoux (The Glory to My Knees) from the French rock opera, The Red and the Black, based on the 1830 novel by Stendhal (1783 — 1842). It was her first try to explore blending pipa playing techniques with modern music styles.
8. What do we know about Zhao?
A. She is studying the pipa in France.
B. She plays the pipa on the streets of France every day.
C. She started to learn pipa due to its charm.
D. She plays the pipa on the streets for fame.
9. Which of the following influences is not made by Zhao?
A. Building meaningful connections and cultural exchanges with people.
B. Curing a man who was visually challenged.
C. Changing people’s misunderstanding of ancient China.
D. Encouraging others to boldly try new things and explore the world.
10. Which of the following words can best describe Zhao?
A. Hardworking and talkative. B. Brave and creative.
C. Calm and easy-going. D. Talented and honest.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?

Now, new research suggests frequent exercise might help you live well in another meaningful way—that is, in terms of income. Researchers investigated whether individuals who stayed active would earn more money as a result of their active lifestyle. It revealed that staying active not only resulted in higher present earnings, but also predicted increased future income throughout one’s life.
The researchers set out to explore three key correlations (相互关系):How mobility-the ability to move, affected income, how mobility influenced income overtime, and whether exercise could help people maintain their mobility as they aged. The team analyzed data from Health and Retirement Study(HRS), the largest study tracking changes overtime in Americans aged 50 and above. This study takes into account various life aspects, including work, social status, health, psychology and family matters, as individuals age.
To evaluate the impact of current mobility on income, the researchers examined data from over 19, 000 respondents (调查对象) to determine how well they could perform simple tasks, such as climbing stairs, or moving around a room. Each person received a score, with 5 indicating full mobility and 0 indicating difficulties with these tasks. The researchers found that for each decrease in the mobility category, individuals lost out on an average of $3, 000 in annual income compared to their peers. Those who were active were also significantly more likely to remain working for longer than the other group. It appeared that engaging in exercise enabled individuals to maintain mobility and engage in professional life for a longer period of time than those who were less active.
Looking at earnings overtime revealed even more substantial benefits for those who remained active throughout their lives. Active individuals showed an overall income level that was $6, 500 higher, along with higher rates of employment. For the third part of the study, it’s not surprising that those who engaged in exercise continued to maintain their mobility after the age of 55 and had higher employment rates. Even exercising just one day a week showed improvements in mobility outcomes.
While this study doesn’t definitively prove that leading a healthy lifestyle directly leads to higher earnings, it strongly suggests that staying healthy and mobile brings benefits beyond just lower levels of disease.
12. What didn’t researchers take into consideration when designing their experiment?
A. Family matters B. Work and social status
C. Health and psychology D. Educational background
13. According to paragraph 3, what’s the impact of current mobility on income?
A. Increased mobility slightly reduces annual income
B. Greater mobility is closely related to higher income
C. Decreased mobility greatly increases the overall income
D. Maintaining mobility has nothing to do with the income
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards leading a healthy lifestyle?
A. Favorable B. Indifferent C. Opposed D. Doubtful
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Exercise Lowers Levels of All Diseases
B. Exercise Promotes Work Efficiency
C. Exercise Helps to Make More Money
D. Exercise Ensures A Longer Lifespan

In a small town called Meadowville, there was a beloved playground that had brought joy to generations of children. 11-year-old Emma and her best friends, Alice and Leo, were among those who idled away their after-school time and weekends there all year round. It was a place where imaginations soared, friendships blossomed, and laughter echoed through the air.
One afternoon, rushing out the school gate, Emma shouted, “Let’s go down to the playground!” The three of them got there soon, but it was locked up. The fence was broken and the swings had tape around them.
Shocked, they stared into each other’s eyes, not knowing why. A man approached them, explaining that it was unsafe and the council had decided to shut it down.
“Will they fix it?” asked Alice.
“No. it will cost a lot, at least ten thousand dollars.” the man shook his head, walking away. Leo looked desperate, gazing at the playground and then hanging his head, as if bidding farewell. “We need to get some help!” Emma dragged Alice towards her home.
On stepping into the house, Emma exclaimed, “Dad! We need ten thousand dollars...” Her dad, who was drinking coffee, turned his head around, “What?” Alice then revealed the truth. Hearing this heart-breaking news, Emma’s parents were more than surprised, for their childhood was closely connected with that playground as well. They spread the news to other families.
Instead of providing the money, they suggested the children take matters into their own hands while parents offered assistance.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Emma sprang to her feet, “Let’s hold a bake sale to raise funds!” Everyone presents lit up, nodding in agreement. With respective tasks, the children and parents got down to the preparation. Emma’s father made a huge banner reading “Saving the Playground” while Leo’s mom occupied herself with paperwork needed to issue a permit for the sale. Meanwhile, kids worked jointly to design and hand out the leaflets. Eventually, the big day came. Almost every family in their community contributed their delicious homemade treats. That Sunday morning, the aroma of freshly baked cookies and cakes filled the air as people lined up to support the cause. Being a tremendous success, the sale in the farmer’s market went for another 2 months.
Their hard work paid off. As news of their efforts spread, local businesses started pitching in. The hardware store donated paint and materials, while the gardening center provided plants and flowers. The children worked tirelessly, transforming the worn-out playground into a vibrant and inviting space once again. On the day of re-opening, the children organized a community celebration, inviting everyone who had contributed to the project to share the joy. The children of Meadowville taught the world that with determination, unity, and a little bit of fundraising, anything is possible. The playground stood as a testament to their resilience and the power of their youthful spirits, reminding everyone that dreams can be achieved when hearts come together.
